I really like the concept of this Art Complex. Unfortunately we went on a Saturday and most art studios were closed. We did get to peek in the windows and saw some really interesting art work. We were there to visit Bookleggers for a kids event. We'll have to go back in a weekday! read more

A decade ago, Wynwood was an up and coming community with a grassroots art scene. Today it's a mecca for all thing fun and food influenced by a now well established artistic presence. The Bakehouse Art Complex helped forge Wynwood's reputation into what it is today here's an example of how -- The Flapjack Fiesta was an interactive event designed to feed the local appetite for fine art, philanthropy, and... breakfast. Short stacks and syrup were just a taste offered by one of the most progressive non-profits had in store for enthusiasts. Adults enjoyed the best of brunch including bottomless mimosas, while rubbing elbows with emerging and established virtuosos just steps from their studios. Kids and kids-at-heart had the option to decorate their own pancakes or craft a more permanent memento, and everyone was welcome to test their face-stuffing skills in the Pancake Eating Contest. Afterwards Bakehouse Art Complex invited all to stay for the Wynwood Green and Art Market. The monthly fair provides the community with an influx of fresh produce and spreads the reach of homegrown art far and wide. The inaugural Pancake Party is poised to become a homegrown tradition but also benefit homegrown artists. read more

Pretty cool old place..one of the few - if not the only - true artist loft in Miami. I remember seeing this place from I95and thinking it was a haunted house. I got an evite for an opening event at Basel and found it wasn't. Although off the beaten path from the traditional gallery walk, it can make a walk all its own. There are two stories of artists there, a lot of whom you can talk to about their work, including my personal favorite - Daniel Fila, the creator of the "J-Lo Mural" off 36th & Biscayne. (If you've driven by you know what I'm talking about) Add to that the whole old-building ambiance and the chance to see old structure (huge bolted trusses and expose I-beams) and you're in heaven as a true art lover. The absolute highlight of my Spring Break staycation. Some friends from VA and I went here since I'd heard so many good things and I'm so glad we did. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Yelpers. This was an amazing find on your part. The place is in a very unexpected place, in the middle of a warehouse district in Wynwood near Allapattah. From the outside, you just have no clue what you're in for. Well, it's free, which is awesome, as is the street parking outside. Again, awesome. There are galleries on two floors inside, as well as outside. The artists are all in-residence, so you'll see most of them working away in their studios. They're all so incredibly cool and down-to-earth people and are all more than willing and even excited to talk to you about their work. This place has a lot of people who work with recycled and unusual materials. For example, one guy works with clothes line pins and we talked with him forever about his work and his experiences as an artist. We also met a guy with an outside studio who made robots from old, antique materials. He had this super cool one that he was making for Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes, who is from my hometown. Come to find out, the artist himself is also from VA, so small world. There are so many nooks and crannies in this place that are packed with art. Even the elevators, the concrete walls outside, and even the trashcans outside have been made into canvases for awesome art. I have never in my life had an experience like this, but being able to interact with the artists in a chill, laid-back conversation just made this an unparalleled experience. It really changes you to think outside the box and question your own ways and thinking patterns even more than seeing the art alone does. My friends and I enjoyed every second of hearing the artists fantastic stories and living vicariously through them. It really made us feel a freedom that we seldom get to feel in our busy lives. I absolutely love this place and the next time I get a little spare change, I definitely would not hesitate to send it their way. This is a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful organization with amazing galleries, and even more amazing artists. read more

Come support your local artists here and now. This place is great. It use to be a bread factory, opened in the 1920's. After it closed down, it was retrofitted and purchased to house this non-profit artist center. They supply local and not so local artist starting out (and mid-career artist as well) an affordable place to work and show their art. I love the bakehouse! Really a wonderful place to get a sense of Miami's art scene & a local artist community ‍

If you have ever been to the South Beach Art Center when it used to be there, the concept is the same in this building as well. The building is made up of 2 floors of art studios that are open to the public and you'll see many artists working on projects as you come in and look around. Each studio is small and there are a lot of studios but if you don't come before 1 PM, you won't be able to see almost any of them since most artists leave early and close their studios. Make sure to ask artists if you can take photos and even though it's open to the public, ask if you can come in. Most artists are very welcoming and open to talk but I did have an encounter with an artist who didn't want people in and she shut the door after I asked. read more

