I'm taking my Labrador here for a year now. I'm a first time dog owner, so I don't have any other experience with other locations! My experience was always pleasant! The staff were always friendly! Never had a problem with staff or vet. I am using their wellness plan and it covers all office visits! I recommend getting it specifically if you have a puppy. It also includes genetic DNA test which can tell you the family tree and genetic code of your dog. I love using their App to make an appointment, ask questions or find records and medications! I had to look for some answers on their App, and the next day I got a phone call to see if I need help with anything! I love the fact that they are open from 7 am and they are also open on weekends. Would advise not bringing your pets here. Other than the mediocre front desk service, there is no communication between vet and client. I had to check my pets records to find out things that should've been communicated to me at the appointment. Followed up by sassy emails from the vet, and they've still not admit to not submitting the labs that I requested. Lastly, waiting for 30 minutes for a prescription that was supposedly already filled. That's just ridiculous. Rude doctors, slow staff, and poor communication. read more

Declined a prescription I sent from Chewy.com when my dog had already been seen for the same skin rash 6months prior. I just needed a refill of the spray. They wouldn't give the prescription without coming in for another visit. All they want is to charge you as much as possible without regard for your pets. read more

Abysmal customer service from the front desk staff, some of the vets we have seen are great but the staff they have working the front desk take away from any positive experience we may have had. Took my dog here for the 1st time. Staff was pleasant and professional. I'm a 1st time dog owner so I'm learning as I go. Was given informative advise and suggestions on food, etc. The vet was patient. Everyone was gentle and loving with my dog. My 10-year-old chessie was recently misdiagnosed with arthritis at this establishment when he had actually been suffering from the onsets of cancer and heart failure. He suffered for a month and a half straight walking around with weak hind legs due to his poor circulation. Something everyone ignored because the doctor said that he was okay. When he got so bad that he eventually started yelping out in pain and having trouble breathing, he was finally given an x-ray. The doctor did not hesitate to recommend euthanasia. This is because Banfield does not provide any coverage for surgery in the event of terminal illnesses or injuries -- in other words, medical emergencies here are a death sentence for pets unless you already come prepared! It wasn't until an entire month later though in a text message that we found out that our beloved Duke had still been very much treatable. But that the doctor thought that they were doing us a favor by saving us the money. Little did I know, another month later, after performing my own research, I found out that Banfield accepts CareCredit. Something the vets here never once suggested that we try using to cover Duke's medical expenses before they killed Duke. Like others have said: DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!!! It is run by 20 to 30-year-olds who don't know their ass from their elbow. Also, who apparently like to make low effort guesses to come up with their early diagnoses too. If you bring your senior dog here, you can guarantee that they will suffer until the point that saving them is beyond affordability. And if you are not careful, and are not already aware of resources like Trupanion, CareCredit, or Scratchpay -- the vets here will euthanize your dog without even making an effort to help you try to save them. So take your senior dog literally anywhere else! Come back for the toys at Petsmart? Maybe. But come back to Banfield? No, stay far away! read more

Don't waste your money I tried to get an appt two months in a row and have a 5 week wait for an appt. Dog had a bad ear infection and couldn't wait so I had to spent $580.00 on another vet. Samething when he had a swollen eye three and half week appt. That vet appt was 384.00. All this by paying $80 a month for pet insurance. And when you're there they just rush you in and out say they're going to call you back with lab results and never do it is ridiculous that they keep taking new customers when they can't help the ones they have total greedy scheme. read more

