I've eaten a lot of Thai curries in my life and the ones I've had here are some of the best I've had. I've tried both the green and the yellow curries and they are so flavorful and everything is cooked to perfection. I definitely recommend getting the coconut rice to pair with the curry. I had been driving along 100 ave to commute more often these days, and began to notice that there is a thai restaurant just quietly blending into a plain looking mini strip mall (You can only really see it driving eastbound). Something in me has been craving some authentic thai and also something undiscovered, nice and close to home. I also like home style family run spots which are few and far it seems these days. But it came to my awareness so elusively and in such a subtle manner, I might have missed it if were not for my cravings for decent/good/great eats. With my family of two adults + 1 visiting adult child and three under five year olds coming home from a day at the park, I wanted to treat them to a rare meal out. It took a while, but I recalled Bangkok Kitchen and convinced them it would be good to try. I was taking the chance feeding the family would destroy my budget for the rest of the long weekend... I definitely was right about it being a rewarding adventure, and despite my second thoughts about posting this and potentially letting masses crowd over this little gem of a spot, I feel the need to compliment Bangkok Kitchen and express my joy of having such a great establishment in my community (Jasper Place). Besides, I am certain few read my reviews. About Bangkok Kitchen already! Thai cuisine is fresh, sweet and spicy. Very spicy. While there are non spicy options, it is general knowledge that the real Thai flavours embrace heat. Thankfully, the service was top standard and obviously well trained in spotting potential bad experiences. Our server always gave full disclosure of the spice/heat levels and gave options for us to have less heat (no spice, medium, regular-spicy... I'm sure there is grades above but did not go there). Additionally, with a dairy allergy and nut allergy in our group, there was some specifics which the server dutifully made accommodations for and conferred with the kitchen about before finalizing. Still, with two preschool aged kids, we found some terrific no heat options (mango salad, coconut shrimp, green curry, rice, calamari) and some amazing fragrant more spicy ones (tom yum fried rice, papaya salad) for the adult adventurers. The food was terrific and everyone was happy with the choices made. (I will disclose that I had been dragged to several well regarded if not top thai spots in my time, and so I know the standards fairly well) This is homestyle authentic cooking with soul. If you are looking for or are expecting high end hotel/Michelin star stuff, you might not be elated. But once seated in the lovely yet tiny restaurant, you will experience a humble and gracious Thai kitchen gastronomic masterpiece. I really love the menu layout and reading the story of the restauranteur on the front page was an added touch which added to my confidence in the choice we made to patron this really amazing restaurant. It was reinstated, when, as we were leaving, I saw the lovely face of the founder/chef who came out to greet us with the nicest smile I have seen in a very long while in the food business. Ordered takeout through Skip. We had the Pad Thai and Chicken Green Curry. The Pad Thai we weren't too impressed with. Was mostly just noodles with a little egg. By far the skimpiest Pad Thai I've ever had but at least it was hot the flavour wasn't all that bad. Especially, once it's mixed in with the Green Curry sauce. That dish was flavourful and delicious. Wouldn't recommend the Pad Thai...way overpriced for what you get ($16). The Chicken Green Curry is a bit pricey too ($17.50) but was delicious so definitely recommend it. read more

This place is a step above a food court. Recently got takeout and while the staff was polite and friendly, the food was unfortunately very underwhelming. Ordered two basic, but very different noodle dishes and after arriving home, we realized they had exactly the same sauce and everything, with the exception of a few veggies and different types of noodles that ended up all stuck together and flavorless. Not at all worth the $35 spent. This place used to be good, but apparently switched ownership recently. Hopefully they're able to get it together. Until then, it's a hard pass. read more

