Very impressed. I was in the area early and this was the only place around (besides fast food) that was open for breakfast. The restaurant was very quiet and comfortable. Spotlessly clean! Real cloth napkins and nice heavy silverware were another nice touch. Hard to find those any more, even in upscale restaurants. My food was fresh and very well made. I had the Baleadas La Express Supreme breakfast which was two big breakfast tacos with steak, egg, cheese, avocado, crema, etc. Very filling, stick-to-your-ribs kind of food. The flour tortillas were thick and flaky. The rest of the ingredients were excellent as well. I wanted to get some plantains (I love plantains!) but I was too full to eat another bite. The servers and staff were friendly. My coffee cup never got empty. My food came out quickly. It was a little pricey for a breakfast, but it was worth it for the excellent food and the cultural experience with it. No complaints at all. Highly recommended. I will surely be coming back to try some of the other items on the menu. read more

Sooooo good! They are consistently delicious and authentic. This is the spot for Honduran food yumminess. And they do great takeout. We got the Pescado Frito (fried fish) and it was a whole entire fish. The Tamales are always prepared well. The Tacos Honduras have a delicious slaw and are crunchy perfection. And the Ceviche though. You can get it with fish or shrimp. (Ceviche con Pescado o Camarones). Get it un poquito picante (a lil bit spicy). They have all these chopped tiny jalapeños in it. So fresh and flavorful We get it through the drive through but call and order ahead of time if you do because the ceviche con camarones is prepared fresh and takes 15 minutes to cure. Normally when I have a bad experience at a restaurant, I like to visit and give them another chance. My experience here was so disappointing that when I pulled into the parking lot to try it again today, I couldn't bring myself to go in. After seeing all the positive reviews on Yelp, I decided to give Baleadas Express a try one day for lunch. The restaurant was around 3/4 full which I took as a good sign. Little did I know I would be in for an awful experience. Service was horrible. From the moment we walked in, it was as if things moved in slow motion. Ordering took far too long, but the delivery of our food and check really soured me on the place. My order consisted of a kid's chicken tenders, Cuban sandwich and one of their breakfast dishes. Nearly an hour later the chicken and Cuban sandwich arrived, but the breakfast dish was nowhere to be found. Considering the time it took to make a simple Cuban sandwich, I figured maybe the other dish took a really long time. Around 15 minutes later, I was able to get the server's attention. He had never brought napkins or utensils, plus he seemed confused by my questions about the missing dish. Thoroughly frustrated, I asked for the check. Waiting for that took even longer, bringing my total time at the restaurant to nearly two hours. Making matters worse was the food. My Cuban sandwich was just not good. Maybe I made an error ordering a Cuban sandwich in a Honduran restaurant, but I love Cuban sandwiches. This version seemed completely different from what I'm used to and was dry and bland. The fries that accompanied it, and the kids meal, were grocery store type curly fries. They were awful. I'm guessing the addition of the Cuban sandwich and items like po-boys are an attempt to cater to local tastes. If the food was the only downfall, I would gladly go back and order more adventurously. But the food coupled with the poor service make me very reluctant to ever return. read more

Here to once again thank Yelp for an amazing find. Baleadas Express is off the beaten path which is odd for Covington because pretty much everything there is to offer is on or visible from 190 or in the downtown section. This place is back behind the Home Depot near the La-Z-Boy furniture store in the far corner of a strip mall. Wow. This Honduran food is delicious and made super fresh to order. Each item came out piping hot and handmade. You're not getting frozen junk here! The plating for each item was absolutely gorgeous and the flavors on point. A true feast for the eyes and mouth. Baleadas has an extensive bilingual menu that is on offer all day, including a breakfast section that has some interesting dishes. Hot Honduran coffee is available all day as well. If you can't find something here to eat I feel sorry for you. I'll let the pictures I've taken speak for themselves. I've been here a few times and every time I get more and more familiar with the menu. It doesn't hurt that last time I went with my friend who is fluent in Spanish! For this trip we ordered the following: 1) Tostones Mixto (twice fried plantain) which comes with refried beans, honduras cream (sort of like a sour cream) and cheese. These are delicious with the savory dipping sauces! I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them! 2) Baladeas Supreme - which is sort of like a huge quesadilla filled with eggs, cheese, honduras cream, beans, and steak. The HOMEMADE tortilla they put everything in is the best part. This, my friends, is buttery, soft, and so delicious. Don't confuse my expression of a quesadilla too much, because it's not filled with shredded cheese. It's more of a crumbled cheese with the insides. SO, SO, SO good. And REALLY reasonably priced. For $5.49 ($3.49 for the basic baladeas) you get an enormous portion and when I brought my boyfriend here for breakfast a few days later we didn't even finish our own baladeas! 3) Pastelitos Hondurenos - ground beef pies with salsa, cabbage, cheese on the side. These were amazing as well. We shared everything this go round and I was pleased with everything we ordered! The only negative to this place is the time and maybe a little language barrier if the owner isn't there. Everything is homemade, you're not getting any frozen foods here. So expect to wait some, and don't come on a 30 minute lunch break! read more

