So the ratings for this bookstore are very high, so maybe today was a bad day. Staff was great it was labeled and organized etc but my husband and I were both very underwhelmed by the selections of both books and records. It felt like a deposit for donations of things ppl didn't want more than a hidden gem used book/record situation. My wife have been coming here for over a decade. It's a charming little hole in the wall and is the perfect place to go browsing used books and records (remember them?) if you want to while away an afternoon or just kill some time before hitting one of the local lunch or dinner spots. I've bought several books here, but mostly I've left with vinyl albums. The store has an impressive inventory of rock, R&B, country, jazz, blues, and more. There's even a turntable and headphones if you want to listen first. In addition to the vinyl, you will find a nice selection of compact discs. It's the perfect place to find something you've been looking for and just couldn't locate elsewhere. Books of all sorts are stacked throughout the store. My wife found one once that was not available on Amazon, eBay, or Powell. The owner is friendly and helpful. While you're looking around, you can enjoy the records he plays over the store speakers, often something unusual but catchy. On more than one occasion, I had to ask him what it was, and I did end up buying the album he was playing one time. If you're in or near Peekskill, check this place out. Oh my goodness, sensory overload upon entry - the smell of the books, the comfort of a creaky floor board, bookshelves going up to the ceiling, specialty items behind the counter. All it needed was a sleeping cat in the window. I've been to so many wonderful antiquarian bookstores with an ample yet cluttered it was such a treat seeing how well the books were organized, with a variety of less common books by popular authors as well. Then there's the music, CDs equally well organized by type and artist, and the same for DVDs. And then there's all the old 45RPM records. That was a blast of the past for me, and it's a pity I digitized my collection years ago. I even saw an old typewriter in the back exactly like the one on which I learned to type. This book and record store is clearly a labor of love. I need to bring other bibliophiles here or at least make them aware of it. read more

This place is an insane in the greatest possible way. It is a veritable treasure trove of knowledge, art, modern antiquities, oddball trivia, and everything you didn't know you wanted but suddenly needed to have. I loved coming here when I was in high school and college, and that hasn't changed even though I've moved away from the area and only come through for family events and holidays and the like. I've made detours here on high school graduation days and before picnics, just to see what's decking the shelves. I've found old(er) editions of beloved books, favorite paperbacks, nerdy home decor, required course readings, forgotten cassette tapes, and a myriad of postcards and pictures. Ooooooold fashioned book store/ music shop that has a very interesting collection of antique books. What I liked the most was the extensive variety and really low prices. Chances are if you're looking for a specific genre, they'll have it here. On the other side of the store, you can pick up vinyl records and other vintage items like VHS tapes and cassettes. The inside is kind of creepy with the floors feeling like the wood was going to give way under my feet but it just adds to the uniqueness. Service is polite and again, great bargains as well. The aesthetic and atmosphere of the shop reminds me of climbing up into an old attic, with creaky wooden floorboards. The bookshelves arranged to make corners, so in each nook there are hundreds of books, from floor to ceiling. There are even sliding ladders on the bookshelves, how cool is that? If the bookstore from Harry Potter was an actual place, it would be Bruised Apple Books. The man who runs the shop is extremely friendly and willing to help. He has a lot of books (especially literature selections) in the back of the shop, so don't be afraid to ask. Everything is second-hand and on the old side, but in good condition. It futher adds to the vintage, in an old attic vibe. The prices are extremely reasonable, so it would be advisable to start a search for a book here before heading to Barnes and Noble. There's something mystical about the Bruised Apple, at least in my opinion. It feels (to me) less like a bookstore, and more like an old library (albeit a small one). It's creeky and there's a book podium, and an old chair, and an old typewriter, and often, there's even an old dog. It's missing a hanging cage with an old black bird in it, and I'm missing a cloak, but if both of those things were there, this could be the library in an old castle. Looks aside, the collection of books is extensive, as is the collection of CDs, records and movies. Prices are so fair that I actually fear they won't be in business for too long, but they seem to know what they're doing...and that certainly starts with being incredibly accommodating to their customers. They even have a "public service announcement" binder which has the latest reports on the Indian Point nuclear power plant - try finding that at your chain book stores. Most recently I came in looking for a slightly hard to find jazz artist in the album section (which is quite diverse) and I found three, one of which I got for $1! There is also a record player/vinyl station that you can listen to stuff before you buy. Can't beat that!
