It's an upscale little bar with very few tables for dining. We came late in the afternoon so there were very few people there. There's no menu so the waiter has to explain what dishes they have or you can tell them what kind of food you want to eat and they will give you some suggestions. The waitress spoke English really well, but she was just a bit pushy. She kept trying to convince us to order more food, but we were really just there to grab a drink and get a few small bites as a late afternoon snack. It was pretty pricey compared to how cheap the food is generally in Barcelona. We only ate 3 small dishes and had 1 beer and 1 vermut, but we paid 80 Euro! The food was good, but I don't think I would want to pay that much for how small the plates are. They had a lot of seafood dishes so we stuck to those. Everything tasted fresh and was made right in front of us. I really liked the large shrimp or mini lobster, not sure what it was but they said it came from the Mediterranean Sea. I've never had that in the U.S. before. It's delicious just hard to remove the shell. If prices were more affordable i would definitely give this place 4 stars. read more

We had lunch here on the recommendation of the concierge at the Cotton House Hotel. What a joy. It's set up mostly like a bar, but a very classy one. Mostly high top or bar seating but with one large regular table and one very small one. We sat at the latter next to a piano, the keys cover for which served as our ledge for bottles, glasses etc. They have a menu but the server comes by to discuss your desires and to create a tasting menu to share, while also asking about your dietary needs and exclusions. We chose three shared courses plus bread. First was two scallops each on a slice of pork jowl. Perfectly cooked, crisp on the outside and sweet and tender inside, the scallops were superb, and when eaten with tranches of the pork, it was a great taste! The jowl was so tender it seemed like foie gras. Then came a wilted spinach salad with melted goat cheese, nuts, sun dried cherries, tomatoes, with a rich balsamic vinaigrette. Yum. Finally we had a thick slice of slow cooked suckling pig with a crisp skin accompanied by a rectangular slice of mashed potatoes which were also crisped on the outside. Stunning combo. If not already, Bar Mut should be on a top 5 of Best Restaurants in Spain list easily!!! Let's start with how well the establishment is branded which was a big one for me working in an industry where branding is everything! A simple black and white sign with a simple but clean font used consistently between the signage, menu and website (Didn't see a lot of this in BCN, unless a major franchise like Hard Rick Cafe). What absolutely amazed me was the short film of the restaurant displayed on the home page of their website. Great promotional tactic! In the 16 minute long film displays each item on the menu accompanied by great actors I must say! The restaurant has a cosy modern chic look I would recommend you experience during dinner time. The ambience was perfect for a romantic date, the music soothing and at a volume that allows you to enjoy still being able to carry out a conversation. By the bar displayed fresh seafood on ice underneath a glass display, behind that a small open kitchen where you are able to see the chefs freshly preparing some of the smaller items. Service was consistent which I didn't experience much in Europe. Server checked in every 10 minutes or so to make sure we were good. The food came at a perfect temperature and in the EXACT order in which we ordered them which I also haven't experienced as of recently. Nothing is worse than getting your salad or appetizer with or after your main. Presentation? Outstanding, the plates were prepared beautifully and with the lighting in the restaurant, easy to capture! Everything about this restaurant made the moment. I'm a huge proponent of the 'save the best for last' philosophy - when I was a child, I carefully ate only the toasted oats in my Lucky Charms cereal so I could later indulge in the sweet rush which came from savoring a series of deliberately homogenous spoonfuls of straight marshmallow. So, it's no surprise that I saved what I knew would be our most dramatically delicious meal for our very last night in Barcelona. And it was SO much more special than every last sweet milk-soaked Lucky charm marshmallow in the entire world! I had no reason to doubt it would be, as two of my closest friends recommended Bar Mut after their own magical experience the year prior. So we made our reservation for a Saturday night (or more precisely, a Catalan-speaking colleague made the reservation for us) and we looked forward to our date with Barcelona's sexiest restaurant with wild anticipation for the next seven