Definitely come here for a few different kinds of feta, huge and tender pita breads, olives, and don't forget to get a meat pie and spinach pie. If the cafe is open get a lunch plate with beef and lamb shawarma and choice of 3 sides for 13$!! We got it with rice pilaf, salad, hummus and pita and was plenty of food for my wife and I to share for a light lunch. Service is a little off at times, recent visit I really had to go out of my way to flag someone down so that I could order some cheeses and pies from the case. Also one register was down so checking out took quite a while with about 6 people in line. read more

Can I give this place 10 stars? The food was DELICIOUS and filling. I ordered a chicken shawarma plate with tahini sauce on the side. The plate included fresh and perfectly seasoned chicken, rice pilaf, hummus and a lovely salad that was plentiful with cucumbers. The tahini sauce was a great addition and surprisingly, they don't charge extra for it! Oh my word, this plate filled me right up and left me so satisfied! Staff was super friendly and my meal was completed right on time to pick up as soon as I walked in the door (I ordered over the phone). I drive close to 50 minutes each way to come to Bahnan's because it makes me feel like home. My kids actually ask when we're going again if we don't go for a while. Our very first time there, the lady at the register gave us each a pastry because she overheard us driving a long distance. Total Middle Eastern hospitality!!! We usually go have our sandwiches at the café then shop at the market. We've only tried the chicken and beef shawerma and falafel sandwiches, all very good! Prices are reasonable and there's a big selection of things. They always have seasonal produce and goodies too, which is always great! I can't say enough good about Bahnan's - from the friendly staff and owner to their DELICIOUS food and the great value! I have not been to Albania in a few years, and I was craving suflaqe/shwarma - Bahnan's is the best! The main reason I shop here is because I make spanakopita on a regular basis (in fact, it was at Bahnan's that I was able to find a large round "tava" - Walmart doesn't sell them) and I always buy domestic feta and phyllo dough here. The cheese is much better quality than in the supermarket - and I LOVE their Doudonis feta. I am also thrilled that Bahnan's carries BOTH Bulgarian and Albanian kashkaval (yellow cheese), which are both delicious yet distinct from each other. Bahnan's also carries foil pans and aluminum covers of different sizes (for half the price at The Dollar Store, lol) which are very convenient. I have been patronizing Bahnan's for 25 years now, and when my kids were little the sweet Albanian lady working the cheese counter always used to give them a cookie when we came in. My best friend in high school was Greek, so when my college buddy suggested we check this place out, I was more than happy to. The woman behind the counter (very cute by the way!) was nice enough to explain what all the pastries were. Met a fiend here for a late lunch and had an amazing meal and shopping experience. The employees are friendly, helpful and very understanding that not all of their customers know about the products they sell. I bought a pound of mixed cookies and a box of assorted baklava to go before heading to the cafe for a beef shawarma. The shawarma was delicious, tender and full of flavor; probably the best I have ever had. This place is a true find as most of the products they sell you won't find on the shelves at my grocery stores and they are very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back again soon. read more

A loyal customer of 25 years. This place still surprises me every time!! I am a super busy mom with 2 jobs, so many times it happened that I'll run in there to grab a few things literally 2 minutes before they close. Guess what, no one ever said anything like " we close at 7". Everyone is smiling as if I was their first customer of the day and not the last one and I am not being rushed. I do try to be conscientious about their time, so I don't abuse that privilege. The food is absolutely delicious. Love the catering services and used them on multiple occasions. The best comparison I can make to Bahnan's is Massis Bakery in Watertown. Amazing bakery items, including dozens of different flaky pastries, mammoul, confections, and meat pies. Additionally, they have an incredible cafe with tasty shwarma, very well done hummus, and the _best_ spinach and feta salad that I've ever had. I could eat a gallon of the stuff. I travel 15 miles at lunch just to get my fix of delicious middleastern food. The folks behind all the counters are very friendly, and were willing to help me when I asked. They only lose a star because they need more parking and maybe a few more seats. read more

Got a shwarma sandwich and a falafel plate... sandwiches are supposed to come with fries. Come home, no fries. The falafel was dry but thankfully they give you plenty of hummus to dip it in. For me, one of the drawbacks of working in the city I grew up in is that I always fall back on the standards I knew "back then" when there are much tastier options that have opened since the last time I lived in the area. Fortunately, I have some friends who live here and point me in the direction of fab things I never knew were here when I was 16. Bahnan's is one of those places. I forgot my lunch one day and was complaining about not knowing what to get that would actually pass for healthy (read: includes a non lettuce veggie or two) when a friend gave me instructions: Go to Bahnan's. Get the chicken shwarma plate and salads on the sides. She was so right. Hot, delicious chicken shwarma that was hand cut in front of me (including a sample he handed me right after slicing) and tons of spinach and fattoush. Some of the best Middle Eastern I've ever had. And it was actually even better the next day when half of the huge portion of chicken got to make friends with the salads. The portion was HUGE and under $10 for two good size lunches. The counter service guy was SO friendly and took the time to walk me through all the salad options (food allergies sometimes dampen my adventures in ethnic cooking), and answered all my questions. The store gets 5 stars. Its unbelievable. Cheapest place to buy feta or tahini I've ever seen. So many relatively obscure Mediterranean ingredients that are hard to find at grocery stores. Loads of pita options from local bakeries. Cheap grains and spices. The cafeteria gets 3 stars at best. The food is cheap, but it's also not great.
