"Selamat Makan" is roughly Bon Appetit in Indonesian. Although I was born in the US, my parents are from Indonesia, so my upbringing was centered around family gatherings and tons of delicious Indonesian Cuisine. When I heard all the rave reviews of Bali Express in Carson, we had to try it. What started as a Food Truck, Bali Express has found a permanent home in a space shared with Fuego Street Tacos. An interesting set up but it works. There is a nice amount of seating and the two vendors seem to make it work. Nice. We ordered one of my wife's favorite dishes, Beef Rendang. Tender beef simmered for hours (and hours) in a thick, soy sauce based sauce. Done properly, it has rich flavors and in this case, just a touch of Sambal (Chili sauce). The flavors were authentic but the meat was not as tender as I would have hoped. It wasn't bad but a hallmark of Rendang perfection is the tenderness of the meat. While it was fine for me, unfortunately the heat was a bit too much for my wife, who ultimately could not eat the dish because it was too spicy. Indonesian cuisine is inherently spicy (when cooked properly), so buyer be ware. We also ordered Gado Gado. A very traditional Vegetable Salad kind of dish. Gado Gado is one of those dishes that can vary from the availability of vegetables, to regional differences to differences in recipes handed down from generation to generation. As such, while this was not the same as my "mom would make", it was pretty darn close. Based on shredded cabbage, there was a plentiful amount of tofu, potatoes (nice touch), seasoned hard boiled egg and other treats. The dish is topped with a peanut sauce. I would definitely order again but wished the sauce had a richer, more peanuty taste. This is a 100% a personal preference thing and not a criticism of the dish. The Gado Gado is great. We also tried the Shrimp Tempura. While not Indonesian, the Shrimp Tempura was well executed. Lightly breaded, the shrimp was fried to have a nice crispy snap to the coating but not at all greasy. The flavor was rich and light and served with a sweet sauce. Today, my parents have both passed so my opportunities for authentice Indonesian is pretty limited. Bali Express is the real deal. I really wanted to give high praise after visiting this spot but was pretty disappointed. The noodles were extremely greasy (pooling at the bottom) and lacked flavor, lemon grass chicken were little fried nuggets (i'd expect grilled), and to top it off, water was not complimentary with a very spicy dish ($2 a pop). No matter how authentic this is, these are some things that can and should be improved. Im really doubting all the awards and trophies that this place touts. read more

First of all, "authentic" is subjective; regardless of cuisine, flavors, texture, and even ingredients and preparation method varies and each are authentic to regions and cooks. I grew up eating Indonesian food and other Southeast Asian cuisines, and always look for Indonesian food whenever we travel, and was excited to see there were two in Carson City. The other one was my first choice but they're closed on Mondays, so we came here on our way to Tahoe. We arrived a little after 4pm so it was quiet. The chef's husband walked us through the menu and ordering system, all the time hyping up the food and flavor and multiple awards they've won and how everybody loved/raved about their food and had never tasted flavors like theirs. The man is clearly very proud of his wife, which we appreciate. Since rendang was sold out, we decided on lemongrass chicken with yellow rice for the hubs, chicken satay with fried rice for the kid, and gado gado for me. We also ordered canned drinks but were offered free bottled water (for dining in) which we accepted with gratitude. Food came relatively quickly, fifteen minutes or so. Presentation was nice, with banana leaf on wooden platter and silverware and napkin. This particular lemongrass flavor is unfamiliar to me, and aside from heat from the chili it was flat. The chicken pieces were deep fried and dry. The nasi kuning must be old because it was hard, and there was barely any flavor. The chicken satay pieces were alright according to the kid, a little dry but tasted good. The nasi goreng was so-so, I see bits of fried egg and tasted kecap manis, but most importantly it was oily. The gado gado was actually acceptable, even if the tofu and potato cubes had been refried to a crisp, as was the hardboiled egg (also fried), and the peanut sauce was chunky and not creamy enough and lacked the distinct spices and flavor. The man had told us the ingredients are sourced fresh from Indonesia. Given they're in the middle of nowhere, it is not surprising if the food was prepped/cooked in batches instead of made fresh to order. Perhaps we came on an "off" day. Perhaps the raving reviews and awards were for the rendang only, which we didn't get to sample. If he had not talked our ears off the minute we stepped into the restaurant, perhaps we would not have had such high expectations of our meal. The chef seemed like a sweet woman and I wish her well. Might I suggest that her husband let customers determine for themselves if the food is truly amazing instead of forcing his extended elevator spiel on them. 3.5 stars, only because I am supporting an immigrant woman chasing her dreams in this political climate. read more

