Large portions Ravioli was a little on the doughy side. Overall this place was a good choice because the waitress and service were top notch

Combo Pizza with black olives

Where else can you get decent white wedding cake for dessert in Des Moines? Yes its old school, but they offer $10 corkage so you can being your best bottle. And again where else can you get chicken livers as a dinner? Even the fried chicken dinner takes me back to my childhood. Pizza is always a hit. Service was excellent with Debbie as our hostess. Pricing is reasonable. Specials change all the time, but you can always ask about the Cajun chicken pasta. They usually accommodate. They do wonders with larger groups and the food comes out hot.

Great start to a quick trip in and out of Des Moines included lunch at Baratta's. Excellent service by Tawnee, a lovely dinner salad, delicious Amaggio pasta and Chicken Carbonara and wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. We'll be back when we are in town. Highly recommend.

Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad
Tina Marie A.

I arranged a surprise birthday party for my son's 27th birthday. There were twenty guests total. I ordered the Caesar chicken salad which was delicious. My son had the homemade spinach and cheese tortellini which he loved. My daughter had the cavatelli and said it was delightful. Our waitresses name was Twanee. I requested a straw and was screamed at, "I PUT IT RIGHT THERE!" I apologized explaining I have a visual deficit. She was very rude and disrespectful to my son, and to the rest of the party, with the exception of one guest who is a regular patron of the establishment. I ordered spinach artichoke dip, which came out after my meal and after everybody else's appetizer and meal. Twanee NEVER refilled any of the guests waters but was on top of bringing alcoholic beverages. I even requested water and never received it. I expressed that the spinach artichoke dip was very spicy. Twanee screamed at me, "It's homemade!" When we went to cut the cake I was looking for a cake cutter and she screamed, "It's over there can't you see it?" My 86 year old father was charged for a lemonade. He approached Twanee to take it off his bill and she screamed at my father, "Sir, GO SIT DOWN!" She made my father cry. My daughter-in-law is pregnant and was charged for Pino Giorgio. My son was forced to pay for it. The food was absolutely delicious but the service we received from Twanee was unacceptable. In thirty-five years of eating out I've NEVER received such poor service. Baratta's has lost nineteen customers due to Twanee's action.

The atmosphere was absolutely perfect (The Name Alone had me excited already) My server came just about right as soon as I sat down and brought me a menu, I didn't grab pictures of the menu as they are already online. Anyways, I had ordered The Baja Burger with a side of the specially seasoned fries which are just the utmost delicious. I have to admit for such a small place I wasn't expecting HOMEMADE RANCH I can't stress it enough that any place that has homemade ranch has my heart completely. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a good burger that fills you up and doesn't make your stomach hurt. Thank you so much The Lucky Horse

It was a beautiful evening, so we decided to sit outside on their patio. Shouldn't admit it...but we had to ask our waitress what the lettering was on the side of the building (see picture) - but hay, we are near Drake. Following a Lucky Casa Margarita (see picture), we ordered our meals. My wife ordered the Dogtown Burger w/ Onion Rings (see picture) and I went with the Boneless Wings w/ Blueberry BBQ sauce (see picture). As is our modus operandi, we shared tastes of each and both thoroughly enjoyed both plates. While me wife isn't usually a big berry sauce person, she agreed that the wings were very good. Unfortunately, I was too full to sample one of the awesome looking desserts on the menu...so that will be the reason for another stop! By the back door, the stale stench of cigarettes lingers like the last guest at a party nobody remembers throwing. Hardly perfume, but there it is. Some places come with a little baggage. I ordered the Uncle Denny: a smash patty with grilled onion, lettuce, Dijon, Duke's mayo, pepper jelly, and American cheese on a sesame bun. Yeah, I stole that from their menu. A combination that understands desire better than most dating profiles. The beef is where the courtship starts. That dark, griddle-kissed crust. The cheese surrendering to the heat. Grilled onions settling into the whole delicious mess. Then the Dijon cuts through, and the pepper jelly slips in with sweetness and a little trouble. Duke's makes sure nobody leaves clean. You lean forward. Both hands on the bun. For a few minutes, your phone can go to hell. There's something deeply intimate about a good burger: the attention it demands, the small indignities you willingly accept, the sauce you discover on your wrist after you've already decided you're in love. Bourdain said it best: "I'm just a cheap, nasty, low down, trailer park burger slut". The tots belong here, too. Little fried accomplices, useful for stretching out the affair between bites. The Uncle Denny, tots, and a drink came to damn near $18. Enough to make you pause before paying. Enough that the burger had better give you something to remember. This one will. I'll go back. Probably order the same thing. I always do. There's a point in every romance when you stop pretending you're interested in seeing other people.

