Bill Brown did an auxiliary input with USB to replace my cigarette lighter 12 volt so I could finally hook my Blackberry up and play music, etc. as opposed to having the volume on my phone maxed out. The process from planning, parts ordering, setting an appointment, etc. was easy. Bill's a personable dude and patient once since my Volvo wasn't the most installation friendly vehicle. Overall, I got a aux/USB input installed on my car that looks factory and also the work is warrantied as long as you don't try messing with it yourself. Ballard Custom Audio isn't going to have a shop that looks like Magnolia, Best Buy, Car Toys or whatever but the final product speaks for itself and you're supporting a truly non-corporate, local business and that's good Karma. read more

I waited a couple months to write this review just to be sure everything was working well (it is). I have a 2007 4Runner that I really like, but the electronics were dated (e.g., CD player in the dash). I looked at new cars and didn't find anything I liked as well as my old 4Runner, so I decided to look into getting new electronics. I am so glad I did, and very glad I found Ballard Customer Audio. Bill took the time to understand my needs and make "right sized" recommendations for radio, amplifier, speakers, etc. I now have a touch-screen radio with SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, backup camera, dash cam, and upgraded speakers with subwoofer and it all looks like it was installed at the factory. I also have an inverter for 120VAC power under the front passenger seat. They installed sound deadening material that cut the road noise down tremendously. I came in about a month ago to get my subwoofers/amp installed and possibly some new rear speakers. The owner said one of his guys will do the installation of amp and subwoofer, and that its take 2 hours and that id get a phone call when its done. So i left the car and hit a near by starbucks with a friend. 3 hours later with no phone call i come back and see the young guy whose SUPPOSE to be working on my car taking a smoke break down the street, and i see NO ONE working on my car. 45min- hour after that it was finally finished. Owner said 2 hours, took nearly 4. They did a good job at fixing the rattle my license plate was causing, but BROKE a screw inside the license plate screw spot, and didnt tell me about it either. As far as the rear speakers, they tried to charge me a hefty price (forget exact number) because it was "difficult" to do. so i said i would do it myself. They then came up with all this bullsh** i had to do in order to replace the rear speakers. Such as taking off several panels that made absolutely no sense at all. I just did the replacement myself and it took less than an hour. All i had to do was pop off the guard and unscrew a couple screws. Which is exactly what they said COULD NOT be done. They instructed a much more difficult way that would not even have worked. I really dont appreciate how they tried to BS me into thinking it would be a hard process so i would end up paying them to do it. I dislike how it took nearly double the stated amount of time to get the job done Pissed how my license plate is hanging on by only 1 screw now I feel as if these guys were over priced and just trying to get money out of me. They appear as very nice guys, but i guess its just a front. My experience here did not match the other reviews. Do not recommend this place. read more

After buying my car, I was on the search to look for a trustworthy place to install a car alarm with remote start on my 2014 Mazda 3. Ballard Custom Audio came up with excellent reviews on Yelp, and I called to ask some questions and then later decided to stop by to see what my options were. The shop itself looks far from pretentious on the outside, but you should never judge a book by its cover. I met Bill, the owner, and he gave me some advice and a quote on how much it would cost to install the car alarm for my car. I was able to book an appointment to drop off my car a month later (their schedule gets booked up fast!). My car alarm took 2 days to install, in order to make sure everything was working properly and not be rushed. Everything worked fine except for the fact that after turning my car on with the remote start, the car engine dies after I open the door! Unfortunately, this was an unexpected surprise for both of us since Bill told me that my car was wired to do this regardless of the type of alarm installed. He didn't realize this until after the installation was done. Even though I was more concerned about the car alarm working properly in which it did, I wished that there was more research done on the compatibility with my car and the takeover procedure of the remote start function where it would not have to force my car engine to shut off every time I open the door. I hate to do this but I have to deduct 1 star on my overall experience. On the bright side, I do get a lifetime warranty and I can always call back in the future to see if I can get the remote start issue fixed for free. read more

