Would have given no stars if I could have!!!
Here's my story.
I called the Edinburgh Cat Protection League on Fri 2nd Sep 2011, as there had been a stray cat in my friend's neighbour hood for 3+ weeks and we had noticed a deterioration in the cat's health.
I asked if we could bring the cat to the CPL on Sat 3rd Sep 2011 and was told, yes that was fine.
On Sat 3rd Sep 2011, my friend and I managed to get the cat into a cat carrier and I drove down to the CPL to drop the cat off.
Upon arriving at the premises, I was told that I couldn't leave the cat as they 'don't take cats in on the weekend' and that no one would have told me to bring the cat down(basically calling me a liar) as they had an out break of cat flu, at this point it was suggested I try the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home instead.
I drove along to the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home (by this time the poor cat had soiled itself in the back of my car), but was told that they too had an out break of cat flu and could not take the cat either. At the EDCH, I was given the number of the SSPCA and told to try them, they also supplied me with some towels to clean the cat up. I drove a little towards the direction of the SSPCA and stopped by the side of the road to try and call them first, at this point the battery on my phone died.
I decided to go back to the CPL and ask again if there was no possible way they could take the cat, as the poor thing was in the back of my car covered in diarrhoea and clearly distressed.
When I arrived back at the CPL, the same member of staff opened the door and rolled her eyes before I had even spoken. I pleaded with her to take the cat, explaining that it had soiled itself and the ECDH wouldn't take it either. Her response was, roll of eyes Can you not keep the cat? I explained that I have a dog and that he doesn't like cats, her response well can you not just keep the cat in another room and then try back next week?, again I explained that no this was not possible as my dog (and the cat) would become distressed if I were to do that. I then asked if it would be possible for me to use their telephone to call the SSPCA, explaining that my phone had died, her response was roll of the eyes, for God sake (under her breath), wait there shuts door on me. When she came back to the door, she handed me the phone and I tried calling the SSPCA, the number unfortunately went straight to voice mail. I handed her the phone back saying It's going straight to voice mail, if I can't get him into any of the shelters, I'll have to let him go in the street again, she replied Oh just do what you like! and slammed the door in my face. I was then left standing on the door step of this so called 'animal welfare charity' crying, with a sick stray cat sitting in my car.
A more positive and helpful approach, surely would have been to advise me of any animal fosterers in the area, who could have taken the cat until the flu danger had subsided? read more