I'm not sure if this place is still owned by the folks who owned Ban Thai or not, but we decided to take the chance that it wasn't. Whoops..this place is a disaster. Walking in the space is pretty typical Thai, wicker and glass tables with lots of generic Thailand posters about. We get seated and away we go. Luke warm tap water was the first impression. No ice, no chill and dirty glasses. Rough. The Singha was cold so that was a plus I guess...the menu is massive. Like an inch thick with all kinds of fairly typical Thai options which was fine that's why we were there. I ordered the "Thai" calamari with ginger tamarind sauce. Sounded absolutely delicious. What I got was Costco frozen squid rings with chilli sauce you could buy at Safeway. Absolutely pathetic. The GF got some Tom Yum Soup which she actually liked. I tried it and thought it was an equally disastrous dish, but we'll give a point or two for her happiness for sure. The next dish absolutely boggles the mind. I ordered an extra spicy drunken noodle. I've had drunken noodles many many times before. Usually what you get is rice noodles with a protein and a bunch of veggies, a decent Thai option. Now, the menu said "spaghetti noodles" which I automatically assumed was a bit of a translation issue...rice noodles are the norm but thought maybe I was gonna be in store for some chow mein type noodles... Nope straight up Italian spaghetti noodles...in a Thai dish...in a Thai restaurant. So unless the chef's name is Luigi that is an absolute disgrace to the cuisine. By far the most ridiculous dish I've even seen in any restaurant anywhere in my life. It was literally over cooked spaghetti noodles in a lame Thai sauce with veggies. Spice level was nice but damn. I felt the angst of our lovely server as she put this monstrosity on the table. Brutal! I hate handing out 1's to places but this place is so close I'm still pondering swiping left as you read this..I can only hope the owners of this place read this and make a change or 60. It's so unbelievably bad food I can't even...the 2 star is based solely on my lady's soup and our lovely server. Oh almost forgot...whilst waiting for our food, there was a microwave directly behind us that was used no less than half a dozen times. I mean how much sense does it take to not have the microwave in ear shot of the only people in your restaurant? Just crazy flaws all over the place. Do yourself a giant favour and never eat here. In my opinion, this is the best Thai restaurant in the city, bar none. The restaurant is very small, it has maybe 10 tables in total, and I really like that because it's always quiet and more intimate, perfect for a date night. The food here is truly incredible, my absolute favourites are the Pad Thai with shrimp, and the Matsaman curry with coconut rice. I prefer a little bit of spice, but they will ask you how spicy you like it. I've eaten here many times and never once been disappointed by anything on the menu. They also are setup to do delivery, which is always convenient! The average price for a dish is around $17.00 but the quality of food is definitely worth the price. Our tummy - as u guessed it - well satisfied and nicely rounded. :) Just a note on the side: Be sure to bring on a massive dose of patience and sense of consideration as you'll need it. The main server is an elderly gentleman who is also the owner of the restaurant. You would be expected to hold on to that menu for 10-15 minutes before he comes around (depending on the number of covers) to take your order followed by serving up your drinks. I had a lovely lunch at Bangkok Kitchen with a good friend on March 2, 2022. Bangkok Kitchen is cozy and clean the server is friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We ordered the Yellow Curry with chicken ( $15 ), Pad Thai with Shrimp( $18 ), and two types of rice, sweet and white. The portions are generous and provide leftovers for home. Dishes are flavorful without being overpowered with curry and arrive at the table fast and hot. The prices are fair and the quality of food very good. Appetizers range in price between $6 and $10. Soups and salads, between $9 and $15. Curry dishes between $14 and $19. Stir-fried dishes between $15 and $20. I will recommend Bangkok Kitchen to anyone who enjoys Thai cuisine. read more

