This is my go-to place to get my hair cut in Salem. Super easy to make an appointment on Schedulicity if you want someone specific to cut your hair. D is an artist, I always go to him now, but back in the day when I was new in town and didn't know anyone there, even for a walk-in and going to whoever was available, I've always left happy. I've never been disappointed by them. On the contrary, the one time I went to another place (because I didn't realize they'd re-opened as Barber's Underground after Big Derrick's was no more), I had a really bad experience. D is the one who fixed me up after another place messed my hair up and I've gone to him ever since. read more

This shop can be very unwelcoming. When going in to any establishment, common rule of customer service would be to greet the patron coming in. When going in to Big Derricks you are only greeted by everyone stopping their conversations, looking at you (not saying anything) and then going back to their conversations. I don't understand why it's so hard for someone to say at least "hey there, do you have an appointment?" Open the dialogue with your customers. Because of this awkward feeling of "my money isn't good here" I've only gotten one haircut from them. I've tried to go back two more times and have been met with only silence and lack of customer service that it made me leave. My first haircut there was pretty good. The barbers seem to have a slight chip on their shoulders and think they are the best in town but they're really not. read more

If you're looking to contract a scalp fungus, this is the place for you. The sanitation in this place is absolutely terrible. They do NOT sanitize their clippers. Because of the poor sanitation at this place, I was diagnosed with a skin fungus on my scalp. I am new to Salem and have never had a problem getting my haircut from any other barbershop. I consider myself someone who takes care of themselves. After I left this place, I saw red bumps on the back of my head, went to see a doctor and was diagnosed with a skin fungus on my scalp. I've since then been treating my scalp. It's been 5 weeks since I've left the barbershop and I'm still treating my scalp. BE AWARE if you choose to come to this barbershop, you may leave with more than just a haircut. I will be following up with a complaint to the health department as well as the better business bureau for their poor sanitation practices. In addition, I've attempted to contact Derrick on multiple occasions to get this issue resolved. And he assured me that he would get back to me. Instead, he ignored my phone calls, failed to call me back after leaving several messages with the other "independent contractors" at his shop. Living by "barely scraping by"(your words in your message, not mine) with all of your bills and shop costs is not an excuse. Frankly, none of that is MY problem, it's yours. I'd seen this shop in the Reed Opera house several times and decided to pay for a haircut for the first time in many years. I have grown a beard for the first time and figured I needed some help shaping it up. Went to the Schedulicity site that is linked in their Facebook page and made an appointment for 12:45 today. I arrived a little after 12:30 and had a seat in the waiting area. A few minutes later a guy asked me my name, I told him and added that I had an appointment for 12:45. He said okay, seemed to indicate everything was okay, and went about his business. At 1:00 I got up and left without a haircut or a beard trim. read more

The barber (I think her name was Blair) listened to what I told her I wanted and she gave me a great haircut. Although the $30 seemed high, I got a Veteran discount but more importantly I got what I asked for the first time as a new customer. The shop was in the historic Reed Opera house which added to the underground, hipster vibe. The self-described "dive bar" of the barbershop world was a funny description of the place. Be prepared for tattoos, beards and rockin' music. The whiskey chaser was a nice touch as I walked out the door. I'll happily go back but I probably wouldn't bring my young kids. read more

A WARNING FOR PARENTS considering taking their kids here! I want to preface this by saying that my son's cut was amazing and his barber, Chrissy, was wonderful and listened to my son talk about games the whole time. She engaged him in conversation and helped distract him...which was very much needed because... ...the most inappropriate possible things were being played on the TV here. Never in my life have I gone into a place of business and been greeted by a tv showing a man downing a bottle of viagra, growing a monster penis that bursts out of his pants, before he proceeds to beat the bad guy wielding it (the giant phallus) as a sword. Funny? Sure, if you are in to that? Appropriate for a business that has a 10 year old currently patronizing it? No. Perhaps my prudish nature is to blame but I spent the entire appointment trying to act as a shield to keep my child's eyes averted from the smut on the tv. This is quite the task in a room full of mirrors, and even more so with a 10-year-old that was essentially told "don't look down". In doing so, I fully activated curiosity mode 5000. To my great relief the giant penis movie ended...only for some spoofy Sparta movie with fully nude women grinding on some Leonidas-esque character, being selected to take its place. Again, for some times and places I'm sure these movies are an absolute riot...I just don't feel like this was that time and place. To my barber's credit, she acknowledged the issue and helped me keep my child from seeing the depravity unfolding on the screen (over-dramatic? Perhaps.) she, however, did not seem to be "in charge" of the movie selections. Another female barber acknowledged the near-X rated material being shown and said "What are we WATCHING?" And fast-forwarded through a particularly bad scene. However, it was only a matter of time before another came on and I was back to acting as a sight-barrier. Furthermore, in between the nude scenes there were also battle scenes with disproportionate blood explosions to keep me on my toes. So that was fun. With all of that being said. Every single person leaving here looked phenomenal! The barbers are clearly masters of their craft. I grappled with the decision to give a 3 or 4 star review for this reason. I went with 3, because, as a mom, I simply cannot return to this business. Which makes me quite sad as, barring the TV issue, it is a great shop with talented barbers. If you don't have kids, and you are in to slap-stick, raunchy comedies (or at the very least don't mind them) then you absolutely need to go here for your next cut! If you are a prudish mom like me, just be aware. read more

