I found my visit to this museum enjoyable. Before I enter the museum to the left there was a little green area with some art work. It was a pleasant surprise. I liked the contrast of nature and city. The first art piece I noticed were those big silver balls on the floor. They were beautifully arranged. They reminded me of a childhood game. I wish they had been an interactive piece. The museum had many rooms with beautiful artwork. It had two experiences both very nice. The word Infinite comes to mind when I remember them. I almost missed them. The staff was helpful and friendly. They guided and pointed things out to me. They added to the experience. They seemed knowledgeable and to love their jobs. The museum had a valet parking option. It was $20. I saw some street parking around, not to many spots. read more

Came with a friend, we needed a budget friendly day out after both losing our jobs . We were able to actually enter for free as she had an EBT card (what a fun perk for hard times!) they have a scavenger hunt you can play while looking at the art, find all the pieces and mark their location for a free sticker! The exhibits were so cool and they have a few interactive-ish instillations. It wasn't too packed and super blue is across the street for a day fill of art. We didn't try the restaurant but it's for sure on our list for next time ! read more

We ended up at the Rubell museum because the thumping noise at Superblue was too much for me. The Rubell museum is a cute museum but it is truly meant for grown ups only as some of the art is risque and I imagine parents who brought their kids must have felt awkward at times. I liked the scavenger hunt on the map and I liked that they had a full service restaurant on-site. read more

Love this museum!!! I've been three times, and every time is better than the last! The staff is wonderful, the pieces are always so mesmerizing! The current installation i don't believe is best for kids because it's kinda graphic, but it has a mixture of Keith Harring, Yayoi Kasumi, February James and Omari Douglin to say the least! You can spend well over an hour if you really immerse yourself in the art.. Great place for a solo date, or someone seeking inspiration to get back into their craft! read more

The Rubell Family Collection, is a private contemporary art museum located in both Miami & Washington, D.C. Don & Mera Rubell were art collectors who helped develop Miami's art community. In the 1960's Mera was a NYC teacher, Don was a medical student & his brother co-owned Studio 54. The museum opened to the public in 1993 in the Wynwood Art District and moved to this large warehouse in 2019. The Washington DC Museum opened last year. Today their collections contains over 7,700 works of art. We spent two hours here and it felt like our own private museum. The installations were massive, thought provoking and each was very unique. We spent about 2 hours exploring all 35 vibrant galleries, it felt like we had the entire museum to ourselves. Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cecily Brown, Keith Haring, Kehinde Wiley, Rashid Johnson, Hayv Kahraman, Jeff Koons, William Kentridge, Yoshitomo Nara, Cindy Sherman, and Mickalene Thomas ... make up the impressive permanent collection. I loved Yayoi Kusama's immersive installation. He created a kaleidoscopic effect that transported me to an alternate, limitless universe. The Infinity Rooms Where the Lights in My Heart Go, and the Infinity Mirrored Room were mesmerizing. The Narcissus Garden is composed of stainless steel spheres, that flow along the Museum's central gallery, creating a river of reflection. We saw the Basil Kincaid: Spirit in the Gift exhibit. His enormous African motif quilts, collages & photography installations filled the walls in his room with color. He used recycled materials in colorful and eye-catching designs. Cuban born, Alejandro Piñeiro Bello painted the tropical colors of his Caribbean culture using raw linen and burlap on tremendous canvases. Singular Views: Los Angeles, reflected Rubells' commitment, to discovering and sharing new artists. Singular Views focused on 16 artists painting, sculpture, and video. These artists utilized Los Angeles backdrops that reference storefronts, automobiles, graffiti-laden facades, and human flesh. This mix of motifs demonstrated the diversity & variety in LA. There was a garden with outdoor seating, a bar and sculptures. We enjoyed lunch at the Michelin starred Leku. The Shop was filled with jewelry, books, clothing, candles, and tchotchkes created by the artists. There was a large library that is open by appointment. read more

The Rubell is gem of a museum. The art pieces are arranged in a few dozen rooms off of a main hall area "spine" where (at the time) Yayoi Kusama's arranged mirrored spheres were staged along the floor (there were also two closed rooms with Kusama's infinity mirrors). There's a larger room toward the back with some very large pieces including those by Keith Haring. At a leisurely pace, you can see everything within 2 - 3 hours. We wanted to visit Superblue across the street but you apparently have to reserve a time slot, which that day were already gone. Plan ahead! read more