days. Tick, tock. Finally, Saturday night arrived and we dressed in our chicest ensembles - black everything, our highest heels and smoky eyes. Though we knew Bar Mut is more casual than that, we also knew that our end goal involved a dalliance with what many consider Europe's finest bar: Mutis, the clandestine couture cocktail lounge located directly above Bar Mut. More on that in a bit! Everything about Bar Mut is beautifully-done, in simple, vintage-chic styling. I loved that we were greeted by just about everyone working in the restaurant, and how the handsome servers crouch on the floor to talk with you at eye-level. This is a seriously intimate way of going about business; it certainly won our wide-eyed attention. Instead of offering a printed menu, the server goes over all the specials in full detail from memory (yes, they can speak English if you'd like). It's impressive, and it's hot! We started with a voluptuous bottle of Coma Vella wine, a vibrant blend comprised of Carinena, Garnacha Peluda, Garnacha Pais, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes. It set the stage beautifully for the parade of somewhat decadent dishes to follow, including a rich risotto and the house specialty, the crispy-skin pork. Whoa! The most excellent piece of pork I've ever had the pleasure of trying is difficult to describe in words; you'll just have to examine the photo that I've added! But do know that if they are serving it, you should order it. Absolutely! As we finished dinner we were asked if we could want for anything at all, and we decided to go for it: We oh-so-sweetly requested access to the aforementioned members-only club, Mutis. After our server spoke to several of his colleagues and made a call (and what felt like FOREVER), we were personally escorted to the base of the steps leading up to the exclusive Mutis. Well, the wait was indeed worth it because Mutis turned out to be every bit as 'Midnight in Paris' as Brett D so eloquently described. From the painstakingly-crafted cocktails, to the gorgeous staff who dotes on everyone, to the jazz band imported from New Orleans, to the patrons dancing like it was the end of the world, we now need another word for 'sexy' because it's simply inadequate, too underwhelming. Don't let the name fool you, this place is no dog. Visited for lunch and surprised there were only a few guests yet every table had a reservat sign and they had a book. Before I left they were full. This place is small. A tapas bar actually centered around the bar. Fresh seafood is the star here. A bit quirky that they have no menu. The server says he is the menu and asks what would you like? I ask the obvious question what do you have? After a bit of back and forth between broken English and Spanish I arrive at an order for a shrimp starter followed by tuna tataki. The two head on shrimp were quite incredible. Seemed like poached in a butter based herb infused sauce. So tender and perfectly cooked dare I say the best ever. The tuna was not a favorite for me. Four large cubes seared and covered with something that looks like Rice Krispies, the unsweetened version. It was a bit heavy and salty without enough contrasting flavor. Wasabi sauce was lacking. Many other choices to be had here if you have time for the Q&A menu game. Low points: As stated by other reviewers about the bill, there were definitely elements of surprises when it came to the pricing. We were excited about this place because of the great reviews and a friend had recommended it. It did not turn out well. Maybe because it was the early seating or that we dined outside, but the service was terrible. Fortunately, my wife had looked at the Yelp pictures so she showed these to the waitress and they then figured out an order. If my wife had not done that I don't know what would have happened as our waitress rushed to the next table after telling my wife what they had and did not have based on the pictures. We were able to get two tapas plates and grilled sea bass. The sea bass was about 10 oz with some vegetables for 48 euros which seemed high to us. The sea bass was fine but nothing special. The tapas plates were fine. One of the other staff members recommended a Tinto de Verano which was very good but I had to flag down another staff member to tell me what it was. After taking our order we never saw our waitress again until she brought the bill. The local folks next to us did better because they ordered all tapas plates and we noticed they had no pricey main dishes. For a restaurant that appears to rely on service because of their claim to freshness and quality, it was a big miss. Loved this place. Were wandering around in the Eixample district trying to find a half decent place open for dinner on the 26th December (also a holiday in Spain), when