This place is a true gem with fantastic local food. Run by just two people, a man and a woman, the…read moresmall restaurant serves Indian and Portuguese home-styled cooking for very reasonable prices. Indian dishes include curries and biryanis, while Portuguese dishes include grilled fish (sardines, bacalhau, sea bass, salmon, etc.). We ordered a soup as a starter--it was the typical Portuguese soup of pureed potato with green vegetables and onion. The ciabatta-like bread was great (cost 30 cents each; bread is often not free). The grilled sea bass and salmon (8.50 each) were sublime! So, so tender and fresh. Each plate came with rice and salad, and boiled potato. And the grilled sea bass was an entire fish. Both were winners. After the meal, we got complimentary shots of ginjinha (fermented cherry in brandy with sugar, cinnamon, and water) and port. The duo were both so sweet and friendly. There are only eight tables (fewer if put together for larger parties). And since there are only two people running the show, service was very, very slow. The patience is worth the experience. Great for vegetarians and vegans!

Today we went to #2 Lisbon restaurant on Trip Advisor , Mili!…read moreGPS took us on 7 minutes walk from the hotel, via abandoned staircase with graffiti on it, few hundreds pigeons seem not been disturbed forever and slightly used condom in good condition on the step. Normally, in USA I'd turn back, but in Lisbon the chances of being robbed or raped in the bright Sun light are slim, so we went on . Menu on the door was not impressive, but we ventured inside, despite less than the Spartan decor. #2 restaurant in Lisbon, we must try! My baked cod fish wasn't bad, Angelina Dembo grilled bass was tasteless, the salad bland, the free wines I didn't finish and when the chef asked me about the food, I told him the truth. When I grill fish, local dogs come from 2 miles radius and beg for piece, his fish is not anywhere near. Not enough salt, no spice, no oil to make skin crispy, total disappointment. This is not 2, not 20, not 200, and I am not even sure if this one is bad enough to be #2000 in Lisbon.

We had a great experience at Swaagat, especially given that we were a large group of 19 people. The…read morerestaurant was very accommodating, and the host and staff were super pleasant, welcoming, and engaging throughout our visit. We started with paneer tikka and chicken tikka--both came in generous portions and were freshly made. The chutneys paired really well and added to the overall flavor. We also had a bottle of Piano red wine, which surprisingly worked quite nicely with the food. For the main course, everything was delicious. Standouts for us were the butter chicken, palak paneer, biryani, prawn curry, and garlic naan. The food tasted very fresh and well prepared, and you could tell care went into each dish. Service was fast despite the size of our group, which we really appreciated. Most importantly, everyone had a good time--especially the kids. Overall, a very enjoyable meal with great food and warm hospitality. Would definitely recommend for both small and large groups!

I had the meat and seafood thali, both were good, but I definitely preferred the meat one. Chai isn't on the menu, but they said it we'd available when I asked. The chai was also quite good and in a really cute pot. One thing that could have made it better though is if the pot had better insulation, the tea got cold really quick.

We ate at Calcuta on Rua do Norte most recently in September, 2018. This was our 3rd visit, after…read moreeating there twice during a trip to Lisbon in 2016. My wife was really looking forward to returning here in 2018 but we were disappointed. Nothing was bad. It was just mediocre. It wasn't as good as our visits in 2016. We arrived just after they opened for dinner at 6PM. Although we were the only people in the restaurant, we weren't allowed to sit in their one window seat because they keep that open for a writer who frequents the place. We also weren't able to get any naan bread because they didn't pre-heat the oven and said it would take 30-45 minutes after opening for it to be ready. The Papari Masali (papadums) were decent, as were the Chamuças de Frango (samosas). An order of jirra rice is definitely enough for 2. My wife had a spicy chicken curry dish that isn't on the menu on the web site. I had a Seekh kabab, a grilled minced lamb kabab. It was good, but overcooked. The total price was 36 Euros, including beers, which I have nothing to complain about. All in all, it was, as I said before, mediocre. The server and staff were friendly as always. We will probably return for a late night curry after a night of Bairro Alto drinking, but there are other Indian restaurants in Lisboa that have been recommended by an Indian friend that we will likely pursue for a planned dinner next visit.
