I frequent the Chiefland area at least once a year for our vacation/visits to family. This is one of the first restaurants I ever ate at in the area, and I make it a point to visit here at least once every trip. Bill's is a family-owned barbecue restaurant located on the main road in "downtown" Chiefland. It has a private parking lot, and there are multiple entrances/exits both on the main road, and the road that runs behind the building. On this day, we visited for lunch on a Monday in June around noon. There is definitely a regular lunch crowd that eats at this place, so it was lively. However, we had no problem getting a table right away. I have personally never had to wait for a table when dining here. For seating, there are primarily booths with some regular tables. When I visit, I typically get whatever the Daily Special is. These seem to stay the same week-to-week, and since this was a Monday it was the Pork Sandwich with the Salad Bar for $11.25. However, they have a large menu with various lunch specials, salads, sandwiches, and other barbeque items to choose from. There are also family packs and take-out options available. I personally love the Salad Bar here. My favorite lettuce is iceberg, and that is the base they offer. They have most of the typical toppings you would expect to find on a Salad Bar, along with some pasta/broccoli/chicken salad-type offerings. There are several different dressings, along with crackers and chips to pair with your creations. For the Pork Sandwich, you get to choose between a bun or garlic toast. I always opt for the garlic toast, as it seems many other do also. It is not pulled pork, but rather thicker slices piled on the bread. The sandwich does not come with sauce, but on the table there are three different barbeques to choose from - regular, sweet, or hot. As typical, the sandwich was great and the meat was not dry at all. Our server was kind and took great care of us during our lunch. The staff seems to get to know their customers, as it appears they recognize most patrons when they are coming in. I enjoyed this particular visit to Bill's, as I typically do. Especially with the daily and lunch specials, I believe it is a good value for quality food. It has a small town atmosphere that is comforting, making you feel right at home. I would definitely recommend giving Bill's a try if you find yourself in the area, or are looking for a new spot to try. read more

We happened to get there as the lunch crowd hit, so frankly it was slow. We just loathe large chains and try to frequent the local places when we travel. The wait staff did the best they could to deal, but were a bit overwhelmed. My Rueben was quite good. It's apparently a specialty of theirs. My wife enjoyed her ham with her two sides. Just taking a casual drive with hubby to spend the day together. He asked if I was feeling BBQ for lunch. I said sure. We popped in to Bar-B-Q Bill's. Walked in, greeted and sat right away. The hostess asked what we were drinking and gave our order. Not even a minute later the server stopped by the table and took our food order. I ordered the BBQ beef small sandwich on garlic bread with a side of coleslaw. Hubby ordered a 1/4 slab of ribs with a side of fries, baked beans and fried okra. All of the food was made to perfection. Server stopped by several times to make sure everything was good and if we needed anything. All staff had smiles on their face. Not a frown to be seen. I didn't order this time the salad bar but boy did it ever look so stocked and delicious. This place is open 7 days a week and all tables were full. Though we had to change our seat (for some reason, the waitress seated us in the back of the restaurant when there were quite a few seats available closer). In any case, our waitress was very pleasant, and quite patient as this was our first visit. We had a hard time figuring out what we wanted to order! In the end, I ordered the grilled shrimp with fried okra, lima beans, and a sweet potato. My friend ordered chicken, fried okra, baked beans, and fries. I was expecting the shreddy kind of meat smothered in sauce. What they served was a pile of sliced, light meat pork on a toasted bun, piping hot, with sweet BBQ sauce on the side. (They had other sauce options, I chose the sweet.) I looked at the sliced pork and thought it would be the dry, tough kind of sliced pork, but it was the most tender, juicy, delicious pork I ever tasted! My son said his krabby cake tasted like it was all bread. My plate, the fries were lava hot and good. The roast beef was ice cold, and the chicken was cold and looked like ham. The chicken was Luke warm and still quite undercooked. The ribs had a super hard jerky-like bark and tender that was a bit better. Well we have been stopping there almost everyday time