Last week, my wife and I spent our honeymoon in Barcelona. My brother made a reservation at Bar Mut for us. We made the mistake of reading other reviews before heading to Bar Mut. As you might have noticed, the reviews are a little spotty and we had our guard up going in. Needless to say, we shouldn't have. This place was dynamite. We were seated and told that there was no menu. The waitress, Nora (we had to ask for her name, because she was stupendous), asked if we would be willing to let her choose our food for the evening. We said "sure," and then she asked us a few questions: Where we were from, what we liked and didn't like (mainly related to seafood, raw fish/meat, shellfish). We let Nora drive, and she nailed it. My wife ordered red wine and they offered her a rosé that they were promoting. She reluctantly said "yes," thinking she was being up-sold (it was delicious and she had two more glasses. The third was free..). I ordered an Estrella (our biggest regret was not ordering a cocktail. We were swimming in information and it just didn't occur to us). We had four dishes, they were all incredible. They were: 1) Baby Scallops - Served on their beautiful shell. Five in total. The lightest dish we were served, almost like an appetizer. Very good. 2) Iberic ham platter with tomato bread - A huge wooden board filled with incredible ham. A staple of the region, we ate this every chance we got around the city and it never disappointed. This might have been the best. A huge portion, too. The bread was delicious and I recommend ordering this every chance you get. 3) Ceviche and avocado - What a pleasant surprise. I am not a big ceviche fan, but my wife is. We split this dish and I was sold after my first bite. It was served as a cylinder, ceviche on top of the avocado. The flavor in this dish might have been the best thing we ate on our honeymoon. 4) Sirloin Steak and foie gras - Another show stopper. Five good chunks of steak with foie gras sitting on each piece of steak with a really good demi-glaze. This was a super rich dish and made dessert impossible. After those four dishes, three glasses of beer, and three glasses of rosé, we decided to play the "how much is the bill" game. We both overshot by a fair amount. The bill came out to 118 euros and we gladly paid it. We considered ourselves very lucky to have landed a wonderful server in Nora. A lot of our experience in Europe during our trip was predicated on the service. Sometimes it's wonderful and sometimes it's not. If you aren't comfortable allowing someone else to pick your food, go in with a game plan. The food is posted on a blackboard in the front of the restaurant and many of the reviews about the food and certain dishes can be helpful. The waiter will give you an opportunity to choose your own food, so take it if you want. Or order two things and let the waiter choose two things. Go into Bar Mut with an open mind. If we were back in Barcelona this is a place we would return to in a heartbeat. Just a fantastic experience and a fabulous meal. read more

