Super cute little bakery slightly tucked away in the middle of the block. Family-run, obviously lots of fans given all the pictures on walls of their goodies. My sister and I were in the mood for some good sweets so we started to google bakeries that have what we were looking for, surprisingly while we were looking we saw Bake being reviewed on the tv. We saw those whoopie pies and WENT CRAZY!!! We had our hearts set on them, so off to Bake we were... We know the Wicker Park Area very well and were kind of mad at ourselves for not noticing this bakery before. We went inside, the aroma was crazy and the decor was nice as well perfectly suiting the feel of the bakery. Our mouths instantly watered at the sight of the cupcakes. We got a red velvet and a Oreo cupcake. When we got to the register we saw the cookies and we wanted them as well so we bought a chocolate chip pretzel cookie and a M&M sprinkle cookie. Those cookies were SO GOOD!! I have yet to eat my Oreo cupcake, but my sister's Red Velvet cupcake was delicious. I have been going to Bake for about 2 years now... and they simply have the best of everything!!! My personal favorite is their blueberry muffin. PERFECTION in a muffin. What I mainly have to say is... 1. The staff is awesome! So helpful! 2. Go early. 15 minutes before close we stopped in eager to give this place a try after discovering it a few weeks earlier. Little did we know the popularity of this place left only a few choices as close time approached. We had coffees yum from Metropolis and shared a very delicious chocolate cookie. Special thanks to the girl who helped us. Even though they were about to close she made a fresh pot of coffee and served it in the prettiest of cups. Yay! read more

I really don't understand how this place stays open. I live one minute away, and it always seems to be closed. I get that it's an independent business and all that, but what kind of bakery closes at 6:00 and doesn't even allow for people getting out of work to stop in and pick up some goods? The hours would be forgivable if they at least had some delicious baked goods, but unfortunately, my several times of going has only resulted in me enjoying one thing (the chocolate cake). I've tried their cupcakes and like several other reviewers, have found the cake itself to be horribly dry and just tasting of...well...of nothing good. And the frosting was just buttery/oily and unfortunately, that buttery flavor overpowers any sweetness. The cookies I've tried, both sugar and chocolate chip, were again, so "meh" I can't even give a detailed description of what was wrong with them. I can't speak negatively of the service, except for the weird hours I mentioned earlier, but hey, perhaps the owner is independently wealthy and just doing this for fun and doesn't actually need the business. The place itself is very cute, but at the end of the day, a bakery should be about delicious products, not cuteness. I've read many of the positive reviews of this place, and don't get it. Is this part of Wicker Park so desperate for a little bakery of our own, that we'll just accept whatever mediocre (at best) goods get put in our face? Or is it just everyone on their weird vegan, paleo, gluten free, etc. etc. diets have just forgotten what a cupcake is supposed to taste like? Bottom line: Good things are not coming out of this cute place. read more

I was looking forward to trying to Bake, but was unfortunately very disappointed. The woman who helped me was less than pleasant and the selection was meager. I could excuse the meager selection if the items available had been better tasting. My friend and I got a peanut butter cupcake and a piece of the pumpkin bread. The peanut butter cupcake was very dry and not very "peanut buttery" at all. The pumpkin cake was slightly better, at least moist, but nothing to write home about. On a side, and equally valid, note my friend initially attempted to order a chai latte, however they did not have Chai tea. The second attempt was an iced soy mocha. What she actually received was simply soy milk on the rocks... apparently some miscommunication. The only saving grace is the lovely outdoor patio. Overall: Not worth the trip. read more

This is the best bakery with the friendliest set of bakers. The coffee's great (Metropolis) and the goods are fresh. There's an interior cafe with outdoor seating in a side lot. They have wifi and cool photos on their walls too. Try the lemon scone if there are any left. read more

I am a big fan of Bake. It's a great place to grab a treat, study, chill, or bring your laptop for surfing the interwebs. The place is airy and bright, with lots of kid-friendly appeal in the form of toys and general awesomeness. I am a big fan of the whoopie pies and the malt cake. Oh, and the oreos... The service is friendly and the vibe is peaceful so that you'll actually want to return. Goodies are baked fresh daily, so stop in early for the best selection! Once they forgot to make a cake I ordered, and they made it for me FOR FREE! Of course, I left them a big tip in the tip jar. Kindness and great service are hard to find and should always be rewarded. At Bake, you're in for a sugar rush and a whirl of good karma and general niceness. read more