This place is great! I would recommend to anyone to come here for installation. First off, I know nothing about stereo equipment let alone ones for your car. I emailed them and got a quote right away, I followed up with a call and got to make a appointment for two weeks later. Again the person I was dealing with was nice and helpful. At my appointment, told I was the facts, explained what I was being charged for and I would pay once completed to make sure I was satisfied. After 3 hours my car was done on time as they said. I haven't had any work done here yet but when inquiring about an autokey keyless entry system Bill asked me to bring the car in so we can chat about it. Once I did Bill walked me through the options and told me how expensive the full suite of features (keyless entry, alarm, remote start) would cost to get installed. He then asked about my needs and what I was looking to get out of the system, because a lot of the cost came from the remote start feature and if I was looking for just the keyless entry then it would be much cheaper. I didn't feel pressured at all to pick one or the other. He seemed genuinely interested in making sure I got what I was needing . He spent a half an hour with me just chatting about the process, the install prices of each portion of the system, and timelines. Bill is obviously very passionate about his work and the quality he delivers. He might be a bit more pricey than your average stereo shop, but I can tell from other reviews and pictures of installations that there's a really good reason for it and why he's booked up for weeks on end. After changing out my antenna, my old stereo in my 1987 Minnie Winnie Winnebago stopped working and after much time, I decided to call these guys and ask if they could take a look. Bill and Jordan were not only friendly,informative and helpful they did a quick test on my unit and alas! After 30 years of use it had gone to the graveyard...GO FIGURE! :-). I was in luck as an appointment had been cancelled and they set to work right away replacing it with a brand new modern stereo with blue-tooth and the works, installed for a very reasonable price. I sat in the motor home and watched them and they answered a plethora of my questions while they did the installation. They were so professional I thought I was in a dentist office and not a audio repair shop. I was dazzled with all the features of the new unit, but after installation I noticed that my windshield washer no longer worked. I had a system installed on my 2014 Audi A4 by Bill back in 2013. The system was originally an LC6, a Kenwood amp, a custom subwoofer box in the trunk and Morel speakers for the fronts and backs. After a short period of time, I found out about another piece of hardware that could be used to replace the LC6 and potentially integrate with the Audi system directly - a Mobridge DA2. Bill had never heard of them, but was happy to give it a try, and we got it installed. Fast forward to the present, and the Mobridge had stopped working (some combination of it being my own fault for playing with the setup, and the mobridge being very poorly documented and unreliable.) I went back in and Bill was quite happy to help bring the system back to a working state. I don't think I can emphasize enough how friendly, knowledgeable and helpful Bill has been - other than the drive into Seattle from the east side, Ballard Custom Audio has been an awesome place to go for my car. I called them on a whim -- my wife and I just purchased a small shuttle bus that we're converting into a kämping-wagen/party bus and I was daunted by the idea of installing a great audio system in there. Bill and Elysha were immediately excited by the project. Bill worked closely with me to match my budget and my big dreams for the bus. He carefully explained his product choices, and the exact way he was going to setup the system. He scheduled me quickly, just a few days out. And once I rolled the beast into the garage, he was done fast. He discovered some other issues with the bus like my bad rear battery, explained how and why it was negatively affecting the system, then invited me in to help fix it. Service here is top notch. I had an iSimple cable installed that would allow me to connect my iPhone to my car stereo. After several months the cable stopped working properly. I brought it back in and got a replacement, no charge. It then happened again, and I just brought it in and was offered an upgrade to Bluetooth for just the cost of the parts. Bill and Jordan at Ballard custom were a pleasure to work with and I'm happy to recommend them. I wanted an Alpine head unit installed in my 2005 Scion tC and Bill helpfully listed out the pros and cons of the particular unit I wanted vs. others from Pioneer. Once I'd decided on the unit, Jordan was able to find me an appointment the same week, knowing that I was excited and in a bit of a hurry so that I wouldn't exceed the return policy on the unit. On the day of my install Bill quickly determined I was missing a bracket from my factory stereo that he'd need in order to complete the work. Rather than send me on my way, Bill kept working on what he could get done while my wife drove the bracket over to us. During the work, I sat on a stool in the shop and chatted away with Bill and Jordan about business and life, and it was like hanging out with friends. Once the job was done, everything worked great and looked good. Ballrad Custom gets 5 stars because they were so nice, but mentally there's a half star knocked off because I think they should consider how they handle their considerable success. When my install was being done, it seemed like the volume of walk-ins and phone calls was quite high, which is obviously a good sign, but I also felt that Bill and Jordan were spread *just* a bit too thin, and might risk losing clients. For example, I had to call back to catch a live person when my voicemail went unanswered the first time. read more

