My girlfriend and I were out in the greater Houston area for a wedding two weekends ago. For part of our trip we wanted to try some Authentic Tex-Mex and Barcenas happened to be close by. I'm very glad we decided to give it a shot. We arrived around 2PM on a Saturday - we were promptly seated and placed our order. For food we shared an order of chips and queso, my girlfriend got a veggie quesadilla, and I got an order of Birria de Res. We also got two Cheladas for drinks. The Cheladas were very refreshing - they were a little different than the one's I am used to in the Bay Area. Normally, I'm used to beer+ lime+ salt rim but at Barcenas they have the addition of spices and Tajin (no tomato juice/ clamato) which was very enjoyable. The queso was an absolute delight - perfectly velvety and delicious. And our meals were spot on - the Birria was perfectly cooked and tender and tasted fantastic. It came along with fresh tortillas and consommé (which I would've drank if I could). My girlfriend's quesadilla was solid and she had no complaints. Service wise - we both found everyone we interacted with the be very pleasant. Our waitress was very kind and took time to answer any questions we had about items on the menu. One thing of note - the number of vegetarian entrees here is a little limited. The refried beans and pinto beans both have meat products in them (either bacon, or lard) and the selection of vegetarian items is few. But the ones they do have seem great. All in all, we found our experience at Barcenas be enjoyable - glad we were able to get a taste of some Tex Mex straight from the motherland while we were in town. 5/5 read more

Why 4 stars? Because my fajitas did the trick. --- --- --- I grew up near the original Barcenas location, and it was my best friend's favorite restaurant. Both of us moved away from the area for many years, but now we're both back, so where else did he have his 40th birthday party? Barcenas. Now, did he not clarify that it was this location instead of the original? Yeah. But if that okay? Yeah. I arrived much later than everyone else, and kudos to them for waiting for me to arrive for quite a while before ordering. The biggest downside of my late arrival is that all of the queso had been demolished before I got there, so I wasn't able to sample that. But I did order the beef fajitas and thought everything was the definition of 4-stars: good. Not bad, not amazing, just good. The steak meat was not as visually appealing as some other places, but it was fine. The grilled onions were a bit above average though. And the rice, beans and all the fixins' were pretty typical. For my friend's birthday, they brought him a giant sombrero while we sang the song. Any time a sombrero is involved, it's a good time. read more

I started this review about a month ago, but was stricken with Yelp fatigue so I left it in draft mode. The newest Barcenas on the block, the eatery can be found in the ever-so busy Victory Lakes neighborhood in League City. I live near its La Marque counterpart some five miles due south, but I wanted to give this one a whirl on Mexican Independence Day. The Taxco meal did its job. While it wasn't something that had my tastebuds doing the sombrero dance, it filled me up nicely. It helped that the chips and salsa here is really righteous. Among the items that made the Taxco, I dug the crispy taco the best. Before Barcena's, the space was home to a Malaysian place followed by a pizzeria. Quick stop here for a drink and taco while I waited for my mother to finish her doctor's appointment at UTMB. As soon as I walked in, the hostess greeted me and allowed me to choose where I would like to sit since it was still early in the day and not very busy. The waitress quickly came over, but I asked for a few minutes to set up my laptop and review the menu. When I was ready, she was there. I ordered a barbacoa taco and beer. Neither took long to arrive. The beer was cold. The food was warm with all the trimmings, but I felt for $4, it could have had more meat. It was good, but not great. This may be because I live in San Antonio and have excellent barbacoa readily available from numerous locations. In the end, if I lived in the area, due to the service, cold beer, and other food menu options, I would give them another try. read more

Came for brunch. Great looking and clean place. Cozy Mexican festive sporty ambiance. Looks small from the outside but upon entry, there's a welcoming receptionist, nicely placed sporty bar and followed by an adequately comfortably spaced dinning area. The staffs were prompt, very welcoming and friendly. Servers were very friendly and very eager to give great service. Because of the eagerness sometimes overlook details. This is not a complaint but more of wanting to help improve their sort of perfect service. They forget to give notice to what the guest is doing and tend to interrupt in guest conversation and specially even when in prayer. When asked warm water with lemon, the server provided iced & cold water with lemon. When in prayer and also in conversation, the servers just butts in without posing himself to give notice to his presence and excusing himself before interrupting. The napkin wrapped silver wares were with water stains. The food taste great and were over filling with the reasonable prices. Will surely come back and highly recommended. We went on a Sunday at 4pm so there were very few people. Yet the service was fabulous. Our host was impeccable checking on us every 10-15 minutes. Made provisions for vegetarian variety that was appreciated. When I asked for spicy sauce, he gave freshly made verde sauce that was smackingly good!!!!! The dishes were very good. The ambiance was very nouveau and did not bear the trace of a Mexican restaurant - rather it improved on the previous pizza place that it took over!!!! read more

