I think there may be a common practice among some dentists who recommend unnecessary treatment. I have been to dentist offices where I was questionably told I have cavities and needed work done. I've been going to Dr. Azbari for several years, and he has never recommended any additional procedures outside of my biannual cleanings. There have been some suspicious areas that he monitored, but nothing has progressed to needing additional work done. The office is clean, appointments run on time, and the hygienists are always friendly and thorough. I always leave with my teeth feeling clean and plaque-free! read more

This star goes to the incredibly hygienist who was kind, thorough, said what would happen before it happened, and waited for responses. Thank you. Everyone else, including the Dr. was curt, abrupt, inconsiderate, and generally unhappy. My 8 yr old was with a woman who didn't tell her what was happening and apparently couldn't hear my child. She came out to get us from the waiting room a few minutes after we received our paperwork & was I dilated that I hadn't completed my child's paperwork already. She stormed off saying she wouldn't bring my child back until the paperwork was completed.... Ok. But, why the attitude? I was given two sets of paperwork --one for each person. The receptionist didn't mention anything about filling out one set before the other, so I just began with mine. ‍ By the time the dentist came in, he was pushing braces for my 8 yr old. I told him my father is a dentist & orthodontist and specifically told me to wait until 13. The dentist was visibly upset by this. What?!?! I asked about tooth whitening for me. No. I inquired about Invisalign. No. Sealants? No. I grind my teeth and need a night guard. I asked if they'd make (and charge) for impressions, so my father could make the night guard & still have a way yo remain relevant in our dental care. No. The dentist told me to fly to Ohio so my father could make the impressions. I found this off & remarkably unfriendly. Dentists in the past have happily shared x-rays (with written consent, of course), files, etc. As a young teen I routinely made impressions for patients. It's very easy to do! Overall, the office was stuffy, unhappy, and quite unhelpful. I shared this experience with friends and I've heard similar experiences echoed. It's unfortunate. I am a rare person who loves going to the dentist. Definitely can not recommend them. read more

As a hygienist, I can't say enough about this office! Not many dentists are attentive to total oral health, let alone willing to do a thorough cleaning. Dr. Azbari places high quality restorations, competently performs dental cleanings, accurately takes periodontal measurements ("numbers"), and treats his patients with kindness and compassion while providing them with dental excellence in consideration of both their treatment and financial conditions. He hires compassionate and skilled professionals, looking for exceptional service from his team, and treats his staff most kindly and respectfully. Whether your needs are simple or complex, this dentist will not "find" problems but he will not miss them either. As an honest, skilled doctor, this is definitely the guy you want to see! read more

I wasn't going to write up a review on my recent visit to Dr. Azbari, but after seeing the reviews posted by other visitors I feel inclined to share my exact same experience as others who have visited Barnes Dental. I recently moved to Portland and was shopping around for a dentist in the area, I had received a mailer about a new patient special at Barnes Dental and decided to try them out in May 2012. I attended my scheduled appointment, had x-ray's and a cleaning which went great - I can't remember the name of the girl who did my cleaning, but she was professional and courteous. Once the dental exam was conducted by Dr. Azbari, I felt that my teeth had been abnormally poked and prodded aggressively and like the other posts I was told that I needed 4 fillings for cavities in my rear molars. I found this ALARMING considering that I have never had a cavity in the past 37 years and have had perfect dental hygiene... I have not sought out a second opinion, and based on the other reviews I don't think this will be necessary as it would appear that there is a common thread of incorrect diagnosis here - I can only speculate as to the reason, but I will save my comments for my own opinion. Dr Azbari is great for every member of the family. I usually book my kids and me on the same day for convenience....the appts are staggered but goes by fast. We've gone for about 5 years and he gives good advice and is knowledgeable. My kids like going to the dentist so that says something! We've made a connection over the years and I think this dentist is better than most!! read more

Dr. Alireza J. Shamsipour-azbari is a hack. he has all the tools and has no idea how to use them, he pays for them with unnecessary procedures and exorbitant charges. he botched my root canal twice finally "fixing it "on the 3rd attempt. $1900 and 2 years later the tooth broke and was deamed unfixable by my new dentist and had to be pulled. I would rather bee stung by 100 bees than ever see this man ever again. P.S. I am allergic to bees. read more