Ban Thai. Holy jeebus, I'm pretty sure I've passed this little Thai restaurant more times than I care to count. I've always noticed the sign driving by but stopping for a bite to eat never crossed my mind until now. I guess it's because when you live in the area, you take things for granted. That or you just stay at home to cook. At least that's my train of thought. A buddy and I decided to check Ban Thai out on a Tuesday evening. We arrived at 6:30pm and the place was pretty empty. There were two other groups of five that came later while we were eating but for the most part, it wasn't too busy. That's probably good because our server, leaning towards the ancient side of things (but super nice), was a tad on the slow side. No biggie though as the slow pace goes with the relaxed vibe and interesting, eclectic décor. The walls are plastered with Thai paintings and man, the menus sure are old. Speaking of the menus, they had a couple "suggested combinations" but I'm not sure why you'd order that when you can go a la carte style and the price comes out pretty much equal. Combos are supposed to be deals no?!?! They probably should take a page out of Million Thai's playbook. - Po Taek (#12) ($10.00) - spicy sour mixed seafood soup with tomatoes and mushrooms. The lemongrass was prominent and gave it a nice sourness to the broth. I didn't find it too spicy but there was some heat to it. Couple pieces of shrimp, squid and mussels were mixed in. Great way to start our meal. - Gaeng kiew waan (#54) ($12.50) - creamy, green coconut curry with fresh basil, red and green peppers, snow peas and for meat, we picked chicken. We were both surprised by how dark the green curry looked like when it came out. It also had an interesting aroma - smelled something along the lines of mild coffee? Maybe we were losing our minds. Or it was the lighting. Definitely blame the lighting. It didn't matter though because the green curry was spot on. Rich and creamy in a subtle way. - Kao mun (#27) ($4.00) - Thai rice steamed in coconut milk, aka. coconut rice. It says serves 2-3 people, but it's more to 2 people. We probably could have ordered another bowl, as we ran out of rice to finish off the green curry. It was good though, fluffy and the coconut came through loud and clear. - Padt Thai (#33) ($15.00) - the padt thai is their house specialty (according to the menu). Thin rice noodles fried soft with minced pork, baby shrimp, tofu, chives, egg, bean sprouts and topped with crushed roasted peanuts. We were impressed by how generous the portion was. It's always a struggle finding a place that does this dish justice but they had the perfect balance of sweetness in their sauce. Ban Thai is a sweet, sort-of-not-really hidden gem on the west end. Nice to see there are a few, emphasis on few, good spot on the West end for some good eats! Another Thai place in town to add to the list. I'll be back to try a few more things now that I know they do the basics well. read more

I am far from an expert in Thai food, but I do know fresh, quality food and boy o boy this was fresh. Every vegetable was crisp and flavourful. The beef and the shrimp were beautiful. I am not a fan of shrimp, but my date is, and so we shared a dish of Drunken Shrimp. All I can really say, is that the shrimp must never sober up...they were fantastic! We also had the sweet green curry beef. I'm a pretty good judge of curry, and this was in the top two or three curries I've had. Fabulous flavour. The service was incredible. We were treated like long lost family. We still had some curry left, but had eaten all the rice, Gail brought us more rice in the house to finish with the curry and when my date didn't like the wine she had chosen; a free drink was set in the table with the server saying, "We want you to enjoy, so this one is on the house." That's never happened to me anywhere before. If you like Thai, if you like good service in an inviting atmosphere, and you don't mind paying for quality, then please make this your next Thai experience. You won't regret it! read more

My gf and I went for Valentines dinner and left after sitting for 15 minutes with the one server not bringing us a menu or even some water. There were only 3 other couples in the restaurant so there was absolutely no reason to not attend to us within a reasonable amount of time. The management change was for the worse it seems. I was skeptical at first when I was taken there on a first date several years ago, but I still continue to be impressed by the Ban Thai Restaurant. It is classy, quiet, delicious and authentic. I can see how the storefront may make someone think twice, but it deserves more than a chance. Its lovely. The inside being outdated just adds to the charm and the wonderful smell of their coconut rice. My favourite dish. EVERY dish on the menu so far has been amazing. SO here is the deal with the incomparable Ban Thai. Services is slow and while friendly it is strange that food does seem to appear at random times. It is for this reason it is not getting 5 stars ;) Well that is my only flaw in reality. The food is incredible. Savoury satays, amazing soups, deliciousness at every turn! So who cares that they spread out the taste sensations over a period of time. All the more ability to savour each dish in a nonchalant pace. I really do feel this is one of the best Thai places around and it is a reason they have been around for so long. A quaint small room so not for big parties but certainly great for a smaller intimate setting or a special treat for a birthday or anniversary. Prepare to spend some time and take it all in. Like many other reviews have said, the service is really slow. I think the owner, who is quite old, does everything. So if you plan to come here, don't be in a rush! However, the food is delicious!!! I brought my whole family here and every single person enjoyed every single dish. The Tom yum is to die for. The place looks old and worn but the food is totally worth it. My 86 year old grandma still asks if we can eat there again! If you're in a rush, just order for take out. But you will not regret getting the food! read more

