Pork plate with slaw and JoJo's
    Rhett B.

I live an hour away from Fort Payne and have been wanting to try one of the few BBQ places Fort Payne has to offer. I picked the BBQ Place for the high rating and the fact that they have a dish on the "100 Dishes You should try in Alabama Before You Die." Sadly, I have to mostly disagree with the high rating of other Yelp reviewers. I'll start out with what I liked. First of all, my sweet tea was refreshingly sweet and perfect. Second, I really liked the BBQ sauce. I couldn't tell much difference between the mild and hot sauce but both sauces had a tangy, sweet, vinegary taste to them. There is an extra hot that comes in a bottle that looks like it should be worchestershire sauce, but it isn't a joke. Third, the slaw was really creamy, diced fine, and was on the sweet side. Last, my large pork plate was $7 and then I had to add a drink. So it was a good portion of food for a good price. Despite all of that, the main reason I am giving them a 2 star is because of the pork. It was chopped but just needed something else to it. The pork was very bland in my opinion and it just sat in the sauce. I have ate a lot of BBQ from so many places and sadly, I have had worse. But this pork to me was just edible. The Jojos for me, was just too much fried goodness. Why did I have to grow-up? Haha In my younger days, it wouldn't have bothered me. But the Jojos are unique because I have never been to another restaurant that cuts and fries their potatoes that way. The chicken sauce is a familiar pinkish sauce you have seen at Zaxby's, Guthrie's, etc...but it didn't have any bite to it like those places I just mentioned. I always want to love BBQ joints and there were some good things at the BBQ Place. But the blandness of the pork, which the sauce could not save, just makes me not want to return. Most places prepare pork easier. They have a beef plate but I can't imagine what beef would be like after trying the pork.

An old photo of the first BBQ Place experience we had BBQ sandwich, baked beans and jojos, and a sweet tea!

I've officially been going to this place just about every Saturday for the past few years, and it never gets old! The owner, Matt, is friendly and an all-around nice guy. The girl at the front is fabulous too! Remembers us every time we come in (which is quite a lot). The BBQ is my absolute favorite of all the BBQ I've had. Their ribs are my husband's favorites--he has said multiple times, "These ribs are the best I have ever had!" The sweet tea is delicious, and you can believe me because I am a sweet tea junkie. Last but not least, the jojos... they are my absolute favorite item on the menu. Thinly sliced potatoes are put in the frier and turn into absolute perfection They taste INCREDIBLE with the "chicken sauce" (we just call it the jojos sauce), which is similar to a Zaxby's style sauce. You must go!!!!! And if you go on a Saturday, you can pretty well count on running into me

When we drove up, we could smell the hickory smoke and saw the smoker on the sidewalk in front. When we walked in, we were told that menus are on the checkout counter, so I went to grab 2, but before we knew it, the uncle of the owner started reading every item on the menu for an uncomfortably long time. I'm a visual guy so I need to read menus at my own pace. We ordered the lunch combo - 1/2 lb. smoked brisket with 2 sides, 1 sauce, and a fountain drink are included. My wife had the 4 rib lunch with 1 side, 1 sauce, and a drink. There are 4 sauces to choose from. I chose the hot & spicy that was thin and mild; my wife chose the "Bama sauce", a white vinegar & salad dressing sauce that was good. I chose the Brussels sprouts hash and warm German potato salad that were both delicious, and my favorite menu items overall! I was surprised to see the brisket in a foil-wrapped packet next to the bun thinking that this method kept the meat hot, but when I opened the packet, the meat was not hot, but nicely smoked. The brisket was unusually cut into pellet- sized pieces that were slightly dry, under seasoned, and undercooked to my liking, and kept falling out of the bun. I would have preferred the traditional sliced brisket sandwich piled high with some topping choices like homemade pickles, hot peppers, etc. On the positive side, my wife's ribs were huge and they even threw in a few burnt ends. I tried one and thought it was also under seasoned and dry. My wife loved her ribs and said it was tender and juicy! The ambiance is quirky and uninviting with a bar behind the checkout and a few tables. There was a paper sign arrow in the back showing that they have a patio, but you have to walk through a storage area and past the restroom to get there. There were 3 or 4 picnic tables and 1 small bar-height table with 2 chairs. We didn't realize until we left that they served wine and beer until we saw a beer sign over the bar. I'm assuming this place is fairly new and they've got some kinks to work out, but if you go, I'd recommend the ribs and sides!

I have…read morebeen a dedicated customer since the place opened in 2000-2001 (?) and probably have eaten somewhere between 2-4 thousand (seriously) wings, in all of their sauces our the last decade. The main appeal for this particular Wingstop is that it is located across the street from the only semblance of so-called "nightlife" in town -- the movie theater. How the owner ever managed to convince the franchise (which is based mostly on the west coast) to open shop in the middle of nowhere Alabama is beyond my comprehension, but it has apparently paid off. Wingstop is never crowded, as most of their customers are just in long enough to pick up a phoned-in to go order. The seating is always clean, the music (though not my taste) is pleasant enough, and the kitchen is open so you can see how clean it actually is. The prices are fair and low. The original hours were 4PM-Midnight daily, however they have since changed the opening time to 11AM to cater to the lunch crowd. Moving on to the food... Wingstop offers 2 custom "freshly made" dipping sauces: Ranch, and the delectable Blue Cheese, which is in my opinion the main point that sets them leaps and bounds above any other wing restaurant as I am a huge fan of dips... Honestly, no other blue cheese tastes this way, trust me, I have tried countless in my wing escapades and no recipe found online can rival it. The great thing is that you can buy the sauce in PINT size containers, and, I shamelessly admit that I have enjoyed the container in it's entirety many, many times. Aside from the dips, Wingstop offers 9 flavors which suit any palette. They have a standard Hot, "Cajun" (which is actually just their Hot sauce with dry Cajun spice mixed in), Atomic (which is almost the consistency of Salsa made of pure pepper and it is obscenely hot) and the standard fare of Mild, Hickory Smoked BBQ, Lemon Pepper, Garlic Parmesan, Hawaiian, Teriyaki. For anyone wanting a "variety", I recommend the Cajun, Hawaiian BBQ and Lemon Pepper as those are my personal favorites. In all fairness to the rest of the wing world, Wingstop as a whole is nothing special, but they have decent sauces which all taste great and dips to die for. If for some reason you ever find yourself passing through this little backwoods town, please do yourself a favor and check out Wingstop.
