There's something about standing in front of it that instantly slows everything down. The sun poring through the leaves. The simplicity, the balance, the silence it creates, it almost feels like the artwork is inviting you to pause for a moment. I found myself just staring at it, letting the calm and tranquility take over. The gallery itself is beautifully curated, with a clean and thoughtful layout that lets each piece breathe. Just the tip toe noise on the wooden floor makes me chill every time I walk through it. It's the kind of place where you don't rush; you wander, reflect, and connect with the art in your own way. It is free to access and all the personnel is nice and attentive. If you're in Coral Gables and looking for a moment of peace mixed with inspiring contemporary art, Cernuda Arte is definitely worth stepping into.

I got an evite for an opening event at Basel and found it wasn't. Although off the beaten path from the traditional gallery walk, it can make a walk all its own. There are two stories of artists there, a lot of whom you can talk to about their work, including my personal favorite - Daniel Fila, the creator of the "J-Lo Mural" off 36th & Biscayne. (If you've driven by you know what I'm talking about) Add to that the whole old-building ambiance and the chance to see old structure (huge bolted trusses and expose I-beams) and you're in heaven as a true art lover. Oh, and by the way, a couple of the artists have said that it is haunted ;).

Except that's not what she was) showed up with two "small" paper bags. I'm not sure I can say she dropped them on the table, but I can't say she gently placed them there, either. I was lost for a moment, like, what is this? It took a second to realize it was our order. So, presentation is lacking, to say the least. I expect this type of food delivery from a hospital "on-the-go" coffee shop, not a "brewing cafe and arthouse." Especially on a weekend, they should consider some sort of plating option, even if it's just a paper plate. Otherwise, you don't need this much real estate (the place is not exactly tiny) if the service is going to be grab-and-go style. Service was proper, not overly polite, just proper. We also ordered a latte and a cappuccino. The latte was beautifully presented, while the cappuccino was served in the most unusual of ways: in a Mason jar. What? Odd, to say the least. However, I can forgive all these "trespasses" into proper gastronomy because, in the end, the coffee was good and the sausage muffin was delicious. We also ordered a ham and cheese croissant because my friend was left starving after the small portion, even though the size was pretty much what you'd expect (think McDonald's muffin size). The croissant, on the other hand, was decently sized and priced. He asked for the ham on the side, and it came in its own "paper bag." ‍ To recap: While the interior is larger than expected and fairly appealing (the lighting is more suited to a brightly lit, task-driven factory assembly line), the actual experience is a mix of: here's my grandma's special glass cup, but Uncle made your sandwiches to go in cheap paper bags. Very contrasting experiences. The saving grace is that everything was at least great-tasting and reasonably priced. Just know this is not the place for a cute date.

The friendliest art gallery…read more Virginia Miller opened her first gallery in 1974 in Coconut Grove with at first mostly local art but soon expanded to Cuban, Latin American and even some Chinese artist. She moved her gallery to Coral Gables in the early 80's and was a major factor in starting the first monthly gallery nights in greater Miami. That's right folks, Wynwood didn't start shyt. Virginia is extremely approachable as is her husband and they usually have the artist in house to answer any and all questions. The latest artist that was showing here was Leslie Lew. She shared with the Yibbies a story behind a painting she did in the early 80's while she lived above a botanica on Broadway. Let me repeat that. A botanica I'm the middle of Manhattan on Broadway. Times have changed. If you do happen to come by on a First Friday know that they will have some kind if white wine, never red. Red spills where you least expect it.
