Bagels on Greene (with clearly more than the bagels that I admittedly didn't try) has a hodgepodge of menu items that feels as if every option was derived from a random ethnic cuisine generator. But given that the inhabitants of ethnically diverse Montréal bring together so many beautiful cutures, it ain't a bad thing.. and during my trip Bagels on Greene made me want to try out an eclectic assortment at this cafeteria-style, totally friendly eatery! What initially perked my interest was from their vegan Indian selection. Found myself eager to test out their Vegan Chicken Vindaloo, which they heated up for me from the prepared food fridge. (The range in Bagel on Greene's prepared food set warrants a further investigation if you live nearby.) Since it was something I've enjoyed all my life, I order their round, baked traditional Potato Knish... somewhat in size between the frozen Mini Knishes my mom always made as a side and the larger New York Lower East Side's Yonah Schimmel version. Of course, the Karnautzel long sausages caught my attention. I was expecting to get brown Deli mustard, but only Yellow and Dijon were available. Finally, two new for me Zero Sugar sodas to drink: 7up and Dr Pepper. Note - Other options available beyond a bagel/deli selection include: a small buffet tablet with other heated items, Spring Rolls, Spicy Potato & Vegetable Rolls, Cheese Rolls, non-traditional Knishes, Pakoras, cookies like Gingerbread Men. They also have meat dishes, if that's your thing. Opted to eat inside Bagels on Greene, although the covered outdoor tables looked great. My Vindaloo tasted great... the vegan chicken substitute did not make me miss the chicken!!! The Knish, topped with poppy seeds, was pretty good. The Karnautzel, less my thing, wasn't that bad too! Those Zero Sugar sodas... didn't miss the sugar either! All good! Bagels on Greene isn't a fancy place, but the reasonably priced, wide offering of tasty items should provide something of interest for a meal. While I can't speak about their bagels, it's a place I'd recommend checking out yourself, if that's your thing. read more

I am from NYC and my preference is for the NYC bagel style. That said, when in Montreal, I eat Montreal bagels. I have been to the two famous bagel bakeries and had their bagels straight from the oven. I have been to several others as well. Bagels on Greene is the best that I have tasted of the Montreal variety and is a worthy alternative of a good NYC bagel. The dough is dense and baked to crisp crust perfectly. There is subtle sweetness from the Montreal honey water and a very subtle spice that has been added as well. I have had bagels here several times and I highly recommend them especially if you come from NYC. read more

Yes, yes, I know the most highly reviewed bagel spot in Montreal is St. Vincent. Sure, I could've gone there and waited in line... but I could also go somewhere a little more under-the-radar and have a quiet Saturday morning bagel and schmear without a ton of fuss. I chose the latter. Bagels on Greene is a quaint little marche/market with a vast array of baked goods, including wood-grain bagels, as well as fresh juices, coffee and corner store items. A little smattering of a lot of necessary in one's morning routine. Of of course I got a bagel! Everything toasted with cream cheese. Plus a tumeric and ginger juice. Simple and oh-so-delicious. Pretty average with different counters and some tables (outside as well). The goods: I only had a knish and a spring roll. I found both to be ordinary and lacking in flavour, and the spring roll was very, very oily so I only had one bite before tossing it. I can't speak for the bagels so may give those a try. Tried the everything bagel with salmon, capers, tomatoes, and onions. So perfect! Also got a chicken empanada which was tasty as well They have loads of juices, smoothies, espresso, coffee, and even the nespresso machine. This place is a one stop shop! First off didn't know they had a Indian Buffett as soon as you walk in smells amazing In there. You can buy it pre packaged or eat right there and there. You have all the breads in the back with bagels and the corner has stuffed bagels with cheese and Danishes and all kinds of yummy desserts. The middle fridge is all the salads they have about 20 different ones to choose from. (Beets and goat cheese and pine nuts or just a beat) chicken salads with cranberry and almonds and even a delicious broccoli one with cheese and a white sauce for it. They have small medium and large containers which is helpful and little tasters out to sample. Bagels are super fresh so eat them as soon as you get in. (They sell Cream cheese there) so you don't gotta make a second stop. This place has a nice little section to sit but I would recommend taking it to go because it's big portions lol. AMAZING. Best bagels and lox I've ever had (I have to be careful saying that, my mother grew up in New York...) - lots of capers and delicious smoked salmon. My wife loved her bagel and cream cheese. We also rather enjoyed our mango lassi smoothie; the cilantro one was okay. We felt a bit disappointed by the Papillon/Butterfly pastries. The bagel stuffed with cheese and topped with sugar wasn't too bad, but it was perplexing... maybe the texture confused us. A couple things: One, this is the only place I went to in Montreal where English seemed to be the primary language (we were first addressed in English, the staff spoke to each other in English...don't worry, Francophones, they spoke to customers in both.) Two, the place looks like a bagel shop (expected) with lots of deli-style sandwiches and salads (expected), but also has a lot of Indian food (not expected, but a pleasant surprise!). If I go back, I'll make sure to try it out and grab some of the many pickles and chutneys on the salad bar. Prices are reasonable, staff is friendly, and the bagels are the star. Great little place. You walk in and take a number then you can purchase fresh bagels and fresh salads. Egg salad, spicy tuna, tuna salad, chicken salad among over a dozen others. They have pre made pastries, pre made bagel pizza and pre made laktas. They have a fresh pre made juices and to go giant soups. Frozen and fresh. I was visiting from the states and stumbled across this gem of a deli. No need to go to the tourist spots for bagels, this place has a wood burning oven and cooks it the same way. They have a variety of breakfast options and is quite delicious. You enter from the right side and someone takes your order. I love Montreal bagels. the cashier taking our order at the front was very sweet and they have a large selection of items! service was quick but i ordered a latte at the coffee bar and the young ginger barista was crazy rude. she had a super bad attitude & rolled her eyes and acted annoyed when i ordered a latte LOL. she was disgusted with the next customer too who didn't even order, just picked out a premade drink. hope her day gets better. also the latte was 90% milk. food was pretty good no complaints. overall the experience was mid. read more

