Came here one Friday afternoon with our family of four - the interior was fun with a bunch of various college flags hanging from the ceiling. For beers, I got the pumpkin ale that came with a fun rim - I didn't love this and found there to be a slightly weird aftertaste. My husband got a vanilla bourbon stout and would give it a 4/5 - it didn't taste overly boozy and was nice and smooth. Great space for a pint inside or an all day hang outside. Closest thing you can get to a neighborhood pub in a brewery in Loudoun. Excellent dry Irish stout and kolsch, and the seasonal sours are worth getting, too. The big pretzel is the best you can get in the area. read more

Interesting beer selection. They have a decent English pale ale which is quite close. American wheat was ok but a Hefeweizen would be welcome. I'm very glad they don't just have sours and hazy iPad, that is a trend I'm ready to see the end of. They have a Scottish ale and several IIPAs and a bourbon porter. Decisions decisions. The last mile is a gravel road so that was an unexpected surprise. Don't come here in your Lamborghini. Food truck and you can bring your own food so it's nice and casual. Nice Quiet country location, covered and cool, shady patio, and lots of green space - very doggie friendly. The Kolsh, Saison, and Jefe are all very nice. I didn't try any stouts - not my thing so much. They are very gracious to allow you to bring your own munchies to eat whilst enjoying their beer. I would prefer to have a chilled or frozen glass or mug - at least during the summer season. The beers warm up quite a bit if you don't swig them pretty fast. read more

My husband and I spontaneously stopped here after a tasting at Lost Creek Winery right down the street. We typically visit wineries, but decided to check out Barnhouse Brewery for a change of pace and we're so glad we did! I bet it's packed in the summer, but on a chilly day in March we basically had the inside to ourselves. For $9 we got to try 4 beers (Milk Stout, Irish Stout, Barnhouse X, and Kolsch, which we selected from a large menu). The owner also threw in a free tasting of Monk's Delight since we had to wait a bit for the Irish Stout. The beer was really good (I'm not a beer person, but I enjoyed them all and my husband who has more beer knowledge agreed they were solid). Overall, such a fun experience. Big TVs with sports on inside, casual chill vibe, good prices (additional tastes are $2), and a beautiful patio. I could definitely see us coming back and bringing friends. read more

They have a good sized tasting room in addition to a nice patio and additional seating with shade umbrellas. They also have a nice open field surrounding the building. I love this brewery's set up. They have a great deal of outdoor space with benches and umbrellas. There is a little pebble section that is fun for little kids to pick up and play and throw the pebbles around. There is a great lawn and grass area for kids to run around. There is also a covered deck. I love their tasting flight. It is a very reasonable and low price for a flight of 4. You write down what you want and then they give you the same slip of paper so you can keep track. It is just a bit tough to get the tasting flight out the door the way that is arranged so you would need two hands. They have beers to go although their selection for to go wasn't as large as I would like. Their beers to go come in packs of 4 and they are all the tall boys. read more

As brewery's go, this one is wonderful. It's a small, family run business. It's inside a "barn" and all the inside tables are high top Barrels with glass tops and chairs. Each one has 4-5 chairs around it by default, but you can "borrow" from another table and get a few more. We had 7 around our table and were fine. They also have a large patio with picnic tables and additional seating. They DO ALLOW you to bring your own food, which was great, since I have some food restrictions. The day we were there, the food option was their HUGE Bavarian warm pretzel with a cup of warm beer cheese. They also have a table with mini hard pretzels and an assortment of different mustards to try. Everyone at the table loved the Bavarian Pretzel. We ended up taking one home for my daughter and they were really sweet about wrapping it up in foil and boxing it so the cheese would travel well back to Maryland with us. Apparently, they also have food trucks that visit some weekends, and they encourage folks to bring their own picnic to eat inside or outside. The beers were very good. One of my family members said the Pilsner was one of the best he ever had. They have a rotating menu of several beers and they are clearly listed behind the counter and several "flights" to choose from. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. I'd definitely go here again and plan to when the weather is warmer so we can picnic outside. read more

I've been to Barnhouse Brewery twice now - it's a really nice little brewery set out in the country. To date - I've experienced the flights that included: Chesapeake Cream Ale (4.6% ABV) Uber Dog German Session IPA (5.0% ABV) Breakfast Bitter (3.8% ABV) Spinks Ferry Peach Saison (5.8% ABV) Kilts Up Scottish Export 80 Shilling Ale (5.0.% ABV) Hop Dog Pale Ale (5.0% ABV) Full Moon Tripel (9.5% ABV) StormFront Black IPA (6.0% ABV) Everything was pretty good. I'm usually not a fan of Saison's - but their Peach Saison was really well executed. My favorites were the StormFront Black IPA, the Hop Dog Pale Ale, and the Full Moon Tripel. The inside of the brewery is very nicely appointed. Fresh, modern woods all around. Of course it looks like the inside of a barn, albeit a very modern, clean barn! There is also an outdoor patio. The two times I've visited - there has been a food truck in the parking lot - for the hungry! The staff is very nice and friendly! A really nice little craft brewery! read more