I have been going to Barnes Dental dental since moving to Portland in 2012. I used to live in the West Hills but have moved across town. I know I have lots of other choices but I really like the care I have received here, so I continue to come make the "trek" up the hill. Amy does a fabulous job on my cleanings, I go regularly every 6 months. I have also had 2 cavities fillings "redone" by Dr. Azbari and the experience was a pleasant as it possibly can be. I'm new to Portland & tried out this dentist to get a cavity filled, and I'll never go back. Not only did he not use enough novicaine, causing a sudden jolt of intense pain when he started drilling, but worse yet he kept calling his assistant "honey" and "sweety". It was totally gross and I felt so bad for her. He represents the worst of the old-school male chauvinistic attitude, which maybe still flies in the country he's originally from, but does NOT work for me or anyone with modern progressive values. There are too many other dentists in Portland, I recommend avoiding this one. read more

One of the previous reviewers mentioned about cigarette-smoke smell on the doctor, that is true. It's not overwhelming (thankfully) but it's definitely there. Unfortunately, as a dentist, this is important because you are very close to the patient, almost the whole time. I had to go here today because I've cracked my front tooth, chewing candies (Mentos). It was part of a crown that broke. Seeing that I live just across from this place, I called and asked if they do emergency dental procedure and how soon can they see me. The receptionist said they can see me right away. Which was great. The receptionist and the dental assistant were both very nice and friendly. The waiting area is spacious, clean and comfy. As soon as I finished the paperwork, they called me in right away. Pretty much everything was fine until the doctor came in. He looked at the X-rays that the assistant took, and then looks at me. He states " you have two options, one is to cement the tooth back, which is very temporary, or you can do the right thing and replace the crown. The right thing to do is to replace the crown, do you want to do the right thing?" This is verbatim. I have never heard a dentist use the words "do the right thing". Usually, it's from teachers, counselors, priests, and people who are talking about moral obligations, not about a tooth. Obviously, replacing a crown would have been way more expensive than just cementing the old crown back. Seriously though? Anyway, I firmly said I want him to just cement it back please, and I will see my regular doctor later. After the whole procedure is done, he says, "now the ceramic crown has been cemented back to the tooth but I don't know how long it will hold. Weeks? Months? Just be very careful about biting down on anything hard." Cementing a crown back to a tooth cost me $241 out of pocket. But it's my front tooth and I wasn't going to spend the rest of the day ( or until I see my regular dentist) looking like a cast of an Asian version of Deliverance. The dentist up selling made me have doubts on his work. I'm highly concerned that his cementing skills was compromised because he had really, really wanted me to have the whole crown replaced. What if he's decided to "show" me what happens to people who doesn't "do the right thing for their tooth"? If I could give this place no stars i would.. Be careful they will quote you one price and then charge way more than the quote. Went in and was supposed to pay "around $100" to get my retainer bar fixed... Ended up paying closer to $300 with no warning... Not one of the staff members here is friendly. Please go somewhere else. Also called the office multiple times to speak with DR. AZBARI Have talked to receptionist twice and left messages for DR. AZBARI Very unprofessional.. Finally one of the receptionist told me that DR. AZBARI is not going to call me back, or honor the quote I was given... But he will give me 50% off of a new retainer, which I do not need. They also told me that I knew how much it was going to be because they told me.. FALSE. Why would I go somewhere that is triple the price of everywhere else? I went to Barnes Dental yesterday and had a great experience as has always been the case. When I started going to Barnes Dental I had not been to a dentist in several years due to some bad experiences. That all changed when I went to Barnes Dental. I have always had great experiences even when having a cavity filled. For years I had wisdom teeth that needed to be removed, but I never felt pressure to have it done. Dr Azbari was more concerned about long term issues which he laid out for me and let me make my own informed decision. Rather than do the work in house (which I am sure would have been more profitable) he referred me to someone who specializes in the extraction of wisdom teeth and it could not have gone better. I have always felt I have received great honest care from Dr. Azbari and would never hesitate to recommend him to anyone. read more