Please note that this review is solely based on our dining experience at the Bar Mut's sister restaurant, Bar Mutis, the exclusive jazz club located upstairs. Solely as an exclusive, private jazz club, I would give it 5 stars. I would absolutely go back for their amazing live music, delicious cocktails, and the authentic décor. Unfortunately, we had no desire to stay and enjoy it after our dining experience... Our hotel supposedly made us an 8pm reservation for 4 people at Bar Mut, the tapas restaurant on the ground floor. We knew about their exclusive club upstairs so we were hoping to enjoy another highly recommended tapas restaurant, Bar Mut, and try to gain access to Bar Mutis after dinner. Unfortunately, the hostess could not find our dinner reservation. Given that it was a Saturday night, we knew it would be difficult to get reservations anywhere else so we asked if there was any way they could accommodate us. Fortunately, we had a fluent Spanish speaker with us who spent at least 20 minutes trying to speak to the staff to figure out if there were any other options. We were thrilled when Bar Mut decided to give us bar seating at Bar Mutis. We were told that we would be offered the same menu as Bar Mut so we were incredibly thankful. Somehow, even with a Spanish speaker, either we were lied to or something was lost in translation. When we asked for a menu, the server told us that HE was our menu. Interesting. He then proceeds to tell us that we would be served a set menu consisting of 4 courses that were to be shared. We were confused and annoyed by this news but it was so late (almost 10pm) that we had no choice but to stay put. On top of that, no accommodation was made for our friend who did not eat meat. The food took forever to be served. The first two courses were the only items our friend could eat and they also happened to be the smallest portions of salad and tuna carpaccio. The third item was so unmemorable that I cannot even remember what it was but that likely had something to do with the insane finale. We were served a really large piece of rare, bloody steak. It was as though they forgot to cook it. If it was not for their cocktails, I am not sure I could have even given Bar Mutis 1 star! The drinks were delicious but at 20euros+ each, how could you expect anything less?? The bartender was very meticulous and friendly but the rest of the staff only continued to ruin our experience. Throughout the meal, servers kept coming over to clear the food they had literally just given us and others told us that we needed to free up the bar space because the entertainment was scheduled to begin. At this point, we had not even received all of our food yet! The restaurant should never have agreed to seat us if they expected us to vacate even before their kitchen could prepare our food. The 300euro price tag was ridiculous and clearly, we were taken advantage of. Despite the amazing band that started to play towards the end of our meal, we could not get out of Bar Mutis fast enough. Came here with my family a few nights before Christmas. This place got great reviews so I'm disappointed to report that our experience was sub par. The restaurant is teeming with waiters, but we were completely neglected. We would ask for more water and get it about three tapas dishes later. The cheeseboard was fine and the fish was okay, but the 52 euro steak was rock hard and a complete salt bomb. When we got the check, we discovered that they had charged us for a dish we didn't order, and had charged us for two bottles of wine rather than two glasses. This place seems to be on many "must-see" lists, but I can walk down the same street and find other restaurants that are just as good, if not better. It was certainly buzzing with both tourists and locals, and we were given a nice table in the corner, but you were definitely elbow to elbow with other diners, and the servers who had to get to the wine cabinet or the window had to practically climb over our table. The food itself was good, but it was expensive -- much pricier than similar places for the same (or better) quality. The service was good, but nothing spectacular. Just got back from Barcelona for work and met my boss and some coworkers at Bar Mut for dinner. I had no idea what I was getting into. I was treated, thus did not see the tab so this review is solely based on the experience and food. First off, we were a party of 8, the only English speakers, and comprised roughly half of the entire establishment. I was barraged with every tapas on the menu, numerous bottles of French and Spanish wines. The whole experience was incredible and this was hands down one of the best meals I've had in my life. Some of the highlights included Oxtail in marrow sauce, beef fillet with foie gras, shrimp in egg garlic sauce topped with micro shoestring potatoes. The environment itself is very non-pretentious and quaint. This was exactly what I had in my mind as a little Spanish tapas bar. So if you are in Barcelona, make a reservation, and enjoy! read more

Fantastic tapas! Of our three days worth of meals easily my favorite. I'm a big fan of ceviche and don't think I have tasted better (think spicy sea bass sushi mixed with avocado onion and plantain chips) the filet with foie gras was perfect and the octopus had to be some of the most tender (virtually no chew to it) some good wines to pick from and servers that are all very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. While I tend to go to new restaurants when visiting a second time, this one is one I'd go back to! read more

Only every other photo on Yelp for this place is this stupidly delicious dish. It was a no brainer. It's also what they're known for. I won't let the salad with melted cheese at the BOTTOM go unmentioned though. The staff was delightful and was happy to recite us their menu in English. Best meal in Barcelona! Bar Mut is located near the beginning of La Rambla, the popular main street in Barcelona. It's not cheap but the tapas are amazing. We ate at Bar Mut on a recommendation from our local guide, he was very friendly and didn't want to send us to a tourist trap, we were SO HAPPY. The service was excellent and the food was spectacular. I struggled a bit with the language challenge, be aware they do not have a lot of english speakers but that's OK!! They were so kind and responsive even with the language barrier. I didn't drink the wine so I can't speak to that, but the steak tar tar was my favorite dish, and we had the clams and muscles, I was definitely surprised by how flavorful everything was, it was an excellent balance. My husband and I came here on the recommendation of our concierge at our hotel in Barcelona. They booked a reservation for us for dinner -- a must as this place is quite small. They have two seatings for dinner, 8pm and 10pm (or around that time). We had a reservation at the 8pm seating. We were seated immediately and offered a glass of wine. Because we weren't familiar with the menu (it's all in Spanish), we told our server, who spoke fluent English, that we trusted his choices and wine pairings and to bring us whatever were his favorites. We were not disappointed. The wine flowed (and was delicious!) and we dined on egg carpaccio, octopus, steak, scallops, and foie gras. Dessert was a dense chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream. We absolutely enjoyed and loved our experience here and would recommend to anyone traveling through Barcelona. Just make sure to book a reservation! read more

