The situation became so dire that they had to use liquid bandages to stop the bleeding. This painful incident was compounded by the overall rushed and careless approach to the procedure. I expected a certain level of professionalism and compassion from a grooming facility, especially when it comes to the well-being of our pets. Came here twice with my fur son for grooming service and I scheduled late evening appointments with Sherri, the owner. I asked for a puppy cut both times. I would drop my pup off and when the service is done, Sherri would call me. It usually takes about and hour to 90 minutes which I like very much. Both appointments, Sherri had an employee with her and there are at least one other dog that services is about to be finished so it's great that the appointments are prompt. There's parking next to the business. It's a bit tricky of the location. They are located right next to the train tracks but behind another business store on Main Street. Ive been taking my shihtzu, Poochie, here for years and I've never had a problem! Poochie can be a lil snappy when we try to give him a trim at home, so I'm always pleasantly surprised when he looks like a brand new dog after taking him to Shari! Poochie acts like he's never had a bad experience either, which tells me he's been treated well :) Definitely come here and support small businesses instead of big corporate pet stores where they tend to have untrained people grooming your dog. DO NOT GO. NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY. I regret sending my dog here so much. They did not even try to work through some matted hair and cut all the hair we specifically asked them to keep as is. They even blamed us and my dog for their poor job. This was by far the WORST GROOMING SERVICE I have ever come across throughout my 15-year experience as a dog owner. To add, I had wonderful experience with the two groomers I previously worked with, who had no trouble with my dog when they cut his hair 7 weeks ago and 3 months ago while I was traveling with my dog overseas. I am so upset for bringing my puppy to this groomer. It was a huge mistake and I regret that it took me 3 visits to realize it. With each visit, the owner would tell me that my dog was increasingly not being cooperative and she did her best because he would be hard to groom. Like other reviews, she likes to blame the owner and is unprofessional. I took my dog about 6 weeks after the last appointment. The last and final visit, she shaved my dog. She said she had no choice. He now has uneven patches of hair growing in different areas. She left an area on the face that was matted and she charged the full cost and additional money. She told me to come another day and when I did, she still couldn't do it despite my dog taking a calming medication. She barely tried to finish the service and just said it would be dangerous. My dog has never reacted to anyone the way he has with this groomer. (He is a 9 lb maltese puppy). After I left, I immediately contacted another groomer locally who was nice enough to take a look at my dog for a consultation. The new groomer was able to finish the job and take the matted hair off. Sadly, my dog has not been the same since the last visit to the groomer. I do not recommend anyone especially those with puppies to come here. It was a traumatizing experience for my dog. read more

I try my best to keep up with the brushing and cleanliness of my dogs but Barkingham Palace's service is beyond amazing! They are wonderful at reminding us for our appointment and letting us know if there are any issues with our dogs. I have been to multiple groomers for my two Yorkshire terriers and one mini schnauzer but no one does a better job them Barkingham Palace. Barkingham Palace is a hidden gem in Metuchen! I took my terrier here for her summer shave 3 years ago and it was perfect. Since then I have been bringing my senior chihuahua here for nail clippings whenever I can. With a lot of anxiety and his old age, they are very patient, gentle and sweet to him. I can't ask for anymore. It's obviously a quick appointment for me, but Shari is always accommodating and realistic when it comes to her availability. Like any groomer or salon, I would recommend calling directly for an appointment. It's easy to find on foot but if driving, I recommend coming from Main Street and turning right into the driveway before the train station/ overpass. Look out for their sign! We've been going here for many years to have our dogs, Autumn and Bond, groomed by Shari and her team and they have always done an outstanding job with very reasonable prices. They show great care in taking care of our "kids" and they are always seeking to meet our needs. They then blamed my dog for not staying calm and for his matted hair. We had him groomed in late January and late March this year, and we constantly comb him at least once a week. How badly matted a dog's hair can be when we comb him often, so that a groomer doesn't have a choice but to completelyshave him off? Other parts of the hair are very unevenly cut. I have bringing my dog here for about a year now, and I really love this groomer. The grooming never takes more than an hour and she doesn't keep your dog all day. You can drop your pooch off, go have a coffee, and pick them back up. She doesn't take a lot of dogs at once and she won't overbook, HOWEVER, if she has a cancellation she will call you so you get your desired appointment time. I brought my bichon here today, and I showed the groomer some bichon photos and asked for keeping him a round face. To my surprise, there's no round face, the groomer cut all of the hairs from his ears!! I know he has a lot of nuts, but last time when I went to another grooming place with the same condition, they kept his ears well...It's not necessary to cut like this... Do not trust your dogs with them-- our family dog came back home with severe clipper cuts on his nether regions and on his stomach. The worst part is