Todays beer options

Interesting beer selection. They have a decent English pale ale which is quite close. American wheat was ok but a Hefeweizen would be welcome. I'm very glad they don't just have sours and hazy iPad, that is a trend I'm ready to see the end of. They have a Scottish ale and several IIPAs and a bourbon porter. Decisions decisions. The last mile is a gravel road so that was an unexpected surprise. Don't come here in your Lamborghini. Food truck and you can bring your own food so it's nice and casual. Live music when we were here. Oh and dog friendly.

My husband and I spontaneously stopped here after a tasting at Lost Creek Winery right down the street. We typically visit wineries, but decided to check out Barnhouse Brewery for a change of pace and we're so glad we did! I bet it's packed in the summer, but on a chilly day in March we basically had the inside to ourselves. For $9 we got to try 4 beers (Milk Stout, Irish Stout, Barnhouse X, and Kolsch, which we selected from a large menu). The owner also threw in a free tasting of Monk's Delight since we had to wait a bit for the Irish Stout. The beer was really good (I'm not a beer person, but I enjoyed them all and my husband who has more beer knowledge agreed they were solid). Overall, such a fun experience. Big TVs with sports on inside, casual chill vibe, good prices (additional tastes are $2), and a beautiful patio. I could definitely see us coming back and bringing friends.

Stopped in for a few drinks before a wedding. We absolutely loved this place. It has a small community feel to it (almost like a townie brewery). The bartender was friendly and happy to help you choose a great craft beer. We'll definitely stop back in if we're in the area.

I love this brewery's set up. They have a great deal of outdoor space with benches and umbrellas. There is a little pebble section that is fun for little kids to pick up and play and throw the pebbles around. There is a great lawn and grass area for kids to run around. There is also a covered deck. I love their tasting flight. It is a very reasonable and low price for a flight of 4. You write down what you want and then they give you the same slip of paper so you can keep track. It is just a bit tough to get the tasting flight out the door the way that is arranged so you would need two hands. They have beers to go although their selection for to go wasn't as large as I would like. Their beers to go come in packs of 4 and they are all the tall boys.

As brewery's go, this one is wonderful. It's a small, family run business. It's inside a "barn" and all the inside tables are high top Barrels with glass tops and chairs. Each one has 4-5 chairs around it by default, but you can "borrow" from another table and get a few more. We had 7 around our table and were fine. They also have a large patio with picnic tables and additional seating. They DO ALLOW you to bring your own food, which was great, since I have some food restrictions. The day we were there, the food option was their HUGE Bavarian warm pretzel with a cup of warm beer cheese. They also have a table with mini hard pretzels and an assortment of different mustards to try. Everyone at the table loved the Bavarian Pretzel. We ended up taking one home for my daughter and they were really sweet about wrapping it up in foil and boxing it so the cheese would travel well back to Maryland with us. Apparently, they also have food trucks that visit some weekends, and they encourage folks to bring their own picnic to eat inside or outside. The beers were very good. One of my family members said the Pilsner was one of the best he ever had. They have a rotating menu of several beers and they are clearly listed behind the counter and several "flights" to choose from. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. I'd definitely go here again and plan to when the weather is warmer so we can picnic outside.

I've been to Barnhouse Brewery twice now - it's a really nice little brewery set out in the country. To date - I've experienced the flights that included: Chesapeake Cream Ale (4.6% ABV) Uber Dog German Session IPA (5.0% ABV) Breakfast Bitter (3.8% ABV) Spinks Ferry Peach Saison (5.8% ABV) Kilts Up Scottish Export 80 Shilling Ale (5.0.% ABV) Hop Dog Pale Ale (5.0% ABV) Full Moon Tripel (9.5% ABV) StormFront Black IPA (6.0% ABV) Everything was pretty good. I'm usually not a fan of Saison's - but their Peach Saison was really well executed. My favorites were the StormFront Black IPA, the Hop Dog Pale Ale, and the Full Moon Tripel. The inside of the brewery is very nicely appointed. Fresh, modern woods all around. Of course it looks like the inside of a barn, albeit a very modern, clean barn! There is also an outdoor patio. The two times I've visited - there has been a food truck in the parking lot - for the hungry! The staff is very nice and friendly! A really nice little craft brewery!

