It's not one of those places that will be found anywhere, well maybe, but The Book Cove in Pawling, and also antiques, can't go wrong with that. This business has an old-school feel for sure, looking at the decor and taking in the original structure all around, is fun to look at. I'm sure there have been some touches here and there. Another feel for sure is, that it's nothing like B&N's and a libery, you'll see. The selections for the most part including the antiques had quite a variety and interesting ones. Anyone who's a geek in all of this, expect to be in the Cove for a long time. Service was very decent, along with one worker saying hello and how are you doing? It's rare to see that nowadays, and needs to become a big trend once again. When I'm in Pawling again, I'll be sure to make this stop again. read more

A fantastic local book store, not your average big chain store. Tara and Max who work there are always a pleasure and full of insightful ideas for what to read next or as a gift. There is a great selection on hand and they will order whatever you want. It is also a great place to bring kids......a good selection of books for them plus they make them feel welcome to sit and read or play. The book club, greeting cards and other carefully thought out products are on hand so you can treat yourself while you shop for the perfect book or build a gift basket for a gift. Another fantastic aspect of the store is the Antique Shop that shares the space. One never knows what kinds of treasures lurk on the shelves.......estate jewelry, art glass, furniture, paintings, vintage knick knacks, country furnishings and eclectic whatnots. Terrific local indie bookstore, truly a godsend! There's even a decent little newsstand, a rarity anywhere these days outside of B&N (I was going to say "big box bookstores like B&N -- but B&N is all we've got these days, and not close). Staff are personable and helpful and not at all cookie-cutter retail. I find that I'll go in looking for something (or not), and the person helping me will be so helpful that we'll find several other related things as well. Gift wrapping is free and very handy, as are gift certificates. They sometimes host author visits/book signings, which can be very enjoyable. They also share space with some antique vendors (including jewelry), and have a wall of specialty out of print books, a good selection of cards, and a nice children's area, so all in all it's just a great experience. Parking is hardly ever a problem outside of the holidays. Once there are more bathrooms in the area (old buildings, long story), and reliable coffee sources, they'll be perfect. :-D read more

My grandchildren and I love the bookstore in Pawling. It is like stepping into a time warp, the store has an old fashioned feel to it. The walls are lined with books and tabletops are filled with beautiful gift items. The best part for my grandchildren is the reading area in the back dedicated to children.They have a bench that the grand kids can sit on while you read to them and a playhouse just their size for them thumb through books in. The last time we went one of the employee's was reading to a group of children that came on a class trip. She was kind enough to invite my grand kids to listen to the story, they loved being included. Where else can you have an experience like that! read more

Beautiful bookstore in the quaint town of Pawling. Definitely worth a stop in when visiting the town. The staff was friendly and personable while also being knowledgable about all mediums of literature. In spite of section for children in the back of store, this is NOT a place to bring actual children. The other portion of the store is nice and has a well edited selection. After reading about this store in Hudson Valley Parent I was really excited to pay it a visit. The other stores mentioned in the article had been worth the trip -- especially Oblong books in Millerton. We went directly to the children's section in the back. It is extremely small and a staff member hovered over us, putting away each book and item my children touched before I had a chance to do so. I always make sure my children are respectful in stores and I do not leave them unsupervised. The behavior of the staff member (who may in fact be the owner) was extremely insulting and unnecessary. My sister in law felt compelled to purchase a book because she was concerned she had "annoyed" the staff. I had planned to purchase two books but after feeling as though I was walking on eggshells I just put them back on the shelf. I support independent bookstores. In this case, however, I am going to back to Oblong books where we were made to feel like customers rather than an inconvenience. I really wish I had something better to say because it pains me to give an independent bookstore a bad review. read more