I love cheese Danish! It's my favorite thing to buy at this eclectic "deli/bakery/cafe". That being said, I'm pretty picky about them. This place has these cherry cheese Danish that are AMAZING, bit strangely, they are not called "Danish" here. They call them cherry cheese "bagels", but don't let the name fool you, these horse-shoe shaped pastries of cherry cheese deliciousness are definitely classic cheese Danish! So, as I mentioned above before, this is a bit of an eclectic place. Aside from the usual assortment of baked goods, sandwiches, coffee and bottled beverages this place has an ENORMOUS selection of Vegetarian and Vegan foods. They have a hot and cold "salad bar" style buffet which is priced by weight which includes several Indian style favorites such as Butter Chicken, only, made with vegetarian mock chicken. They also have a Mexican food station with Mexican fare and sandwiches with both the standard tuna/chicken/egg salad, cold cuts, etc... as well as VEGETARIAN versions of many of these, including a very good mock-chicken salad. The place is a little low on atmosphere, probably better as a take-out place than dine in (although there is ample table space inside). Walking by you would never tell this was the Mecca of "mixed" dining (catering simultaneously to omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans), but this place definitely fits the bill! read more

I am not sure if maybe I am just used to bagels tasting completely different in the US, but my egg and cheese bagel had NO taste. I tasted the egg separately from the cheese and then the cheese and then the bagel and the only taste was burnt onions from the bagel. There was no salt, pepper, butter or other seasonings -- extremely bland. We also got a BLT and it was decent, but nothing special. The service was pretty quick, but I will not be returning for another bagel. Also, it is more of a deli with seating than a particular bakery or bagel shop. read more

Such a cute neighborhood place, with some real kick@ss bagels! Everyone knows about st viateur and fairmount, but this place can really hold its ground against those two bagel giants. The bagels are made fresh, and they have a wood burning stove which is key to their tasty flavour. I would say the bagels are slightly thicker in width than the standard montreal bagel, but not as thick as a new york style bagel. I actually prefer them this way, as it is more amenable to making sandwiches or cutting in half to be slathered with cream cheese, and not so thick as to be ridiculously dense and bready. These ones are nice and soft and the right amount of fluffy, with a sesame coated outer layer that is slightly sweeter than others I've tried. I bought 6 packaged to go and they came presliced which was nice, and they crisped beautifully in a toaster. Even my friends who live 3 minutes from both st viateur and fairmount said that these bagels were great. Aside from the bagels they also have sandwiches and salads and even Indian food...really showcases Montreals diversity! read more

