    Breakfast bagel

What a cozy and beautiful place. Went there for a quick bagel breakfast and I wasn't disappointed. So fresh and so many options to choose from. If you get a coffee they also have a wall full of mugs and you choose your own that I found pretty cool. Super quick service you order at the cash, pay and they bring it to your table.

Wow, just wow! Everything here was amazing. My boyfriend enjoyed the hot chocolate. If you get a meal it comes with a side salad and soup. The bagel was soooo soft. You can definitely tell that the bagel is baked fresher daily. I was a little disappointed that I missed their infamous Benedict by 3 mins ! (Kitchen closes at 3pm). I definitely would like to return and try their Benedict's !!

I was not a fan of the food. The tomato soup was not good at all. It made me really sick. I had the turkey bagel and it was okay. The service was great.

Pricey house cream cheese with bacon (?) in it.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh with three stars for Bagel St-Lo: the space reminds me of a 90s neighbourhood cafe and the staff were downright the sweetest (and honestly really patient when I walked clearly not knowing what I was in for). I think where I can't justify a higher rating is in the product: these are almost New York style bagels (this is Verdun, ya'll!). On top of that, selection is limited: sesame, poppy, plain and cheese, and I found the taste factor just OK. What kinda got me bummed out was the cheese bagel: it's legit just a plain bagel with a piece of cheese on top and significantly pricier than the other options. That's not a cheese bagel, people! Onto the more positive: when I visited on Saturday they were also selling $15 giant boxes of past-prime veg that local shops were passing. I got SO much good food for $15! This also definitely added to the nice community vibes as it shows they're committed to reducing waste. I also picked up their house cream cheese which is pretty good but wayyyyy too expensive. Honestly, I dig this place enough that I'll probably be back, but not really for the product, much more for the nice staff and community vibes.

*COVID-19 EDITION* A M B I A N C E Don't forgot to wear your mask inside! Adorable coffee and bagel shop located in Verdun! Amazing spot to grab a latte then walk down Wellington! C L E A N L I N E S S Pretty good! I have no complaints! O V E R A L L Q U A L I T Y These bagels are wonderful! Growing up on St. Visitor's bagels I've been spoiled, but these are a close second for me. My partner likes these more! The bagels are super tasty and less dense than others. They also have custom homemade cream cheese! I've tried the "Leak and Bacon" cream cheese and it's AH-MAZING. I also tried the "Sun-dried tomatoes & Bacon" but it exploded in my white bag and stained the bag, tasted great but mixed feelings over the whole experience. My sister tried the "Jalapeno" cream cheese and I had a bite and it wasn't too hot which is nice! I can't do spicy food but this was tasty! They make good coffee and have different vegan and cow milk options. When ordering breakfast, my partner believes that they serve an inacceptable amount of beans! We want more beans! C O S T Pretty standard brunch costs! But the bagels are wonderful and quite inexpensive! Highly recommend! W A I T T I M E S If you're just coming for bagels or coffee the wait is very quick! However, if you want to sit down and order breakfast and lunch there is a short wait! P A R K I N G & L O C A T I O N On Verdun and Argyle. Really close to the Wellington walkway in Verdun. The street is less busy than Wellington, but still has some cute shops. There's paid parking on the street and free parking on side streets!

First time checking out bagel st-low and it was nice. The place was packed for a Monday afternoon inside and out so it had to be good. Got the blt which was really good and crispy bacon just how I like it :) The salad is nice that comes with it but should be more as the bagel isn't very filling. Will be back for the blueberry cream cheese and bagels :)

A great place to go to have a relaxing brunch in a cozy cafe and pick up bagels for the week before you leave. The brunch menu is yummy and the ambience is just right - a bit of bustling but still nice and cozy. The bagels are a bit on the denser side, so they are really great when toasted - it will be crunchy on the outside and chewy in the inside. Also, if you want to pick up meals from the store freezer, I recommend the lasagna! Tastes homemade.