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. I have never been so angry and frustrated with a business. Last year I gave this place a second chance. Used to take our large breed dog here until we lost him unexpectedly at only 5. Mind you we had just been at banfield the day prior and I had complained of my dog vomiting a lot. Th next night he died from bloat. Which I know happens but I can't help but wonder considering my dogs circumstances. I spent thousands for his care as their insurance doesn't cover outside of banfield. I was completely devastated feeing like I'd lost one of my own children. I call the next day to cancel my care plan. Then I was told that I would have to continue to pay out the monthly payments of our insurance for the year for a plan for a dog that was now dead. I went round and round with them which further led to me finding out they had in the past lied about care performed and then tried to cover it up. Eventually I was able to walk away from the payments after they realized how much they'd messed up. Time goes by and we decided to give them another try. I fully REGRET going back here. My poor dog has been miserable for a week now because no one there can do their jobs. I have 2 voicemails within a day apart being told the exact opposite of what is said in the other. They've sent incorrect medicine dosages, lost chewy rx request that I waited days for, and no matter when you call expect to sit on the phone for 20 minutes. Not to mention I've never seen a doctor or vet that doesn't have allotted sick times. If you call and say your pet is sick and needs to be seen they'll tell you they are booked till next month. If I could give it 0 stars I would ! I made the fatal mistake of taking my beloved Armani here for a cough. They needed X-rays they discussed the options , 1 upgrade my plan , of course I did want the best financial option as this year has nearly destroyed my family due to the pandemic. We upgraded , they ran tests , the vet reassured me that the X-rays showed no congestive heart failure, but blood work showed some elevated renal values, she also gave him an antibiotic for kennel cough and insisted on giving him fluids under the skin to flush his kidneys & a new prescription diet , she also told me his early stage renal issues could be treated by a diet change. Welp turns out my sweet boy began suffering on the way home , labored breathing , intensified cough, stopped eating and drinking so I then rushed him to an ER vet , only to be shown congestive heart failure plain as Day on the X-ray. So I just wonder... did my dog even get X-rays or can the vet not read them properly? Turns out my boy is no loner here, passed the very same day , I left Banfield with 0 concern that my dog was going to die. So here I am locked into the most expensive wellness plan for 1 year and my boy is gone, not to mention $1200 Er vet bill. NOW the best part ... Banfield did their generic next day follow up call, when they asked how he was, I quietly replied , "he died hours later" I got a half a$$ "I'm sorry" one would think the vet would have called and such news was startling as there was no mention that he was on the verge of dying, right? Nope no questions asked not a care in the world. She killed my dog & she caused him to suffer by giving a dog with congestive heart failure fluids ! She even said it herself, " we don't use fluids to treat dogs with heart failure , but since I don't see any on the X-ray I'm going to give him fluid under the skin . That is why my best friend is dead! We knew he had a heart murmur for sometime . I'll regret bringing him here for the rest of my time on earth. We were long time patience of the Columbia Banfield and Dr. Wendell is amazing , this Fredrick location reminds me of a free clinic with rookie mesh students . She failed my dog & me. This location should be investigated. Perhaps I'll work on that while I pay $69 a month for the next 12 months for a dog I no longer have. Do you really think they would have encouraged a dying dog to resign for a more expensive plan for 12 months if they suspected he would die? Sounds messy right? Then the pic below? This place is actually hell for pets and pet owners. I have a multitude of reasons, but I'll describe my most recent experience. My dog had TPLO surgery in January for a torn CCL and meniscus. One of the worst things I've had to go through with my pup. The surgery goes fine, and recovery goes well. Fast forward to June, he starts limping on his other leg, so I set up an appointment for him to get X-rays. Unfortunately for X-rays, they always require a drop off appointment, which are the absolute WORST. I drop him off at 9am. Get a call at 3:30pm, almost 7 hours later, and they ask if I want to do X-rays. So I think "well yea, that's why he's there. What have you been doing with him for the past 7 hours?" The doctor on-site says that it does not look like he needs X-rays, and that he's just overcompensating and sore from using that leg more after his first surgery on the other leg. By recommendation OF A LICENSED VETERINARIAN I decide to save over $500 and not get X-rays. When I picked him up, he SPRINTED out of that office like his life depended on it, his urine was dark gold, he was limping worse than when I dropped him off, and he was sad and depressed for two days (refused to eat, was mopey and not his usual energetic and happy self, and slept more than usual). So he was stuck in a metal crate for almost 7 hours with no walks, water, or attention, and didn't even get the services the appointment was for. Fast forward a month, he no longer puts weight on that leg, limps all day, and any walking he does he's out of commission for days. I schedule yet another appointment for X-rays, and he has torn his other CCL in his other leg. SHOCKER. So I proceed with surgery. The fact that I have to trust my gut over a LICENSED VETERINARIAN is absolutely absurd. This establishment, and Banfield in general, prey on your wallet when you are in a fragile state of mind. They charge almost 200% more for medications that you can get elsewhere, and of course would never tell you that, no matter how many thousands of dollars you have spent there in less than a year. I would not trust them and will surely be looking into other veterinary care options. Their services have gone down in quality so much, it's not even worth the hassle and "convenience ". The only doctor I like is Dr. Ringley. She is responsive, and is always open to discussing concerns with me and weighing options. She's the only one I would ever considering seeing moving forward. My advice would be to avoid at all costs! read more

