I don't know how to exactly describe it but their broth tastes "cleaner" than other nearby pho restaurants, and that is the reason that I've continued to come back whenever I'm in the "pho mood"! My mom felt like the Banh Mi sandwich was lacking the actual ingredients and was mostly bread. But she said it still tasted good. A couple of other people I've brought have also pointed out that their portions are a bit smaller than what they'd like. I came in at lunch time, the place was nearly empty, and ordered shrimp spring rolls and an iced tea (only have green). Spring rolls and tea arrived promptly and were good. Not special, just good. The bathroom has false signage on it saying it's "out of order". I opened the door and used the sink to wash my hands. No sign of a broken toilet, and I had watched an employee just come out of there; the toilet was refilling correctly. Bathroom was not terribly clean; very disappointing to see the false signage. When finished with my meal, I asked for a refill of tea. The waiter bluntly refused a refill. Wishing I hadn't already tipped 20%. I came to Banh Mi & U on a whim looking for dinner. Upon walking in, the store was mostly empty, yet it still took a while before someone walked up to the register to greet me. Fortunately, the service improved significantly after I had placed my order. I had the meatball pho, which was absolutely delicious. Most pho places have soup broth that tastes eerily similar. Wow! I am impressed! Fist off, the restaurant is clean, I loved the interior. Service was great, we were checked on a few times. Now the food, we got an order of spring rolls with shrimp and the combination bang mi. Spring rolls were good, I enjoyed the dipping sauce. The banh mi though, the best I have ever had! What made it stand out was the bread! It was so soft, but yet crunchy! It does not cut the roof of your mouth which is a bonus! Stopped by to pick up some banh mi for a next day hike. The store was super clean and had new interior. The banh mi was filled really well with protein and still tasted really good the next day on our hike. I was pretty full off one sandwich too. The viet coffee was also really good and strong- not too sweet. Not sure about the other food items, but the banh mi's were pretty solid and worth the price. Finally a banh mi sandwich spot close to work and in the DTC!!! It's not the best banh mi in town but I'll absolutely take it and still was really really good in my opinion. Couldn't give them a 5 star but the fact they opened where they did and I've definitely had worse banh mi's in the area, it's pretty close for me personally. Nice bread, crusty crispy exterior and still super soft inside. Definitely made in house. Meat was good but I meant to get the other grilled pork option and probably would've like it more but the pork sausage wasn't bad. Few more slices and the ratio would be great. As others mentioned, heavy handed on the veggies for sure BUT, at least they are cold, crisp and fresh so I wasn't too upset. Touch more meat and less veggies would've helped balance the ratios out. Overall I did really enjoy the sandwich and will absolutely be back again for another Banh mi or even other things on the menu to try them out. I've also had the garlic noodles and they are very garlicky, which I love! Lastly, I've had the avocado smoothie which was good but very different. The inside is cute and has a clean look. Banh mi was alright. Everything was too sweet, like bread, sauce, and ingredients. Needed to add soy sauce to make it taste more balanced. TONS of pickled carrot/daikon, which I personally love, but that's just me. Like they put 5x more pickled carrot/daikon compared to other places. Jalapeños were devoid of heat, unfortunately. They ask you if you want toasted or not. Confusing. So we got both. Toasted was the way to go. Toasted makes it more like just regular good banh mi bread at other places. Bread still too sweet though, as I mentioned earlier. Egg rolls were way too expensive for what you get. Seemed pretty fresh though. Didn't use the type of egg roll skin we prefer though. I like rice paper wrapper for vietnamese egg rolls. These were not rice paper wrappers. New place, so friendly and clean. We'll see how it holds up over the next few months. Always like to check out a banh mi place as my favorite closed. The place was clean and pretty neat. The food prices are a bit high. I had a lemongrass grilled pork banh mi. The bread was good and over all the flavor of the banh mi was good. The service was a little slow to get my order done. We ordered togo, and the gentleman behind the counter was very polite and patient as he described the different desserts to me. As a Vietnamese-American, my reviews are based on my familiarity and exposure to Vietnamese cuisine since birth. Here are my thoughts on what we ordered. Banh mi dac biet (combo) sandwich: fully stuffed with a good ratio of meats and veg. (4 stars....I still prefer Lee's Sandwich special combo) Banh mi thit nuong (grilled pork) sandwich: fully stuffed and flavorful! Def can taste the lemongrass (3 stars...sandwich was too oily) Pandan waffle: (3 stars....not enough pandan flavor but texture was spot on) Che 3 mau (3 color dessert): refreshing but the mung bean disappeared as the ice melted and the flavors weren't as prominent (3 stars) Che suong sao hat e (grass jelly and basil seed dessert): brought back childhood memories of eating "eyeballs" (basil seeds have a similar texture to chia seeds). This one tasted much better and had more flavor. (4 stars) Overall, I enjoyed their banh mi and dessert selections. My favorite type of banh mi is the pork loaf, ever since my mom used to buy it for me when I was little, but it's hard to find, even if restaurants that specialize in banh mi, unless you're close to a concentrated area where Vietnamese/Asian businesses are. Here in Denver, it's usually off of Federal. I had been waiting for a place nearby that had this pork loaf and I finally found one. The sandwich was how I remembered it and it was a good size and quite filling. They were professional and courteous, although my two sandwiches took a little longer to make than I had anticipated. The ambience is clean and I like that they actually play Vietnamese music in there. I'll definitely be back for my favorite sandwich, but I also want to try the rice and noodle bowls. By the way, I'm going to echo what another reviewer said about the pickled carrot/daikon veggies.. maybe pull back on the amount by about 5-10% so that we can taste the meat a little better. read more
