What a little cute gem in Dufur, OR! Bf came down to Columbia river fishing for the weekend and we stayed at this place and it's just sooo cute! Friendly staff like Debra was able to accommodate us for a late arrival, she got our dinner pre-ordered and ready for us when we checked in. Declines and healthy food menu. Quaint backyard where you can read and relax and enjoy the day. I did a reflex feet service with co owner Claire and it was a pleasant experience. Essential oil with feet massage. Why pay $200 at a chain like bestwestern in town when you could support local business who provide great service in an antique hotel. Claire is also an artist who has a lot of paintings on the wall. So unique and creative with such personal touch. I highly recommend this place if you are on a romantic retreat or a getaway for the weekend with girlfriends.

I read some of the slightly negative reviews of The Balch and I had to laugh..."honey is an animal by-product and not Vegan". Hilarious! If having honey added to their oatmeal when a guest has chosen to restrict "insect by-products" from their diet is the biggest complaint here, you can guess just how nice this hotel really is. Well, more of an inn than a hotel, The Balch was built in 1907. So, yes, it's creaky and sounds can be heard throughout, as are all old buildings and hotels. Have you stayed at The Edgefield in Troutdale? Kind of similar here. But, and to address another person's complaint, ear plugs are provided at your bedside. The Balch has 18 rooms, a spa, indoor and outdoor sitting areas, and a place to eat. Many of the rooms are very basic with just a queen sized bed. Some of these rooms have a sink in the corner. Bathrooms are shared and there are several individual bathrooms in each hallway. There seems to be about one bathroom for every 2-3 rooms. Another 4 or so rooms have their own full bathrooms (some with clawfoot tubs), and their is one King suite with a jet tub. In talking to one of the employees, The Balch is moving away from primarily hosting events like weddings (even though they do still do them) and towards a more full service, year round, classic style inn destination. Overall, this place is a hidden gem nestled in the sleepy town of Dufur. The Balch has unique charms and great views of Mt Hood and the surrounding rolling wheat fields. I came away from this one night stay with my wife feeling very relaxed and rejuvenated. I can't wait to come back.

What an amazing place! A restored Historic Hotel in Dufur, Or. The service was amazing and the price was well below the chains and was much nicer. We first saw the Balch Hotel last year, May 2012 and we were impressed. They were still, although nearly finished, in the midst of the restoration. It was beautiful. Breakfast comes with your stay and there is coffee/tea/malted Hot Cocoa available as self service. The dining room is large and inviting. The Patio is even better! The rooms have bathrooms or share a hallway bathroom. The rooms on the the North East corner have the most spectacular view of Mt. Hood. Just breathtaking. We arrived about 9pm and were greeted by Denise. She was so helpful, showing us our room and explaining that the front door is unlocked so you can leave or return at your leisure. She also let us know that they had some desserts available. That night it was a luscious brownie with ice cream on the side if you wanted or apple pie. This didn't look like your average apple pie. You could tell the crust was amazing and home made and with love. Coffee was ready at 8:10 and breakfast at 9. It's made fresh each morning. When we were there the breakfast included a fruit and yogurt parfait followed by eggs scrambled with bacon over home potatoes and a Mexican Cinnamon Roll. They accommodated our dairy free friend by substituting the cinnamon roll with a lovely apple muffin. Weddings are their speciality and the grounds would make for a fantastic wedding or reception. The photos of events they have are just stunning. This was one our best hotel experiences ever. We will definitely return next May for the Oregon Trail Rally, 2014, if not sooner.

The lodge sits on a 72 acre orchard, which also includes some farm lands that houses a couple of Alpaca and a bunch of sheep's. There were the three of us for 4th of July weekend and we booked the Mt. Hood room, and the River room. Both rooms are next to each other and had a patio with a picturesque view of Mount Hood. Both rooms had very comfortable beds, and all the amenities you need. Coffee, WiFi, towel, popcorn, glassware, shower amenities, and the best of all, heated floors in the bathrooms! Price per night rate comes with breakfast, and let me tell you! Breakfast was AMAZING! I actually was looking forward to breakfast every morning. It wasn't just the same skimpy toast, eggs and bacon kind of breakfast, but it was a nutritious and filling breakfast menu that changes every morning! It definitely filled me up until dinner time! Overall I recommend this place if you want a gorgeous, serene, and picturesque getaway! I felt at peace when I returned home. PS: Oscar the farm cat! Very friendly and will greet you every morning!

Sakura Ridge provided a very comfortable stay with everything that we needed to unplug and relax. There were many small details that we appreciated- a beautifully designed and very clean room, comfortable bed and sheets, heated floors, snacks and drinks in the common area (hot cocoa, tea, soda, popcorn), and guidebooks, cookbooks, and maps for guests. The breakfasts were delicious and carefully prepared by Deanna. We had fresh lamb sausage, cherry tomato and goat cheese tart, scrambled eggs with chives, and sorrel salad. The second day, we had a cream cheese omelette, ham wrapped asparagus, and fresh blueberry scone. Deanna also made a berry smoothie both mornings. John was very kind and taught my husband how to feed their lambs on the second morning. We met him at 8am and my husband got to feed 3 lambs at one time! I have to say, it was a unique and fun experience. We stayed in the Orchard Room, which was great. It was built as an addition in 2007, so it has a separate entrance and felt very private. The bathroom was well appointed with a marble walk-in shower and soaking tub. We had a private balcony overlooking the chickens and lambs on the farm, and it offered an AMAZING view of Mt. Hood. One of the best things about Sakura Ridge is that it's situated on a farm with animals (lambs and chickens) and fruits (pears, apples, peaches, plums, and berries) and vegetables. We highly recommend staying here and would love to return in the summer.

We loved the beautiful grounds, and the chalet was comfortable and exactly what we were hoping for. Unfortunately, around 1:00 a.m. on the second to last night of our stay, we returned from the wedding festivities to find that the entire chalet smelled overwhelmingly of sewage. The odor was present throughout all three floors and became stronger with each level. It was so intense that several of us were gagging and even became physically sick. We attempted to book a room at the nearest hotel but they were fully booked, leaving us with no choice but to stay. We opened every window in the chalet and had to leave them open for the remainder of our stay because the smell was otherwise unbearable. We made every effort to report the issue while it was happening. That night, we called the resort's emergency after hours hotline but never received a return call or any follow up. Upon checking out on the final day, I reported the situation again to the staff member at the front desk. He was incredibly kind, apologetic, and assured me the situation was unacceptable. He explained that the manager, Dan, would contact me and that a partial refund would likely be appropriate given the circumstances. After several days passed without any communication, I reached out to the resort myself. I was told that maintenance had inspected the chalet, along with neighboring units, and could not detect any unusual odor. While I appreciate that they took the concern seriously enough to inspect the property, this was very surprising given that all four of us experienced the smell, and it was severe enough that we were becoming physically ill. I was again told that Dan would contact me, but as of writing this review, I still have not received any phone call or email. It's disappointing because, aside from this issue, our stay would have easily earned five stars. I understand that unexpected maintenance problems can happen and I don't fault the resort for an issue that may have been outside their immediate control. What disappointed me most was the lack of follow through after we were assured someone would reach out. Good customer service isn't just responding in the moment--it's also following through on the commitments made afterward. I genuinely hope the source of the odor has been identified and resolved, as it's a beautiful property and I'd love to recommend it. However, I also hope future guests experiencing an issue like this receive the communication and resolution that we unfortunately never did.
