I know I've written a review for this place. This was supposed to be an update. We experience all emotions on our last visit, and I wanted to share so others can experience this. They have great scones. This is always what we order here. They have cranberry, buckwheat and a special blueberry cream version. We stopped by after eating at GIGI's, to get a scone. There were only buckwheat, that's not our fav. We were hear for cranberry. It's the best. We were about to leave, with sad looks on our face. I figured I'd just ask... you never know. The person behind the counter said they would check, it might be a long time if they are baking. Fingers crossed! We had some hope... but really I didn't think they had any. The person came back and said, YES we have them. They are fresh out of the oven!!! OMG From sadness, to hope, to surprise happiness. But then we tasted one in the car. I don't think I can go back to just buying room temp scones anymore. I'd really like to sign up for the hot scone club. Any scone fans out there need to try this. It was so delicious! read more

Stopped in for a quick pastry and ended up with the most amazing rhubarb cream pastry I'm still thinking about. The dough was light, crisp, and perfectly delicate, and the rhubarb was the true star--tart but beautifully balanced, not overwhelming at all. I went mid-morning, and it was fresh, not sitting around, which made a big difference. I honestly wish I had grabbed a second one, but my waistline politely voted no. read more

Busy yummy coffee spot with solid pastries. I tried the breakfast sandwich which had egg, bacon and cheese. It was good but nothing super special and pretty standard. I don't shop at this bakery often as I live out of state. There are so many great reviews, so I keep giving this bakery a try. This was my 3rd time here: Pros: Their sourdough bread was good when I tried a few months ago. Nice atmosphere Decent service Cons: A few pastries of theirs I have tried in the past fell short for me. Just didn't taste good. Either too greasy, or the taste was off. Cranberry Almond scone, recently purchased, fell short for me. Way too dense and too sweet. It would make a decent cookie. Buckwheat and seed scone also fell short. Way too dense and dry, too sweet. Also would make a decent cookie. Scones are supposed to be dense, but not as dense and not as sweet. At least the traditional scones. Lemon poppy seed rugelach was not good. It had a hint of rancidity and bitterness from poppyseeds. Poppy seeds taste bitter when they are either incorrectly processed or improperly stored. Rancidity happens when poppy seeds are old. It's a very specific taste that cannot be mistaken with anything else. Tried the bites of Stollen laid out for people to try. It just didn't taste good. Dry, flavorless. read more

I recently looked up the hours for Baker n Spice on a Saturday before I took the time to drive across town for a loaf of bread. Their website said open until 5Pm. I got there at 3:30 and found the door locked and the bakery closed, despite the fact that the sign on the door also said open until 5pm. I think it is very disrespectful to have customers waste time and gas to find a locked door with no notice on their website that they may close earlier. I won't waste my time again to go back. There are plenty other good bakers in town who actually respect their customers time. read more

The space was so cute. The staff was very friendly. I was able to order right away and had my coffee within minutes. I think I was there around 9 am. The coffee cake was dreamy. Very buttery, fluffy and moist. The middle was almost gooey with flavor. So good. The sandwich was premade and I generally do not like premade sandwiches UNTIL now. I snacked on it all day. The bread was perfect, the spread that was on it was so flavorful. Also the salami and cheese was a minimal amount yet it was perfect. I will go there again next time I'm in Portland. read more

Such delicious soft cookies here! I'll have to come back and try their pastries also. Had their whole wheat chocolate chip sea salt cookie - I never would have known it was whole wheat. I tried their chocolate crackle cookie which was surprisingly not too sweet for as sweet as it looks. It was a perfect balance and was like a chocolate brownie cookie bite of heaven. And lastly, we tried the oatmeal raisin and it was perfectly baked. Service was very friendly up until the last minute of their shop being open. read more

Talk about a popping place! This place was buzzing on a Friday morning, and for good reason. The pastry's were fantastic, and the coffee was solid! All the items in the case looked tempting, and the two we actually had did not disappoint. I look forward to coming back to try new items. The only knock I have is that the layout was a bit confusing. You take a number to start out, but it wasn't super clear as to where to wait. Once they call your number, you order, and then mill about awkwardly again. Finally, you pick up your food, but it's on the opposite end from the drinks... overall, just a tad confusing. Talk about an experience! Walking into this bakery, you're immediately welcomed by a beautiful display of pastries of all sorts. They are shown off in a well lit display which outlines both the pastry and cost. Each of the items in which I looked over all felt comfortably priced, especially given their immaculate tastes, texture and consistency. I tried their chocolate chip cooking and crumb cake. Both were out of this world. The service is no exception. The cashier was friendly and very helpful. Today I went in to pick up my online order and the short, dark haired cashier, let me down. Apparently they don't start your sandwiches till you get there, which is kind of cool cause then you don't leave with a cold sandwich. But that leaves it to the responsibility of the person checking you out to let the kitchen know that you're here for your order. This person did not do this today and they gave me the rest of my order and told me I was all good, and I nearly left, but something felt weird, so I had to check, and it turns out my hot sandwiches were not in the bag. I told them this and they were in disbelief. They had to double check it, and then ultimately told the kitchen, and the kitchen just made a oops kind of a face and gesture, and then started making them at that moment. So failures on two points, the person that checked me out and the person that verified my order before handing it to me. Neither of them seem to care at all that I was inconvenienced and had to wait longer. When I told the short dark haired cashier this she told me it was not her problem. I've been going to this bakery for over a decade and their service has suffered recently, and I find it harder to go back each time. It would've been nice to have been acknowledged that I was inconvenienced and I would never turn down compensation as even little as a cookie. read more