I absolutely love this facility. The staff is always friendly. Dr. McDonald is very friendly and seems very knowledgeable and takes her time with you and your pet. Brandi is the first nurse we seen and she made it the best experience for us. My daughter wants to be a vet when she grows up and Brandi was thrilled with that thought and let her be apart of the whole experience.. I would recommend this place to anyone just based on the personalized service we receive every time. Even if you think it's expensive or pricey than other places the quality you get is absolutely worth it. read more

This Banfield location is wonderful. The doctors are always thorough and have treated our dogs very well. The receptionists are pleasant and always willing to explain what is and what is not covered on our dogs' wellness plans. The technicians are always so delightful and our dogs love them (except after the chihuahua mix gets his anal glands done, but that is to be expected). We have seen every doctor at this location over the last 4 years and have never had a negative experience with any of them. They are always patient, clear, and willing to answer any questions/concerns. I actually had to switch to another Banfield two years ago because I moved but came back to the Urbana Pike location because of the exceptional service. I have never felt pressured into doing unnecessary tests or treatments... Which is something I have experienced at another location. All the doctors are great, but we love Dr. Ringley, who just recently spayed my German Shepherd puppy and neutered our Chihuahua mix 3 years ago. read more

I have 3 cats that have recently gone through a tough transition. One of them is new to the household and as finicky as cats can be, that stress was enough. Now we have been finding kitty litter use issues right before a planned vacation and were struggling to get things taken care of before we leave. Banfield has made themselves available on pretty short notice to see our cats and try to give a solution as quickly as possible. Their staff, so far, has also been FAR friendlier than the negative reviews have mentioned. My only qualm is the astronomical cost of the meds and the multiple recommendations provided in what seems like an attempt to sell products associated with the store or hospital. Could just be that we are trying every solution at once to find a quick fix, but taking it one idea at a time would help determine the root of these problem without spending a fortune. So far, pretty good experience overall. read more