The portions are huge!!! Service is great, everyone is so attentive! Its not too loud and they're great for parties or large groups. Their horchata is my favorite here, and usually it comes with one free refill (same for the lemonade). The barcenas queso wasn't anything special. But their chicken and steak fajitas were so delicious, perfectly coooked, and came in such large portions we had to take some Togo. Upon entering you'll notice how clean and open it is. Very friendly staff! Well priced food and drinks. Salsa has spice but not too much! We got an order of the Mel enchiladas, fish tacos(grilled tilapia but still very good) and the kids chicken quesadilla(it's PACKED with chicken and cheese) all with the charos beans. First time checking out this place and was so happy with the Skinny Marg. I've been searching for the prefect one- I've found it and as a bonus: Tajín and Chamoy on the rim. The food was great as was the ability to order a la carte. More often than not I cannot eat the whole meal so a lot goes to waste, so this made me happy. The waiter was attentive and we got to hear a little about the history of the place (and the one before). The charro beans were flavorful and just the way I like them, I also enjoyed the stuffed pepper. We will definitely be returning to try more menu items! read more

Barcenas has a very high class feel inside. The bar and dining area is beautiful and seems very updated. The service was great. We where immediately seated and our server kept the chips coming and our drinks full. The food is a bit pricey and under seasoned for my taste. I got the barbacoa which was very tender, but needed more flavor. The same for the rice and beans. The food is to pricey to not be packing flavor. New closer location and the food is still excellent. Seated on arrival in a nice booth . Plenty of tables and booths with a full bar to watch sports news at. I ordered the Barras Special Breakfast the grilled fajitas meat was tender juicy and delicious. The potatoes were spicy and good they went great with the refried beans. Original plans were to go to Jimmy Changas right next door, but there was about a 30 minute wait and we were starving; we saw Barcenas on our way in and decided to give them a try. First and foremost the hospitality is a 10/10, everyone was very welcoming/ accommodating. The entire time from arriving to departing they made sure we had everything we needed, from opening doors/to packing our leftovers. The food was hot, fresh, and plentiful; they were not stingy with anything on the plate; the cost per entree was definitely worth it. New location for Barcenas. We have been customers of Barcenas in la Marque for 5-6 years. Our favorite server, Troy, is now working at the new location and we went to check it out. The food was delicious as well as the service. We ordered 1/2 order of nachos which is 8 huge nachos. We had half chicken (4), and 1/2 beef. Margaritas are the best in Galveston county! Love it and recommend this restaurant...you can't go wrong. read more

Running errands and stopped for a late solo lunch at their Gulf Freeway location. Chips and salsa immediately brought to the table, very tasty. Ordered a cheese enchilada with chili gravy lunch plate, it came with chopped onions on top! Nice Spanish rice and very flavorful charro beans. Everything came out piping hot, nothing worse than lukewarm Mexican food!! They had a happy hour going on but I had more errands to run so passed on the alcohol this time. First time at this location but it definitely won't be my last. This restaurant seems to be tucked away in a neighborhood and we accidentally came across it. The inside is actually a lot bigger than it looks on the outside. They have a great patio area that is shaded. The salsa is fresh with a little hint of heat, not too spicy. I'm not sure if the chips are homemade but they were thin & crunchy. We ordered a regular queso which was really good. They have quite a few queso variations and I want to try them all. I ordered the Enchiladas de Pollo and my wife ordered the Enchiladas Suizas. These enchiladas are overly stuffed with shredded ranch chicken. The Spanish sauce on my plate reminded me of a tomato caldo, I loved it. The sour cream & green sauce on the Suizas has a little tang to it and was also good. The rice tastes like it's cooked in a caldo juice just like my mom does. The refried beans were also good and nicely flavored. Everything we ordered was authentically Mexican so don't expect Tex-Mex meals. read more

I order from here frequently. Usually the chicken fajitas. Always a perfect portion for one. This can typically last me at least 2 maybe 3 days. Quality is always awesome. Staff is always friendly. Food good, but breakfast is way over priced. You can go to Celaya, Waffle House and pay $8 with extras of potatoes and 2 strips if bacon. Barcenas breakfast is $10.50 with no meat. I don't think scrambled eggs and beans for $10.50 is a good deal. I always thought Barcenas as an averaged priced restaurant, but not anymore. read more

Awful experience! Went once... service was lousy but tried to be open minded because it was recently new to the area. Food was decent and server tried to make our experience better. Decided to try again today. Walked in was seated got chips and salsa but our server walked passed our table 10-12 times and NEVER stopped to offer water or take a drink order. Establishment was not busy and there was a number of servers that walked by without an acknowledgement. Our server (that was waiting on the table in front and behind us) looked right at us a number of time without saying a word. We left 15 minutes after we got there without ever being acknowledged. Amazing Mexican food restaurant. This is our third visit, the food is amazing the menu has a broad category of tasty food. I have eaten a variety of different white fajitas, nachos, seafood nachos, grilled jalapeños, quest, and chicken wing. I have been very satisfied with every bite that I have eaten. My husband and I have shared mango margaritas, we have enjoyed Bloody Mary, Lemon Drop, Apple martini etc. we have been Pleased with every drink because the bar does not spare expense when it comes to good alcohol.
