I was in New York for a weekend and stopped by Bagel Express on my way to visit a family member at St. Charles. From the moment I walked in, I was hit with that New York deli feel. The kind of place you just don't find anywhere else, especially not back home in Virginia Beach. The inviting feel when you walk in, the regulars chatting up the staff, the air filled with the wonderful smells of fresh bacon, baked bagels, and savory spices. For my order, I went with a classic sesame bagel with cream cheese. It was absolutely fantastic. Soft on the inside, perfectly chewy, and the cream cheese was delicious. My dad was craving something a little different, so he got a BLT with chipotle mayo and avocado on toast. He raved about it the entire meal, saying it was one of the best BLTs he's ever had. It came with macaroni salad and a pickle (which I obviously stole from him). Even though this was my first time at Bagel Express, since I'm not local to Setauket, the whole experience was great. The quality, service, and authentic deli experience are definitely worth a stop. I'm already looking forward to coming back the next time I'm in town. Can only speak to the bagels and egg sandwiches but they are great! Bagels are big, fresh and chewy - even later in the day. They have an easy to use online system which I highly recommend because the inside of the store is a little chaotic. Even when you order online, you have to push your way to the front and get someone's attention for your order, because the pickup window for online and phone orders is the same as pickup for in store orders. Don't love the slightly high stress pickup process, but the sandwiches are totally worth it. Service is friendly enough, and they have a ton of lunch options in addition to bagels. Somehow all the neighborhood bagel spots are closing, bagel express is still boiling those bagels. This place used to be called Fratellis Bagel, I guess Mamma Fratelli got chased out by The Goonies. They make a nice bagel, walking inside gives more of a deli vibe than a bagel spot. I ordered a B.E.C. with S.P.K. and they did a great job! The bacon ratio was good and I asked for a soft scrambled egg. They made a damn good BEC today. My normal spot was closed due to a water issue, I think Bagel Express made my breakfast choice rotation. Enjoy! read more

I frequent this place when I'm in town visiting my in laws and it's amazing. The bagels come out fresh and chewy, I don't even need to warm it up when I get home. A good bagel to me is one that is soft and chewy on the inside but the outside doesn't resist getting ripped off, and a heavy layer of cream cheese. I will say that while the bagels are nice and fresh and chewy, the exterior does put up more of a fight than I'm used to with other places (but mostly in the city). It was pleasantly warm the most recent time I got it but other times they haven't been as warm and less chewy. Also the layer of cream cheese isn't as thick as I'd maybe like and as for the scallion cream cheese, it was lacking in scallions. This place is a staple for Stony Brook students though and is a solid place to get your bagel fix. read more

Fratelli's is my go to Bagel/ Egg sandwich place on Long Island. I normally stop by with Nicole when getting a quick brunch. They have egg sandwich cards which lets you get a free one after ten purchases! Also you get a free coffee or juice with a purchase of an egg sandwich. Wanted to try something new and had a great experience. Music was nice, food was good and self serve coffee was great. Food was ready quickly. You can go to any store that's not this one and find a bagel that actually hits the spot. I pass this bagel store time to time and today, I was in the area and decided I would give it a try. As soon as you walk in, there was no greeting from the eight employees behind the counter. The store set up is different so I was unsure where to go to order. Somehow, this annoyed the employee behind the counter. I didn't see the bagels at first because they're very far off to the side, you can't see them unless you walk all the way down the counter. I politely inquired if any bagels were left. He scoffed and said you do know you walked into a bagel store, dont you? I ignored the rude comment considering it is my first time in the store and how could I know their store set up if it is my first visit and the bagel display is not fully visible. I proceeded to order an egg sandwich. I said everything bagel, bacon egg cheese, salt pepper ketchup, and the eggs over medium please. He cuts me off while I'm speaking and points out that I should say the way I want my eggs cooked at the very beginning of the order or they always assume they're fried. It seems stupid to mention but what?? Why does it matter what order I say it in as long as it is said? I've never heard that before and he went out of his way to say it with an attitude, like I'm bothering him. I ignored that comment as well. I was given a ticket and stood there for a second and the guy is mumbling under his breath to the other employees. Too early to deal with this so I stood by the front register. While waiting, my egg sandwiches were ready before the rest of my order, the guy asked what else I got and while I'm telling him, he cuts me off and asks the guy who took my bagel order because I guess I wasn't talking fast enough for him? The staff was extremely rude. I was blown away by how poor the customer service is. I was being given an attitude the whole time during my order FOR NO REASON AT ALL. I'm polite so I'm not gonna cause a scene but I was pretty shocked and uncomfortable the entire experience. And after dealing with all of that, he got the egg sandwich completely wrong, probably because he was too busy instructing me that I have to say the way I would like my eggs cooked first. I've worked in the food business for a little over six years now. I would never make snarky remarks or give a customer an attitude like that. Honestly, if I were you, I would avoid this place at any cost. Their food is not good enough for the attitude they give and it's not worth the grief. Owner is buddy-buddy with some clients and will literally ignore all other clients around when his friends are there. They have made fun of the food I'm ordering a few times (I order bagels with no CC and put on my on dairy free CC because I have an allergy. Why do they care and make comments?!) Have been to this place only twice. Never again. When my family was there the first time, they pretended they did not understand what we were saying. I guess we had to to speak Perfect English for them to understand. Or maybe louder. The cashier was holding his ears when talking to us. It was quite a show. Same thing happened the second time. Very rude. I was told at the end that they only take cash. They charged my card anyway when I told them I did not have cash on me.