Will NOT be going back. This place was just odd. One guy and his wife do everything. We got there at 7pm with plans to go to an 8:30pm movie. He took forever to take our order, the appetizer (curry puffs) took about 20 min. The Thai iced coffees we ordered which I've had elsewhere usually come with a cup of hot water dripping through a little filter into a cup, and they give you a glass with ice and condensed milk to pour it over when it's done dripping - these just came over ice and he brought them right away which tells me they came out of a can. Not impressed considering I can buy that at the market for about $1 and he charged us $4 each for it. The curry puffs were just okay. Small for what you pay - you get four tiny puffs for $7. Came with a little salad with some sort of sweet chilli dressing. Then we waited - and waited - and waited. There was only one other table with two ladies and they had all their food. I watched as he brought out their dishes one by one. Seems the wife is the chef and she only cooks one dish at a time. It was about 8pm by the time our first main dish arrived - a stewed beef curry and our coconut rice. I'm guessing the beef had been stewing all day - it was very tender and tasty but if that was the case why did it take an hour to get to our table. Our second dish, Pad Thai, didn't arrive with it. We were done eating the first one and it was now 8:10 and we watched as a take out order was filled. We asked how long for our other dish he assured us it was coming right now. Then he yelled something to her in the kitchen in Thai " blah blah blah Pad Thai" and I took a guess that he was just then telling her to just start our other dish - we asked and sure enough it was the case. We cancelled it and then tried to pay. The take out guy was paying and the owner was painfully slow with the debit machine, then it failed and they had to start over. We just asked how much was our bill - threw some cash at him to cover it (and nothing more) and left. It was 8:15pm - 75 min for one appetizer and one dish and the 2nd not even in sight. To top it all off the same music (as in song - Canon in D classical) played over and over the entire time! As I said - we will not be back. I don't think he even has a clue that their service is so bad. He barely said two words to us the entire time we were there - we had to call him over. He was always in the kitchen doing god knows what. I hate to give a bad review to a small mom/pop place but this was bad, really bad. It's sad because the food was good - they've been around a long time, maybe too long and they're just tired. That's what it seems like. read more