I've been going here for a bit over a year and I've had nothing but good experiences. Everyone is really courteous and professional, and Dr. Azbari and the staff do a great job of not stressing me out (I'm have a little dentist anxiety). Before I moved back to Portland I was told I needed a Root Canal and was really worrying about the cost of that procedure (I had needed to wait a couple months until I had insurance before I could even think about it). Turned out when I had walked in expecting to get a cleaning and set up the Root Canal appointment Dr. Azbari felt confident he could take care of it with a filling. It has been fine ever since and saved me a bunch of money I didn't have at the time, so I was really glad he didn't just push the more expensive option. I've been going to Dr. Azbari for several years now since I moved here from Hawaii. I've had bad experiences with dentist in the past, but I actually enjoy going to the dentist now after I had services from Dr. Azbari. I usually end up falling asleep during treatments because I'm comfortable and don't feel pain or "painful poke and prods" described in another post. I believe to "poke" around is part of a proper exam anyway. In addition, I don't feel that I'm overcharged. He actually helped me with adequate treatments during financial hardships. Some people should consider the type of insurances they have as well. I don't think the dentist chooses how much a patient pays out of their pocket. Overall, Ive always had a great experience. Very disappointed with Barnes Dental. I called yesterday to get a appointment for my son, who was home from college. We don't have dental insurance, so I asked how much a cleaning would be. The receptionist said it would be $150, but that it could be more if he needed X-rays. I said that he just needed them cleaned and she reconfirmed the price. Today he went in, had the work done, and when he went to pay, it was $195! When I called tonight to ask why there was a discrepancy, the receptionist didn't seem to care, or offer any solution, other than to say, he had never been there before. Fully knowing I was unhappy, she didn't offer a resolution, or an apology. I was hesitant to use this office, as I had read a previous complaint about the office manager. read more

He is very courteous, very concerned about making your experience pain free and he is also at the same time very conscientious about his work. I also liked all of his staff. I've had several crowns and this latest replacement was by far the best experience I've ever had. I've been a patient of Dr. Azbari's for about five years -- and he and his staff are fabulous! Very caring, attentive and professional. All diagnostics have been spot on. I haven't had a cavity for years - no false diagnosis there, am I on special periodontal care for this pernicious gum disease which he follows very carefully and I really appreciate that as we want to save my teeth. His prices are consistent with market average, and I'm especially impressed with his attention and care to overall my dental health and hygiene. I have to say my experience with Dr. Azbari has been great and his assistant is great as well, I will give them 5 stars. HOWEVER, when it comes to Tara Harral the Ofiice Manager, I have to say she is the worst person EVER !! I have been going to Dr. Azbari for a couple years now and have always paid my dental bill. Well, I ended up getting diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer, the Radiation Treatment did some damage and so I needed some dental work done. I have Dental insurance, but went over what my insurance covered, so I asked if they could bill my Medical Insurance that they would cover the rest and Tara said no, that I need to pay the bill and go after my Medical insurance myself, I thought that was weird and she wasn't nice about it either. I didn't have the $2,000 at that moment since I had just gone through Cancer treatment and lost alot of time from work, so I asked if I could set up a payment plan, Tara wasn't to happy about it but she proceeded to set one up for me. She insisted I pay way more than I could afford per month and was not happy when I told her I could only afford $150.00 a month for now, and would do my best to pay more once I had my out of pocket met through my insurnace. I had been paying $384.00 here and $400.00 there during my visit's on top of the $150.00 a month payment's. I received a Voicemail from Tara one day while at work saying I missed a $50.00 payment in May, I checked through all of my records and seen not only have I been paying $150.00 a month but me and my boyfriend have made extra payments as well. Tara called and called and called everytime while I was at work (That is why I didn't answer the call) leaving me rude Voicemails threatening to turn me into a Dept Colletor if I didn't pay said $50.00 from May. I sat down with my boyfrind (since he had an appointment the next day and has been going there for over 15 years) and showed him all of the payments that have been made and extra payments too. He said he would ask WTH was going on and why I was being harrassed and threatened while at work, he happened to mention this situation to Tara while there for his appointment that I was having a tough go after my Cancer treatment and was making all up to date payments, that is was totoally uncalled for that she treat a person in such a way. Tara had nothing to say. Not an apology or anthing, he showed her I was current with my payments and still not a word from Tara. I am going to talk to my lawyer and find out if harassing someone and threatening someone like Tara did to me is even legal. I never received any receipt's for all of the payments I have made since March of this year, I had to ask for a receipt for every payment I made, that didn't go over well with Tara either. I've never written a review on http://yelp.com but I signed up just to write this one. I feel completely taken advantage of after seeing Dr. Azbari. I'm 26 and have never had a cavity in my life. The first time I went to Dr. Azbari he told me I needed 2 fillings so I trusted him and got them done. The second time I went he told me I needed 3 more fillings - I was shocked! At that point it seemed a bit ridiculous so I went to two additional dentists (the one back home in California I've gone to forever, and then Gentle Dental here in Portland) where they told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with my teeth. At that point I had both of these dentists look at my original x-rays (prior to the 2 I got filled by Dr. Azbari) and they both told me there had been nothing wrong with those either. I feel so violated and frustrated that I trusted him, and I now have 2 fillings I never truly needed. Dr. Azbari does seem so honest, but that's definitely not the case. I would never go back to Barnes Dental nor would I recommend it to anyone. read more
