I visited this winery with my traveling companions during my trip to Walla Walla. The visit to this winery was partly business for one of my traveling companions. We met with the owner/winemaker Tom and his business partner Kent here. We had lunch and afterwards toured the facility and had barrel and current release tasting. NOTE: This visit was under special circumstances, the winery does not provide food service. The winery and grounds were adorable and quaint. It has such an inviting feel! Upon arrival, we were greeted by the winery dogs. I believe there were four of them. They roam around inside the tasting room and outside unleashed so if your dog does not play well with others, you may not want to bring them here. We visited four wineries/tasting rooms during this trip and Balboa was the highlight of the trip. I really enjoyed the meal Tom prepared and the wines he chose to pair with. The tour of the facility and the barrel/current release tasting was truly an amazing experience. If I were ever in Walla Walla again, this would be the place I'd visit for wine. We attended a Holistic House Party sponsored by YELP and Balboa was the wine sponsor. The pourers were so nice, they let us try a few a second time. I knew I loved their reds after the first try but I hung around to get more. And why not? If was there for the asking. In getting to talk to these gals, we found out that Walla Walla has a huge wine country and make award winning wines. Went into our Walla Walla trip totally inexperienced with wine tastings, but Brittany was kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Since my boyfriend was driving she let us share tastes. I don't normally enjoy blends but both the red and white Miths (named for owners Mike and Tom) were bomb! We ended up settling on the Destiny wine, originally crafted for the team at Bungie. It's great stuff, and even though it wasn't on the tasting menu Brittany opened a bottle for us to sample-- then sold us one she hadn't opened! "Dog friendly place" with many unfriendly dogs off leash . It's my 1st time in Walla Walla as a Malbec lovers we choose Balboa for being dog friendly and making the type of wine we like . From our car we were impressed seeing all the dogs unleashed outside and we though this would be a great experience, but as soon we got out of the car with our leashed dog one of the dogs snapped at our dog. I decided to go inside the wine room to ask the best way to keep all the dogs happy outside. I was a few steps from the door when two dogs walked in my direction literally blocking my way and growling to me. I tried some dogs command to keep them calm but didn't work after few mins trying my husband who had our dog leashed all the time and I decided to leave . The only employee we saw at the place never came outside even to greet, warn or apologies for the dogs behavior . Also, we had a hard time to leave the place because 3 dogs tried to " chase"our car, my husband carefully drove out to avoid the dogs who were trying to heard our car. Unfortunately we didn't have chance to try the wine. Tip : Being a pet lover doesn't make your dogs friendly or your business . Please be aware your customers about your pets behavior towards other dogs to avoid feature liability issues . read more

This winery has some of the best reds we have had in a long while. Their 2014 Malbec was the best and the price was really great for a 2014 wine. Also their 2016 Merlot was really nice as well. Tom the owner was great chatting with as well and great knowledge of wine. We will for sure always visit Balboa on our trips to Walla Walla. Thanks a lot for the awesome experience Balboa Team! All wineries should follow after Balboa and not release their wines so young. It was great to have those nicely aged wines and they will cellar nicely for many more years as well. read more

After having their red blend at the Metropolitan Grill (Seattle) this tasting/visit went on my bucket list as a destination. We were not disappointed. One of the friendliest winery owners in Walla Walla make this a must stop visit on a wine tour of the area! Tom's great sense of humor had my group of 20 in stitches! His wife is an artist and the wine tasting room is graced with her beautiful artwork. Tom is also the wine maker for Beresan, literally a stone's throw away. I will agree with the previous reviews about a really weird pet-policy. Our entire wine tasting experience at this winery was absolutely ruined. While I understand that such facilities like wine tasting rooms may ask visitors with dogs to leave, I still don't understand the really weird approach with this "at your own risk" mentioned somewhere on their website. First of all, I don't research on the wineries websites for particular pet-policies. Second, I wonder why the winery managers / owners don't put the sign "beware of dogs" on the entrance of the winery facility to let people with dogs know in advance that winery dogs are aggressive and can bite. Third, I don't understand why not to put their dogs in the kennel during the visiting hours? They say they have 7 dogs at the winery. Are these dogs aggressive to just other dogs or to people as well?.. Me and my dog were attracted aggressively twice by the dogs living at the winery. I don't recall that winery employees apologized or something just to be nice. It was quite the opposite. The winery employee took time to explain me why I am wrong bringing my dog to the winery. Also, when we still put our dog in the car and locked it, the tasting still didn't go well. I wasn't given a wine list of the tasting, the employees didn't even try to be nice, we were ignored during all tasting. I guess it's because I brought my dog to their winery. Anyways, in the end of the day, it's not a big deal, really just 10 dollars for a tasting. I just feel somehow annoyed that other people are complaining about this issue with dogs, and the winery owners still ignore these comments. read more