Warning: This Banfield Pet Hospital has terrible customer service. I took my dog in for his appt and they told me I'll need to reschedule because it "somehow got cancelled". Not by me. When I asked how long it would be to wait they said they are booked solid and can't give me a time. They also said they can't put me in front of anyone else because that would "disrupt their quality of service". well got a call and was pretty much told i don't see how its our fault i have records showing that you where offered xrays witch never happen then told it was offered again on another time witch never happen they even said i paid for meds that i know she never had. me and my wife agree that what there saying is bull because luna is my child i'm not someone that takes lightly any surgical think i'm in my 50's and served in military plus i have broken my neck 2 times i have had back surgery and 8 ankle surgery's and still work for a living and i work for NIH i am around animals all the time. I don't like been talked to like I don't know what I'm saying and if you would have offered to do the xrays i would have had no problem paying when it comes to medical for me and anyone in my family. thats the reason I don't retire because this world functions of money I got to have it need to show off I remember the way people used to be everyone would help out now its what about me. Ah, the McDonald's of veterinarians. I haven't been to this banfield since probably last summer? I wasn't fully into yelping yet. I remember leaving them a review on Google, but not Yelp. However, after taking my pup to the grooming salon at petsmart yesterday, and noticing that they clipped him pretty badly and didn't tell me about it, it reminded me how much I hate petsmart and banfield so I figured I'd go ahead and leave this review. First things first- I have a Yorkie, not aggressive what so ever, he has never bitten at or nipped at anyone ever, he's just extremely excited and lovey! Anytime he sees someone he runs toward them and rolls over on his back to be rubbed! He's such a good boy! He may tinkle when he gets excited, but that's his only downfall! Anyway, anytime he went in for a shot, they could not figure out how to hold him down. He's a wiggly little thing, but he's not the ONLY wiggly little thing, and they acted as if they had never been put in that situation before and even went as far as trying to get us to hold him down. I'm his mommy, I don't want to use force to hold my boy down for a shot! Then, the Indian veterinarian girl comes in to administer the shot and she's just as nervous as I am. So much in fact that she couldn't figure out where to administer the shot and asked the NURSE "what should I do? Should I get him in the jugular?" at this point my fiancé and I are like "oh..my..god." This happened for every shot he ever had to get. On top of that, they ended up accidentally administering multiple shots twice because they couldn't get his records figured out. I would have the documentation proving they already gave him one of his vaccinations, and the blonde AND Indian vet would stand there scrolling through the records saying "hmm..hmm... This doesn't make sense.. When did he come? What did he get? They said it was the lepto shot? Hmm.. No I don't see it here, nope no my records aren't showing that." & then when we'd come for the next shot they would say "why did he get this vaccine twice??" I would explain everything allllll over again and they STILL couldn't figure it out! & of course I'm worried about his health from having the same vaccine done more than once in a short period of time. Thank god he's ok. Next- ear infections. Every. Single. Time. We'd come in just for a check up, and oh! He has an ear infection. Of course we'd pay the $40 for the ear drops and go through hell and back to administer them, just to be safe. However, after the second and third time of them doing this to us, I decided, let's get the eardrops, but let's not give them to him and see what they say on his 2 week checkup. So we'd come in 2 weeks later for the post ear infection checkup, and what do you know?! "Oh yes those ear drops cleared that ear infection right up! Yup this ear is looking nice and healthy now!" Meanwhile, I have a 2 year supply of never used ear drops in my refrigerator if anyone needs some! It's just a scam there! Then when he got neutered, that was the worst. They call us to tell us he's ready, we arrived and that's when they told us he actually wasn't ready to go yet, because he had an episode. We immediately freaked! An episode? What kind of episode! That's when the nurse guy said "What did you feed him before he came here! He had green diarrhea all over the place and he got it on me and I had to clean it up!!" Keep in mind they TOLD me to feed him before coming since he'd be there for 8 hours! Wait a minute, isn't that his job? Shouldn't he be trained to deal with situations like this? I explained he probably had an upset tummy because of all of the medicine and the stress of having his marbles removed! So we came back to get him an hour later, and my dog smells terrible, I'm thinking he was just gassy from having an upset belly. I get him home and there is diarrhea matted into his bottom. So you're telling me that I came to pick him up, and you sent me home because he had an "episode" and then I came back an hour later to get him and you couldn't even clean up his "episode" ?!?! That put him at risk for an infection, seeing as the diarrhea was spread all over his bottom close to wear the incision was made for the neutering. At this point my fiancé and I agreed to finish out the year of the puppy plan, and then invest the extra money for a real vet to ensure the safety and health of my puppy. Please, take my advice. The extra money is worth it. read more

I normally don't do reviews for places, but I really feel like I have to do one for this Banfield. This morning I had to bring my cat in to be put down. He had an extreme form of cancer and his life was coming to an end. Having to put your pet down is one of the worst decisions you will ever have to make, and this Banfield went above and beyond for us. The vet assistant explained everything to us and was very sympathetic. She made sure my cat was very comfortable and gave us as much time as we needed to process. When it came time the vet allowed me to hold him as they put him down, which is not usual with places like an animal shelter. The vet was very quick in administering and he passed very quickly and painlessly. I cannot thank the vets and staff at this banfield enough for how well they treated me and most importantly my really special cat. read more