Maybe I should rate Bake at more like 2 1/2 . I mean, I bought two cookies but I only liked one of them. The Nutella was disappointing. It just didn't taste good. I ordered a cake for my bf's birthday - a smores cake with writing on the cake, "Happy Birthday So and So". I arrived to pick up said cake and they said that someone had picked it up a few minutes before. Someone actually came in and picked up a cake with Happy Birthday So and So on it?! She said that the customer always approves the pick-up and she remembered the cake. So, that's really strange. Anyway, they made a quick change and provided me with another cake at no charge and it was delicious! It might not have been the cake that I ordered and it was stressful there for a few minutes when I thought that I had ZERO cake but the situation was resolved favorably. I don't write reviews often, but this place deserves one. Definitely my favorite bakery in Chicago and I've tried all the big names (Molly's... Sweet Mandy B's... etc.). Try the simple vanilla/vanilla cupcake or the german chocolate --- both might be some of the most delicious things you've ever tasted. Also great for catering. Used them for a dessert party recently and the order was on time, quick and freshly made the day I picked up. Highly recommend! read more

My 1st review. & it's true what a friend once told me: A person 1st takes initiative to write a review when they're mad. & that is the case today! :o) In regards to Bake, I don't know how well they can bake if they cannot even answer a phone or return a message. I called on Tuesday morning, left a message to see if they had birthday cupcakes for my 7 yr old son AND HOPEFULLY ORDER OVER THE PHONE but they never returned my call. I called again today and the phone didn't go to voice mail, just kept ringing. They should work on their customer service or not suggest people call on their website. read more

I've become a regular at Bake since moving to Chicago and I've loved everything I've ever tried there. The muffins are generously sized and delicious, the cookies are inventive and gooey, the scones are never too dry, and the carrot cake I ordered for a friend's birthday was the best I've ever had - seriously. They make good lattes and serve yummy Metropolis coffee. It's also worth noting that they have no annoying minimum credit card purchase. Very kid friendly without being annoyingly so. Whoever gives this place less than 4 stars is seriously dysfunctional. Whenever I go there (I don't live closeby and make the trip express) I get 'the box' which is basically 1 or 2 pieces of everything they make. It's that good. You can't go wrong with any choice you'd make. Cookies and banana bread are my favorite choices but everything's fantastic. Portions are gigantic and it's all freshly home-made so you get a lot for your money's worth. I'm happy I don't live that close because I'd weight easily 30 pounds more and all those hours working out.... down the toilet. I also ordered a cake once for a friend's bday and it was the freshest & lightest orange hazelnut chocolate cake I've ever had. I got tons of compliments from it. How did I not know about this place and it's right in my neighborhood?!? This is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good for the yummy baked goods, bad for the effect of said baked goods on my thighs. Sigh, such is life. This little bakery is so cute and unassuming, yet has so many goodies to choose from. I've only been once, but I'll definitely be returning. The baker/sales lady was so helpful and attentive and the banana chocolate chip cookie I bought was perfect in every way. Their prices also seem much more reasonable than other bakeries in the area. Maybe that's because it's a newer business, because they've certainly not compromised on ingredients or service. It was ready on time; the (minimal) interaction I had from placing the order to picking it up was fine; the cake looked good, as expected; but I can only give this 3 stars because it really lacked in flavor. The cake itself was bland and the frosting was surprisingly not very sweet. This was also the consensus amongst the partygoers. Blueberry muffin lady how I missed you at the farmer's market last season. Your blueberry muffins were chock full of blueberry goodness, and explosion of blueberries. And then one day I parked in front of Bake... curiosity got the best of me... and there you were you delicious and delectable blueberry muffin. We were reunited and it tasted so good! Can you tell how much I love the muffins at Bake! Seriously Bake is a fantastic bakery on North Avenue. I have tried the zucchini bread... amazing... chocolate chip cookies... so good and of course the muffin! Some day I will venture to the fresh fruit danish they do look delicious with glistening fresh strawberries. The shop is adorable. I would give Bake 5 stars but you can not park on North Avenue on either side M-F before 9 so I can not get my blueberry muffin fix. Try the blueberry muffin! read more
