My own puss cat was going to have teeth taken out so I thought I would try and get him things to cheer him up and went in. Couldn't have been happier with the service and advice and neither could jasper!! We never thought catnip worked on our boy, so the lovely lady gave me two teabags to try and i bought some lovely treats for him and a catnip pillow. Jaspue had drooled and torn the first teabag within nanoseconds and merrily attacked and slavered the pillow untill he was sure it was dead and the went on to beat up the dog! Sore mouth forgotten!! Will definatley be back to get some other varieties of loose nip.

He's currently sitting next to me, snoring his head off. I defy anyone not to get a tear in their eye as they look at all the rescued cats in their pens. Its' nice to see that there are still people who will give up their time, free of charge, to give these little animals as good a life as possible.

I currently cohabitate my flat with a lovely cat called Pandora. I owe it all to Lothian Cat…read moreRescue. Situated just outside of town in Bonnyrigg Lothian Cat Rescue runs a substantial service for rescuing kittens and older cats from unsafe or abusive environments, and does its very best to rehouse them. Lothian Cat Rescue is a charity and is run by volunteers. They have a small charity shop on Easter Road near Leith Walk in Edinburgh which hopefully raises a small amount for the ever costly upkeep. They do charge a small amount for rehousing but this is a more of a gesture to show you care enough and can afford to take care of the animal. Before visiting you should call them up, tell them what you're looking for (e.g. older cat, a cat that gets on with children etc.) They will ask you to come in and view the cats which are all housed in pens and receive regular daily attention. The staff will ask you questions about where you live and what your environment is like, this can seem a bit interrogation like, but I really respect the care and consideration they take into the future of their temporary guests. My girlfriend actually volunteers here, and can say from experience what a great service they provide behind the scenes. The regular feeding, attention, vet visits etc., which all come out of the rescue centre's pocket. They receive cats constantly, and there is a high turn around (they do their utmost to never put a cat down) yet they still offer very considerate attention to each individual. I really respect any people or organisation that goes out of its way to help animals, especially volunteers. So often, these charities face funding problems and are less well received than more "vital charities". Being a big cat fan aside, I have to disagree and think this job is just as necessary! Keep up the good work Lothian Cat Rescue!

What they do sell though, is bric a brac, books, clothes and anything that the good people of Edinburgh have donated, all in aid of helping them poor little defenceless kittys. They will even uplift stuff if you can't be bothered or simply can't take it down yourself, by calling 0131 661 3411 and asking for an uplift. A good cause, so chuck a bag or two of your unwanted things to the rescue charity shop because it would be much appreciated, or pop in and buy a book or two for bargain prices.

The Cat rescue have a lovely well equipped cattery where they catter for a range of cats well and unwell, short stay or long stay. I got my 2 kittens here in the summer , after moving out of my parents I missed my feline friends and Lothian cat rescue were great they gave me lots of advice as well as asking questions to make sure i was going to be a good cat owner. They want to make sure the cats have good homes. Each cat usually costs£40 or more if you wish to donate extra, I think this is reasonable as the cats get full health check, wormed,de-flea'd and spayed/neutered before being re homed.

Such a tiny little soldier, we picked him from his home filled with so many other hamsters. A nice member of stuff took as around the store pointing out things we needed. Who knew a hamster needed so much crap? Clearly it's all a big sales pitch, because if you don't go along with it and buy everything she tells you to then you look like a cruel potential pet owner. The store is pretty big selling just about anything you need for your pet and more. It gets a little extreme in some cases, like how many different types of dog biscuits can it be? I like to look at the animals (rabbits, hamsters, mice and guinea pigs). There is a special section at the back for the eh... special animals which you can ''adopt''. I have never quite understood why they need their own section but I always feel sorry for them.