This hidden little jewel is located in a strip mall amazingly enough the food was surprisingly delicious! Authentic Central American food! Very clean restaurant amiable sweet owners. I never review a restaurant until I've eaten there at least twice, just to check for consistency. Now that I've tried Baleadas Express at different times, I can say this...no matter what time of day, or what is ordered...consistently delicious!!! I can't tell you how many times I've passed by this place and never went inside. I always thought "one day I'm going to try that. Honduran food- I wonder what that's like?" Don't be like me. Go inside. Try it. It's like getting a giant hug inside your stomach. That is what Honduran food is, apparently. Love made edible. Who knew? The menu does have English subtitles :), so you'll know what's what. Honestly, everything I've tried has been exceptionally good. Pupusas, shrimp tacos, fried chicken, and the Honduran Tamales ...well, I just don't have the words for that tamale. It is like no latin food I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and just get one. If I were a betting person, my money would be on you ordering more to take home for later. It's just so different from Mexican tamales! Yum. In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to admit that I made the very gringo mistake of mentally lumping all latin food together in the Mexican food category. If you're thinking that same thought, please stop! This Honduran food is nothing like it! The whole flavor profile is different. Really, I have no idea why this place is rated so highly unless the owners friends are doing the rating. Food was just ok and frankly fairly bland. I asked the wait staff if she recommended the pork or chicken tamale because we wanted to try it. I told her that our table wanted to try it. She said pork and then I said we'd go with her recommendation and I asked how many tamales were in an order for $3 and she said one, so I ordered three. We ordered our meals at the same time as the tamales, so there was no confusion on her part that we were just ordering tamales. The tamales are big and for us all to try it, we could have easily ordered one to share but she didn't mention that. She asked if we wanted the tamales out first and we said yes. Tamales were delivered and not two minutes later came the rest of the food. As for the food, the pork tamale(S!) were fine. The pork on the inside is a hunk of pork, not shredded but it falls apart easily. I'd have liked mine better except the pork was cold in the middle. Surrounding cornmeal is thick but tasty. There were three of us at lunch and we ordered the Mexican Tacos, the Honduran Tacos and the Cuban Sandwich. Cuban Sandwich was good. Served without fries. Mexican Tacos were not bad, almost good but not enough to order them again. The green sauce that came with them was very tasty. They were generous with the cilantro and the onion. The Honduran Tacos were good, but the ratio of chicken to fried tortilla was off. The person who had this had a few bites then unrolled it to get to the chicken. Great food from a welcoming family-run business. We ordered the Honduran tacos and chicken tamales. The tacos definitely have that Honduran twist to them with rolled up fried flour tortillas with chicken inside, slivers of pickled onions and Mexican cheese, and a really delicious salsa. Of course, had to order the Baleadas Supreme as well...also delicious, full of flavor, and meat was well cooked. Oh, and don't think I slept on the tamales! It was such a full bodied Honduran style tamale with vegetables and moist chicken, wrapped in a banana leaf. Fragrant and savory. Will definitely be back! read more

The people that took my order deserve 5 stars because they were very nice so that one star is just for the food. I was born and raised here in the US but my was born and raised Honduras, so I was raised on both the traditional Louisiana cuisine and the Honduran Cuisine..... plus I actually lived in Honduras for a few years when I was a kid, so I know the food very well and I love it!!! Sadly something has changed for the worst at this place, I have no idea what happened all I know is that my husband and I use to go eat here from time to time a while back and the food was really good as a matter of fact I'm actually replacing my 5 star yelp review from a few years ago with this one because those 5 stars no longer apply to the food they're serving now...Last week I ordered "Sopa de caracol" which is a very traditional Conch soup made in Honduras, 2 Honduran enchiladas, 2 Honduran tacos and a beef baleada, I went from there straight home a 3-4 minute drive if that, my husband and I were both hungry and ready to eat, plus I was really looking forward to eating some good Honduran food, so as soon as I got home we started to eat, the soup was barely warm it was actually on the colder side of warm, so I reheated it unfortunately it consisted of 1 piece of yuca that was either a not so fresh Yuca or it wasn't properly cooked because it was hard (it should be as soft as a well cooked potato a different consistency but just as soft) it had one piece of plantain which I can not critique because I don't like plantains that are not fried so I never eat it and my husband didn't taste it either) as for the Conch, if I were to guess, it might of had a 1/3 of a cup of sliced conch which is far less than what is traditionally served but that wasn't nearly as disappointing as the rest. The baleada was barely warm and also had very little meat and considering that in English it would be called a roasted beef baleada it was very disappointing that beef wasn't even almost its main ingredient, it literally had the equivalent of two fajita strips if that. If I was asked to name it, I would name it a bean and scrambled eggs, with 2 thin slices of beef baleada , it most certainly wasn't anything like what they used to serve but the very worst and actually embarrassing for someone like me who knows what it should be like, were the tacos and the enchiladas...Enchiladas are a supposed to be made with a flat fried corn tortilla topped with seasoned ground beef, freshly seasoned, crisp cabbage or lettuce, a slice of tomato, shredded or crumbled white Honduran cheese, a slice or two of hard boiled eggs and a seasoned tomato sauce but what we got was a not so fresh fried tortilla, topped with unseasoned ground beef (ZERO taste) I don't think they even bothered adding salt much less anything else, a glob of a cabbage salad that had to have been marinating in vinegar, oil and beats for hours if not days because it was very purple (which in all fairness, cabbage, oils vinegar, salt and beats is also a common Honduran salad which is good with other types of food, not enchiladas, pupusas or Honduran tacos!!!) Anyway, it was so bad, we honestly threw away and whole enchilada and 3/4 of the other one because it was impossible to eat and believe it or not, that still wasn't the worst of what we ordered...The very worst were the Honduran Tacos....they literally tasted like they had been sitting under a heat lamp all day long, the kind they use to keep the hotdogs warm at gas stations and if it was, they must have turned off the heating lamps hours before it was served to us because they weren't even a little warm, they were cold, stale, hard and chewy at the same time, I literally had to spit out the one bite I took from one of them and told my husband not to bother tasting it because not only was it hard, cold and stale, it also had that non seasoned ground beef that was on the enchiladas and it was also topped with more of that purple over marinated cabbage salad, it was just disgusting. So I went ahead and spent another $40.00 on sushi and decided that as much as it saddens me, we won't be back unless I find out it's under a different management/owner or their chef was retrained to cook Honduran food not just whatever he or she feels like throwing together to get the day over and done with. It was the worst $50.00 I've spent in a very long time and I'm beyond disappointed because as far as I know, they are the only Honduran restaurant on the Northshore and they're seriously putting Honduran Cuisine to shame. So please, if anyone who knows what great Honduran Cuisine should taste like, reads this review in the future and thinks something has changed for the best, please leave me a comment because I'm more than willing to give it another try. Excellent Honduran home cooking. I been a fan of Baleads for several years now. The home made tamales are fantastic, a good Cuban sandwich. Oddly, chop suey is on the menu, which is delicious and my wife is a fan of their liver and onions. During lunch time they do a huge amount of to go business, sometimes this lends to less than great service if you are dinning in, with the owner or usually singular server being tied up on the phone or at the register. My friend and I stumbled across this place when the restaurant we were intending to go to was closed tonight, and we are both so thrilled to have found it! We were both beyond impressed! The waitstaff was polite and offered suggestions. I went with Honduran tacos, and I LOVED them! They were beautifully plated, and I regret diving in before photographing them, truly. The rolled shells were perfectly crunchy, holding up to the delicious sauce. The chicken and spices inside were flavorful, but not too spicy. The sweet onions and cabbage on top balanced it all out so well. My friend ordered meat pies and fried green plantains, and it was as equally as savory! Baliadas are "ok", the older woman who took my order was rude. I asked for fried plantains and she brought me what looked like a greasy burnt banana with some beans and cream. When I told her politely that this wasn't what I wanted she rudely said" you need to know what you're asking for next time because this is plantains! You want crispy like French frys?!" I even pointed at the picture when I placed my order to make sure she knew what I wanted. Not to mention my husband is from Honduras. He even told her in Spanish. Never again! Delicious and favorably-priced! This little Meso-American gem is hidden in a strip mall behind the Home Depot in the outer, big-box/strip-mall reaches of Covington. I had something that was beef and potatoes in a corn pocket. It was kind of like a Meso-American calzone and tasty. The staff was very friendly and the place was nice and clean. I have to make a list of places that you can have an excellent lunch at on the Northshore for not much more than fast food. Baleadas would be on it.