I had time to spend and decided to check out the museum. The layout is cool as it kind of goes into a big zag to 33 different art sections. I enjoyed the art and the 2 Yayoi Kusama ones. Every corner begged to be admired (and photographed!). My visit to the Rubell Museum has left me deeply troubled and wounded by the "art" that was on display. I attended a wedding at the museum this past weekend, and to say I was shocked and appalled is an understatement. Not all, but several of the exhibits contained imagery that is profoundly inappropriate for minors and emotionally distressing for humanity at large. As a woman of faith, I was especially disturbed by works featuring inverted crosses, dark spiritual symbolism, and depictions suggesting the harm or consumption of babies -- visuals that clearly carry evil undertones. Other installations contained highly explicit material portraying acts that, in my opinion, cross far beyond artistic freedom and into moral corruption. I consider myself very open-minded toward art, diverse worldviews, and even controversial subjects. Yet there is a clear line between creativity and depravity, between nudity and vulgarity, between thoughtful expression and a deliberate attempt to shock and desensitize. What I witnessed inside this museum was not art intended to elevate or inspire -- it was art that sought to wound, provoke, and desensitize the soul. It came as a tremendous shock to learn that the museum admits children for free under the age of seven. I cannot understand how anyone could consider this environment appropriate for young, impressionable minds. At one point, I stood in the middle of the museum and wept as I saw a small child-- perhaps seven or eight years old (without parental supervision) -- standing alone before a graphic painting that no child should ever have to see. How can this be permitted in a public space that welcomes families, when similar imagery would be restricted in a film or television program as 'rated R'? I wept at what I saw. My heart shattered. To see our children exposed to this filth in the name of "art". This is not art. This is an agenda. This is the indoctrination and desensitization of our children and the populace at large. This is not artistic freedom; this is a reflection of a culture losing its moral compass. I pray that more people awaken, stand firm in truth, and protect what is sacred -- faith, purity, and light -- in a world that seems increasingly dark I wish I could attach photos of what I saw, but I know the moment I do, my review would be removed for violating content guidelines -- which is telling in and of itself. This is an incredible museum with an amazing collection of Contemporary Art. I was pleased to see art by so many of my favorite artists ranging from Nick Cave, Kehinde Wiley, Kusama, and more. Nick Cave is my ultimate favorite artist and this was the first time I've been somewhere that has more than one of his soundsuits, so that was especially exciting! The museum is the perfect size to spend about two hours here and is easy to navigate. They also have a cafe connected and although I didn't eat here, I did have possibly the best iced latte of my life. I don't know what they did to it, but it was perfection. This museum is so beautiful and I would 100% suggest it to anyone who loves contemporary art. read more

This my personal favorite of all the museums in miami. Plus, it was founded by the owners of Studio 54 so that's major flex. They're known for their private collection of contemporary art of which many exhibitions are held to portray such. You can't help but feel inspired being here. It's a long maze-like tour of properly procured pieces which captivate everyone who appreciates art. These larger than life sculptures, murals, paintings & presentations are worth scoping out. I love the restaurant at the entrance which is a plus because it can become a perfect afternoon with cocktails and food before or after your visit. If you're a frequent visitor, paying for the annual membership might make more sense. I always look forward to their events because coming here is truly a treat. Meter parking is what you'll likely encounter & it's pretty centrally located so put it on your list. read more

We had an incredible time exploring the museum and paid a little extra for the infinity rooms. Worth it! Their pieces range from beautiful to bizarre and everything in between. Went here for The Museum Plays and it was fabulous!!! Miami New Drama hits a homerun with this unique and well-organized event. The actors were phenomenal! And the entire concept of short plays inspired by works of art on the museum was genius! What an amazing collaboration! Everyone should get tickets and see these performers. The museum itself is across the street from SuperBlue and is a more traditional-type gallery. We didn't see all the pieces, since groups were guided to different rooms where the performances were being held. But the pieces that we did see were incredibly engaging. However, I recommend coming here first and THEN going across the street to Superblue - if your plans include seeing both in one day. I'm from Orlando and it was nice to see a true Basquiat here versus that fiasco at the Orlando of Art. Beautiful pieces of art, but a warning...a few are quite graphic so bear that in mind if you're visiting with young children. 10-30-21 Afternoon Came here with friends to see the Super Blue exhibit. It was phenomenal probably one of the best events in South Florida in decades. We got our tickets online and showed our QR code upon entering. The light installation was magnificent. It really was a mood lifter. So sorry that it wasn't a permanent exhibition or I would attend at least one a month. Interesting location just west of Downtown Miami closer to the airport. Amazing how this city has grown and evolved over the years. My favorites were the lights when you first came in that opened and closed like a flower. Than there was the room that you entered with the flowers especially the irises it seemed so lifelike. One of the best Saturday afternoons ever. Would definitely love to come back to other exhibits here. Convenient valet out front that was also reasonably priced. read more

