Amazing experience with Barkley Square. Helping a neighbor, I suggested that we take Bam Bam, a very difficult dog to groom, to Barkley Square; Alison was his groomer. I hung around to see how well he acclimated. He was treated kindly, gently and seemed very relaxed with everything. Anji, his bather, soothed him with frothy shampoo and massages and drying done by hand, not crate. He came out looking his best!! We took our 55 pound hound mix here when his regular place wasn't able to take him on a weekend and that hound smell was getting pretty strong. We can't really easily bathe him ourselves and were looking for a bath, de-shed (he must have secret dog parties at night since no way he can shed THAT much) nail trim, etc. and a place I know he'll be treated right. This place is more expensive than some as other have noted but they do a legit job and seem to treat the dogs really well. We were happy and our dog seemed happy too so we'll be back. read more

I'm so glad that I gave The Pet Spa at Barkley Square a try! They make booking super easy with an online portal, the staff has always been so nice, you drop your pup off at your scheduled appointment time and they call you when he's ready to be picked up, and they do a great job! My handsome little dude has now been there for grooming twice, and I will definitely be continuing to take him. No more feeling like he's being traumatized, and I love that I can always add on some additional "s-paw" services if I feel like he needs a little extra pampering. read more

I wasn't able to have my pet serviced here because I booked a puppy bath with the mobile service, and they never arrived. When I called to find out where they were, I was told that this service wasn't allowed via mobile, yet their system has the option available to book it. When I advised them of this, I was told it was wrong, and they couldn't change that on their site? Then when I explained that my pet is afraid of car rides, and that is why I wanted the mobile service, they said they would discuss and call back and never did. Three hours later, when I called back, they asked me to hold again, and then said they would do it, but they would charge more because they don't normally perform this service. $90 for a puppy bath seems excessive. It was my mistake really for calling back. If a business doesn't care that they provide misinformation, and doesn't even care to call you back, you shouldn't seek out their services. I am only giving the extra (2) stars because they at least offer mobile services, in theory, which are important to owners of trepid pups. But I've found another service to come bathe my pet. read more

They are amazing! When I first moved to the area I called several dog groomers trying to find the right one for my rescue dog Lady (very timid and easily scared). The fact that they don't cage dogs before or after grooming is a huge plus for me. An added bonus is that they don't cage dry, and if they need to use a blow dryer they have the cutest dog ear covers! Lady is not scared of being groomed by them and is always happy with them, Lady is so comfortable that she now accepts treats from the groomers!(She does not even accept treats from my parents!) Princeton is a new addition to our family and he unfortunately has some patches on his skin that no longer grows hair. They did such an amazing job in grooming him, you can't even tell he has those patches. He looks like a lovely teddy bear now and rocking the bandana they put on him. Needles to say I love them! I just moved farther away but I continue making the drive. Can't find anyone else like them! read more

I have two dogs Eskimo and Samoyed . The first time I took them to this place they done such a great job .. but than after the first technician was gone and the second time my dogs were not well clean as it should be . But I thought maybe I shouldn't say anting and give another chance third time when I took my two dogs they only took 1 hr and half to wash and deep cleaning my Eskimo and Samoyed whoever has this kind dogs they know how long it'll take to do even one at least 2 hours each of them . They called me after 1 hour and said your dogs are ready to pick up . On that day I was 20 minutes late for their appointments but they could of say sorry we only can do one of your dog . But they took both . And when I got home I was wondering if they even wash my dogs especially My American Eskimo. Her nails were not cut and and not washed nor even touched her ! I usually don't write bad reviews ever but this place because of their dishonestly I'll give 1 star and because they charged me in full plus tip I almost paid $450.00 and now I have after 2 weeks I have to take them to other groomer to ACTUALLY GET WASHED THIS TIME ! I found Barkley Square through a Pet Photos with Santa event (which melted my heart!) and after seeing how kind the staff is and how well they work with dogs, I reached out to them when I lost my dog's quick and didn't want to hurt her when clipping her nails. I called mostly asking if it was possible to "fix" this, and I was blown away when I was told it was possible and they could see us the same day. Their recommendation would be to clip what was possible, then go behind and use a dremel on her nails. I was nervous and my dog was nervous because it was her first experience going to a pet salon, but the staff allowed me to go back with her to keep her calm while they groomed her. I was so happy with their service, I brought my other dog (a 100lb lab mix) the next day! They are located in Falls Church, and while there is parking surrounding the building, it is sometimes easier to park in front of Cherry Hill Park and walk across the street. It's completely apparent that the staff cares about the pets that come in and what they do. I plan to continue taking my dogs to The Pet Spa at Barkley Square, next time for more than just nail clipping! read more