we stumbled upon this place. The host was gracious enough to squeeze a seating for two even though we were walk-ins (another big no-no in Barcelona if not at touristy places). The meal was beyond brilliant. They didn't give us a menu but we had a brilliant waitress who was exemplary in explaining the dishes and helping us decide, in impeccable English. We had some Galician scallops done in the shell with olive oil, sea salt and parsley/basil. It was so good, we were sopping up the juices with their bread after. We ordered a plate of grilled in-season vegetables. Usually, I wouldnt write about vegetables, but boy oh boy. The flavors, and some local greens that I didn't recognize and the cooking in their Josper over made this one of the standout dishes. Our waitress also suggested a traditional Catalan holiday soup, Escudella de Nadal. It was a lovely delicate broth, pasta and meatballs, accompanied by blood sausage, chickpeas, potatoes, cabbage, and pork chitlins on the side to create your own taste. Every single accompanying piece was yummy on its own, but the end product was brilliant. Something we would have never usually ordered given its extremely traditional status and the fact that is usually served only around Christmas. Kudos to our waitress. We followed this with the best dish of the night. A piece of flounder-like fish, that was grilled on top of vegetables with sea salt. The incredible technique and freshness/quality of the fish, had me licking my chops long after we devoured it. Highly recommended. The food here was overall great, but they really seem to do seafood very well. For dessert we had the highly recommended (from two of the servers) "French toast" even though it sounded odd. However, it was a Spanish style piece of delectable fried airy sweet bread on a pool of dulce de leche with a scoop of the most amazing smoked ice-cream I have ever had. This place could be classified as an upscale Tapas bar (they sure are not cheap), but this is imaginative, modern tapas that you won't find in your typical tourist traps on Las Ramblas. There is a lot of authentic food from Catalan and other areas of Spain with a touch of modernism and originality. They also have a good wine list, and we were very happy with our bottle of the 2013 Els Pics from the Priorat region of Catalonia, with its prominent Grenache makeup with some blend of Cariñena, Syrah and Cabernet. I would return here without a doubt. This was our best meal in Spain and given the quality of the food, very reasonable as well (as frou-frou dining in Barcelona can quickly drain your budget/wallet). read more

At this point adapted to Spanish time, everything from shop openings to meals occurring hours later than they do Stateside, it was with the foresight to make reservations that two diners were welcomed immediately upon entering at 22h30, an bilingual young man guiding guests through a menu written on Chalkboards with a few specials also quoted off-hand. Famous for its focus on Catalan Cuisine and well sourced ingredients, the kitchen split across two floors in constant motion with the small room packed from open to close and reservations strongly encouraged for those who do not wish to wait for more than an hour, it was after brief indecision with Beer and good Olives already presented that the choice was made to order in rounds, a total of nine items paced out over the course of 130 minutes with only two considerably large taking into account the day's already substantial amount of eating. Independently owned and operated, the well-polished service and a Chef-driven menu allowing Bar Mut to serve the sort of plates other Tapas Restaurants shy away from for the sake of accessibility and diverse crowds, it was immediately on being told that the "Chef's Croquettas" were made with Black Pudding that two were ordered, everything about the combination of funky Sausage and creamy Cheese in golden Breading living up to admittedly high expectations. Promising pristine Seafood, the Steamed Mussels in White Wine, plenty of Butter and Garlic as good as anything one might find in Belgium or France made even more delicious when taken bite for bite with Tomato-brushed Bread, it was with the large pot quickly dispatched of that a €26 plate of Octopus arrived, the Cephalopod charred but tender while Potatoes were skin-on and soft with bold aromatics from Paprika. Unable to resist crispy Potatoes in addition to the tender ones above, Bar Mut's Patatas Bravas paired with both Mayonnaise and a smoky sauce reminiscent of Chipotle Peppers, it was alongside the sizable glass bowl that a thick slice of caramelized Duck Liver was served atop grilled Bread with Figs and a Balsamic drizzle, the €6 dish an absolute steal while the €26 Paella was also quite a bargain with four King Prawns served on a bed of Saffron-rich Rice with plenty of crusty Socarrat around the edges. Finishing all but a few spoonfuls of rice, the clock now turned over to the following day and two tasting-menus finally catching up in terms of appetite, it was perhaps a foolhardy move to order not one but two desserts, though in reality it would be difficult to decide which one better as the Catalan Cream came warm beneath bruleed Sugar and slowly melting Vanilla Ice Cream while the "French Toast" was delightful with crackling exterior overlying sweet Custard. read more