I'll give this place 5 stars based on not only what they are doing now, but what I expect them to do in the future. Out of the 25 Virginia breweries I've visited over the past year, this is one of the top ones to watch. 7 beers on tap when I visited, but will eventually be serving 10 at a time out of a rotating menu of 16-20 brews. As of May 2016, they are still open only 1 day/week, and a number of their beers aren't ready yet. Still, they are doing samplers of 4 beers for $7, and what I had was pretty good. Very family friendly place, with a focus on German style beers. Not food trucks yet but those will come eventually. WiFi available. One notable thing is they are literally down the road from not 1, but 2 wineries. So one spouse can come here, and the other to the winery. Sounds like a happy marriage! The most important reason I'm giving them 5 stars is they will be serving lagers in the next several months. For microbrews, that's incredibly rare. Most places don't have either the refrigeration capacity, or they can't afford the extra fermentation time; neither will be a problem for Barnhouse. What's more, they will be serving a Rauchbier and a Schwartzbier (very smoky German beers), which almost certainly makes them unique. What I tried: Full Moon Tripple: A winner! Hit the sweet spot of being just fruity enough but not overly so. Porter: Not very heavy by porter standards; pretty good Kolsch: Nice; fairly light Harvest Hefe: Tiny bit of fruit; not bad at all Scottish beer: Very notable because this is one of the VERY FEW Scottish beers I've enjoyed, ANYWHERE. Not sure if that speaks to my tastes buds, or the beer. Pale Ale: Must have high IBUs, since I wasn't a fan. Cuke Saison: Made with....cucumber. Seriously. Cucumber. I was told it's a 'love it or hate it' beer, and I came down on the side of the later. read more

Hidden gem alert! This is such a lovely brewery. We stopped by on our way from a short ski trip and you could definitely tell that this place is run by people who love what they are doing. We've gotten a flight. I tried the porter and stout and they were both delicious! There was a complimentary snacks station but we ordered a soft baked pretzel and it was amazing. They came asking how we liked it and if the amount of salt was just right. It was indeed! We will be coming back. read more

This hidden gem is located right next to the Lost Creek Winery and is a great little hideaway. They've got multiple TVs for watching the game, several high tops along with a good sized bar, and a fantastic, scenic outdoors. This is a great, smaller, family friendly brewery. The location is perfect, situated between two winerys in a beautiful location. Even though they are a smaller brewery, they have tons of options for different beers. They also offer free pretzels with a variety of fun mustards! They had a chocolate habanero flavor that was delicious. They also have a bunch of games to play while you're there, like board games and cards. I went in February so it was too cold to hangout outside, but the outdoor patio area looked cute, and they were advertising a bunch of bands for the warmer months. We hosted a group of 40 or so at Barnhouse a few weeks ago for welcome drinks the day before our wedding. Rob was really easy to work with planning everything, and made sure we had tables on the patio reserved for us (there is the option to rent the space as well, but with our size group we found we had plenty of room to share). Bringing in our own food was fine as well, but plenty of our guests went for the hot dogs and (delicious and huge) pretzels Barnhouse offers. On a Saturday in the fall there happened to be a live band set up as well, who were great without drowning out the rest of the crowd. Best of all was the beers -- a very good set of more standard brews (think ales, stouts, and lagers, with one or two IPAs thrown in there too) that were serious crowd pleasers. Good spot that we've meant to get to for a bit. It's very close to Vanish and I think if I was in that area again we'd do Vanish instead. Beer was pretty good- broad selection- and were pretty good, not outstanding. We did get a growler of the Dopplebock. Lots of outside space that's covered and it's very family/dog/food friendly. There are some tables inside in the AC- but it was awkwardly quiet inside. 3.5 stars is probably a little more fair, but is a good spot off the road a bit that's worth trying. read more

Friendly staff (charming to be called by name), plenty of parking and patio space, BBQ stand posted outside. Sadly no Chesapeake Cream Ale in rotation at the time of our visit. Lots of locals bring their kids here. The Full Moon Tripel was my favorite, hands down... followed distantly by the Kilts Up Scottish Export 80 Shilling Ale. Old Bagpipes Wee Heavy Scotch Ale was fine, and the Wildfire Rauchbier had a good amount of smoke. I wouldn't get the Mountain Pass Pilsner, Hop Dog Pale Ale, or Kittocton Kolsch again, but the StormFront Black IPA was inoffensive, and Harvest Hefe and Cutthroat Common made for easy drinking. I'd come back in fall or winter to give them one more try, in hopes of finding their barleywine, pumpkin, or BA dark beers. read more

Went here yesterday. The beers are excellent. I typically stick to IPAS and sour beers so I was initially disappointed when I discovered this place focuses on dark beers. But after trying the beers....WOW. I may become a dark beer drinker! These guys really know what they are doing. Excellent beers. The only downside: they are too far from my house to visit frequently :(. One of the owners was there when I arrived. He was extremely nice and happy to share information about the brewery. I had my dog in tow. He got lots of love and attention and a large dog biscuit from the owner. I definitely recommend this brewery. I've been to almost 30 breweries in VA and this is one of the best. read more

I'm excited by this new brewery. I'm a fan of Scottish ales, and few breweries around here make them and when they do they tend to be way too sweet. Barnhouse's Kilt's Up Scottish Export is excellent. Balanced with the right floral notes. They also make a good lager. Something else that most breweries are not doing. Don't get me wrong, I still like have a bold imperial stout, but on a hot and humid day sometimes you just want a classic lager. Their larger is bready Canadian style, almost like a Moosehead. Also tried their porter and stout, both were good. They are growing their own hops. Rob Larrick, the co-owner told me that they hope to get up 15-20% of the hops from their own plants. He noted that certain hops (e.g., English hop varieties) do not grow here, so they will always have to purchase hops. Really looking forward to trying their forthcoming bitter ale. Extra bonus is that the Winery at Lost Creek is just down the road from the Brewery and is also worth checking out. read more

Visited for the first time this weekend and will definitely return. Between our group we tried 4-5 different beers that were all great. My favorite was the dunkel and bfs favorite was the fest beir. They offer complimentary pretzels and a variety of homemade mustards. The place itself is perfectly quaint and the outdoor seating with a covered patio offered a pretty view.