This place is as "non-Miami" as it gets...i say that in a good way...its a labyrinthine maze of the eccentric musings of Miami's fine artists and they are displayed in the most unassuming, unpretentious way. I recently went and discovered my new fave artist- Jean Paul Mallozzi...he's a genius with his medium and is a fantastic story teller! I bought one of his pieces at a price (shhh) that would never be possible at high end galleries and his work is certainly deserving to be in one. Check out their summer program to develop your budding artists (min age of 10) it's $250- for about 4 weeks of intensive technique development for your kids or nieces and nephews...includes all materials. fantastic hidden gem! read more

Went for Yelp Streetopia which was a combination of art work, music, food and entertainment. Before this event i never heard of the Bakehouse Art Complex but now im def a fan. Beautiful building covered in art for everyone and anyones taste. You have the ability to look in art artist at work and through the hallways of paintings, sculptures and beautiful pieces. read more

I had allot of fun here while attending Yelps Streetopia. The place is really nice inside and the art was cool to look at. I enjoyed, as well, the different stations that were scattered throughout the place. I have not been back since but definitely plan on taking a drive down there to hang around and be arty. read more

The Bakehouse Art Complex is really and experience. It is a place of the regular beaten path but like finding a diamond in the rough. Visited the location because Yelp's streetopia event which was on of the best combination of food drinks and ART all in one time. wonderful non-profit center, housing low-rent studios for emerging artists. it's open and free to the public and very worthy of a visit. there's 70 studio and 2 exhibition galleries. they even have outreach and children's workshops. with so many high-priced galleries and such well established artists in miami, bakehouse is leading the way supporting local, up-and-coming artists. in my opinion, there should be more places like bakehouse. read more

Visited here on there open night- 2nd Friday. Coming from Williamsburg (Brooklyn), my boyfriend and I have seen our share of art galleries. We didn't know what to expect w/ a Miami art gallery, but were please to see that although it wasn't exactly an open studio (more like rooms with exhibits), it was a great place to see some local art. Even better, the people here were so accomodating and informative. read more

Bakehouse is a representation of what is making Miami a hard city to beat for arts and popular culture. Located on the edge of the Design District, they have regular events here designed around, what else - ART! There is are large space down stairs for events and the rest of the space - downstairs and up - is devoted to artists studios, and the art is very varied. You go there at the right time and you'll be able to meet the artists and chat with them about their approaches and inspirations. Love that this place exists and that Miami's arts community is strong and growing. read more

IT'S A MUSEUM, IT'S AN ART GALLERY, ITS AN ART STUDIO. What an interesting museum or complex it is a living piece of art in progress. Inside it's walls are about 100 artist studios busy at work, showing their work , and exhibiting their work on every wall. Not only can you buy an artwork but also talk to the artist themselves, it was very interesting. One picture I saw was a city picture I looked at it and said I was right there, and the artist told me it was of Moscow . Its a great place to spend a rainy day . Also on the street there is a lot of gang graffiti not art work, I worked over 30 years in East Los Angeles so I know gang activity when I see it, but not to worry in the day time. This was a place I was expecting to be more like an art gallery as opposed to individual studios. I enjoyed looking around during the Yelp event. I think it would be interesting to cruise around this place when there is an actual art show going on so you can see more art and not as much focus on food, drinks, and entertainment from an event. read more

Although I went for Streetopia and was unable to truly enjoy the gallery - there was great talent under one roof. Definitely plan on going and making this an outting. All unique styles of art - some studios had objects such as clothes pins which made up the art piece. read more

What an awesome venue for the arts. I had been meaning to checkout Bakehouse, but didn't actually make it over until the Sketchy Miami Party #2. That party, by the way, was awesome. Bakehouse itself is a maze of the arts. Each studio, as you would expect, brings its own cool vibe, making it a melting pot of sculptures, photographers, painters, sketchers and more. The floor is completely worn in and covered in plywood. The stairs look like the kind you climbed at your public school up north back in the day. And the white walls have seen their share of recovers, but this all lends to Bakehouse's vibe. There's so much to see, it's almost overwhelming. Candy wrapper-covered Barbies, life-size pencil sketches of fashion gowns, ceramic flowers, breathtaking watercolor nudes, paintings of flowers and beetles ... It's a lot to take in. But it's amazing. From what I hear, the studio spaces are affordable, giving Miami's many talented artists a home for their creative endeavors. I can't wait to go back and see what's sprung since my last visit. read more