Great place to stop after you've braved the lines at the nearby La Pedrera. Trust me, you'll need to sit down after spending an hour or two taking in Gaudi's masterpiece apartment. The high-topped marble tables and dark wood lend itself to a clubby feel. Complete with the club soda syphons I've come to recognize as accompaniments to Spanish vermut (vermouth), I had a feeling we were in for a treat. Since our first visit (we came back for dinner on a different night) was a mid-day snack, we opted for one dish to share - the Carpaccio d'Ou Ferrat. It's nothing I've seen before, and I'll be elated if I ever see it again on a menu. It can be best described as a plate of runny egg, shrimp, herbs and something that could be crispy fried onions on top. It was sublime; a dish I will file away in my memory banks, since I have a feeling I will never come across it again. Our second visit was for dinner and we made piggies of ourselves. It was heaven. Steak and foie - three tiny pieces of VERY rare (just like I like it and can never find it in the U.S.) topped with a generous piece of foie. Buttery, calorie-laden and delicious. And this is coming from someone who doesn't typically like the taste of foie gras. Clams steamed in a ton of garlic and wine - good follow up to rich steak. Fresh and tasty. Bar Mut's take on cannelloni - leek acted as the traditional pasta "wrapper" with fresh crab inside and topped with lobster sauce. Concept was great, but the leek was way too tough and hard to cut through. Steak tartare - goes with my love of rare steak. It doesn't get more rare than tartare. I don't order this very often, actually I don't know if I've ever had it in the U.S. Bar Mut's version was perfectly seasoned with lots of capers, mustard and worcestershire. well seasoned. We had a lovely dinner at Bar Mut - definitely one of our favorite meals in Barcelona. Two separate friends had recommended it to us, so our expectations were high. At first, the no menus thing was a little nerve-wracking, but it wound up working out really well. Easily one of the best meals we had in Barcelona. Be sure to call ahead and make a reservation. We ended up swapping our inside reservation for a table outside. The street is a little busy, but that was okay for us. We shared a shrimp and egg yolk carpaccio. It was amazing. AMAZING. It's egg yolks poured over shrimp, then sprinkled with chives and pine nuts. Then they put a pile a potato shreds all fried and crispy. Stir it up and inhale. We ended up getting bread on the side so we could sop up the yolky goodness. I loved this dish. Another favorite was the spinach salad. I know it sounds basic AF, but it was delicious. The dressing was very light, the figs were so perfectly ripe. I didn't realize there was a brie cheese melted in the bottom of the bowl- so maybe I should have stirred everything up. I feel it didn't need the cheese. We also shared the beef medallions topped with foie gras. The beef was like butter and the foie had a perfect sear. I would order this again! For dessert our server recommended the french toast dish- it was a burnt sugar toast with ice cream and a cookie crumble. If you're a fan of caramel, get this! read more

Was not sure what to expect and was a bit surprised when they told me there is no menu here. I told the waiter what I liked and didn't like and he gave us examples of what they had for the night. The concept is that the kitchen only sources the freshest ingredients of the day so each days items are different. We got the cochon, grilled peppers and the cockles and fresh toast with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The cochon and the grilled peppers were absolutely delicious. The cockles was fresh but needed a bit more flavor to it. Lastly although we didn't plan on having dessert, they told us the fresh toast was pretty light so we ordered that to try. This was one of the best fresh toast I've ever had. It was not overly sweet and was very light and paired so well with the ice cream. Service was friendly and not overbearing. I'd like to give this place ZERO stars for the rude service I received last night. My mother, visiting Barcelona for the first time from Hawaii, and I walked in at 