The food here is absolutely amazing! A friend suggested this place so after a day of work in Carson City my nephew and I decided to stop in. We were warmly welcomed and given a quick run down of everything that was offered. Balinese food is not any easy food to find so we were very excited to have a place so close by. The food did not disappoint!! The spices and flavors are out of this world. I will be returning with different friends so they can give it a try. They also offer all of their sauces for sale. I recently heard about this new Indonesian restaurant and decided to stop in after a few games of bowling. I always enjoy trying something new, so I ordered the Tum Babi. Unfortunately, the entrée just wasn't for me. I was expecting something a bit like kalua pork, and the flavor profile was very different from what I had in mind. So Craig, why 4 stars? I looked over the menu and saw other dishes coming out, and I'm confident mine was prepared correctly--it simply didn't match my personal taste. I didn't want to under rate the restaurant just because the dish I chose didn't fit my palate. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the presentation was excellent. The space is shared with a separate taco place. You walk in and no one to greet you or direct you immediately on whether to sit or order. We saw a tablet so we started our order. (If you wanted tacos, you would go to the back of the restaurant.) We ordered the Sata Ayam Nasi Goreng, (chicken over cooked and dry; probably off day), Rendang With Rice (our favorite and would come back here for it again). FLAVORRRR! We were passing through from Tahoe and found this place through yelp and decided to give it a shot. We ordered the Beef Rendang and chicken satay with nasi goreng. Beef Rendang was labeled spicy and they do not play! It was borderline too spicy, but great that a place does spicy and it's actually spicy. The flavor was not lost even though it was spicy. Only con was the beef was on the dryer side. Chicken Satay, the sauce on the chicken was amazing. I could eat the sauce with white rice all day. Chicken was a bit dry. Value was there as well! I would say the portion size is about 1.25 to 1.5 in servings. We definitely had left overs. I'd say 4 stars for now. Love the vibe and the Food Hall feeling of this remodeled mall. Owners were so nice and love explaining their adventures of opening their restaurant. You order at an iPad stand when you walk in. Menu has pictures of the dishes with is nice and dishes come out spot on. The food! Great flavors of Bali! Indonesian food is a mix of Thai and Indian? It's delicious mix of spices, tons of flavor with a little (or a lot) of heat. We started with pork/veggie potstickers. Crispy and tasty. Then we had the chicken skewers, served with coconut rice, and some fresh veggies dressing the beautiful bamboo plate on a banana leaf! Our to-go box was brought to the table by the lovely owner/chef and she slid the banana leaf with leftovers straight into the box! Love it! My one issue, the skewers were white meat chicken chunks. They were over cooked. Dry even. I get it. Americans like white meat. They needed to be cooked less. Even better offer a dark meat option. But we will be back. What a disaster. Horrible service. You have to order from a kiosk or your phone and pay with a credit card. Ive been there twice...the first time i got had to order twice because the order didnt go through and checked later but was charged twice. Ordered drinks that I never got. This last time a 5.99 drink showed up pn my bill that i did not order as well as a. Administrative fee of 1.43 or so and a minimum tip of 3.56 that i could not change. This is currently only for the Bali Express side of things. I'll definitely be back to try out Fuego tacos! This dynamic duo is housed inside the former shell of a Johnny Rockets so it has nice lunch counter seating and diner style booths/tables. The decor is a little plain but they have plans to liven it up and make it feel less mono color. The staff for both sides of the venue were all friendly and hard at work making food and working on new creations for their menus. As a lover of Bali Express as a food truck I was very excited to see they already started expanding their menu. I brought a group with me to help welcome them on their soft opening. We ordered several items and shared family style. Among the favorites were the peanut butter wings, lumpia, pork satay and the orange chicken. We also tried their boba drinks which were new and they were solid! I'll definitely be back to try new Balinese cuisine and check out Fuego Tacos. So glad to have this restaurant in Carson City. Definitely an exciting new addition to the flavor palette. Very friendly owner(s) happy to walk you through ordering process. I have been twice, the second time there were 15 orders (3 groups) ahead of me so the kiosk took time and my order took 40 minutes (take out). I will order online next time, but if you want advice, going in is a good first experience. Highlights: Sambal and Lemongrass Chicken Surprise: The Tofu is breaded, which my wife did not appreciate Fresh fish - simple grilled fish with sauces on the side. I would have preferred something cooked or finished in a sauce so the taste was a little more integrated with the dish. She is from Bali, so her food is authentic. We started with the chicken and veggie lumpia. These are too die for. They are so flakey and everything inside is so fresh. A great sauce that comes with them. For the entree, we ordered the orange chicken with the Indonesian fried rice. The orange chicken was very good. A very mild sauce that we really enjoyed. The fried rice was very good also. A side of sambal for the hubby. He loves his spice. Go try this place for authentic food. And the sweetest restaurant co-owner . Great place to eat with authentic Asian