Jack's opened up on the Southside last November and has been getting some traction for their burgers and tenderloin. The menu is simple enough at just one page... Dimly lit like many neighborhood bar and grills. The decor has a rustic feel. Lots of wood, metal, and "leather." It's seat yourself. Seating is a bar and barstools. There's at least one high top and multiple low top tables and chairs. They have a small parking lot in front of the restaurant right off of SW 9th and there appears to be an adjacent parking lot that can be used too. We were greeted right away when we walked in and the bartender/our server told us to take a seat anywhere we wanted to. Our drink orders were taken a minute or two later. I can't remember if we were given menus or if they were at the table with the condiment caddy and extra napkins. When asked I ordered the tenderloin (just onions and pickles...mustard was at the table) and fries. My daughter wasn't very hungry and she just ordered the pretzel bites. Those two items and two fountain drinks were $29 and change before tip. They accept cash and cards. The bill is presented to you at the table and the payment is picked up from the table as well. There's a small surcharge for using a card to cover the service fees. I was able to steal a couple of pretzel bites from my daughter. Both of us really liked these. The cheese sauce that came with the pretzel bites is a beer sauce, but one that isn't overwhelmingly flavored like beer. It's subtle and VERY good. Served hot and fresh! Same with the tenderloin and fries! Hot and fresh and both, without a doubt, right out of the fryer... The tenderloin is obviously hand cut and breaded. It's a thicker tenderloin...and I like that. I'm not a thin hubcap guy where the bun is almost an afterthought and is basically a waste of real estate on the plate. I want to taste the pork along with the breading and the condiments. This tenderloin checked the boxes for me. I'd order the tenderloin here again in a heartbeat! One memorable thing about this visit was a conversation with a Vietnam era veteran who was sitting at the bar waiting for a to go order. The cook had called out to ask if I wanted mayo on the tenderloin. I'd laughed and asked... "What kind of an animal puts mayo on a tenderloin?" So no. He and I had something in common besides service. The holy trinity...pickles, onion, and mustard only. And I'm just TEASING! You do you! My girlfriend eats mayo on her tenderloins too and we've been together for over a decade. And I rib her every time. It's not my fault some people weren't raised right... Lol I was a Nick's guy. Is this a Nick's replacement? No. BUT it's a great tenderloin and not far off Nick's as far as thickness and tenderness of the pork. I'm still looking. To say our server Raina (I might not have spelled this correctly) was personable and friendly is an understatement... She's one of those national treasures. Someone who can make almost anyone smile and not only do you walk away with a good experience you feel like you have a new friend. If the food had sucked I'd still recommend Jack's on her service alone. Raina shared with us that there is no Jack. That the restaurant's name comes from their signature sauce. Can't use the whole name of one of the sauce's base ingredients... Trademark and all. Lol I wish I could remember the cook's name... She popped out of the kitchen a couple of times and Raina said that she is the one that makes the magic happen. And from the taste of the food she might not have been joking... They offer daily food and drink specials and it looks like items often pop up that aren't regular menu items... So watch their Facebook page too. Once again... A neighborhood bar and grill for the win. Great people and food! Jack's has several TVs available to watch the games on. Raina was wearing a Hawkeyes shirt and there's a Hawkeyes sign behind the bar... Being an Iowa State fan I kind of avoided talking about football. Anyone else notice who the Cy-Hawk trophy went home with yesterday? Go State! https://www.facebook.com/JacksPlacedsm
