The food here was absolutely delicious and so flavorful! They have many options but I went with the falafel bowl and chose the baba ganoush. The falafel was crispy and cooked well, and the baba ganoush was creamy. The sauces tied everything together and the veggies were all very fresh! Service was decently quick, since it's in the food hall they give you a buzzer so you can come back when it's ready. Located inside Salt City Market, these were some lovely platters of goodness. I was in the area recently and we had just arrived from a cancelled flight, airport switch, and general insanities. Luckily this was near our hotel and we were looking for some tasty and hearty eats! We ordered the mixed shawarma (beef and chicken) and the special of the day which was Cream Chicken (similar to a chicken katsu/schnitzel-fried). Both platters came with rice, pickled veggies, and sauces. I think for next time I will ask for sauce on the side because there was A LOT of sauce. In 2014, owner Firas and his family relocated to Syracuse as refugees when war came to their home of Baghdad, Iraq. Firas went on to cook at several Middle Eastern restaurants in the city such as Byblos and Red Olive before opening Baghdad in Fairmount, and then relocating to Salt City Market when they opened in 2020. The wife and I love Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food. It is literally some of my favorite food to eat and we've eaten at almost every Mediterranean spot in CNY, so naturally we had to try Baghdad as well when we got the chance. I tried a shwarma plate while the wife got a falafel plate. Everything was great. My only SMALL complaints is that I wish their rice was seasoned and I also would've liked more sauce on my shwarma. Slowly but surely, I'm tasting my way around the Salt City Market. A few months back, on a whim, Baghdad was my latest culinary excursion. Syracuse is home to many excellent Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurants (way more than you might expect for CNY), but it seems like Baghdad can hold its own. I stopped in around lunchtime and ordered the falafel sandwich. Service was a schosch on the slow side, but I think this was just my timing. Most of the staff was trying to take a lunch break, so there was a tiny wait, but by no means was it excessive. The portion size really impressed me. For $5, you get a really generous long sub (think baguette-length.) The bread wasn't homemade and seemed more American than Middle Eastern. I suspect this is because the restaurant is still pretty new-- maybe when they have their footing a bit more they'll make their own bread, or more likely, upgrade to a local bread-- goodness knows the city has several. The falafel was a good consistency and wasn't dry. The toppings were basic but tasty. My meal was very filling for not a lot of money. I'd stop in again, and would recommend it to friends. read more

Part of Salt City Market, this restaurant serves fantastic, authentic middle eastern fare. I had a chicken shawarma wrap (they do real shawarma on the spit). The meat was juicy and tender and the wrap grilled well. Meat was seasoned and had some pickled veg inside. The fries were hot and crisp. They have traditional plates of beef, chicken, and lamb. They also have falafel, hummus, salads, kebabs, authentic middle eastern drinks, and more. Reasonably priced. Fast and friendly service, fresh and tasty food. Love the vibe at Salt City, the comfy rocking soft seats by the window, the curvy metal chairs that are way more comfy than they look, the fun upward seating with pillows, the market that has way better drinks than your average soda and healthy ones too, the many options for food which I find so difficult to choose from as I am finding each to be as good as it smells and looks. So today we chose Baghdad both getting the beef shawarma with rice and salad. For a slight upcharge I went with tabouleh for my salad as it is a favorite of mine and it was the best I have had with the mint popping through the tart lemon dressing over just the right amount of tomato and bulgar. The shawarma was many thin slices of seasoned beef over the tender bed of rice drizzled with sauce. A side of tzatziki added because it's so good of course. We picked up drinks at the market topping off our mid afternoon Linner with leftovers to go and no room for dessert this time. The staff were warm and friendly. We were so impressed with Salt City Market that we came back as we were passing through Syracuse again. There are so many wonderful options it's hard to choose what to order. We wanted to circle back to try Baghdad. The week before we were drooling over the chicken, beef and lamb shawarmas that were cooking. We arrived late on a Saturday afternoon in time for an early dinner and were sad to hear that all the varieties were already sold out. Definitely a bit disappointing but understandable since they looked and smelled amazing. We ordered the beef kebabs which came with a plate of rice and some pickled veggies and a yogurt sauce. The food was cooked quickly and was very fresh. The meat was tender and utilized a wonderful assortment of spices. The veggies and yogurt sauce were nice complements and played off the seasoning. Finally got a chance to check out the Salt City Market and started my first eating endeavor at the Baghdad restaurant. Outside of needing to figure out how to expeditiously move customers in and out, the wait was long but the food was good. For a mid day lunch the choices included 3 appetizers: Bulgar Kibbeh, Vegetable egg roll, and the eggplant salad. Hot out of the oven the Bulgar Kibbeh had a nice crispy outside with warm beef inside. There was a hint of nutmeg which offered a nice flavorful combination. Next up the Vegetable egg roll. These too had a good crispy outside with a combination of vegetables inside. My gripe on these would be they were on the smaller side and the amount of "filling" was scant. They too were good. Lastly, and notably the pièce de rèsistance of the 3 was the eggplant salad. Definitely unique and not what I was expecting. A combination of eggplant, onion and some sort of sauce made the appetizer a unique and different experience. Definitely give it a try if you are an fan of eggplant. This has to be some of the best Shawarma I've had in my life. And who knew that it would be in the Salt City Market in Syracuse, New York? For only $8.99, I got a beef shawarma salad. Along with the typical veggies you'd expect in a mediterranean salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, olives) they put some delicious sweet/tangy sauce on the beef that made it stand out so well. Plop some tahini on the sucker and you've got yourself one delicious Iraqi takeout. The owner is an Iraqi refugee, whose family resettled in Syracuse in 2014 and has a few other restaurants in town. On my second trip back to Salt City Market I had to try their offerings. Perhaps my favorite food group is Mediterranean food because of the yummy vegan options. I ordered the falafel plate and after a fairly long wait I was presented a plate full of food. My falafel was very hot and crispy and served on a white roll with an extra roll on the side. A lot of bread for what I would normally think of as a fairly healthy meal. There wasn't enough hummus and it was served with a small side of shredded lettuce, shaved red onion, cucumbers and tomatoes. Those portions could have been much larger and the bread serving much smaller. The hummus was good. Was this the best takeout I ever had in my entire life? I ordered a family platter while at an overnight event at the Fairgrounds and was completely blown away. This is a great spot for delicious Mediterranean food. I grew up eating these dishes because of my background so I know good Arab food when I taste it. And they do not slack here.
