Really great shop, especially if you're looking for a gift. They have a nice curated mix of books, cards, stationary, candles, hand cream, fragrances, scarves, jewelry, bags, wallets, gourmet packaged food gifts and more. They do a great job of organizing and displaying items. Visit during the holidays, you'll also find really lovely ornaments and cards too. Hard to browse on busy weekends, so I prefer to come during the week. And as others have mentioned, staff can be a bit cold and aloof - but that's now de riguer in tony Rhinebeck. read more

Much ado about nothing, is the best way to summarize this store. After waiting on line for 20 minutes just to get in, I was disappointed when I finally got in both at the lack of variety and the shockingly overpriced seemingly low quality items. A tiny stuffed plastic Santa for $250, am I missing something. Fine, maybe the merchandise was a little out of my realm of understanding but the real drag was the unfriendly vibe and glares from the manager behind the counter. A very 'elitist' type of vibe which made it all the more disturbing. Won't ever be returning here, for many reasons. read more

Let's talk about customer service. I went there today and was looking at some face masks. One of the women working there made sure to point out the medium/large size. So I thought this meant these were for an adult. Bought the mask in good faith and forked over the $12. Left the store, walked down the block, tried on the mask and it was so huge, it fell off my face immediately. Went back to the store and explained the mask was way too big. I am 5'10", 135lbs, not some petite waif who has to shop in the children's section. A grown woman. And this mask was huge. It would not even stay on my face. This is a store whose customer base is women. Why in good faith would you sell masks that are so comically huge? And why would a salesperson, in good faith, specifically point out these large masks? Did the owner buy too many of these circus size tent masks and think 'lets try to get rid of these tarps and customers won't have the balls to try to return them'. Yes, I understand these are strange covid times, but I thought they would understand my predicament and be understanding. I mean, the saleswoman woman was the one who mentioned the med/large size for adults. I was hoping they would exchange my $12 mask for another one that was an appropriate size for an adult, but the answer was no. So, i hope it was worth it. read more

As a former resident of Rhinebeck, I was a frequent customer at Paper Trail for their super cute taste in home goods, stationary and jewelry. I looked forward to checking out their seasonal displays despite feeling an undeniable chill coming from the management of this store. The young girls who work here are really sweet, but I've always got the sense that the owners were sort of elitist and not interested in extending warmth to their customers. Around Christmastime I went into the store to look at their rings. Paper Trail's jewelry is on the expensive side but always pretty, so I was excited to have finally saved up to purchase a ring. I knew the girl who was helping me look at rings, so when she was letting me try them on for sizing and talking about customization options, we did giggle sometimes. However, our exchange was professional aside from a few laughs - we were not chit-chatting about anything besides the product I was viewing or obnoxiously cackling like teenagers. I am in my mid-20s and know well how to follow proper etiquette/maintain appropriate noise levels in a store. After a few minutes, one of the managers approached us and pulled the girl helping me aside. The manager asked if I was her friend (loud enough so I could hear the question) and she said "Yes" hesitantly. She then told her that the girl helping me did not have time to continue her exchange with me, that she needed help assembling a Christmas display in the store. I was really taken aback by this, as I was a paying customer who was genuinely conducting a transaction. Although there were other girls working in the store at the time, she did not ask any other sales associates to help her assemble the Christmas display. She also did not ask another sales associate to continue the transaction I had started. Side note: I later found out from my friend that she did not end up helping to set up the Christmas display, this manager just wanted her to TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE. Reluctantly, she gave us 5 more minutes to finish up. 3 minutes later and obviously annoyed, she came over to us and told us that we "needed to stop" whatever we were doing. I was appalled. Neither the woman helping me nor myself are children and we were certainly NOT acting like children. As I write this, I am still fuming from the way that I was treated and basically denied service at this establishment. The manager said she was "Sorry" (that's it!) as I was walking out the door, but being non-confrontational and at peak anger at the moment, I did not express how upset I was. I will never return to this store and have advised friends and family to do the same when they are visiting Rhinebeck. The owners of this store are rude, ageist and frigid. NOT a fan! read more