I want to echo the review below about the dogs and unfriendly/indifferent staff. We brought our leashed, tiny, extremely docile puppy to the winery and three dogs immediately sprinted over to us and attacked her - within seconds of us parking. We (two adults) managed to chase the dogs away, but no one from the winery even bothered to see if we were okay. The owner in reply to a review below said coming to the winery was "at your own risk." Okay, sure, but this is also an open-to-the-public business (not just a farm, yo!) and we didn't see any signs warning us, which it really should have given this is a common incident here because of the property's aggressive dogs. In short - stay away if you have a dog and/or care about dogs and/or believe in decent customer service. I regret coming here and I hope this place gets sued. read more

Balboa and Beresan share a property so we wandered into both. The tasting room host at Balboa was friendly and excited to share her knowledge of the wines. We enjoyed our experience there. It's interesting knowing both wineries have the same winemaker and yet there is definitely a different style in the wines. I'm always pleased when a winery pulls out an extra wine or two to compare vintages, in this case an older Syrah to compare with the newer one. read more

Balboa and Beresan were our favorite stops on a weekend tasting with old friends from college. The campus is warm and welcoming with lots of adorable pups running about. I've never been to the winery but one of the owners stayed at the hotel adjacent to the bar I work at. He gave me a bottle of Balboa as a tip for letting him use my wine key to open a bottle for himself. When we visited Walla Walla in the fall, we missed Balboa Winery. Fortunately we had the opportunity to taste a couple of their wines at a recent event in PDX. Balboa's 2008 Columbia Valley Sangiovese was quite good and we liked their 2008 Walla Walla Valley Tempranillo even better! Very nice fruity flavor with a chalky, chocolate finish. Yum! read more

My wife and I, and two other couples, visited Balboa for the second time the beginning of October 2017. You might wonder why I took so long to write a review? Well, a) I am not a regular critic on Yelp that feels the need to write about every establishment I visit personally and professionally unless I believe it's really important I offer my feedback, good or bad, and b) we were all so disappointed that I felt like I needed to provide feedback in hopes the management can re-capture the great vibe and service we had on our original visit last year. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon and the volume of guests was light inside the tasting room, so we didn't think we were putting much pressure on the staff with 6 guests. However we were told with a negative attitude that we were considered a large group and would need to fend for ourselves because we hadn't called ahead. We have visited hundreds of wineries with our Framily and have never been told we need a reservation, unless we were scheduling a private tasting or a special meal. So we didn't crowd the counter inside, and went out onto the patio. Each time we approached the counter for the next tasting for ourselves, we were asked directly which wine we were on and given absolutely no description or insight to the vintage. The ladies behind the counter could care less whether we purchased a bottle of wine, or a case like we had done at previous stops that day, and simply wanted to collect a tasting fee. Several of the employees walked past our table and never asked if we were doing okay or needed anything; they appeared to be more worried about taking care of the puppy in the back room or simply passing the time away (yes, we confirmed they were the same employees at the tasting counter). Disappointing to say the least, and although this is not the proper site to critique the wine, the quality of their product was reflective of their service. Out driver indicated they had been purchased by another winery, but I can't offer a pass to anyone who doesn't take pride in their product and care for the customers who are there to purchase their wine. read more

My Wife and I drove out to enjoy the Wines at Balboa. Wife tasted Mith at a Wine Festival in Kirkland, WA. She loved it and this was a stop we could not miss. We were greeted at the door by the Owners and they were Welcoming and amazed us with their passion for their Wines. It was a pleasure to talk with them and taste superb memorable Wines. My Wife got her bottle she wanted and this is a place to be visited. Well worth the short trip outside of Walla Walla, very short, and there are others to visit as well, but this is a Don't Miss. read more

Went to Walla Walla for a wine tasting-bachelorette party and Balboa was one of the wineries we were looking forward to. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the wine was spectacular and the person helping pour the wine (I think they called him Squid) was super professional. It was overall a nice experience until the end. Amy, who I believe was the wine manager, came over to our table and very awkwardly and rudely asked us to leave. She said they were closing up and she wanted to send her staff home, which I totally understand but there are soooo many other ways to ask your customers to leave and she was just plain rude. We were going to buy a case of wine for the wedding but after the awkward experience she created we didn't want to buy anything. She proceeded to swipe the bride's card and assumed she was paying for everyone's tasting (which she wasn't) and then didn't apologize. She said "Thanks." and walked away without any kind of customer service like "Have a great day" or "thanks for coming". I don't think I'll be coming back to this winery after that experience.
