I've visited Barnacle Bill's a couple of times and hoped, really hoped, that during this recent visit the food would be better. The fried oysters were mushy and lacked flavor. I've had friend oysters elsewhere and found them delicious, but these were bland and not worthwhile. Next was the burger, which lacked flavor. This is the same issue I had with the burger on my first visit. No flavor, no seasoning, not juicy.... How?? Next option was the mahi mahi tacos. Last visit to my friends, Larry & Deb, as they prepare to head home to Colorado. Headed down South for lunch, and after Yelping it, decided on Barnacal Bill's Grub Shop in Rumson. Great decision! The restaurant sits right alongside the Navesink River with a fantastic view of the relatively new Oceanic Bridge. Very cool interior with antique nautical decor tastefully covering the walls and hanging from the ceiling. Since I was down the shore this very casual, friendly, seaside, nautical themed classic Irish type tavern/sports bar was just right. We asked for a window seat and we were quickly accommodated and our server, Holly, could not have been more friendly and professional. We started by sharing a large serving of steamers with broth. Excellent and a very nice size portion! I had read about how good their burger was before coming so I had to give it a try. It was a very good, 10 oz., perfectly prepared medium cooked burger served with caramelized onions, mushrooms and cheddar cheese with a slightly toasted kaiser roll to keep it all together, along with chips and a dill pickle. By now, along with a couple of Amstel's I was well satisfied. Deb had the French Dip (Roast beef & Cheese) and said she loved it, as well as the cole slaw that came with it. Lots of parking, scenic as can be, great sports bar scene, good service, friendly crowd and good food and average prices. If I lived in the area it would certainly be one of my stops. Today my family and I visited Barnacle Bill's. We got there at 11:50 am (10 minutes before opening). We waited in line and were the third party to be seated. Despite being the third party to be seated, we waited one hour for our food. Other parties that arrived much after us received their food significantly before our table. When asking our waitress about our food after 50 minutes, she got very defensive and raised her voice at our table. We understood that they were very busy and were trying their hardest, but we have never been spoken to so rudely by a server. The food was good, but overall this was not a good experience. read more

The atmosphere and scenario can't be beat! Their new outdoor area is fantastic. They used to have arcade games inside. Their burgers are huge and delicious. Their wings are great too with a spicy Buffalo sauce. However, if you are from Maryland then the crab cake will disappoint. All in all great restaurant with great views! read more

I've been coming to Barnacle Bill's with my family for over 60 years. It is a terrific spot with great food and even better service. The reason for the two star review? As my wife was enjoying the spectacular view she was horrified to see a boat at the end of the Barnacle Bill's Marina flying an ENORMOUS "F**CK BIDEN" flag. This has nothing to do with politics, it has to do with manners and good taste. This place is loud, lively and fun! Staff is always incredibly nice considering how crowded this place always is. They have live music even during the week. You will never feel rushed. I'm only giving them 3 stars because of the insanely long wait times (peak times can easily be 2 hours) and the so-so food. The last time we went the steamers were slimy. Stick to burgers and beer and you can't go wrong. Order the fried zucchini too it's awesome. read more

I'd say more like 4.5 stars, but I've been going here since I was a child, and it holds many a nice memory to me, so I'll round up to 5 stars. I love Barnacle Bill's and when ever I am trying to impress a burger fan, I will bring them here. The burgers here are excellent and they will make it exactly the way you want it. When you tell them medium rare, they will bring it to you medium rare. They aren't afraid to send you a burger that will bleed a little when you bite in to it, and that's exactly what I'm looking for! Add a little Swiss cheese and you are in for a treat! They compliment the burger with a side of potato chips and it's just what your burger needs. From what I remember, the steamers were always delicious, but I haven't had them in awhile. I had the small Caesar salad and it was a nice size portion for a small price. They generously slather on the dressing so if you like just a little be sure to make that known. Their drinks are always strong (i.e. Long Island Iced Tea) and always delicious (i.e. Sangria). As many Yelpers have pointed out, you will always be in for a wait, so make sure to get their a little early and grab yourself a drink at the bar. Last time we were there it was only a 30 minute wait and I was happily surprised. I miss the peanut shells on the floor, I felt like that added to the charm of the restaurant, but their decor is pretty charming so it can hold its own. They should play some Spongebob Squarepants music to round out the theme of the restaurant. Ha. Service is quick, not always super friendly, but pleasant enough. I have been going to Barnacle Bill for longer than I care to mention . As always it's a wonderful experience with one of the burgers on the Jersey shore . The staff is always pleasant and attentive. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxing . I recommend this place to anyone who can make it . My only sore spot is the exorbitant price for the steamers . A STAPLE in the area. They've been able to do a great outdoor space since Covid. Know for their Long Island Iced Teas. We love their Fried Zucchini appetizer and the creamy horseradish sauce they serve with it. First time here and enjoyed the place. On the water, you can watch the boats passing with s beautiful view from outside and the bar area. Only reason I didn't give five stars is the wait, but I guess if you don't mind waiting in a tight bar or outside by the water it's ok. The staff at the bar, and restaurant were extremely friendly and good. Waitress gave us a rundown of what she thought was the best meals and she didn't misspeak. Three of us had the surf and turf, which was awesome, the filet you cut like a piece of butter, and the lobster tail was delicious. Another had a steak which he also enjoyed. We observed the amount of burgers being ordered which looked huge. Next time I think I'll try one of those.. definitely recommend this place!! read more