Paper Trail is a magnificent shop. They have a wonderful assortment of books, stationery, paper goods, and jewelry. They have a magical Christmas room where you can find anything you might need; ornaments, wrapping paper, Christmas Crackers, and the most beautiful Menorah I've ever seen! This is the kind of shop you see in every small artsy town upstate. They've got high end paper goods, and a mish mosh of everything else; quirky books like the Tiffany guide to manners for kids, interesting original art, and random trinkets from India. While  attempting to pay for a gift in Paper Trail I was rudely told that they don't gift wrap sale items and it seemed like it was beneath them to even consider it.This info was provided to me in a manner that left me feeling slightly ashamed to be buying a sale item.  The elitist vibe and snobbery of the staff was really disappointing.  I have lived in Rhinebeck for over 30 years and have never experienced being spoken to like this in any other local establishment, ever. read more

Sure, there are cards and invitations and stationary a plenty (and seriously there is plenty and the stuff is AWESOME). But they also have a great selection of jewelry (I want it all!), books, and knick knacks that nobody really NEEDS but everybody WANTS because they are so damn cute & clever. Great space. I could've spent hours in this store -- it has some of the best buying I've ever seen. It's the perfect gift store for that someone special, or in my case, for yourself. Candles, cheese plates, placemats, journals, ribbons, paper, and jewelry galore... I love how thoughtful and unique everything was. They had John Darien, Santa Maria Novella, Kitchen Papers, all my favorite brands and I loved the way the store was merchandised... nothing was overcrowded, everything was in just the right place. After reading some of the reveiws I was leary of going in but I love paper so in I went. First it's a beautiful store. I am looking for interesting postcards. They had a nice selection of boxed cards and very interesting cards on a rack. Everyone was very nice including the owner who helped me find the cards. I felt surveilled when I was walking through the store. I was just passing by through the area, just finished a lovely dinner at Terrapin across the street and came with my wife to do some shopping. The lady at the store kept tiptoeing behind us, straightening up behind everything we walked by yet never greeted us or asked if we needed any help. She did greet others that walked in. I don't want to speculate further but this type of service (or lack thereof) left a bad taste and impression of Rhinebeck ( of what was otherwise a nice visit). read more

The cards and stationary are unique, and the candles have delicious scents! I keep wanting to love this store. I do love their merchandise and go back time after time despite the chilly reception one gets. As others have noted, the management can be downright rude to customers. I was the only patron in the store one day with a couple items I'd picked to purchase in one had while looking at some other items. There were three older women behind a counter discussing ordering items and setting up displays. I walked close to them, they all stopped talking, and started at me without saying a word. I smiled and said hello, but still not one word from any of them. They watched me walk by and then started talking again. One of them was suddenly next to me arranging merchandise. Several minutes later another woman walked in and they greeted her warmly by name. I get the feeling if you're not known to them or fit a certain mold, then you're likely to feel welcome. On another occasion, the customer ahead of me in line made a comment to a staff member about my not-yet-walking baby having bare feet on a hot summer day. I was only a foot or so behind her and as there were no other babies in ring slings with bare feet around, there was no way to hide that they were talking about me! The staff member literally rolled her eyes and tsk-tsked in response to the woman saying something about people thinking they can get away with anything these days. I was mortified! I'm ashamed to say, I stayed in line and bought the gift I had in my hands. The woman rang me up without saying a word. read more

Montgomery Row Part 2 is something of a travesty in Rhinebeck. America's Most Perfect Little Town was doing a bang-up job of attracting tourists while still staying as Rhinebecky as ever until this place was built. Montgomery Row Part 1's brick buildings fit in perfectly and you don't even notice it was built just a few years ago. Montgomery Row Part 2, though, is ugly, a featureless two stories tall and looks like an outdoor shopping mall. There's a reason they don't have pictures of it on the website. But all is not lost, however, since some of the stores in it aren't bad. I'll take Paper Trail over Hot Stuff of Rhinebeck, specializing in hot sauce, salsa, and hot sauce and salsa-related merchandise, anyday. Paper Trail is all about greeting cards, invitation, wrapping paper, and stationery. And I'll be damned if I wouldn't mind sending half of their inventory to people. All the cards are tastefully colored and decorated, and clever without being stupid. It was kind of amazing after seeing a thousand Hallmark stores and birthday card aisles and never being able to find something decent to send to someone, to find a place where everything is this good. read more

The products seems to lost their edge over the 4 years been traveling to Rhinebeck. I find the staff rude and the whole store feels different now. I used to be able find a gift, but now it is very expensive and not worth paying over priced items that really don't move me. Too many items made in china that you could buy on line for the fraction of the cost. read more