that they never mentioned anything to us, even when they saw the bleeding or that they had caused an injury when he was getting picked up! We found his injuries the day after he seemed to be licking the area more than usual. I'm dumbfounded by how unprofessional and cruel a business like this can be out there. Today was my first time coming to this groomer, I had a beautiful fluffy dog that came out completely naked. Absolutely horrible. The groomer was rushed and did not listen to anything I had to say about how I wanted the cut. Even after a total body shave instead of a proper groom, the shave was uneven and just so amateur. I'm glad other pet owners had a good experience here, because my guy did not. He is a poodle with hair, and yes, he was huge and overdue for a cut. He probably had some mats that made quick sheering him with clippers difficult. With that said... I have never picked him up from a groomer with so many nicks and cuts. They cut him on the ends of both ears, and right over his eye. They also missed a few long spots, but that's excusable- we always do a little extra when we get him home and go over him. In other spots, we was practically shaved. He is a thin dog, so he gets cold, and he spent weeks shaking until enough hair grew back. I did say take it short, but I would think a groomer would have the sense not to shave him. Next time, I'm giving Pedigree Pet Spa a shot. Never here, never again. read more

DON'T take your dogs for grooming here ever! They are the worst groomers in town. I brought both my dogs here for grooming on 11/30/19 and I received a call that one of my dogs had stomach issues and made a bloody stool. When my husband brought both dogs home, the other dog came home with blood on her forehead and on both ears. When I called them back to ask why they didn't mention this, they said that the blood could be from my other dog, which it wasn't. And I asked to speak to the owner of Barkingham Palace and she said that my dog's fur on her ear was matted, which it wasn't. Even if a dog's fur is matted, they should never cut or break skin! She further said that she simply forgot to mention it. When I asked if she could do anything for the multiple cuts on my dog and to get a further explanation on why they omitted to tell me or my husband on my dog's multiple cuts, she said that there was nothing she could do and simply hung up on me even though at this point my husband went back to them for further explanation and to show them where my dog was injured. Yelp should allow you to give no stars to certain businesses! So they are only getting the one star so I can post my horrible review of this place. DO NOT bring your pets to this place. My poor little guy had an appointment there on Tuesday and got the choppiest haircut. It's as if he was cut by a two year old. On top of that after spending 60 somewhat dollars on the cut a day later our boy has an ear infection in both of his ears which cost a nice 220.00. He is in so much pain he doesn't even want to walk around. When my husband called to advise her what had happened she told him she did then she didn't do anything to his ear. Take responsibility at least for the things you do especially when you are taking care of people's pets. Nice way to run a business. I for sure will NEVER recommend you to ANYONE!!! I took my Teddy Girl, a six month Bernedoodle here for her first grooming. She was a little late getting groomed due to the closure of the salons as a result of the covid outbreak. She did have some areas on her body and neck that were matted so I anticipated a short cut. The girl Nikki at the door told me it will be short. What she did not tell me was that she would be shaved head to toe. We picked her up and were in shock, so much so that I couldn't gather what to say. Shari, the owner, expressed to me via phone call that evening that her face was a giant mat and there was no way she could get it out. I was still troubled by the fact that she did not call me to let me know that she was going to completely shave here. I called back again a day later asking for a refund, I really felt I should been notified before she went ahead. At that point, she told me that we were guilty of dog abuse and she was going to report us to her husband who works on the board of the humane society. Shari said she documents everything with pictures so I said I would like to see the pictures for myself, I will come down tomorrow. I asked if she was open Tuesday and she said, "no," and if I came down there she would "call the cops." I felt I had a right to see what she is talking about. This is a quaint little shop off of Main Street in Metuchen. Its in the rear of the buildings on Main - but there are plenty of signs that led me right to it with no confusion. The people are so pleasant here, and you can tell they love dogs. Long story short - I screwed up and called the wrong place thinking I had an appointment to bring in my pups on Saturday. I had to be somewhere and didn't have time to drive them back home - so even though she was booked solid, Shari (the owner) said she would take them and promised me she would figure out a way to get them done. She had someone show up late so it all worked out for the best - but this was definitely above and beyond. The dogs look absolutely fantastic - the haircut looked very professional, and I could tell the dogs were very happy which means they were treated well. Not sure what happened to the folks who left bad reviews, but I have nothing but good things to say about Barkingham. The ladies there are terrific! Always bright and upbeat. They truly love the dogs they groom. Our guy can be difficult. He dislikes blow dryers and howls like you're killing him when you try to cut his nails. Despite all that, they still greet him like Norm walking into Cheers (that's a good thing for those of you who don't get the reference). We've taken our guy to the PetSmart groomers in town, but they don't hold a candle to Barkingham. read more