My little cinnamon roll had an anal gland "procedure" (his first!) and the Filthy Beast spa package. His breath is minty, his coat is shiny, and he smells like a fresh towel. Listen up Pet Parents: if you care about your furbaby, you won't get them groomed here! Worst grooming experience ever! I scheduled for Wednesday at 12:30pm. This was my third time getting my dog groomed by them and it was a huge MISTAKE! They kept pestering me about coming in earlier the day before and called the morning of the actual groom, so I finally gave in and was like "okay, you can come". When the girl arrives, there is no greeting such as hi or hello nor does she ask how I am doing for the sake of being polite. She does not even acknowledge my dog or give him a pet. I ask her politely to pull up in my driveway since that is what they always do and this girl immediately starts talking to me in an inferior/condescending and RACIST manner (as if I can't understand English, I was born here and grew up in Falls Church City, but unfortunately people like you just see my brown skin and my jet black hair) explaining why she can't pull up because of the incline. Again, I tell her that they have done so numerous times in the past before and never had a problem, but if she feels uncomfortable to just park on the street. She says "no, I can if you move that car" (I've always had the car parked in the driveway before, never been a problem.) I move the car. She then continues to give me an attitude as if she is doing a favor by grooming my dog asking me over and over what type of hairstyle. It's really not as difficult as these people make it! All I asked for is the same length on his head and body, go as short as possible just don't shave him. I fail to understand why she couldn't comprehend such simple instructions. On top of that get ready for this ya'll, she takes my dog from me grabs him by the shoulders, and practically slams him on the counter. Who grabs a small dog by the shoulders? In what world is that okay? Ask any vet, you are NEVER supposed to do that. My dog has IVDD and tracheal collapse. They know this! It is written in his file. He needs to be picked up super carefully, regardless of this ALL DOGS SHOULD BE PICKED UP CAREFULLY! I literally reminded the receptionist of my dog's conditions when he was on the phone with me prior to the appointment and how my dog needs to be groomed. Lastly, the previous time they told me they had the instructions from last time's groom and in those, I clearly state to NOT express my dog's anal glands. I even send a text midway reminding them. They end up expressing his anal glands and I have to take him to the vet 5 times, to fix a problem that they caused. They also did not cut his hair as short as I wanted them to and did a horrible job around the eyes. There was also a cut or two on his body. I never said anything to them about all this and I let it go, but today was the last straw! Barkley Square only cares about your money. They are not genuine at all and it shows. There are WAY better groomers out there! I will not spend $240 (I always give a generous tip) on someone to be racist to me, grab my dog by the shoulders, and slam him on a counter. It is also super annoying how every single time they magically have a new groomer. Sounds kinda fishy to me. I feel like they keep hiring immature inexperienced high schoolers/college grads to save some bucks. There is usually one guy who drives the van, but today one person was doing everything. Trust me on this, just take your business somewhere else! read more

Then I starting taking my dog to a groomer that was much closer (blocks instead of miles) and less expensive (about 2/3 the cost). I noticed that the grooming wasn't as thorough and figured it was a fair trade off for convenience and savings. It wasn't until my Vet noticed that several of the promised services weren't being performed that I decided to start going back. Ultimately, my dog is healthier and I'm happier. read more

I've taken my dog here for several years and he loves it and I love what they do. Jack (my dog) practically drags me to their door once he realizes we're within a block. He's a Samoyed, so he has hair beyond belief and an undercoat in the winter that lets him go out in -10 degrees happily. Whether it's a bath or a brushout, he always comes out looking beautiful. And the blowout in the spring of his winter coat basically turns the entire back room white. He's now 6.5, but he's still a puppy in his head, so everything -- including baths, brushing, nails, etc. -- is playtime for him. That makes him fun to be with but a challenge to bathe. That's why I stopped after two years. Barkley does a great job and he absolutely loves being there. Kristina, Melissa, Brian and everyone there are also incredibly warm and welcoming even when they've got multiple dogs in the back and front and basic mayhem. I've recommended Barkley to others and they've all loved it, too. Oh, yeah, their prices are also very reasonable. I'd pay at least twice as much for a bath anywhere else because of the breed and the time involved. read more