We loved everything we ordered except smoked paprika ice cream. As someone with super adventurous and promiscuous taste buds, I found smoked paprika in an ice cream too much of a stretch. I was pleasantly surprised to see Yayoi Kusama's work and some famous Japanese artists. I decided to visit this museum before having lunch at Leku with my friends for my birthday. We all enjoyed going from room to room. We didn't have a chance to go into the infinity room, but for my next visit, I want to pay extra to see this room too. It takes roughly an hour to enjoy this museum. I love the piece with the two burning candles going around circles, and dropping the wax to create the Venn diagram. The installation was unique; I could just stand there and stir at the candles forever. I am looking forward to going back there soon! read more

Don and Mera Rubell are two of the most well known contemporary art collectors of our time. They married in 1964 and started collecting art that same year, devoting $25 a week from Mera's salary as a teacher to begin their collection. The couple had a knack for discovering emerging artists, buying their work when it was expensive, and then watching the value soar. They couple wield what some call the Rubell touch. When word gets out that they are interested in an artist, suddenly a lot of other collectors become interested too. At the urging of their son Jason, in 1993 they opened the Rubell Family Collection to the public. It was one of the first private museums in the United States. In 2019 the Rubell's moved their collection from Wynwood to Allapattah. The collection reopened as the Rubell Museum with a 100,000-square-foot campus of 40 galleries, a library, and a restaurant located in a a former food processing complex that was refurbished by Selldorf Architects. The move was driven by outgrowing their old space as well as the cost. Today the couple own 7,200 works by more than 1,000 artists and they increase their collection by the hundreds each year. The Rubell's were instrumental in attracting Art Basel, an annual international art fair to Miami. If you know anything about Allapattah you might be stunned to find a world class museum tucked in among the warehouses. Allapattah looks like Wynwood did 10 years ago but this museum will not stay hidden for long. High prices are driving people out of Wynwood and investors are banking that Allapattah will be the next neighborhood to explode. The neighborhood is being transformed by exciting businesses like Hometown Barbecue across the street from the museum. The museum has free street parking and admission is $15 for adults. The door warns that the museum contains adult content. I did see children there but I do not recommend bringing them, more on that later. The museum has a small gift shop and the Leku Restaurant. I am not the biggest fan of modern art although it does interest me. A lot of it leaves me rolling my eyes or scratching my head. Often I think I could have done that but sometimes I will see something that really excites me and there was a lot that was thought provoking art here. I was enchanted by the silver balls spilling down the hallway called Narcissus Garden by artist Yayoi Kusama. I could understand the name because you couldn't help but stare at your reflection in the shiny balls. They are on display until December. I also liked Dogs from Your Childhood by artist Yoshitomo Nara because who doesn't like cute dogs? I also saw work by Keith Haring, probably one of the few contemporary artists I am familiar with. Some of the art features nudes but that isn't why I wouldn't recommend it for children. That would be because of Charley. In one of the front rooms there is a sculpture piece called Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley...I have read the explanation three times and I still don't understand it. It is an orgy scene in graphic detail and every person participating in it looks like what I believe is the artist. Post a picture? I don't know if I dare. There is a picture on the Rubell family website. The people coming out of the room it is housed in got quite a chuckle when they saw my face looking at it the first time. To quote them "some things can't be unseen." Even though my face was half covered my eyes said everything. It is not that I'm prudish, you just don't expect to walk in a room and see a life sized orgy in front of you. I think watching other peoples experience it could have been art. In case anyone else wants to find it, it is on the room right after the beer can installation and yes all of those cans did contain beer, I checked. LOL. Although I wasn't amazed by the artistic integrity of Charley, it did give me a laugh. I had a really nice afternoon at the Rubell and would definitely come back especially during Art Basel. The restaurant looked cute, its open looking out onto a small garden. I instead had lunch at Hometown Barbecue which is worth checking out, especially if you luck into happy hour. I loved exploring Allapattah. It is a neighborhood on the rise in part because of Rubell family. Definitely worth keeping an eye on in the coming years. read more

I thought I'd never have the chance to see any of Yayoi Kusama's works, especially in Miami. Rubell Museum features two! The day I went, there was no line so they weren't timing how many seconds you're allowed to stay in the infinity room like they are in other places. I took the tour & was so glad I did. I highly recommend it. You'll appreciate the art so much more. I got to enjoy works by famous artists like Basquiat & Keith Haring & local artists like Purvis Young. I found some new favorites I hadn't been exposed to before. There are restrooms and a lovely patio with a restaurant, as well as a gift shop. Park on the street or opt for valet. We got there right as they opened and was able to see them without a big line. The museum staff was very friendly and helpful. How did the Rubells amass such large collection of Keith Haring's work? They started early, as soon as they could afford art. Nice open space and well laid out. Lots of visually stimulating pieces, presented well. Definitely put it on your list of museums to see. If you have time, grab a table at the Spanish restaurant outside. It looks amazing. Parking is a bit of a hassle and Super Blue opened across the street so it's extra busy. read more