7pm. The guy working that evening stated "We are serving food, but at 8pm the menu will change and you will have to leave." I was shocked but thought I could be mistaken, so I repeated what he told me. He stated I was correct. I stated "We do not understand why we must leave. We will not be rushed. So we will dine elsewhere." Huge thanks to my friend who recommended this place to me a while back. And I'm so glad I thought of going here on this night. This was a strange experience, but good nonetheless. My friend & I were starved, and wanted something nice for his last night in Barcelona. Though we didn't have reservations, and the place was packed, the staff made accommodations for us - we could stay from 9:30 to 10:15 because they needed that table for a reservation arriving at 10:15. We were thankful that they made room for us. Although we didn't get to try too many things, we did get a couple of some of their best dishes, and shared a bottle of wine. The egg carpaccio was phenomenal (I love egg... you can never go wrong by serving me egg), and a fish tempura dish - I don't remember the fish. Both were cooked to perfection, the wine was divine... our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer, try more food, and cap it off with dessert. I will definitely return (special occasion, of course, as it's not cheap - but also - it's not *that* expensive). The decor was wonderful, too. Even with all the hype this place delivered and then some. Ordered the steak with foie, egg carpaccio, and octopus and each one of them was incredible. The octopus was without question the best I've ever had and sadly the best I will ever have because there is no way it can be made better without the assistance of wizardry. One of my favorite two restaurants in Barcelona (other is Passadis del Pep). The atmosphere in here is great: an upscale Bodega or Vinoteca. The predominately seafood selection is very fresh. The open kitchen sens delicious aromas into the mostly bar-seated restaurant. The wine is..... Well, the writing... I mean the wine is on the wall. What a lovely little bar. The atmosphere of an old Irish pub and the food is absolutely amazing. We ordered goose liver tacos that blew me away. The four stars is because not everything that we ordered was amazing but some of the dishes were just good. Great experience I would go back any day. read more

This place is amazeballs. I have eaten at many restaurants all round spain including couple Michelin restaurants and Bar Mut is what I still think about and tell others about. Whats best about this place is you can do half orders on many of the dishes if you want to try many things. I didnt get to try everything, but im sure they are all good here. But I must say...The absolute must get is the Carpaccio d'Ou Ferrat and the Braised Octopus. I'm not an egg freak and when I do eat egg, its usually the whites and I discard the yolk. But this dish is all about the Yolk...Raw. I was just Mind Blown by it. The braised octopus is hands down the most tender octopus I have ever had in my Life. The fork could rip through the flesh with little to no effort and when it enters your mouth to be chewed, you are practically swallowing it already because you feel like the chewing process is already complete. I also got the Filet Minon with Foie Gras on top, this dish can essentially be found at most bar/cafe in Barcelona so it wasn't anything that stood out to me and could be skipped and tried elsewhere. Just when you think this place is amazing, you get the bill and I was surprised at how cheap it was for the Mind Blown culinary experience I just went through. Awesome spot to grab dinner! Their menu changes daily and the waiter will come and talk to you about what you like to eat, drink, and any dietary restrictions. The suggestions were incredible- totally spot on to what we like. The fried egg appetizer is to die for. I've never had anything like it. When I was in Barcelona, after a long day morning of shopping, we dropped by this small bar for a bit of energy. Lovely tasty seafood. A glass of wine. What more does one need to rejuvenate? In fact, I ate at Bar Mut three times over that week. Two lunches and a dinner. Servers were all up on the freshest seafood and best preparations. I particularly love cephlapods (not fried), which, they accommodated beautifully. read more

Found this place on Yelp and based on the reviews felt we should give it a try. We spent 6 nights in Barcelona and I must say that this was by far our favorite dinner. The servers were all wonderful and super attentive! My friend and I shared a few dishes including the grilled prawns, ceviche and filets with fois grois. Great Spanish wine selections as well. We will be back without a doubt when we return in late September. read more