I usually take my dog to Barkley Square for grooming and they used to do a great job, but it looks like things are different now that some of the groomers are gone. I just took him there for a nail trim and paid extra for them to trim my dog's paw pads, but they only trimmed 3/4 paws. One paw still looks like the grinch's paw. Tried to call them about it but I've been having trouble getting a call to go through so I gave up on that. Making the appointment was a hassle as well. I originally called them on a Saturday to see if they had walk-in availability for just a nail trim + dremel and was told that they did not on that day, which is understandable. I asked when was the earliest possible appointment to get my dog's nails (and nails only) done and was told there was no availability until the following Thursday. I wanted my dog's nails done as soon as possible since I just got new floors so I went online to check and lo and behold there was a TON of availability Monday-Wednesday - not sure why I was told to wait until Thursday when I wanted an appointment asap for something that takes maybe 15 minutes max. I ended up cancelling the original Thursday appointment for one on Monday afternoon. read more

Our family has our first puppy, seven-month-old German Shepherd, Bella. We had to find a new groomer, and we were a little nervous about finding a good fit. My daughter, Sara, did extensive research to find just the right place. (Sara is only 11, but takes her Auntie duties to Bella quite seriously!) When I called to make the appointment, I spoke to Amber, the groomer. Amber was very sweet and patiently explained the process and what to expect for Bella's first time. Just from our first conversation over the phone, I had a good and peaceful feeling about this place. We felt great about dropping Bella off for her grooming, and we were over the moon with the results. Bella looked like a million bucks! And she was so relaxed and happy and really hit it off off with Amber. We could tell a special bond had been formed. Another staff member, Christine, greeted us with Amber at pickup and explained how Bella did and also gave us a goodie bag with a portable water bowl, a toy, treat, toothbrush -- it was like a stocking at Christmas! We've been going to Barkley Square for about three years now and have always had great experiences! When we first got our pup we tried out a chain store but didn't like how long it took for his groom, the fact that he had to be crated, and his cuts were never the best (sometimes patchy and most of the time he came out looking like a bobble head). Barkley was close to our apartment and after going to one of their Yappy Hour's at Mad Fox we fell in love with their staff and their process - no crating, quicker groom times, an all-inclusive price, and a custom style (finally no more bobble head!). Our pup also loved their homemade treats which was a bonus. He's come out looking like a stud (with a fantastic cut and a cute bowtie or bandana) at every appointment since and we couldn't be more grateful. He usually gets the Spa Red Carpet service and oftentimes we throw in ear plucking or dremel as well. He's not the easiest to groom (I give him touch-ups at home between his appointments so I know he's a handful) and he hates having his legs brushed, cut, or shaved so I'm always amazed at not only how great his legs and paws look but what a great mood he's in after a grooming! We recently took our little girl, Hazel, to see Tiffany at Barkley Square for a summer haircut. Tiffany did an amazing job and the cut will hopefully last Hazel most of the summer. Tiffany was very detailed in her description of the work she did on Hazel, and gave us pointers on care. The only reason I am giving the salon a 4 instead of the 5 is our care has not always been consistent and the prices were often eye-popping. We will go back to Barkley Square because of Tiffany and the new prices that are all inclusive. read more

I am not usually the type of person to post bad reviews on the internet. (In fact, this is my first one ever on Yelp.) However, I had a really bad experience at Barkley Square in September and several fellow dog owners encouraged me to share my review here as a caution to others. I took my Maltipoo puppy to Barkley Square for his first grooming based on the positive reviews that I read on Yelp. Our puppy was six months old and just 5 pounds, so he's a little guy. During the grooming, Barkley Square accidentally cut him on his back leg while they were removing a mat. When I picked him up, his leg was bandaged from the foot all the way up to his butt, and he was whimpering and refusing to put any weight on his foot. The groomer said that he should be fine in a few hours and I could remove the bandage then. I put my puppy down for a nap when we got home, but he continued to whimper and drool. Within about 2 hours, his paw was swollen to about 3 times the normal size and was turning purple. We rushed him to Ballston Animal Hospital, where they removed the bandage, attempted to clean out the wound, and then promptly put him on pain killers and an antibiotic. The vet was so upset that she came out personally (despite their COVID procedure) to ask me where he had been groomed. She said that the wound was deep enough that Barkley should have directed me to bring him to the vet immediately. She also said that it was not cleaned out or bandaged correctly, and that if I had let it go another few hours that they might have had to amputate his leg. The initial vet bill was $247, and it required two additional follow-up visits. I sent an email to the Barkley Square owner, Kristina, to let her know what had happened. Kristina called me back the next day and apologized. She asked if she could call back in a few days to check on our puppy and that she was going to refund the cost of the groom and pay the vet bill. I emailed her a copy of the vet bill, but I never heard from her again. I have since followed up 3 times by email but have not gotten any response. She never did refund the cost of the groom or pay the vet bill. She just disappeared. I don't fault Barkley for the accident, because he's a high-energy puppy and it was his first groom. I know this stuff can happen. However, the Barkley staff didn't seem to be appropriately trained in first aid and they weren't up front with me about the extent of the injury when I picked him up. It was also unprofessional of the owner to just disappear after our phone conversation. And I am still stuck with the vet bills. read more

