This is a must try if you're on the Big Island!! It's just a cooler on the side of the road. $4/loaf of the best banana bread you've ever had! You can either drop some cash into the little metal box on the table or use the Venmo code under the lid. We picked up 3 loaves, some apple bananas, and avocados on our first day. Then, we went back near the end of our trip to get a few more! They were sold out, but there's a number to call and the baker's husband brought out a few piping hot loaves of bread. Wow!!! It's even more amazing when it's hot. I do a lot of baking and I make a lot of banana muffins, and even I'm impressed with Jeanette's skill. The bread is perfectly caramelized on the outside, the sprinkle of crushed mac nuts and sugar on top, with the moist interior is just perfect. Our kids were fighting daily at breakfast for the "end pieces", lol! We'll definitely be back someday! Mahalo! read more

While visiting the Kona Coast in Hawai'i we decided to visit the Painted Church. On our way we happened upon a banana bread vendor on the side of the road and decided to stop and check it out and we are so glad we did. We met a gentleman who told us his wife bakes the banana bread daily and mixes?sprinkles macadamia flake in and on top of the bread. She had just baked some loaves and he was setting them out for sale. We both agreed it was the best banana bread we had ever tasted - and my wife bakes great banana bread herself. The vendor said some people who stop and taste their banana bread return a few days later and buy all his inventory to take back home. Hint: If you plan to visit this stand get there early because they sell out read more

Amazing! And I love the concept- it's always out and you pay on honor system via cash, Venmo, or zelle. I bought one and as soon as I got back into my car I opened it and ate some, and I immediately got back out of my car and paid for a second one. It's sooo good! So worth the short drive. read more

Definitely plan a stop here while visiting the nearby coffee farms. We bought 3 loaves and it was the best decision ever. The loaves are topped with a sweet topping containing macnuts that make it unique and better than the rest. It's moist and flavorful, definitely one of the best banana breads I've had while visiting the Hawaiian islands. It's also super affordable at $4 per loaf. You pay via honor system through Venmo. When we arrived around 6:15pm, there were no more loaves in the cooler but there were a few phone numbers with a note posted on the cooler that said to please call if there were no more loaves so they can bring some up :) The owners are super kind and happily brought up some more loaves so we can purchase some. I think they said they filled the cooler with 52 loaves before they left for the day! I don't have a picture of the loaves because we ate them so quickly but just trust me when I say this is a must stop and you won't regret it! read more

Worth every mile! We're staying in Waikoloa and drove out just for this banana bread--so glad we did. It's moist, fluffy, and packed with the freshest macadamia nuts (tastes like they were just collected!). When we arrived, no one was at the stand--it's an honor system, so you leave your payment and open the cooler. Inside were gorgeous loaves waiting for us. We bought two and wished we'd grabbed more. I've tried banana bread all over the islands--this one truly stands out. Don't miss it if you love banana bread! read more

Hands down the BEST banana bread I've ever had!!!! We bought a loaf after finding this spot going to the painted church and quickly real the next morning we did not buy enough! We then spent 2 days looking for it because we could not remember where it was. We bought 5 that day then went back again for 5 more (they were out we called the number and they brought fresh bread to us right away) to bring back to Arizona to share with friends and family. I am sad to be all out of bread now and stuck with the craving of wanting more. How much to have some delivered!? read more

This place is THE definition of a hidden gem. It's literally on the driveway of someone's home on a windy residential road in the Captain Cook area! My friend recommended this place and said I HAVE to get more than just one loaf. My husband and I aren't one to disobey orders, so we grabbed two loaves. AND IT WAS NOT ENOUGH STILL. You may be thinking to yourself...how good can banana bread be? Well, this one has mac nuts distributed within and on top of it. It has this ridiculously amazing sugar glaze on top of it. I'm pretty sure I'll be turning my nose at any glaze-less banana breads in my life from now on. At $4 each, my hubby and I will promptly be driving back tomorrow for more. read more

We stumbled upon this little roadside gem after reading a review about their banana bread, and let me tell you, it's not just gold--it's a platinum treasure hidden in plain sight! The texture? So smooth it could moonlight as a pillow. The taste? It's like an explosion of joy doing the cha-cha on my taste buds! And the moisture level? Enough to make a water park jealous! Their customer service reply really made up for the previous experience with their staff and they ensured me they would address the issue with their team. :) Old review: I visited the Gypsea Gelato in Kona today and was extremely disappointed with the service. I ordered a single scoop child's cone and was told "We only have our Ube waffle cones, we are out of the rest... but don't worry they don't really taste like ube". I said ok, that should be fine since my daughter wants a cone. When I get to the register, after they had already filled her cone, I was told the price was $8.50 for the child's size ice cream and charged an additional $3 for their "specialty cone". Prior to choosing the cone, I was not told anything about it costing $3 additional dollars. Nor that a kids size scoop for that cone would be $8.50 when it should usually be $4.99. So I paid $11.50 for a child's ice cream. When I brought my concern up to the 3 teenagers working there, they all made me feel as though I was in the wrong for not knowing my child's cone would be $11.50. One of the staff checked to see if there was a price on the front of the sample cone thinking she could rub that in my face but there was no price shared. So, I had literally no way of knowing how much I would end up paying until it was too late and no apology or kindness was shown whatsoever. Another staff member said "we aren't in charge of what they give us"... and to that I say, that doesn't absolve you from sharing the price of this speciality option -which again, was the only cone option offered. Had I known I would be paying $11.50 for a child's cone, we would have happily ordered the $4.99 cup. I'd appreciate if the manager would get in touch with me -not so much for the outrageous cost but more for the fact that their staff provided such poor service in not sharing the price, and not trying to kindly resolve the issue.

We visited on a Saturday in the mid-afternoon, and most of the pastries were already gone. They're usually well-stocked at the farmers markets, though, so that's another option. One downside: If you're buying at the farmers markets, be sure to bring cash. They don't accept electronic payments, which is always disappointing. I never seem to have cash on hand, so I've only purchased from the bakery itself. Beautiful space, delicious drinks, and sourdough worth coming back for!

There are so many yummy things on the menu that it was so hard to decide, but I decided on a crunch wrap and my husband ordered a burger. First off, I love how the restaurant is set up with almost food-truck atmosphere and outdoor seating. That's so perfect for such a wonderful area and beautiful weather. The two employees working, which I believe are the owners, were super nice and genuinely happy to help us. I ended up asking a few more questions while we waited for our food, and they were very helpful. Due to their input, I ended up also getting a cheesecake slice (yum) and dole whip (for the first time, and holy *!+$! it was sooo good I've been dreaming about it since!). Our food was available pretty quickly, and it looked amazing! My husband greatly enjoyed his burger, which is saying something since he's all about veggie burgers now (recent convert to vegetarian, so still extremely discerning). My crunch wrap was AMAZING! Everything about it was so good. The dipping sauce was fantastic, and I would have that for virtually every meal if I could. The crunch wrap was perfectly hot and full of all sorts of yummy! The tortilla was toasted well and wasn't just a boring white tortilla: I'm pretty sure it was a wheat tortilla with a great flavor. I wish I lived closer. I'd be here all the time. Until then, I'll wear my merch with pride and continue dreaming about dole whip and crunch wraps!