As I told the ladies across the street at the way station "I came here because he seems to be the only guy in King County that knows about stereo installation". It's not far from the truth. I have a 20th AE GTI that I've mucked with over the years, and one day a few years ago I busted the connector to the antenna. Parts went a flyin. I thought I'd fix it later. Fast forward, I got a new stereo (without a tape deck this time). Took it out and thought "crap, how am I going to deal with this problem". I called a local stereo place my mechanic recommended, and a VW dealership, another local place. Everyone was completely incompetent and frankly unwilling to help. Bill at Ballard Custom Audio heard the problem and said "Yeah I'm pretty sure I can help you out, bring it on by". Now my preference would be to replace the connector with the same one, but even doing research online, these connectors seem to be unicorns. He offered instead to just splice the antenna with the right adapter for the new stereo, and install it. An hour and a half later, he was done. It was installed wonderfully, at a reasonable price. I'd make the trip out here from Woodinville any day for the great service he gave. Oh and hanging out at the Way Station Cafe across the street wasn't bad either. read more

I needed to find someone who could do a bit of customizing to put in a new multimedia head unit and back-up camera in my older vehicle. However the shop had actual pictures up on their website of both the vehicle I have and the work they did on it--which was exactly what I wanted. I brought my '87 VW Vanagon here. It's a classic! But difficult to get good sound in one of those things - they're big and boxy, the doors are pretty slim, etc. Turns out vanagons are in vogue these days, and these guys have seen quite a few of them. They did so amazingly on it. Also, they worked with me, walked me through options, and got it all done on a tight schedule. Very fun. Turns out that the day I was there was the day of the Fremont solstice naked bike ride. So I got a coffee and cheered naked bikers in day-glo paint while the guys worked on my van. I got a backup camera installed here for my Subaru. I gave them a call and the person was very helpful over the phone with many details and told me if I stopped by I'd get a consultation. No appointment necessary. The hardest part was finding them as it literally is a hole in the wall. The owner took a look at my car and told me what my options were. In order to get the price lower, I gave up some of the features. The unit came with a new stereo and some of the stereo features didn't interest me. We made an appointment within two weeks and I brought my car in and they installed the camera. It was pretty uneventful. When I went to pick it up they took their time to walk me through the new stereo. They even set up my bluetooth. I never felt rushed. I love the camera. I'm much better at parallel parking. No more bumping the cars behind me. And I really feel it's the ethical thing to do. I would be devastated if I hurt anyone with my car. I really wish this were something that was required. I had a new Sony car stereo I'd been wanting to install in my Kia Sedona for a while, but I was unsure how to wire the harnesses together on my own, so there it sat, gathering dust for months. Then I came across BCA's great Yelp reviews and decided to call, but Bill indicated he was booked 5 months out to do a total install. After asking if he knew anyone who could just remove the wiring harness off the old stereo and wire the new stereo's harness together (which was all I really needed), Bill offered to make time the next day to do so and for just a small charge (much less than what it would've cost at BestBuy to do a full install, which was my next option). Sure enough, Bill took just 20 minutes to do the job, during which he let me watch, willingly answered my questions, and engaged in friendly chit-chat. A couple of thing. First you will pay a little more. Second, it may take a little longer to have the install done. Third, IT IS WELL WORTH IT! I am a music freak. I have had stereo systems installed by Car Toys and Super Stereo Warehouse. I have always felt a bit uncomfortable with kids that think they are expert installers and not being able to see what they have done to my vehicle. My last install was done at SSW and it was not the most pleasent. I hate when installers call you and say "Hey we need to add this and it will cost you." Then you pick up your care and they say "Hey we needed this but didn't have it so you will need to bring the car back." Then YOU find the part a couple blocks from thier shop. Then you pull the stereo out to put the part in. Then you see a lot of electrical tape and speakers that were not hooked up. Not so with Bill @ BCA. Between him and Logan, they had me covered. Logan (sales guy and Bill's right hand guy) walked me through what would be good ideas to get the quality I wanted. Bill (owner and installer) did an outstanding job and went above and beyond. He/they even fixed something for me that the car dealer had screwed up and had bothered me for a few years. My dash was a bit out of line and I'm a little OCD about my vehicles. The dealer wanted to charge me again to fix it right. When I went to pick up the car (Jeep) Bill said "I fixed your dash on the house." That made my day. It's the little things. Then we turned on the system to run me through it. You don't get that at CT's or SSW. I didn't want to get out of the car it sounded so good. Logan made sure my phone synced with the Bluetooth and tested it to make sure it sounded good on both ends. The car wasn't quite ready when I went to pick it up but I got to spend some time with Bill's three year old son in the shop. What a delightful little guy. My only complaint.