I'd recommend not using Banfield. They took advantage of my 86 year old mother and her dog. She went in to get her dog vaccinated a year and half ago and they tricked her in getting a wellness plan that was $39/month. Since Covid started in 2020 and since being isolated at home for over a year she has not taken her pet into their facility once and there is nothing that she could do to take her dog to the vet or go out because it was mandated by state that should could not go and also her age without a vaccine shot it's too dangerous to take her dog to the vet. So every month for over a year they have been charging her card $39/month for a wellness plan that she doesn't and can't use. When I called them up to explain, they said that she is in a binding contract and they can't refund her money. To make matters worse, because her account renewed, she is bound for another year to still pay! This is awful for someone who is on a fixed budget and struggling through this time period with being alone in the house and not being able to go out. So lucky she has her dog to keep her company. Please, please, please do not use them or if you do, please do not have them trick you into getting one of their wellness plans. The fine print in the contract leaves you in a bad position. Better to deal with a local vet who cares about you and your pet more so then making money!! read more

I'm not going to lie, I was kind of skeptical about coming here because the whole Optimum Wellness Plans sounded too good to be true. Every other vet I visited charged basically 1 months payment at Banfield for 1 SHOT. So I was worried that maybe it's the kind of place you get what you pay for, and since it was such a great deal financially, I worried about the quality of care. I'm thrilled to say that I was so wrong. My puppy "grew up" at Banfield...got all his shots, his neuter, all his visits here. The staff is so sweet and they're always so attentive to my pup. I cannot imagine going anywhere else. I have friends that go to Kingsbrook Animal Hospital across town and they paid almost $500 for their dog's neuter. $500!!!! Each of their shots when their dog was a baby was at least $40-$70. I pay about $60 a month for ALL of his 1st year's worth of shots, heartworm medicine, flea/tick treatment, AND neuter. And I swear that the quality of care is not lacking in the slightest. I love how convenient the location is being inside of PetSmart. When we first got our pup, we were at PetSmart every other day picking up something we didn't realize we needed. We were also at Banfield every 2-3 weeks for checkups and shots so it was always so easy to go to his appointment, grab whatever I needed, and be out the door all in a one stop shop. If you're on a budget but want to get your pup the best care (and why wouldn't you!), then go to Banfield. I can't speak on any other locations, but this one on Urbana Pike is wonderful and you won't be disappointed. read more

Great place- Friendly staff- Knowledgeable doctors. I live in Silver Spring and I take my pets here- Dr "D" is always very good explaining options and/or treatments, and when she is not there, I have faith that whatever doctor is working that day will treat me the same. The staff always find a way to accommodate me and my pets. Example: One Friday morning- I had an issue with my cat. Wanting to stay local for convenience, I called Banfields around my area. I couldn't get an appointment at any Banfield around Silver Spring, Bethesda, Rockville even The Kentlands. One of the places said that- I could come in and wait for the doctor to come in. They should be in around 1:00PM - and there would be an additional "Drop Off" charge- even if I stayed and waited in the waiting room with my cat in the carrier-I believe it is actually a "walk in" charge-but that is just my opinion- as is the rest of this review. I called up this Banfield in Frederick and was finished with the visit and on my way home in 3 hours. AND no "Drop Off" charge. read more

The annual plan with the teeth cleaning is good but I enjoyed the experience at my former vet dr. Mecenas more. Banfield does the work and takes care of my dogs exams but it's just a different experience not quite as personal not quite as nice a non example of how it's different is on Sunday the website says they open at 9 the phone turned on about 10 after 9 today and they said that the vet doesn't come in until 10 so it's hard to understand how there's value in opening at 9 if the vet doesn't start until 10 at the other facility out on 26 the website says they open at 9 to but the phone says they don't open till 10 read more