we pass thru. So I feel like we were put in far left corner booth and were forgotten about. When we needed something had to ask for our waitress. Drove an hour out of Perry, Florida to stop and grab a takeout order here for the family. Not worth it, meat was just tough and flavorless and the mild sauce was MID at best. Also ordered a side of fried pickles and for that price the portions don't seem to add up, the pickles I got were cold and the ranch was somehow warm? Pickles were also flavorless even though it looked like the breading was seasoned also? Just got a bad order or something I guess, and that's order we got after calling an hour ahead of time. The service is great. No complaints. Great staff. The food... Well, not so great. The bbq is fine (not great but ok) but how can you mess up bbq beans? Well, they did. They were mush and resembled Mexican refried beans. I'm guessing they are using canned bbq beans and constantly have them heated so they turn into a mush. The waitress recommended the banana cream pie for dessert, so we tried it. It was a slice of store bought industrially produced pie -- not even a good grocery store pie. We decided to go to BBQ Bill's in Chiefland, today after church. We had to wait approximately 10 minutes for a seat, which is unusual. Dawn and I both had the salad bar, and split a 1/2 smoked chicken. The salad bar is pretty well stocked and there is normally a decent variety of veggies and fixings. It appears everyone wanted the salad bar today and it was getting hit hard. Everything was fresh and the staff stayed busy trying to keep it clean and maintained. Our chicken was pretty good, well cooked,nice smokey flavor and moist. I think for possibly the second time ever in several visits, the waitress kept our glasses full of our favorite beverage. We eat here about two to three times a week, the breakfast is really good and averages about 10$ per person. They have lunch and dinner specials every day, it's a casual BBQ restaurant with a country feel. The service is always top notch and very responsive. We've been there several times and each time it gets worse. The waiter took our food order but never asked us about drinks. As he was walking away, we mentioned he hadn't taken our drink order. We both ordered the salad bar. Waiter also forgot to bring the salad plates so we asked another waitress who was walking since our waiter was no where around. She never said a word, just walked away. She can back with two plates which she put down on our table very loudly. All I wanted to do at this point was to leave. We had the pleasure of eating at this restaurant several times about 15 to 20 years ago and happened to be driving through the area tonight and we were pleased to find out it was still open. It was as good as we remembered and then some! The food was absolutely delicious. We had bbq chicken and charbroiled chicken. Both were very moist and flavorful. The corn nuggets are not to be missed. (Had that as an appetizer). Our server, Janine, gave service with a smile and had such a friendly attitude. We greatly enjoyed talking with her! Stopped for lunch traveling through. Got there right before the Mother's Day rush. I opted for salad bar with the small pork sandwich. Hubby had the large pork sandwich. The salad bar was good. Would have like mixed greens but there were lots of extras to add. I'm not a sliced pork fan and it wasn't stellar. Hubby does like sliced pork and he liked his. But there wasn't much difference in portions between the small and large serving. Bbq sauce was just ok, we tried all of them. The ice tea was good! We were camping so we looked for a local spot to have a n early dinner, this place was advertised as being great home style food with a large salad bar. With us being a mixed couple (vegetarian and not) it sounded like we could both be happy. Wrong! My husband had one of their Bbq dinners, everything was lukewarm. Huge bags of shredded lettuce (I saw them restock it) phony eggs that were just a huge clump in the container ( I don't eat them but I saw another person struggling to get some on their salad) then your typical stuff, peas, black olives, onions, mushrooms, macaroni salad, coleslaw, pickled beets, corn, something that looked like pudding??? , green peppers... everything was pretty bland and the dressings that were offered were the thick French, thousand island, blue cheese without any chunks and something else that I couldn't identify. Not really BBQ. No brisket, no smoked meat. My husband and I smoke meat on our Big Green Egg all the time and if you know what smoked BBQ is you're not going to get smoked BBQ here. All of our food was just over room temperature so trying to evaluate food that is not at a decent temperature is an exercise in frustration but it seemed OK.