I used to frequent here when I lived in the area, and loved it! I went last weekend and brought home a sandwich to eat. Opened it up and there was a beetle in the lettuce. I came back today and mentioned it to the front desk person, and "they" just said, thanks for letting us know. "They" didn't apologize or show any sense of ownership. "They" didn't offer a refund or a discount for today's service. "They" seemed extremely irritated that I would even mention it. I wasn't expecting anything except an apology and ownership, both of which I didn't get. It was very poor customer service. Also, the prices have gone up astronomically. $5 for a basic pastry. Hearing about this place, which was word-of-mouth, I didn't know what to expect but once I walked in and saw the coffee they had I knew it was gonna be good because they had a nice little unique variety, but the pastries were hard looking and a nice size for the price and Boyd. Do they feel heavy once you carry in that little bag, especially the pies! Places like these are like everything fits perfectly. The service was great and the atmosphere was also. I stopped in for a pastry on the way to the nearby Sunday Hillsdale farmer's market. The chocolate croissant was absolute perfection with a beautiful crisp on the outside, lots of soft flaky layers, and thick rich chocolate in the center. This definitely hit the craving button! They even had a gluten-free option for my friend (a flourless chocolate cake-thing that looked amazing and vanished too quickly for me to get a bite). It got pretty busy, but they have an easy system - there is a take-a-number machine right when you walk in so you have time to admire all of the freshly made pastries in the case and decide what you want without losing a spot in line. I loved both how easy it was to order and the excellent quality of the baked goods. I look forward to returning. read more

Can you say delicious? It was my first time in Portland and we came here to pick up a friend's wedding cake. She's a big chocoholic and we couldn't have been more pleased with Baker & Spice! First off, they followed the directions to the T. I was super impressed that even though was a simple cake, it was clean and symmetrical to perfection. It made for perfect wedding pictures. Now let's talk about the taste - mmmhmm! I typically don't like too much chocolate as chocolate frosting on a chocolate cake is too rich for me, but my goodness, they had excellent proportions and everyone loved how soft and fluffy it was as it melted in our mouths. I have returned to Baker & Spice several times since I wrote my first review back in 2009. What brings me back are their scones (only the Cheese Board/Arizmendi's in Berkeley are better), specialty pastries , sandwiches, freshly baked breads, and really good coffee. The service is also consistently prompt, friendly, and helpful. Baker & Spice survived COVID, with several of my visits involving window ordering. During my visit a couple days ago, the inside was open again, but without the previous sit down area that gave this place the added community vibe. That's not entirely missing as my Son and I were engaged by a fellow patron in a Star Trek discussion (Picard - DS9 - Great Link) as we waited for our order. My most recent visit also featured a few seasonal items, that I consider especially "kick ass". I'm talking about the Irish Soda Bread and their Hamantaschen (particularly the fig walnut variety). I really like that there's something special available whenever I visit (as long as I get there early and on days that they're open). read more

I was there early Friday morning. I'm still looking for the best croissant in Portland. This place has lots of choices on pastries but not as many as St Honore. I wish I can take a bite of everything there. I ordered a scone and a croissant. My mom likes the scone a lot. The croissant is flaky but doesn't have strong butter flavor in it. Being born in eastern europe, it's not easy to find "our style" bread in the Pacific Northwest, but this is the best I've found. So, why not five stars? Customer service is the issue here. No, the staff is not rude or anything like that. They just know that they are good and they do things their way. Specifically, you call to make sure a specific item is in stock and ask them if they could hold it for you until you arrive (half hour in my case). No! We don't do that! Is their answer. You try to order online only to find out that most items are "out of stock" even before they open. They may still be available, but not for online purchase. Basically, drive over and see what is available when you arrive. 9/9/2023 beware that if you order online, they now automatically add 15% surcharge/tip to your order. read more

