I can't help but shop at used bookstores and this one is a treasure. Used bookstores can provide a sensorial overload. I hope they never disappear. At Barnes I was able to pick up a Folio Societ leather hardbound Dickens book for $25. They don't just sell used book, however. There is a wide variety of interesting accessories and obliquely related items such as bound journals and even pens. Customer service was fine and access to the store relatively simple if you can get a spot on Main St. If you love books and eschew the "Amazonization" of this historically important niche market you should check this shop out! read more

"Two households, both alike in dignity..." Barner Books is located right across the street from Inquiring Minds, another bookseller, but let's just say that Barner is the Capulet to Inquiring Minds' Montague - that being said, I prefer this one better. Both are quite similar in terms of size, but Barner's selection is a bit more well organized and curated, and also includes a fantastic selection of gifts, like art prints, handmade journals, and even quirky enamel pins! I loved the "Bookstore Cat" one, and wanted to get it, but had already shelled out some money for a pin at Rock Candy Vintage up the street. Ah, well! Next time! Barner Books came to us on a recommendation from fellow Hudson Valley Yelper Bill Z. (be sure to read his awesome review, as well!), and I am so glad we got a chance to stop in before they closed up shop for the day. My boyfriend and I had an abbreviated visit, but it was a lovely one nonetheless, and of course, whet our appetite for future returns! We even got the chance to meet the owner, who was gracious and chatty, and let us browse past closing time. I can't recommend this store enough - it is definitely on our list from now on for must-visits in New Paltz! read more

Really an excellent used bookstore. They have a fairly extensive inventory, especially in fiction, with some real depth and diversity. Books are all generally in good or very good condition or better. Overall, the store is clean and the books are very well organized and tidily displayed on the shelves, so browsing is a real pleasure. Staff person on my last visit was very friendly and happy to respond to questions. Prices are not cheap, but reasonable, especially given the very good condition of the books. I try to stop by every time I'm in New Paltz. read more

I love places like this! It's like a big treasure hunt. You go in with no expectations and sometimes find sweet deals. Barner doesn't have quite the immense selection some of my other favorite antiquarian booksellers have. But you know what? What they do have - which is still quite good - is really well organized, and you can actually make one sensible path through the store to browse everything. I liked seeing the (small) selection of more contemporary literature in the front, as well as the hardcore classics. The selection of older typewriters was fun too. It's not like I'm going to spend that much money on an old typewriter, but it brought back memories of typing classes on non-electric models in high school. The staff is very friendly. We were greeted immediately upon entering and had a fun chat at checkout. My itinerary in New Paltz changes from visit to visit; Barner Books is always on the list. read more

Back when I still lived in New Paltz, this was one of my favorite places to spend a lazy afternoon. I could spend hours here browsing the stacks. It's not the hugest place, but they certainly manage to pack a lot in! I can always find several things I want - the hard part is restraining myself from buying too many things. You gotta love used bookstores. Especially ones with a huge selection like this hidden one in New Paltz. I like Inquiring Minds across the street for sure, but you can't beat Barner's prices! I've bought books in here in brand new condition for half their listed price. I've sold them books and even textbooks for a WAY better price than the SUNY Bookstore (please, students, do not buy/sell anything there unless absolutely necessary). I bought all my Christmas presents here, too, and no one even knew they were used! Awesome store. read more

This is a wonderful bookstore! I was thrilled today to sell some of my used books, after being turned away at the bookstore across the street. The employee that helped was knowledgable and very fair with his pricing for my used books. He was even so kind to offer me a hand truck to cart my books to the store, as I had to park a block away. I can get lost in here for hours, and never leave empty-handed. The store is about an hour and a half from home, and this store is the main reason I venture to New Paltz. The fact that they sell used books is what draws me in, there's plenty to choose from, and their selection is different every time I'm here, so its always worth making another trip back. read more

Decent selection of used books at reasonable prices. The "new arrivals" section had a nice mix of bestsellers, classics, and lesser-known, yet well received, authors. The mass-market paperbacks are pretty cheap (half the cover price, I believe) - but the selection wasn't extensive. Upstairs from Rhino Records is Barner Books, another store that has moved over the last 5 years from Main Street to Church Street. The former location was darker and dingier, but had the feel of one of those book stores you see in old movies. The store is well organized and there are definitely a lot of books, but when I got past the new arrivals the quality of the selection really dropped off. The guy behind the counter was friendly, but awkward. Definitely worth a stop in if you're in New Paltz. read more
