Bamboo Fire is a small restaurant that serves Caribbean food. It is located in Delray Beach, off the beaten path, and hidden from the main thoroughfare of restaurants, in a section that is more residential than anything. It is quite a hidden gem.
RUN to this place! Now! I just tried this place for the first time on Sunday and let me tell you, coming from South Beach, it is DEFINITELY worth the drive! Beverly and Donald hosted a special off the menu dinner for our table and we were all in awe. Not a single unhappy face!
We started with a sample of meatballs, which were delicious. Next up, fried okra with remoulade sauce. I have had okra, usually with tomato sauce, sometimes fried, but always sliced. This was a nice change, I had no idea okra got to be so long and thick (that's what she said!) when left in its whole form. The breading was not too thick and the sauce was delicious. Bonus: try their homemade hot sauces, I loved their flaming hot sauce, it was not overwhelmingly hot but was good on everything.
Next up, fried eggplant slices. I have no idea what they put in the eggplant, but the texture was creamy, rather than crisp. Wow! I must learn some cooking tips.
Next up, pickles. I know what you're thinking "green cucumbers, what is so special about that?", but you would be wrong, because these are pickled fruits. Carambola, grapes, mango, peach, pineapple, and cucumber among other things. I know what else it is you're thinking: "sour and sweet? That's an odd combination, it must not be appetizing", but you'd be so wrong. It is that very combination that makes this exotic, and the small chili peppers gave it a nice kick of hotness. I think my favorite fruit was the mango, although the carambola was also delicious.
The next item was the stuffed mussels, which were stuffed with rice. Unfortunately, Beverly said this took a long time to prepare, so she won't be doing it again, but I am glad I got to taste this rarity.
The next course was tostones with egg and duck bacon. I had never tried duck bacon, or duck, for that matter. The combination of the soft, gooey egg and the hard tostones was a great contrast, along with the flavorful, tender, smoky duck bacon. I think this was one of my favorite items, along with skirt steak, the next item.
Along with the skirt steak, we got a large serving dish of rice, which had some lentils in it and accompanied the skirt steak very well. If you've had lomo saltado, you will probably think this is reminiscent of it. Skirt steak is a bit tricky, some places make it rather hard and chewy, but this was just right. The plantain fries were nice and crispy and the onion and sauteed peppers gave the meat a delicious flavor.
The last item from the main course menu was a jerk chicken with mofongo. The mofongo had pieces of pork, which added flavor, and the jerk chicken was tender and delicious. All of the food was so good that none of it went to waste. Beverly brought us a special chopped scotch bonnet sauce, which I poured liberally onto the chicken.
Dessert was a very tender, flavorful bread pudding, containing raisins, rum on the bottom, and fluffy whipped cream, which added a bit of sweetness to it.
Throughout the meal, we enjoyed Beverly and Donald's hospitality, and got to meet their daughter, who looks a lot like Zoe Kravitz. They were very accommodating and constantly asking for our opinions and input. They are very sweet people who make sure you lack nothing.
They have live music on certain days, and most of the time they set up outside, in the outdoor seating area. If you're interested, you should probably call ahead of time to find out the days and times they play. They are open on certain Sundays, as there were other people eating at the restaurant while we were all there for our event. We did not get to hear the live band, but we enjoyed the sounds of reggae, which added to the beachy, relaxed atmosphere and Caribbean meal. I cannot wait to go back and enjoy this slice of heaven. read more