I've been looking for the right place for quite some time and finally found it. Scheduling online is upfront and easy; and I appreciate that. Marco is my guy but if he isn't available I would book with anyone else in the shop; they all do great work and I've never seen a bad cut come out of the place. I've been going to Big Derricks for about 2-3 months now, and it's safe to say I won't be going elsewhere while I live in Salem. 1. It's easy to book an appointment -- you can call the shop, book online, or just drop in. 2. Fair prices -- $17 for men's haircut, not too shabby. 3. Talented and efficient barbers -- I am always satisfied with the end result and time consumed. 4. Laid-back environment -- there are pool tables and a TV, everyone is really chill, most of the barbers have tattoos and piercings and are down to chat if you're interested. Nice people for sure. 5. Courtesy -- they offer you a drink while you wait. 6. Location is great -- centrally located downtown in the Reed Opera House (bottom floor). 7. Came here for the first time with my 17 year old son and absolutely loved the entire bro-tastic experience. I mean, this is the perfect place for dudes to get their hair cut without all the feminine energy of a hair salon. The barbers are skilled in their craft and they actually LISTEN to what you want and clarify before beginning their work (know the saying, measure twice/ cut once? Like that). Derrick cut my son's hair and really took his time to get it done just right in the way a persnickety teenager with a newly acquired girlfriend wanted. My son left with his hair looking the best I've seen in a very long time. Johnny cut my hair in a manner that exceeded my expectations (I came in showing a pic of what I wanted), trimmed my beard with fresh, sharp lines and provided great conversation. Couldn't be more pleased with his skill set. As for the shop, it's man's kind of place with quality, complimentary liquor such as Eagle Rare Bourbon and many local Pacific Northwest distilled spirits for you to sample. Foosball available to play if you don't want to watch the game on the big screen T.V. on the well worn but comfy couches. I would give zero stars if I could. I took my five year old son here and it was his first experience at a barber shop. At our first appointment we waited half an hour after to be seen after our scheduled time. Ok I get it, you are busy. Some type of acknowledgement that they at least saw us would have been great. Haircut turned out so that was a plus. Second appointment was a nightmare, or I should say lack of appointment. Turned up early for our 6pm appointment. We didn't see the barber there but I chalked it up to us just being early. After waiting 15 minutes after our appointment we find out Derrick isn't even there and has given his appointments to someone else... who also isn't there. It was really sad to see that no one really cared. The replacement barber who they said was taking over his appointment had left at 6 and hadn't spoken a word to us, so I'm pretty sure he did not know that he was supposed to see my son. I wouldn't have cared if it was an appointment for myself but to make a 5 year old child wait that long and really just dismiss us was appalling. We will never step foot in there again. read more

I had 2 consecutive haircuts at this place. I was pretty happy with the results despite the messy/loud atmosphere. On my third appointment, I was running late, so I called to let my barber (Payton) know that I am outside trying to find a parking spot. He said "well, I have someone else taking care of, you're late." I said I am exactly 7 minutes late! He said "Well, that's exactly our threshold; 7 minutes." Sure, because I am dealing with NASA! Not only a straight lie, but also a very unapologetic attitude. I won't be back. And will make sure to warn all my acquaintances. Went here since I heard these guys are the ones to go to for a GOOD haircut. I had a meh haircut from another barber shop on the south end of Commercial. D Gates at big Derrick's was able to fix what the previous barber shop screwed up and made it right for me so now he is my regular barber. He does a really good job. As you can see Derrick is nothing but condescending and immature. I make an honest review and met with blatant harassment via messages from Derrick C and a bit of admitted cyber stalking. From his behavior, I highly recommend people go to other shops that have multiple and better reviews. He does sound highly skilled at cutting hair but in the barber shop business you have to be more accommodating and pro social. Unfortunately, Derrick lacks those skills. If he was smart,he wouldn't have posted such sarcasm and let it go. But I am the customer, so it's my fault... And we again witness Derrick's lack of maturity. A review late? Maybe I work graveyard? And I came in your shop, asked for service and was rudely told no and given a card. I tried to be a customer but obviously you didn't have time nor the basic decency to talk like an adult.