Reservations were made for a party of 12 on new years eve at 7pm. The place was dim just the way I like it. Half of us were on time so we decided to order appetizers because we were so hungry. Half an hour later the food arrived along with the other half of the party. That alone made things slightly messy. Try feeding 12 with orders just enough for 6, I didn't think so! Then it was more than an half hour for the main considering the dishes are meant to be shared and not individual. Honestly we were just so hungry we don't remember all the dishes as few were bland BUT! I remember the red curry and how peanuty it tasted with the coconut rice. We ended up leaving around 10. The food was great, and although more Laotian than Thai, the Larb salad was the best I've had anywhere, including those two aforementioned countries. This is probably one of the better Thai restaurant in Edmonton. An authentic Thai restaurant with flavors brought to you from Thailand. You can tell that this restaurant have been around for 20 years by the dishes and how the restaurant looks like inside. It was built in the 1990s by looking at the decor. The owners, Supanee, (Thai wife) is the chef and the husband, Allan, is mainly the server. Allan comes off as a very humble and kind man. He's a little slow when it comes to serving us, we just have to be more patient. Also the food is prepared very slowly, because it's made from scratch. It's good to go on a weekday when it's not so busy. They do have more servers on the weekend. We ordered the toam yum gung soup for 6 people. They kept it under a burner to keep it warm. This soup is very spicy, but at the same time also very tasty. There was lots of veggies, shrimp and spices in this soup. The rice bowl was a good portion and the rice wasn't too sticky. We had two kinds of salads. One was a seafood salad, Yam Talay. I didn't really like it, because it had a lot of white onions and I really don't like eating raw white onions! The other one was a beef salad, Yam Nua. The scalded beef was really good. I thought they gave use too much lettuce for this dish. We obviously had to order the famous Pad Thai dish. I enjoyed the crunchiness of this dish. Rumors has it that this is the best Pad Thai dish in Edmonton! I totally agree. The plaa radt prigk dish is a crispy fried fish served with spicy sweet sauce. It was very favorable and it left an awesome impression on my tongue! We tried the panang which is a dish cooked with peanut sauce. It's mild spicy and the sauce is heavily coated into the meat. This dish goes great with my jasmine rice. Each dish was made with so many unique spices and it was intriguing trying to differentiate them all. I've also notice that the tables and chairs are handmade rattan wood. They played Thai classical, have figurines and art pieces from Thailand so the customers can learn and embrace the culture. The winter roads made sure that every single restaurant was empty on this Sunday night but the birthday dinner must go on. Decor was typical of cheesy Thai restaurant with tourism posters on the wall and a mishmash of gold and wood everywhere. We sat down at the uncomfortable table and didn't waste much time with the menu because we knew what we wanted. Everything. The waitress/server was neutral, business-like but not exactly friendly - like Switzerland. Pawpia Sowdt - a Thai analogue of Vietnamese Salad rolls. Shrimp and chicken rolls that were tasty but were held back by a cloyingly sweet sauce. Tom Yung Gung - A punch in the face of flavor. Savory, salty, and sour, this soup was exactly what I needed and lingered even longer with the aromatics. It came with a good number of shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, and a mountain of ginger and lemongrass. Definitely the star of the show. (Not burning myself on the flame was the highlight of the evening.) Pad Thai - This was good Pad Thai. Padt King - More ginger but this time in the form of a beef stir fry. Lots of vegetables, fungi, and bitter things. I really enjoyed this as leftovers and would've enjoyed it more if they hadn't been so spartan with the meat. Gaeng Paedt - I love curry, I love bamboo shoots, and I love chicken. I did not love this. It wasn't horrible but it tasted like smoke and overpowered everything it touched. I went without dessert since I tend to overeat entrees. Anyways, the meal was definitely a solid outing. I felt everything tasted as good as it should except for the Gaeng Paedt. Went to Ban Thai last night for dinner and was not disappointed. It's located in a non-descript little plaza (has free parking); inside, it's very cosy though with kind of cheesy decor. It wasn't too busy we arrived but a few other tables filled up as we were eating. We were 4 people and so we ordered a bunch of dishes to share, because I'd heard that that was the way to do it when eating here (similar to Boualuoang). They do have set menu combos for 4-6 people, but we wanted to choose our own dishes so we just ordered à la carte. The food actually arrived quite quickly - we were in and out of the restaurant in an hour. For starters we ordered two kinds of soups. You can order the soups for 2, 4, or 6 people. We had a traditional spicy tom yum soup, and another one with coconut milk with chicken. The tom yum soup had an awesome fiery kick to it, lots of button mushroom quarters, large chunks of sweet tomatoes (wish they were a little smaller), lemongrass, chopped cilantro&green onions, and these large, succulent shrimp. They were oh so tasty and perfectly cooked - resilient and not mushy at all. Yum. The coconut milk soup was also delicious. It was sweet but sour at the same time. Lots of chicken breast bits, mushrooms, tomatoes, kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass. For mains, we ordered one thing of jasmine rice (said it would serve 3-4 people so that was perfect), and then 4 dishes: a creamy bamboo & chicken curry, a green curry with squid (you can choose what protein you want), pad thai (classic, had to try it), and a pepper shrimp veggie stir fry. It was all delicious but the latter two outshone the former two. The curries come out in what looks like very small bowls, but is the perfect amount for sharing 4-ways. I love bamboo shoots and there were lots in the chicken curry (there was also lots of chicken breasts bits). The green curry was heavy on the thai basil and although I didn't mind that, our friend didn't like the licorc-y taste. The pad thai comes on a huge platter, again with lots of resilient, perfectly-cooked shrimp. The rice noodles were nice and chewy - not overcooked at all. Crunchy peanuts and bean sprouts completed the dish. The stir-fried pepper shrimp was almost like a Chinese dish to me - heavy on the pepper, garlic, and wok-taste. Lots of chopped cilantro and green onions sprinkled over the multitude of veggies and - you guessed it, perfectly-cooked shrimp. Our friend, who doesn't usually eat seafood, ate two shrimp and declared it her favourite dish of the night. They have a small wine list including house wines which you can get in different sizes as well as a few whole bottles of white and red. They also have other cocktails and a few beers (only Singha was listed; otherwise it just said domestic vs imported). Service was good - nothing extraordinary but we didn't really need anything. After tax and tip it came to $150 for the 4 of us - and that included a bottle of wine and a beer. You can pay by credit card. Went there for lunch yesterday. Big mistake. Had the Pad Thai, Now I've had Pad Thai before but never like that. It was terrible, way too sweet and one note. My husband had no Chicken in his so he had some of mine, which was rubbery and tasteless. The shrimp were overcooked and slightly fishy. Totally negative experience. 1. Ordered 1 pad Thai and 1 fry rice. Took them 29 min to cook. It was early evening so they are not really busy. Only 3 tables in total. Plus the time we waited before ordering. That's 40+min for a fry rice and a fry rice noodle. 2. Def not the best pad thai i had. Food is not cheap for the quality, but the portion is not bad. 3. Table is covered by a piece of glass and there is old dry food under there. Its annoying because you have to look at it when you eat. 4 I guess the waitress is really new. She is either too busy with three tables or rude. When she bring my check, I told her to take my card and put my card on that little tray before she put it on my table. Instead of taking my card, she just ignored me and put the check on the table with my card. Then she just turn around and left without say anything. Although it seems unlikely, I really hope she didn't notice me putting my card on her tray before she left it on my table and told her to take my card. Otherwise it just rude. Well I'm sorry for the 13% tip, usually it's 18-20%, but that's just one of my worst experience. read more