Jamie W and I didn't waste any time trying this one. It was a bus ride away from our hotel, and we were anticipating a long line when we arrived in the morning. Surprisingly there was a queue but not for Fairmount. It was for the obviously popular gnocchi next door at Drogheria Fine. Lucky for us we walked right in and didn't really have a chance to think about our order. The no-nonsense order takers were not up for chit-chat, so we impulsively decided on two C$1.40 Sesame and one C$1.50 Cinnamon & Raisin (Photo 8) plus a couple of C$0.80 mini-packets of Philadelphia cream cheese. There wasn't much to our interaction, so we took our haul across Boulevard Saint-Laurent to Parc Saint-Michel where we found an open picnic table. We immediately noticed how much softer they were than the ones we were used to. They were also a bit smaller which we didn't mind at all. The sesame bagels were nicely aerated, and the cinnamon and raisin one had a sweetness beyond the raisins. It turned out the cream cheese was somewhat superfluous, even though we ordered it more out of habit. As it turned out, we did end up trying a bagel from St-Viateur later that day, and I'm here to report that we are Team Fairmount. There wasn't a huge difference between the two, and St-Viateur has the advantage of showing how they make their bagels, but flavorwise, Fairmount has the slight edge. I've eaten bagels my entire life and honestly never thought they were anything that special. But when we had the chance to visit Montreal, this was one of the first places on our list. When we arrived, there was a long line, and we waited about 35 minutes. Normally, that would make me question whether it's worth it, but this time it absolutely was. I ordered the smoked salmon with fig jam on an everything bagel, and it was incredible. The bagel was perfectly fresh, with a chewy interior and just the right amount of crispness on the outside. Combined with the smoked salmon and the sweetness of the fig jam, it was one of the best bagel sandwiches I've ever had. I rarely say this, but it was 100% worth the wait. My only disappointment is that I didn't have enough time to try their famous competitor so I could compare the two. I guess that just gives me another reason to come back to Montreal!

I looked at Mom and Dad. We left. But Mom does not give up easily when carbohydrates are involved, so we returned on Friday and successfully secured a table on the street patio. Much better. The patio is right out front and turned out to be an excellent place for me to sit with Mom and watch Mile End go by. You go inside to order and pay first, then they bring everything out to your table. Very convenient because when you're finished, you can simply get up and continue your adventures. Mom ordered the Traditional bagel with smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion and capers. It also arrived with two tiny slices of melon, which I assume constitutes dessert in the bagel industry. Dad ordered two plain bagels with butter. Please study the accompanying photograph carefully. You will see Dad actively eating a bagel while I sit approximately 18 inches away staring directly at the table. This was not an accidental composition. This was a cry for help. Mom had an iced coffee and Dad had a Diet Coke. The humans agreed the bagels were worth coming back for, and I have to admit the entire operation is pretty fun -- busy, casual and very Montreal. From a dog perspective, the outdoor patio works well and I was perfectly happy hanging out with the humans. However, no water bowl was offered during our visit. Dogba's verdict: 3 paws out of 5. Famous Montreal bagels: worth the return trip Street patio: excellent People watching: first-rate Mom's Traditional: very popular with Mom Dad's two buttered bagels: ambitious Iced coffee break: Mom approved Two tiny pieces of melon: apparently dessert Dogba's bagel allocation: suspiciously low Proof Dad ate directly in front of me: documented Would I return? Absolutely. It's a classic Montreal stop, the patio made it easy for me to join the humans, and I take my responsibility to investigate iconic local foods very seriously. Next time, however, I will be monitoring Dad's second bagel much more closely.

OK, maybe I'm just speculating, but the rivalry story worked on Jamie W and me. It wasn't even an hour after eating the Fairmount bagels that we found ourselves here. If I was to judge the two competitive shops on optics and friendliness, St-Viateur would win hands down. The moment we opened the front door, we were dumbstruck by the sea of freshly baked bagels laid out to be picked up by the cashier. Behind the bagels, a couple of the more seasoned staff were taking bagels out of the huge brick oven (Photo 5). None of that was visible at Fairmount nor was a smile. Here the cashier was really friendly. He also happily accepted a credit card for payment. In a way, it wasn't a fair fight because we bought three bagels at Fairmount and had room for just one from here. We chose the C$1.50 Maple Apple Bagel (Photo 7) and noticed it had a slightly crunchier crust than the similar Cinnamon and Raisin from Fairmount. The moment we walked in, we were greeted, seated, and asked if it was our first visit. When we said yes, the gentleman immediately pointed to the smoked meat sandwich highlighted on the wall and said, "This is what you want." No further convincing needed! And wow, was he right. The sandwich was piled high with incredibly tender, melt-in-your-mouth smoked meat, tucked between two relatively thin slices of bread with just a touch of mustard. What impressed me most was the balance. Despite the generous amount of meat, nothing felt overwhelming. The seasoning was beautifully restrained, allowing the richness and flavor of the meat to speak for itself. Sometimes the simplest combinations are the hardest to perfect, and Schwartz's has clearly mastered this one. The atmosphere is an experience in itself. Imagine a restaurant the size of a small apartment, absolutely buzzing with people, yet operating like a well-oiled machine. Guests are constantly coming and going, the staff moves with impressive efficiency, and somehow everything feels organized rather than chaotic. Our food arrived almost immediately, and the service was genuinely friendly and attentive. Walking in, I was immediately greeted by stairs which led up to the main production area. All of the bakes were arranged on the back-wall perimeter of the space separated from the pedestrians by a glass wall. The color scheme was mostly black to contrast the bright yellow of the bags and signage. The arrangement of the bakes, combined with the color scheme and modern aesthetics, resulted in a stunning, visually striking presentation.