I've been coming to this Banfield location for the last 3 years for my cats. Although most of the doctors are very nice and thorough, the rest of the staff's service is a crapshoot. Lately, they've messed up medicine records, and usually when I have to call, they are not very nice. Disappointing! I'm thinking about trying the other location in Frederick, MD. read more

Absolutely HORRIBLE experience I've ever had with a vet. I've had dogs my whole life and I've been to different vets, and this is the absolute WORST vet I've ever been to. I have an anxious 12 pound dog without a mean bone in his body and they were scared of him and treated him as though he was a huge aggressive dog. They didn't try to get to know him or comfort him they just came right in saw he was shaking and trying to climb in my arms to get away from them and they grabbed him and put an extremely tight and too small of a muzzle on him causing him to panic. I've never seen my dog in such distress If they were competent and had a clue about dogs they would have known to let him sniff them and to talk to him trying to comfort him and relieve his anxiety. Not man handle him and cause him even more anxiety. I went to this vet because my old vet raised their prices a lot. I will NEVER again go this horrible place I will pay the extra costs and stick with Buckeystown Vet where they know what they're doing and have never treated my dog horribly or like an aggressive dog because he is the furthest thing from it. I realize lots of dog owners deny their dogs being aggressive, but I'm not an idiot and know my dog. He's never had a problem at the vet before (other then his anxiety which I'm pretty sure no dog is excited to be at the vet) he lets anyone and everyone do anything to him and has never growled or snapped. Also, these idiots tried double charging me for my visit and the vaccines because they can't keep accurate records and are just complete IDIOTS. read more

No. No. And No. I have been with Banfield for over four years now, first in Gainesville, VA then in Bethesda, MD. While in Gainesville, the vets were nice enough but I still kept a primary vet who truly knew what he was doing. Bethesda MD was a dream. Perhaps this experience raised my expectations for Banfield vets. Dr. K was marvelous. Then I moved to Frederick and switched to the Urbana Pike clinic. The girls at the front are quite nice and helpful, so no complaints there, but the vet! She is the "Chief of Staff" so I elected her as my dog's vet and what a HORROR. One of my angels needed a cyst removed and the stitches she sewed looked like I did it! My poor baby has puckering, lumpy sutures that are uneven. I was shocked when I picked her up as I know it will leave a horrible scar. I have taken my other dog for surgery elsewhere for a luxating patella and VOSM of Annapolis Junction rebuilt his knee with barely a trace of a scar. This Banfield vet, Dr. McDonald the "Chief of Staff" of Frederick stitched my dog like a bad home economics project. Then I, mistakenly, tried her again for simple shots. She jabbed at my poor baby and my dog yelped and leapt off the table! He was BLEEDING afterwards, and her response was "oops, must have hit a bad spot, sorry." Are you kidding me! She looks all of twelve and is a complete ditz and amatuer who should NOT be practicing medicine yet. No more! No way. Please do not go here with your beloved pet! read more

We have been Banfield customers since they opened the Urbana office. If you don't mind the "Doggie HMO" model (see different vets etc) which we never have I think it is an excellent investment to do the monthly plans, keeping your pet(s) on schedule and ensuring they get everything they require. The staff, from front desk to vet techs to the vets have always been nice and the vets, in our experience, have gone the extra mile for us. We even had a very feisty larger dog and they were always very tolerant of him (so not sure about the review to the contrary). One of our rescue Australian shepherds we found out was a "lethal white" and could not tolerate certain meds or anesthesia and the vet did her due diligence before our dog was spayed or we selected heartworm meds. We have (sadly) had three of our dogs (all very old) need to be euthanized over the years and they have approached the process in a very understanding, supportive way. Our most recent experience was not an emergency so I had made an appointment for our 14 year old collie to be euthanized as she was in very bad shape. Banfield had a privacy block on the door when we arrived, ushered us right in, had the lights dim and a blanket there. We felt they made the best out of a terribly rough situation and we are grateful. read more