Ordered Pad Thai to go and I am not entirely sure what I got. It was unlike any Pad Thai I have ever eaten. It went straight to the trash.

This place is amazing! Its my go-to for thai ever since I moved to Edmonton. They have been open for 20 years as of this Christmas and theres a reason why. Al and Suppane really take pride, while she does the cooking he does all the serving out front. She is from thailand and her cooking is unbelivable. Everything down to the coconut and mango ice cream is handmade. I have tried almost everything on the menu (minus a few seafood dishes) and i have not been dissapointed with one. If you want to be a real dare devil try the pad-prick-king. The chilli mixed with lime leaf is unbelivable. My bf and I have eaten there about 10 or more time as we dont try anywhere else for thai, why try something new when what you have is great right? If you want to feel at home while out for dinner i suggest coming to Ban Thai and seeing for yourself! read more

When we arrived at 6:30pm on a Friday evening the place was pretty quiet. The host asked if we had reservations and we said no. He initially seated us at a corner table for two facing a mirror, and by corner table I mean a triangular table flushed up against a mirror. The oddest thing I had ever seen. We asked to be re-seated. We were then placed at a tiny table near the kitchen facing a bright unshaded window. This we thought was because we didn't have reservations and the place would likely fill up soon. But by the time we finished our meal about an hour later the whole restaurant had only 2-3 other parties. So, they tried to seat us at the two least desirable tables for no apparent reason. The food was very much over priced. The pad tai was overly sweet and soggy, though the halibut red curry was pretty good. read more

I read reviews from others about this Thai restaurant being the best in Edmonton and what not, so I went to this place with high expectations... Pros: The place was authentic and very welcoming. Quiet place with heavy Thai influence. They had a pretty decent menu and the items were moderately priced. The Waitress was very nice as well (but horrible at her job). Cons: I was there with a friend. I ordered the pad thai (with chile, to make spicy) and he ordered a charbroiled dish. My friend's dish came out about 15-20 mins before mine did which isnt timely and a very amateur move and is taught not to do in any waitress 101 course. I know pad thai is not a spicy dish, but I asked the waitress to add a good amount of chile to make it 'thai spicy', which when it eventually came out, was not spicy at all. She didnt ask how are dishes were. Poor waitress. The pad thai also only had 2 regular shrimp on top, with maybe 5 tiny shrimp throughout the whole entree. I was very disappointed with my experience here, especially with other reviews almost 'raving' about their experience at this establishment. My friend's charbroiled pork looked great, and he said it was bangin'. I would give this place a 4 out of 5 or a 5 out of 5 just based on food alone, but the service was so POOR I had to only go to 2/5. read more

This gem is out of the way don't let the outside fool you. The decore is charming and cosey. The food is great authentic Thai. If you like Thai food you have to try Ban Thai. read more
