Lovely bookshop located in a quaint area of Kingston. The shop employees were knowledgeable and kind. Although I didn't buy any books (decision fatigue) I saw many books that deserved a spot on my bookshelf. This place is meant to be enjoyed. This store had an autographed copy of a book by one of my favourite black writers. I am 1/2 African American and love to collect literary works from writers of a similar ethnic background. I had inquired about the price and it was a few hundred dollars over my budget, so I asked the gentleman behind the counter if the owner would be willing to negotiate the cost for $100 less. Having previously researched, I was aware what autographed copies of the book went for and the one at Half Moon was significantly overpriced. Even what I was willing to negotiate was too much, but I really wanted it. The man told me no, the owners were set on the price, so I sadly left. Fast forward a few months later, I returned to Half Moon just to browse and saw that the book was no longer in the glass bookcase. I asked whether it had been sold-- shocked anyone would buy it for the listed cost-- and was told yes, that the owners had negotiated the price with a woman who really wanted it. Worse than that, they sold it for SIGNIFICANTLY less than what I had offered!!! I COULDN'T believe it. And yes, I asked how much it was sold for because I was in shock. I can accept the word"no"; I'm in my 30s and have heard it quite a few times throughout my life, believe it or not. However, why tell one customer that you're unwilling to negotiate, but then negotiate for a significantly lesser price with another?! It really made me feel as if I was profiled in some way and deemed undeserving of the item. On a recent trip to Kingston, a friend wanted to pop into Half Moon and we saw that they had another autographed copy of a different book from the writer, but I kept it moving. As much as I would LOVE to own a copy, I REFUSE to give Half Moon any money after the way I was treated. I hope one day someone opens a black-owned bookstore within the Kingston area, thus giving us access to our people's work. read more

Whenever I go up to visit the in-laws in Kingston I ALWAYS stop in at Half Moon Books. This is the kind of used bookstores that I LOVE. Shelves are very well organized-even when they get in a large load of books, they make sure they keep the place as organized as possible. Stopped by this morning and, as usual, I found something to buy (which always annoys my wife...I think I might buy something even if I DIDN'T want it just to see the look on her face). Seriously, stop by and check out Half Moon Books...great selection, fair prices, and worth rummaging through the stacks... read more

Owner is delightful friendly knowledgeable helpful with a great sense of humor. Selection of books varied. She also has old beautiful prints of animals maps flowers etc. You never know what you will find here. Books are always coming in. Love this place. read more

I've been coming here since I was a teenager and the owner still recognizes me 10 years later. I always find something to treasure at Half Moon; yesterday it was a copy of "Crazy Rich Asians" (from the "the book was better" section) and "Norwegian Wood" by Haruki Murakami (they had several titles of his). I can't wait to go back and find my next great read! read more

Best used bookstore in the area, by far. Always find something when I poke in. Just this week, vols 2 and 3 of Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle" (I'd just finished volume one) plus Maaza Mengiste's "Beneath the Lion's Gaze" -- all for $20. read more

I love this book store. This is where I get all of my books. You can bring your used books here for future credit on purchases. I love them. And there is also a thrift shop downstairs with lots of great finds. The women who owns the bookstore is very friendly and extremely helpful. The older gentleman is also very sweet and always makes me laugh. read more

I just stopped in a few hours ago. The store was clean, but since the books I perused really looked a bit old, I really didn't find much to worry about. The books were in fair condition, but that was completely beside the point when I found no books that really matched my tastes. However, it's worthwhile to stop in every once-and-awhile to see if something matches your tastes instead, because you might very well find that exact book you've been looking for over a while now. read more

One of the best independent books stores I've been to in a long time! Books are well organized and the sections are well labeled. It's also nice to be able to check out the art on the walls too! A real bonus for me is that this store doesn't have that 'bad used book store smell'!! The owner is knowledgable as is the staff. A real home run in Kingston! read more

I officially hate this place it makes me spend too much money every time I step inside (that was sarcastic by the way). But in a serious manner they half everything a book lover could ask for. Not only are the books kept neat and organized they also have and incredibly large selection of various types of books (which is more than most large book sellers offer; I'm looking at you Barnes and Noble). Once you step inside you know you're in book heaven they have literally everything from hentaigana raw japanese books to Pablo Neruda and Guillaume. And for those of those who like comic books and graphic noble they also have a thrift store with literally boxes of them for only 2 bucks. But what makes the experience even better is how friendly the workers there are, they have always helped me find things I'm looking for and when a book is not in stock they search for it at book sales and hold it on the side for me. read more