Great Bakery but often times I have noticed that the ever changing crew will often behave in a snarky, condescending, or put out way when in fact they are the ones screwing up your order in one fashion or another. Today I grabbed my number, got in line. Two woman ahead of me one off to the left looking in the case the other ahead of me. The one in front of me asked the older woman if she had been waited on yet. The older woman shrugged her shoulders and said "I don't know whats going on. I feel invisible." I asked if she taken a number thinking that could be why she is being ignored. The woman in front said "They have numbers? Where do you get a number?" I pointed right in front. She was clearly ahead of me and I no problem with her not having a number and tried to get her to go ahead of me. she acted exasperated and refused after getting out of line and grabbing a number. I gave up trying to be kind. I was next in line and the female at the register asked what number did I have. I said 67...she gave a drawn out sarcastic O.K. I said what is the problem. She asked what did I mean. I repeated her response, She said she was getting caught up on numbers and she was only at 60? as if I was going ahead of my turn. Yes! because she was not calling numbers but saying "I can help who's next." I told her that I thought she was confusing customers as to the process here. Clearly because 3 customers are each irritated now. She then condescendingly says everything is alright everyone will get taken care of as if I am frustrated because I'm not getting taken care of. I really don't need that kind of crap. It is not easy getting in and out of that parking lot and getting across the 4 lanes without getting hit. Then you come into get waited on by employees who are not running things in a cohesive way. They will often sell you something they are out of. They will not package you the way you asked when you are trying to take an order to a friend. Then act put out when you ask them to correct it. I need to take a break from B&S. read more

Ordered the Crumb Cake, and two cookies (mostly because they were just out of the oven and steamed up the pastry bar window with perfect heat circles!). You're going to serve something off a oven tray?! I'm going to have to grab that cookie. Crumb cake is a solid square of perfect proportions. 50% buttery crumb and 50% cake. Ideal. Nothing complex, but we all know the secret to a good bake is making it look easy. It's flavored simply and goes great with a cup of coffee. The line cleared quickly as half the people ordered online. I didn't try any savory options and they also had peppermints and gingersnaps packaged up beautifully that surely are delicious. Best pastries in all Portland hands down. This luscious pastry, the Katie Bun is delectable. The scent alone evokes the fragrance of my dear grandmother. I remember burying my nose in the folds of her modest smock, as her buns rose in the oven. I wait with glee for their buns as I did for her buns as a wee child. Upon visiting I did notice on a number of occasions a reflection of man dressed in lumberjack attire of days of yore. I checked with other patrons and they too have caught a glimpse of the lumberjack ( who sometimes is accompanied by a spectral beaver on his shoulder) and the scent of tobacco and pine appears from time to time, tho no one is there. Could this place be haunted? That is to be determined. However, you will be haunted by the lingering loveliness of the Katie Buns on your tongue, and surely be back for more. read more

Hands down, best bakery in Portland vicinity! For the entire 19 years that I have lived in Portland, I have complained about the lack of exceptional bakeries, the kind of bakery that creates a variety of magical treats - pastries, cakes, cookies, bread, tortes - under one roof. Well, I finally found one and they are located in Hillsdale in a strip mall on SW Capital Highway. What??? It's crazy, but true! Sure, there are a few good French patisseries in town (Fleur de Lis, St. Honore); St. Cupcakes bakes some delicious and unique cupcakes; JaCiva makes wonderful cakes and chocolates; Grand Central bakes wonderful bread and pastries; but there aren't many, dare I sat any, that do it all well. Happened upon Baker & Spice after shopping at Gurton's for a houseplant. Decided to check it out and had low expectations. Was greeted immediately and when I saw the variety of savory and sweet baked items - loafs of bread, cookies, doughnuts, cakes - every single thing looking so good, I knew I had to try something. After exchanging a round of questions with the salesperson, I opted for the sour cream coffee cake. I know, an unusual first choice! But for the first time since I moved to Portland, I saw a NY crumb cake, the type that is sold everywhere in NY and NJ where I am from originally. NY style crumb cake's signature is the huge mound of brown sugar and cinnamon crumbs piled on top of a dense but soft vanilla cake with a ratio of 2/3 crumb to 1/3 cake. From the fist bite, I was transported home! The cake was so moist and delicious on its own with a vanilla flavor. The crumb topping was the bomb! Tasted exactly like a NY crumb cake, the only thing missing was the powdered sugar sprinkled on top. For $3.75, one slice is enough for two people. Since I am a marshmallow junkie, I also had to buy an 8-pack of their homemade marshmallows dipped in dark chocolate. The salesperson explained that they are made by their sister shop, The Cakery, just 8 stores up. The marshmallows have the vanilla flavor and soft texture expected from homemade and are on a different level than those marshmallows sold in huge bags at the grocery store. Wish Baker & Spice sold their baked goods at local grocery stores like other larger Portland bakeries do. But this is a neighborhood bakery only, one that everyone wishes was in their neighborhood! It is most definitely worth the ride to Hillsdale, I promise! While you are at this strip mall, check out Gunter's for the most amazing houseplants and vessels, Paloma's Women's boutique for clothing and accessories, and The Cakery if you need a cake for any occasion.
