My wife and I usually come here to get my dog groomed and haven't had any problems until recently. We booked an appointment for Saturday (on Thursday) and received a confirmation email to go with it. We got to the shop exactly at the scheduled and confirmed time. I was not greeted for a few minutes and had to try to get their attention. I asked about my appointment but the person at the front said she couldn't find the appointment in the system and that they didn't have any openings for the rest of the day so we had to reschedule. I went back to grab my wife's phone to show her the confirmation and the person at the front desk said it was weird, but there is nothing they could do. I feel like we were just brushed off and our appointment didn't mean anything. We had to wake up early and drive through the rain for this and the best they could do was schedule another appointment in a few days. Beware of Undisclosed Policies I scheduled "The Works" ($70 - includes full haircut) for my 10 lb dog. Arrived 16 minutes late and was told about a "15-minute grace period" that's nowhere in their written policies. My service was downgraded to "The Essentials" (no haircut - just bath and trimming) plus a $10 late fee was added. I checked their website policies (barkingspotsd.com/privacy-policy) - there's NO mention of: A 15-minute grace period Late arrival fees Service downgrades for being late The real problem: I was forced to pay in full AND tip BEFORE getting my dog back. Their own policy says "payment is due at the end of each service" but they made me pay without seeing the results. When I picked up my dog, I was confused there was no haircut. Staff then explained "The Essentials" doesn't include haircuts - something they didn't clearly communicate when downgrading my service. I had already tipped 20% thinking I was getting the full service. I immediately asked to refund and recharge to remove the tip since I tipped for a service that didn't include what I expected. They refused. Bottom line: They enforce policies that aren't published, make you pay before seeing your pet, don't clearly explain what's being excluded from your service, and won't make adjustments even when you raise concerns immediately at pickup. Read their service descriptions VERY carefully and ask detailed questions about what's included vs excluded. The "Essentials" name is misleading - it doesn't include essential services like haircuts. read more

I did not want to write this review but I feel it's only right.I used to take both my dogs here for grooming.I started coming here 4 years ago when I got my first dog Mochi (shihtzu/lhasa apso mix).Then when I got my second dog Stitch (French Bulldog), I started bringing him here too.I appreciated that they had a special every Friday for Frenchies and that's mostly why I kept coming back. Unfortunately however,I believe something traumatic may have happened to Stitch at this grooming place in particular because he is terrified of coming here now. Stitch is a very happy/playful dog and no matter where we go he's always excited to go to wherever we're going. When I had taken Stitch here a few times before he was fine,he would go with the groomers no problem and everything would be good. There were a few times that I had gotten a call back from the groomers notifying me that Stitch would be peeing/pooping,foaming at the mouth due to being overly anxious. I really did appreciate that they would call me when that happened and of course if they needed me to to come get him or for any reason they couldn't continue grooming him for Stitch's safety I would understand and come pick him up right away. However,on his most recent visit I noticed Stitch was terrified of coming into this place in particular. But since I had been here many times before and trusted Stitch with his groomers I didn't pay it much mind. Probably less than 5 minutes after I dropped him off the groomers called me back to notify me that Stitch was convulsing,foaming at the mouth,vomiting,peeing,and it looked like he was having a seizure.I quickly went over and picked him up. When I asked what happened they said they hadnt even started doing any grooming or bathing on him at all.He was just in the closed pen area by himself while they were getting things ready and they said he began seizing and panicking. Going into this place it is a pretty open space. The area where they groom the dogs is visible when you walk in as well as on the outside from the windows. The dogs are bathed in the back and then blow dried/groomed in the same area in the middle of the parlor. It is pretty loud in there (especially when there's several dogs) ,dogs barking,blow driers,and nail dremels going off so it's understandable that some dogs can get overwhelmed/overstimulated. But the place kinda looked chaotic. When I got Stitch and decided to just not proceed with the grooming because he was so panicked, I took him to the vet hospital right afterwards to have him checked since the groomer told me he may have had a seizure. Upon going to the vet they checked Stitch out,did bloodwork,etc. and all his tests came back normal. They decided to try and see if they could clip/dremel his nails at the clinic with his doctor. The doctor was successfully able to dremel/clip Stitch's nails. They said he did perfectly fine,he was a bit anxious but they were able to calm him with some pets and treats, as well as taking their time. So after discussing this with Stitch's doctor and his trainer,they believe something may have happened to Stitch at this groomer that traumatized or even hurt him because when he gets groomed anywhere else with anyone else he is perfectly fine and doesn't have seizures. I've taken Stitch to so many places, and various groomers and Barking Spot is the only place I've taken him to where he has MULTIPLE,SEVERE seizures. Not sure what happens here when I drop Stitch off or what mightve happened to him that he is literally terrified of coming back here but I WILL NOT be bringing him here again. Barking Spot is not safe for my dogs! read more

I tried a different mobile grooming (not by choice) and the amount they charged ($185) for the amount of work they did for her, didn't amount. I pay $60 here and she comes out smelling amazing, and so happy. She has a specific friend here, i can't remember his name. But every time we come in, she's so happy to see him. We started taking our dog Frankie to the Barking Spot this year and we have been so happy with his grooming ever since. The location is very convenient to our home and we like that it is in the same mall as our vet clinic. The staff is so nice and friendly and we love how Frankie looks after each appointment. They do a great job following our requests and Frankie comes home smelling good and looking so cute. Frankie is a Shih Tzu / Poodle mix and he's about 10 years old. Typically, Frankie is anxious and suffers from separation anxiety because he is a rescue, but thankfully we haven't had any issues. I've read some of the other reviews and I am cautious, but so far, he has been okay and is a happy pup. The groomers have always told us Frankie was a good boy and well behaved. Beware! I got my dog groomed here 3 times and each time was worst than before. The 3rd one by the manager Sammy was the worst groom at this place or ever. Sammy hurt my baby in two places; he has a deep scab inside his ear and another on his hind leg. He's been licking his leg and shaking his head since I got him. On top of hurting him, no one let me know so I could get him help, antibiotics and ointments to help him heal pain free. She shaved him down to the skin and gave him back naked and bald, in winter. Worst hair cut ever! But hair grows back. I can buy him a winter sweater to keep him warm. His physical scars may heal but he's traumatized and shakes when we get near the mall now. read more

I wanted to find a groomer closer to my home and heard about Barking Spot at the Otay Ranch Town Center. Since it had been almost four weeks since my shih tzu's last grooming, I wanted to see if I could make a last minute appointment for the very next day and lucky for me, a spot was open. I got a text message promptly confirming the appointment and reminding me to bring a copy of her vaccination records if this was her very first appointment. Unfortunately, I had to take my dog to pet urgent care shortly after I made her appointment due to an unexpected medical issue. They were very kind and understanding when I called back and were nice enough to reschedule me for yesterday. When I got to the mall, the place was super easy to find and is located right next door to Macy's and a few doors down from Taqueria Revolucion and Planet Fitness. I was lucky enough to get a parking spot up front. I told the person at the front counter about what happened at the vet and they reassured me that everything would be fine. I dropped my shih tzu off and got a text message a little over an hour later that she was ready to be picked up. When I picked her up, she looked AMAZING and SMELLED GREAT not to mention that she was in a very good mood so I know that they took care of her. They had her in a large waiting area (not in a cage) and she was very happy to see me. Thanks Barking Spot for the great job that you did on Molly the Shih Tzu.