Very few tables. We could barely fit in first table so we sat at a bar table. The waiter told us they don't have a menu. When we're been told this before it has always been over priced. They asked what we liked and brought several dishes. They were good but small as tapas are, however when we got the bill it was $140 euros for two. The food was good so we would not be unhappy with an 70 euro bill including our 1 wine each. I would not recommend you visit. The atmosphere and professional service (if we make an exception for the waitress keeping filling your Cava glass up to the top, as she would do with a glass of beer...) are a plus of this very cosy place... The food is also of a rather high standard: good products nicely cooked. The extremely unpleasant surprise of the bill at the end of the meal however wipes all the good feelings out. As mentioned in some other comments here, there is no menu card. In my opinion, it should not be a problem in itself, as I have been in other places like this in different countries, and this is fine: it puts an emphasis on a nice and professional staff. However, paying 80+ euros for 4 tapas (again, of rather good quality, but not exceeding some other much cheaper places) is not much one can except, no matter how nice the atmosphere and the pace are, and a menu card would certainly help a lot making wiser (if not simply rational) choices. I will only illustrate with one example: One tapas dish of 4 shrimps (average size) for... 32 Euros (and there is now way for you to know that when you place your order)... Add to this the "welcome drinks and olives" as well as the "farewell Catalonian chocolate" (none of them having been ordered) turning out to be explicitly charged in the bill and you get a place I would be close to call a scam... read more

My boyfriend and I went here on a Saturday night without reservations. Perhaps we were wrong in doing so especially since we really just wanted to go for a drink. We had read and heard so much about this place and had really been looking forward to it but our enthusiasm was gone the moment we walked in. First of all, my boyfriend is a native of Barcelona and we both live in NY so not only are we familiar with and expect excellent customer service, we also know our way around Barcelona. We were greeted with a less than warm welcome. As soon as we entered and told the hostess we just wanted to have a drink she told us that she couldn't give us a table even though the place was empty. At that point we were ready to turn around and walk out but she seemed to re-think her decision and gave us a spot, which was probably the worst spot she could find. We ordered a glass of wine each. We took a chance and asked the waitress to take our photo only to get a look of annoyance as if we were asking for way too much. I almost asked her to forget it since it was obviously too much trouble for her but she went ahead and took our photo. We stayed and finished our wine and honestly couldn't wait to get out of there. We were made to feel really uncomfortable. The hostess/waitress was rude and the only person who was somewhat friendly was a guy who may have been the manager. Overall, we do not recommend this place. All we wanted was to have a nice glass of wine and it ended up being a crappy experience. On our last night in Barcelona, I wanted to treat my mom to something special. We had been eating our way through Spain by bouncing between cafés for wine and tapas- definitely not a bad thing but I wanted to switch it up and have more of a sit down dinner for our final meal. The atmosphere at Bar Mut felt special from the moment we sat down. When I didn't know what wine to order, the waiter looked at me and asked, "¿confías en mí?" I'm so glad I did.... I love vino tinto and I probably drank an average of 4-5 glasses every day for the two weeks of our vacation- the wine that I had at Bat Mut was the best I've tasted not only in Spain but possibly in my life. The food matched the deliciousness of the wine, and I'd particularly recommend the spinach salad with Serrano cheese melted on the bottom and the braised pulpo. We also ate our first dessert of the entire trip (well worth the wait), a perfect torrija with goat cheese ice cream. No, this wasn't a spot for a great deal- but the incredibly attentive waitstaff, a well-paced meal, and the quality of wine and food made for an amazing night. Highly recommended. read more

Friends recommended this as the best tapas restaurant in Barcelona, so we made it our priority. It is a small restaurant with a great intimate but modern feel to it. We really loved our meal here. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. We ordered the razor clams which were prepared in herbed and salted virgin olive oil (must-order), the baby clams, the foie on beef which was perfectly seared and marinated, and a house special that I can try to describe but it consists of thin potato strips in egg yolk sauce with pine nuts and parsley that tastes much more delicate than it sounds. Add two glasses of wine and it was about $120 US. This is definitely one of my new favorites in Barcelona. (Check the hours before you go - lunch on Sunday didn't start until 1 pm and the full dinner menu wasn't available until after 8 pm, although we were there earlier and loved our dishes anyway.) read more