flavors! Omg was thrilled to finally find a place with rich tasting food! Ordered the beef rendang and it not only met my expectations but surpassed it! To begin with, the place is really bright, and the decorations pop. The ordering system takes a little getting used to but I'm okay with that. e started with the pork pot stickers with veggies. Really fresh and tasted great. Then we ordered lemongrass chicken with yellow rice. At first, I thought the chicken was fine, nothing special, but what added the last star was how it tasted the next day. WOW! Rarely does a dish taste that much better the next day, but this dish did. Love that two of my favorite places are now in one fantastic spot together! While I have had both Fuego and Bali many times and love them both, this time we had one of the amazing steak and shrimp quesadillas which is not only flavorful, packed with meat and big enough to share it is served with the best mango habanero salsa ever! We decided on splitting a burrito Sunday after working out, dining at an odd time ~230pm. We were greeted by the kind Balinese folks, ordered from the Fuegos....super burrito with shredded beef, cheese and jalapeños grilled on the outside. Omg! So delicious and unusual. No extra salsa offered. 1 ginormous burrito and a Jamaica drink was almost $30. We ate, took 1/3 home for a 3rd meal (kid). But we did wait 40 minutes. What can I say, other than give me more Indonesian food! Food 4.5/5: I love so many of their dishes, The rengdang is awesome, some of the best I've ever had. The mei goreng is also really good and satisfying. But the chicken skewers tend to be a bit over cooked/dry, and the nasi goreng was a little underwhelming compared to other's I've had. Service 4/5: Mostly I don't really like the whole tablet ordering kiosk. I totally get it from a staffing perspective, but it makes service a little worse when I want to ask a question about something. With that said the staff is very friendly and attentive once you order. Ambiance 4.5/5: I love the remolded dinner vibe, but it's a work in progress still. I wanted to try the super burrito, ($16 inc tax), cause it seemed like it had more stuff in it than the regular burrito ($11) which had no guacamole, sour cream or cheese in it. Pretty expensive for a burrito, but it was loaded with stuff. If you're used to the street burrito that you pick up in your hands and eat from one end, this one is not like that. The filling is too much for the burrito to support, and will all fall apart if you try to eat it like this. Best to use a knife and fork. As you can see in the pics, there a lot of filling. This is definitely a rising star in the local food scene lacking absolutely nothing in the welcoming,friendly and genuine sincerity department as soon as you walk through the door you feel as though you've been immediately adopted into the family. The Lumpia...I cannot think of any I have enjoyed more than Bali Express's ,fresh,light & crispy inside and out. Shrimp tempura...I've had these a few times now and they are so good! Enough about apps. Today I tried the Ayam Geprik ,spicy sambol smashed chicken w/rice, very spicy (as advertised!) large portion, beautiful plate but it didn't hit all the marks for me & here's why,it was smashed into very small pieces & retained a lot dredge flour & oil from the cooking process and the flavor over all was sambol,isolating the meat by itself exposed it as fairly bland. The fresh cabbage,carrots and cucumbers are a refreshing garnish for this dish as it brings a caliber of HEAT you don't usually experience. The owner Barry and I discussed the food openly and honestly(including my lack of experience w/Indonesian food altogether)and he expressed their plans to introduce new equipment in order to do things like this particular dish on a flame grill instead of in the wok. The chef's husband was genuinely warm and welcoming. He spent a little time talking with us and shared her background, that she's a generational chef who learned family "secret" recipes passed down. Definitely could tell on the rich flavor of the food. Since it was our first visit, we ordered several dishes so we could try a wide selection. Every dish was excellent. The flavors were amazing and well-balanced, and the spice level was perfect, noticeable, but wasnt overpowering. We even ordered extra dish to take home. This place is not express at all!! It took over 40 minutes to get half of the order of my meal and then an additional 10 minutes to get the rest of the order. The first plate I got was chicken and rice, it took 40 minutes to get this, the chicken was cold not even warm and the rice was warm which was surprising since the chicken was cold. It took 50 minutes to get shrimp tempura chicken and rice and the place was not even busy. Not to mention they made and served food to someone who ordered after me. Service here sucks. It took 50 minutes to get my food, this is not an express place. The chow mein was actually very delicious but it should not have taken so long to get the food. The Indonesian food was A 8 out of 10 good flavors and served beautifully, The chicken skewers tasted great but a bit dry. Mexican food was very slow to get to the table and the street tacos were almost to big and felt more like a pile of meat inside a tortilla that was soggy and you couldn't pick it up and eat it we had to use forks. Keep in mind there is not great service and it's very casual like a food court, if you order from both restaurants do not expect your food to come out at the same time or even close we finished out Indonesia food before the tacos showed up.