Stopped here for bagel sandwiches before heading back to the US. I thought the sandwiches were just okay (good overall). Everyone else seemed to really like theirs. Mine took longer to make because they forgot. We also bought some cookies. The cookies looked freshly made, but they were not. They were pretty mediocre. Ordered the everything bagel and mango smoothie - so soooo good! Had jalapeno spicy chips (crunchy!), mango cilantro salad (fresh!) and macaroni and cheese as sides. These guys are a total lifesaver. Not only do they offer us west-centric folks a tasty and fresh bagel option, but they also have everything you could ask for from a bakery of this caliber. Some of the highlights of Bagels on Greene: -Early bird breakfast special: last I checked it was a coffee and a breakfast sandwich (on a fresh bagel with a fresh fried egg, no less) for five bucks. Timmies isn't even a contender with this deal. -An abundance of vegan sandwich and salad fare. I'm talking vegan chicken salad sandwich, general tau chik'en, beautiful meal salads, etc. They're total beasts when it comes to alternative diets. -Tasty lunch and snack options: I'm a sucker for their knishes! Sometimes when I know I'm going to have a really busy week I load up on knishes and bagels to make things run smoother on the lunch front. Bagels on Greene to the rescue! -Unpopular opinion: the quality of the bagels (wood fire) competes with the classic tourist options. I'll admit it's not exactly the same but my partner holds the opinion that the everything bagels here are the best in town. I'm in no position to argue. -They deliver! This place was great! We ordered a jumbo bagel (sesame/poppy) with lox which was piled high with lox, capers, onion, tomato and a bit of cream cheese. The other bagel we ordered was an onion bagel with egg salad, lettuce, swiss cheese and tomato. Both were very good but the lox bagel was the better of the two. We also got a spinach twist and feta twist which are well worth the (.75 cents)! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars (not 5) is because they have a strange ordering system. When we ordered, we tried to order 2 bagels at once and they seemed confused. So, they took one order and then another employee came to ask us for the second bagel order while we stood at the counter. It just seems like it would be easier to make it all at once and order from one employee. No worries though, it was all good. read more

If you're vegetarian or vegan and are in Montreal, you HAVE to eat here. They're one of the first places in Canada to offer Beyond Meat products (and the only one I've ever seen with their amazing sausage). They also have a buffet style counter where you can choose from tons of different vegan and vegetarian "meat" or veggie dishes, their Indian dishes are particularly amazing. You can even get breakfast tofu scramble or a vegan "chicken salad" on a Montreal bagel. Honestly some of the best dishes I've ever eaten all in the same place. Everything is clearly labeled, and the staff are very knowledgeable and will be more than happy to answer your questions. Forget the plant-based chain restaurants popping up to take advantage of trends, you can really tell the difference when you see the passion that goes into the food here. A friend of mine had recommended this place to me. I had gone today with my friend to try their bagels for breakfast. The place was occupied with customers on a Sunday morning at 9 am with -3 degree wind blowing on your face. Their menu options for the breakfast was great . They make their bagels fresh with a coal fired oven. You buy any stuff for breakfast , the coffee is free, well that's what the lady at the counter had said to me . You order your breakfast and pay at the other counter and tuck into your food. The food was great for the prices . I ordered a breakfast wrap, blueberry turnover , egg roll and bagel with herbs. The food was delicious . My advice for the fellow yelpers, if you are in downtown or near Westmount or feeling a pinch on your wallet , do check out this place, you will love it . read more

Stumbled into this place starving after a quick hike last week. Was overwhelmed by and confused by how many choices there are! From heaped salad bowls and bagels, to Indian food, chances are you'll find something tasty to eat. We found it overpriced (3 salads for $12) because they weren't generous with their portions. Recently moved into the area and was excited to have a solid bagel shop in the area. While the fresh bagels are OK, I have sampled the other products - from the cookies to the Indian dishes kept lukewarm in the buffet in the front - and it's a complete disaster. Bland, overcooked, and generally disappointing. The lackluster attitude of the staff made it worse. And of course, as a Westmount establishment, everything is 25%+ more expensive than you'd find elsewhere. Skip it and get something at the grocery store counters in Alexis Nihon Plaza. read more

I would have given a solid 4 stars but I found on both visits the service to be blunt with some attitude that left me the feeling that my patronage wasn't appreciated. This place is a very unusual dining experience - they have different stations serving different food. There's a Mexican menu, Indian menu, breakfast menu, smoothie section, coffee section, salad bar - the list goes on. The service wasn't great and the lofty counters behind which the employees serve make it difficult for customers to get their attention. The decor is appalling and the tables were dirty and trash was littered on the floor. I tried the Indian menu; tip: grab a Thali and get what you like and then the cashier weighs it for a price. The dishes were okay (I hated the Aloo Paratha but the veggie and chicken dishes weren't bad) - my hunt for good, authentic Indian food in Montreal continues. read more

Sesame bagel with cream cheese: everything you'd expect from a montreal bagel, with generous amounts of cream creese Thali: Choice of rice, 2 sides, naan and a snack. Great price and delicious! Small size was enough to make me full and satisfied :) Even though it's a bar-style cafe, I didn't know how to order so someone came out and explained every item + put my meal together. A very nice place to have lunch - lots of seating and a lot of variety to eat. My kids love the Indian food buffet section (you pay by weight of the plate). They also serve many different made to order bagel sandwiches (hence the name). There is a smoothie bar and coffee bar. It is a good place to bring children. read more

BEST BAGELS EVER!! And I say that after having eaten Fairmont Bagels. They are all boiled, then baked in a wood fired oven. The poppy seed bagels there are beyond wonderful.
