I have had Bangalore Express when it first opened up but the quality and taste has changed. I did order take out and it was incorrect. They gave me a different type of dosa. I had to drive back to get my correct order. While the manager was nice to get it replaced he said I could not eat at his restaurant since it was takeout. First time eating here and everything was a pleasant surprise! The food was very fresh which I appreciate and also very delicious. The mango lassi was some of the best I've ever tried, and it wasn't crazy sweet like others I've had at other establishments. The owner was super friendly, helpful, and respectful. He recommended me the perfect dosa. The environment was clean and very well maintained, almost like the tables were brand new. Every time I come to New Jersey from Chicago to visit my boyfriend's family, they take me to Bangalore Express because we all love it so much. The food is excellent (I love the chaat myself), but I've also enjoyed the masala dosa, idli, vada and chai. I want to try everything on the menu every time I'm there! Decided to order some takeout from here. We switched it up this time around and ordered the chole bhatura. The Chole Bhatura was amazing. We ordered two for a group of 3 and it was plenty for all of us. The Bhatura was huge and declious. The chole had an excellent taste and wasn't too spicy or too mild. My wife enjoys chaats from here, but anything else I have ever tasted is average or below. So why then is the 4 * rating? Pretty basic Indian fast food shop. No atmosphere to speak of, other than the cute old man who serves the food and does the set up when you sit down. Speaks no English, but has a winning smile. Everything is plastic from water glass to serving plates. Hope they recycle. My Samosa Chaat was pretty good, with two stuffed Sammies deconstructed and drowned with Chaat fixings that were both curry hot and mildly sweet spicy. It was a bit soupier than I expected, but that did not detract from the taste. Prices were very reasonable. This is not the place to go to impress anyone, unless your proud of finding cheapskate lunch places. This place does not serve fresh food. Idly and vada were warmed and served. Chutneys were but sticky, sour and straight from refrigerator. I simply asked if they used microwave to warm the food as the Vada and Idly both were hot from inside and cold outside. The owner started making fun of it and more so upon providing feedback the owner started attacking back saying "do you think all other restaurants are serving fresh food?" When I stated I am going to put google review, owner started threatening " I will see you there".. Not sure what does that mean though, Started abusing with words like get out and never come back, you guys always come to get free food (I had first bite, provided feedback as the discussion was going in wrong direction, simply left the food and didn't even ask for cash back) . It was the worst ever experience, I wish instead of absolute rude behavior and arrogance showed , they would have rather focused on improving food quality. For sure not going back to such place. EXTREMELY rude customer service never had this happen to me in my life. When calling the restaurant, a woman picked up and we told her to make our papdi chaat good as we were not satisfied with it last time we ordered. She became very aggressive at this comment and when we called back she kept hanging up on us. She literally yelled at us for calling back and told us "to not waste our time". She should be fired for her behavior. We have been loyal customers for YEARS and never experienced this kind of behavior anywhere. She was extremely rude and we talked to her in a calm manner while she kept yelling at us. Bangalore express is a great place to get the best of both north and South Indian tastes. The idlis and vadas with the sambhar and chutneys are always fresh and never dry. The chaats are tangy and sweet and spicy! Personally i like the aloo papri chaat the most but all of them are pretty good! The masala dosa is always a huge portion and the sambhar has a decent spicy kick! But my favorite item on the menu is the chole bhature. The bhaturas are always freshly made and huge in size. They are soft and fluffy and easy to eat and dip into the chole. The chole are always very well cooked and seasoned to perfection! This little place makes some wonderful Indian food. The Chole Bhatura and Dosas are awesome. They have so many vegetarian friendly options. They've been around for awhile and you can't beat their food for the price, especially the Chole Bhatura and Dosa. Portions are reasonable for the price. The family that runs the place are very kind. A small, family-run place that makes the best sambar I've been able to find on the East or West Coast so far. Order extra with your dosa. It's that good. My favorites here are the spinach and cheese masala dosa, chole bhature and samosa chaat. They have entrees like palak paneer and such, but I love the flavorful, filling comfort-food dosas too much to stray around on the menu. Great for takeout, but dosas taste best eaten hot and fresh. I didn't order enough to completely judge their indian food, but I thought their Lentil Bonda was well made and their Mango Lassi was great as well (although I was disappointed it came in the tiniest cup!) When we came in, there's an elderly gentleman who greeted us profusely and made sure all of us got the menu, the drinks and refills, which I thought is a nice familial touch. Loved the rasa vada, and the dosas are very crispy but not dry, and very tasty especially when combined with the equally good sambar. Also tried the alu tikki chaat and I think it's pretty good. The portions are very generous and you will get a lot for your money as the platters come with biryani as a side option (I end up splitting this with my sister often). However, the food was really good. At any South Indian place, I use the Sambhar (the lentil gravy) as my yardstick to judge how well they cook other stuff. (DISCLAIMER: I'm not a South Indian, so I'm sure South Indians will be quick to comment on my yardstick....but oh well..that's what they have disclaimers for). The sambhar here was fantastic. It was better than any South Indian places I've been to in NJ. Added to that, the Idlys were quite soft and the dosa had just the right ratio of crisp:chew that made this a memorable place. This is next to the KFC which always confuses us in Beekman Plaza (it's spelled out as kentucky fried chicken on the marquee in plain, non-KFC lettering, and we have a tendency to think, Oh! Real Southern Chicken! Wait, it's KFC). We thought of eating here last night, went inside, but it was one of those brightly lit take-away type places with a few tables and menu pre-printed with photos above the counter. Basically, a take away lunch place with formica tables and a glass front without shades. We may order take away from here sometime, but decided that it wasn't a sit-down dinner type place, and instead discovered Abhiruchi, which has since become our favourite Indian place. read more