I'll give this place 5 stars based on not only what they are doing now, but what I expect them to do in the future. Out of the 25 Virginia breweries I've visited over the past year, this is one of the top ones to watch. 7 beers on tap when I visited, but will eventually be serving 10 at a time out of a rotating menu of 16-20 brews. As of May 2016, they are still open only 1 day/week, and a number of their beers aren't ready yet. Still, they are doing samplers of 4 beers for $7, and what I had was pretty good. Very family friendly place, with a focus on German style beers. Not food trucks yet but those will come eventually. WiFi available. One notable thing is they are literally down the road from not 1, but 2 wineries. So one spouse can come here, and the other to the winery. Sounds like a happy marriage! The most important reason I'm giving them 5 stars is they will be serving lagers in the next several months. For microbrews, that's incredibly rare. Most places don't have either the refrigeration capacity, or they can't afford the extra fermentation time; neither will be a problem for Barnhouse. What's more, they will be serving a Rauchbier and a Schwartzbier (very smoky German beers), which almost certainly makes them unique. What I tried: Full Moon Tripple: A winner! Hit the sweet spot of being just fruity enough but not overly so. Porter: Not very heavy by porter standards; pretty good Kolsch: Nice; fairly light Harvest Hefe: Tiny bit of fruit; not bad at all Scottish beer: Very notable because this is one of the VERY FEW Scottish beers I've enjoyed, ANYWHERE. Not sure if that speaks to my tastes buds, or the beer. Pale Ale: Must have high IBUs, since I wasn't a fan. Cuke Saison: Made with....cucumber. Seriously. Cucumber. I was told it's a 'love it or hate it' beer, and I came down on the side of the later.

Scenic drive, open space, kid and pet friendly and outdoor food allowed. Nice fall outing. Check out ROOTS on your way there for a good brisket sandwich.

The Irish Stout was amazing. Great farm brewery in a lovely setting. We raised our glasses to a heard of passing deer. Will be back.

Ask the Community - Barnhouse Brewery

Can they accommodate a bigger group of say 11 or 12? Can you bring your own food? The day we want to go they only have pretzels, which I can't eat. Thanks!

Yes is the answer to both questions. If you would like to call us ahead of time to let us know as a courtesy that you are coming, that would be great but not required. Also, we have a policy of allowing you to bring your own food, especially for… Read more

We were very interested in trying this brewery. White's Ferry has been on Facebook and TikTok so…read morewe thought why not....well the only good thing about the brewery was the view. When we arrived there as a sign that read "all day happy hour M-F, 50% off all pints." When asked the guy at the bar said it was only for weekdays not weekends. Mind you we came on a Friday. The beers were sub par, nothing really tasted good. Honestly it all tasted the same. We also ordered food which I think was overpriced. $60 for three burgers and jalapeño poppers. I was also told that the flight, which was $20 for 6 5oz pours was $20.50 would be discounted by 1/2; however the bill did not reflect this. I was informed that it would come off the food but when we got the total there was not itemized list, probably because to hide how much tip was already included. When I went to pay the tab, I was informed that gratuity was already included! I'm not a fan of that at all. I should be able to decide how much to tip. Will not be going back, sorry not good. If you're trying to decide, hit up Harvest Gap Brewery instead.

The establishment is a brewery so I feel that they must be rated on their main product - beer - and it was not great. I'd give their beer 3 stars, and all the people I was there with agree it would not prompt us to come back for the beer alone. Food - they have a fairly extensive list of food items prepared in the kitchen next door. We got the white chicken pizza, brisket quesadilla and chicken rolls with a fun Indian flavor twist. The collective favorite were the quesadillas! I'd say the food was 4/5 - I wouldn't come back for the food alone but my in-laws said they would. Ambiance - the interior of the brewery didn't quite feel like a brewery? Felt a little sterile / empty - we were the only people there for over an hour around 3 on a Friday afternoon. The redeeming qualities are really nice staff members - very attentive, like raising the volume in the TV when they noticed we were watching. The views from outside are also really pretty looking out at the river, and would be a nice spot in the summer. Overall; the beer's just not there but their food and views were top notch.

Very family friendly, plenty of place to run around and the food comes out quick (no specific kids menu but the grilled cheese was a huge hit). The Director of Operations, Kat, was lovely, came by our table to chat and shared a little more about the makers market they were hosting and some of the special events (Monday bingo night!!) they have going on. The food was not only quick but also delicious -- I will be dreaming about the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls tonight. My uncle was in the mood for a burger which wasn't on the brewery menu but they did have at a food truck outside!! Limited menu that seems more like the strategy is to see how many transformations of basic pub grub one can do. Not necessarily elevations but more like combinations of limited ingredients & heated quickly. Lots of seating but not really enough if you have kids. Come early on a busy day, if so. And, keep an eye out so that you don't get bonked by a ball, running children, jump ropes, bean bags, frisbees, cricket bats. Dogs on leashes allowed outside, so watch your step. Poop station available. Not too impressed by the menu. Unimaginative, quickly assembled bar food. Small portions. High prices. The food being brought out by staff didn't look or smell enticing enough to order anything. I'm guessing people enjoyed the booze. I think food trucks visit occasionally. It's a place good for gathering, and the kids entertain themselves. Not many appealing options for drinkers of beverages not containing alcohol & the few available are expensive. Staff seemed nice, polite, generally helpful. Are there staff enforcing rules so that you don't get bonked by a ball or bat on the patio? Not so much. When it's crowded, the grounds can get awfully squishy, but once you find a good place to sit, it's nice to kick back with friends and family. Worth the drive? For some. I'd definitely not drive out for the food. But if you're in the area and want to take a break, and it's not crowded, then it's a convenient place to pull off and stretch your legs. Enjoy a beverage, if that's your thing. They have an event space for private events, so if that's your need, give 'em a jingle.
