The xc skiing at Devil's Thumb has always been a favorite for us, as far back as the 70's when it was just a rustic ski trail system with a small nordic supply shop. In recent years it became a full fledged resort with lodging where we have often stayed. We have also stayed in Winter Park, about 15 minutes away and driven over to ski. But we have now found our new favorite option. This is such a lovely place, both the facility and the charming staff. It is a better price value for us than some of the other options in the area, yet more than a simple motel in town. You know, like Goldilocks, "just right." I especially want to note that the (included) breakfast that host John cooks for the guests was wonderful, some sweet, some savory, warm, homemade, natural and ample for the start of even an hearty ski day. They take note in advance of special food needs and serve with a choice of time options. The log style of the building is rustic but nicely furnished. The rooms are well designed and furnished with high quality linens and have lots of storage as some guests stay for weeks. The views from each room are very pretty, some to the Continental Divide, some to the woodland. Every single staff member was friendly and helpful. The central lounge area was large, comfortable, attractive and clean and with a central fireplace. There are also some other smaller gathering areas to sit and talk or read if you wish to be outside your room. And there are also some family and dog friendly cabins on site if you want more than a bedroom. Personally, the rooms in the main inn are just right for my needs. We will absolutely be back. It is convenient to local xc skiing and also just a 15 minute drive past the Winter Park Resort and not far at all from several quality dinner options. We met other guests using the lodging for all of these reasons.

We've done two trips to TRR with our extended family -- before we leave, we're already planning our next visit, and calling our friends to come as well. Why so great? Well, for one, Scott and Meghan make the experience frictionless. We arrived on Sunday and barely made a plan after that. Every night, they helped us plan our next day. Did we want to do a trail ride? Hike? Fish? Massage? Relax in our room? Whatever we wanted to do, every detail was planned. And our young kids went off on their own adventures with the incredible staff of wranglers and counselors. And the food. Oh, the food. On a typical vacation with family, every few hours I'm thinking about when and where we'll take the kids to eat. At TRR, they literally rang a breakfast/lunch/dinner bell, called everyone to a central hall, and served a delicious, family-style meal. And the nights all brought new adventures, from a cookout to a private concert to a "fancy dinner" for the grown ups (while the kids played capture the flag). On the last day, the whole ranch gathers for a rodeo, and we got to watch our normally timid kids jump headfirst into barrel rides and keyhole tricks... followed by a nighttime square dance I'll never forget. We had more than enough space to spread out. The kitchen is a chef's dream with high end appliances and every kind of dish and glass you would need to entertain. Most rooms have their own bathroom. The staff is very personable and helpful for local tips. The breakfast was very good. They cook a hot breakfast to order. Our first morning there, we had a hiccup and I think we were forgotten about after we ordered food. We waited an hour and finally left. We were so late getting on the mountain. We didn't get our first run til 11. Other than that one issue, everything has been great and the breakfast the following two mornings came out within mins. The room was well appointed, the hosts were delightful and full of recommendations for the village. The courtyard is adorable but it was a bit too chilly to spend much time there. Walking distance to everything in the village. And breakfast was SO good. They went out of their way to offer vegan and gluten free options which was so kind. Even had handmade lattes and barista drinks by request. All included!

Covered parking under the hotel completed the arrangements, and we even were able to see a couple of deer browsing at the base of one of the ski lifts that runs adjacent to the property. The only downside was our door wouldn't latch properly, and the maintenance had gone home for the evening, so that made it tough to believe our belongings were secure in the room. For meals we found better deals by driving down to Avon with a more relaxed vibe.

The guy was little to no help as he "just went to bed after we booked this spot" and that there is nothing he can do to help. At first, I chose motel because it…read morewas dog-friendly but their rules are that you cannot leave pets alone in rooms even in crates which I get (due to barking) so I left my pup home because hot springs don't allow dogs and I wasn't willing to leave him in the car in single digit temps. I chose the motel because it was close to Hot Sulfur Hot Springs. Staff seemed annoyed that I was checking in and during pretty much every interaction after that. Pizza and sandwiches available made at motel but super expensive for what you get but really no other options for food unless you go to Granby. I picked up a newspaper laying in the ground in front of the office door and front desk clerk scowled at me and threw it in the back office after I set it in counter. I get that it was a holiday and they were busy but I experienced really poor customer service. Some positives: the bed was comfortable and room was warm. No coffee makers in rooms so I walked to office in the morning in my PJ's and was given two cups of coffee in styrofoam cups with no lids. Got back to room and tripped and spilled coffee on bed accidentally. I told management right away as I was checking out. They texted me a few hours after I checked out and said they were going to charge me an additional $50 for the blanket because they couldn't get the stain out. I find that ironic as the clean towels in the bathroom hanging up when I got there had stains all over them. I get that they are a small/town business trying to make a buck but hospitality, kindness and courtesy go a long way. I want to help support small businesses during challenging covid times but hospitality is important. I'd recommend driving the extra 15-20 minutes from Granby or Grand Lake and staying at a hotel with much better amenities, rooms and service if you're planning on going to hot springs. For this stay, the convenience of how close Canyon Motel was to hot springs was not worth it.