I want there to get my incapacitated brother a famous cheddar burger! As usual it was magnificent... And perfectly cooked medium rare, with their homemade beer cheddar sauce on top. This is a good spot to come in on a Friday/Sat night for bar food and drinks. It gets really crowded on the weekends so be prepared to wait, especially in the summer months. They have GREAT burgers. I most recently had a burger with their cheddar cheese sauce and it was delicious. It's a 10 oz. burger and they actually cook it medium rare just how I like it. It comes with chips, but we got an order of fries as well. I think the cheeseburger was $11. The fries are steak fries and could have been a little more well done, but that's just my preference. We had some drinks, which are a little pricey for what this place is, but with food cost being low, it evened out. $9 glass of wine and $9.50 for a Jameson. There is live music sometimes and it gets a little loud but we sat away from the band, in the back of the seating area so it wasn't bad. I've eaten here twice now and neither visit warranted the poor reviews spattered along their Yelp page. The restaurant boasts a large, high priced menu but the ambiance is casual. I'm talking waitstaff in khaki shorts and old sneakers with shipyard paraphernalia dotting the walls. I'd feel comfortable coming in whatever. The menu is variable based on catch - comes as a 1-page typed insert in the much shorter regular menu. They feature seafood of course but have chicken and burgees for the non-seafood eaters at the table. But be warned- they will overcharge you on that chicken! We paid over $20 for ok chicken with linguine in cream sauce. But the star - seafood - shines! Fresh and delicious. Most recently I had the bay scallops with asparagus and it was perfect. I've been coming here since I was a kid (my moms been going here since she was a kid too- I even remember when they used to have peanuts to eat and you could throw the shells on the floor. This was super exciting to do as a child) and there is truly no better cheese burger in the whole world. (The cheese sauce is liquid gold. So so good) I love barnacle bills so much. Not only is the food good but the whole experience is good (only downside is the wait for a table on a weekend or a nice night in the summer can be long. But always worth the wait nonetheless). Great location and outdoor space during Covid-19. Despite the location and scenery the food was bland overall. Started with the Fried Zucchini which was fried nicely but could have been seasoned. I got the fried fish sandwich which was cooked well but stuck between 2 slices of rye bread. I opted not to even eat the bread as that is terrible vehicle for fried fish sandwich which normally is on a roll. My wife had clams which all of the clams had sand. I don't know if there was some stand-in cook but I will not likely come back for the food and just order drinks. Last criticism is none of the tables had hand sanitizer which seem to be the norm across every restaurant. It made me question whether the owners care to invest in food safety and preparation. The food we got represented that lack of preparation and care. If they can up their food game I will be back as the location is awesome. Otherwise I would skip read more

Absolutely awful. Don't waste your time or your money. I don't mind waiting in a 40-60 mins wait for a good restaurant. However, I don't like having to wait ANOTHER 40 mins for my food after ordering (between appetizers and entrees). We ordered the crab dip and it was a pool of oil. We told the server, who seemed to not care. We told her to remake it, or better yet replace it with the fried oyster appetizer. She took the dip, didn't take it off our bill and added a second fried oysters to our bill. We told our waitress we wanted to close out our bill after order the entrees and gave her our credit card... which she didn't give back until we asked her 30 mins later!! When the entrees finally came, the cheese on the burger was gritty and disgusting. Like velveeta cheese Added with the fact that we were sitting right beside the toilets, who doesn't like the smell of urine every second? Cherry on top was the flat beer. Has really gone down hill. Eat there tonight and had rice pilaf as the side dish. It came out completely uncooked. Told the waiter who said he would bring another dish and once we were all done with dinner he showed up with a dish of rice and had just come out of the microwave. The food is very good. Been here twice. The first time I visited, I had the seafood dish with fish, scallops and shrimp. Small but pretty tasty. The New England clam chowder is one of the best I've ever tasted. They don't skimp on the clams either, and they were very fresh. In lieu of fries, I requested broccoli and it was accompanied by a cheese sauce that was very good, I must say. the sweet potato fries were a hit as well. Nice and thick, crinkly and crunchy. Prior to my second visit yesterday,my stomach was upset so I ordered a ginger beer. They ended up serving Gosling's ginger beer and we couldn't hold back the sticker shock when we got the bill. $6.50 for a CAN of ginger beer. Granted, this obviously isn't going to break the bank, but it was ridiculously priced considering: 1. It did not contain real ginger; it contained "natural ginger flavor." 2. Unlike most ginger beers, it did not contain pure cane sugar, but instead had high fructose corn syrup. 3. It was non-alcoholic. How in the world can a can of soda, that doesn't even contain "real" ingredients cost this much? How is this more than a Boylan or GUS soda, which actually contain real ginger and real sugar? If Gosling's is charging an arm and a leg wholesale, I'd recommend Barnacle switching to a brand that is actually reasonably priced, and contains real ingredients. read more