Sadly the owner is a terrible misogynist and bully to women. Not a safe environment. Nearly 10 months later still continue to spam despite request to stop contact. Staff is good, female manager was solid and service is on par, but expensive. You can do better elsewhere. I am so pleased with the excellent job that Kris with Barkley Square did to take care of my mini schnauzer Roxie during the Christmas holiday. Cutting my cat's claws is always a painful experience for everyone involved. Blood, sweat, and tears. Usually when she's at the vet we get them to do it; she's on her best behavior ( read: paralyzed with fear) and they get it done super fast. It's nothing like the oven mitt, cat in a towel burrito, 2 man team endeavor it is when we try at home. Anyhow! She didn't have a vet appointment coming up and her nails were a teensy bit out of control, so I decided to take the Pet Spa up on their billboard offer and have her nails trimmed for $10. They were able to take her right away. Their 2 employee team was efficient and clearly practiced. One took her out of her carrier and laid her down on her side while the other made quick work of her nails. The whole ordeal took 4 minutes tops, including parking and payment. We got home and Pickles in no longer snagging in the living room carpet. Lovely work. Also, when the tech was holding her down, he was telling her what a good girl she was (dubious but appreciated) and cooed at her soothingly until the traumatic ordeal was over. Was she soothed? Probably not but it melted my heart and made me like them a lot. It's a smaller place but honestly I prefer that to the huge factory setting at Petsmart. Parking is a little hard to find, and DO NOT PARK IN THE LOT ACROSS THE STREET THEY WILL TOW YOU. read more

Most of the time I groom my standard poodle in a kennel clip myself and call it a day. But about 20% of the time I get my standard poodle professionally groomed, and I have always chosen to return to The Pet Spa at Barkley Square after my first visit a year or so ago. My dog developed an aversion to having his feet groomed after another groomer was too harsh with him and traumatized him. With their help and patience, he can now have his feet groomed and nails dremeled without a complete meltdown from panicking. They are gentle and patient groomers and always do a great job with my boy. They also don't pile dogs up in crates before or after the process. He is always happy to return to be groomed or get his feet cleaned up. Very expensive (esp after the 20% tip) for my large dog but I think it is well worth it given the high quality of their services! read more

This place has changed so much over the last 6 months. Kristina is a very kind, wonderful person. Unfortunately Melissa, Brian, and Kay who were also wonderful have left and I have been less impressed. Everyone has been hit hard by the pandemic, but Kristina needs more staff and people who are more like her and care about the customer. I was recently insulted by one of the new groomers who spoke in a professional tone but who has no understanding of customer service or listening to the customer and meeting their needs. It is like when your hairdresser cuts your purple doesn't communicate, defends it and then insults you along the way. Can't trust a person like that twice so I won't go back. read more

My chi Cody has been having allergic skin issues and was growing bald patches. I have been taking him for weekly skin allergy shampoo treatments alternating those with CO2 treatments at Barkley Pet Spa. I am happy to report it is getting better! What happened??? The pet spa at barkley Square used to be the ONLY place I took my little pup. The cage free grooming, Melissa and Brian and the other groomers, and the owner, Kristina, were unmatched, and I was happy to pay a little more for the service. We had been grooming our dog at home during all of covid, and we recently went back to barkley Square. Never again. It was a terrible experience from start to finish, and I spoke to two other pup owners who echoed with their negative experiences as well. I think Melissa and Brian left, but the new staff was rude, unprofessional, and inexperienced. They shaved my dog from head to toe, as well as another customer's dog, because they claimed they were too matted. They also nicked my dog's ear, which is still scabbed and healing weeks later. I emailed my concerns to the owner but unfortunately have not received a response. We will be taking our business elsewhere and no longer recommending the pet spa to everyone we know. read more

I only take my doggie here. What I love about this place is that I can trust them. Especially in this area, a lot of businesses seem all too willing to take advantage of pet owners' love for their pups. Once I requested an expensive service from them, and they told me they thought my puppy only needed a cheaper service. I was so happy with their honesty, I now bring in Moxie and ask them to do whatever she needs and I've always been pleased with their decisions. Moxie wags her tail like crazy whenever we park outside the place. It's clear she has a great time when there.
