I have been lucky enough to have Barbara's help with several dogs over the years.  From dogs with a bite history who have sent people to the hospital to puppy mill dogs who are shut down because they only know fear to wild adolescent dogs who don't have any idea how to effectively communicate with people, she is my go-to trainer/behaviorist. I love the question she asks, how she approaches each dog, and how she only uses positive reinforcement to guide the training. The quality I admire the most in Barbara's training is her ability to meet the dog where it is at.  If the task being asked of a dog is too hard for the dog to successfully complete, she finds a way to scale it back so the dog and the family working with dog can succeed. Barbara brings an optimism backed by her vast experience to each training session and she always takes the time to evaluate the dog so she's able to create an effective training regimen. Barbara is great at explaining the psychology of dogs to humans, which is specific by breed. The exercises she provides are simple and fun to do with your pet, and really do modify their behavior if done repeatedly. Plus, your pet will really enjoy the exercises and their extra interaction with you. The approach requires a long term view and repeated exercises over many months, so don't expect immediate changes. You will need to put in the work, and also need change your approach to how your pet interacts with humans outside of your core family. At times, the approach will feel slow if you are looking for a "magic bullet" to fix behavioral issues, but she is building foundational skills with your pet, and that takes time SO BE PATIENT. I would recommend Barbara to others without hesitation. We did our sessions with her remotely and still found them to be effective. We did have some issues with her power going out and missing appointments over our time together. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! BADDogs has always been our go to. For the past 18 years we have had the pleasure to take all of our dogs there. We've experience both group sessions and 1:1 sessions. One thing we've learned is that it's the person that needs to be trained more so than the dog. Not just Barbara but her staff that I have worked with have been consistent as well as honest and direct. This I appreciate more than anything. The consultation did not even come with a report of my dogs behavior or correction activities to try at home. BADdogs is very important to me because my dog is hopefully going to be my service dog. The force free training is incredible! I absolutely LOVE that my dog is learning without the use of choke collars and instead is learning with all positivity and earned rewards. It makes training so much fun for both me and my dog. Barbara is always there when I need answers to a question, and I ask A LOT of questions! The team is patient with me as well. When I don't understand something they take the time to make sure that I do, which I really appreciate. I've been going to BADdogs since my pup was 8 weeks old and he is now 8 months old and we will continue with BADdogs for a year of training. I am very disappointed with this business, we received terrible service and now I found out that this business silenced me by deleting or hiding my review about this business. If my review wasn't removed then @Carla from the review posted 6 days ago could of save herself some money and headache Do not give them your time or money unless you are willing to pay about $3000 to be belittle and talked down to. We took our puppies in for behavioral issues which includes what we think to be resource guarding and for unwanted barking. We should of noticed the red flags but we were naive due to some of the good reviews on yelp. Both training session consist of them doing exercise which involve ALOT of treats, so many treats that our puppies will not eat their food for 2 days and the best part was she was on her phone/computer 90% of the time. There were some uncomfortable moments that we brushed off because we wanted to give Barbara a benefit of a doubt but then it happened again and again until she made us felt so bad that we don't want to continue the remaining 8 sessions. The worst part is that we brought it up to her attention then she dismissed how we felt about the matter then continue to say no one has complained about that before. We kindly asked for a partial refund for the remaining unattended sessions because we want to make sure that she gets the money for the sessions that we did attend, we asked for that partial refund so we can find a trainer that would be more willing to work with us and not belittle us in the process, but she refused due to "legal and liability ramifications". she asked us to clarify, and we did provide her with plenty of situation that made us felt uncomfortable, but she refused to see our point of view and gaslighted us. These were some of the points and issues we brought to her attention but I guess it wasn't valid enough to even get a partial refund. - During consultation, she asked us why we choose the breed and we explained that we heard they are loving, loyal, intelligent and easy to train then we felt a lot of judgment coming from her when she said " It's because they're cute right?" This was that naive moment that was mentioned. - We almost missed out first session because she double booked, we corrected her and told her that our appointment was at 2pm but she kept insisting it was at 12pm. She didn't admit she was wrong until I sent her the screenshot of our conversation about the appointment time. - The first session one of our puppy became aggressive with the other one and it seems to be something treat or attention related, we looked to Barbara and waited for some instructions or any type of guidance but there was not at that moment. After a few more episodes she yelled at us "You need to feed her until she stops" We felt like this could of been explained in a better way for us to understand why our puppy was acting out but it was never addressed then she ended the session. -We were in the waiting room for the 2nd session and the puppies got excited and there was no barking. We didn't know but midway into the training session Barbara brought it up in a condescending tone and told us that we needed to occupied them with exercise in the waiting room before going in. We felt like there was no clear instructions or expectation for us to do that and it should of been brought up before the 1st session. -Barbara asked us what time we fed our puppies and we told her 9am and 6pm(we previously fed them 3 times a day but was instructed to do 2). Her reaction to our response was patronizing and the worst part was that she didn't even provide us with feedback on what's the best feeding time. -Towards the end of the 2nd session the puppies started barking at some strange banging sound next door and clearly that was one of the issue we mentioned that we would like to addressed. She sat there, listened to them bark so we told her that there's a banging sound next door but she refused to acknowledge that the sound was the trigger to their barking. Also again no clear guidance or direction on what might be causing them to bark or how to help them with this situation, we defaulted doing whatever we can to calm them down which was trying to divert their attention elsewhere and after that she yelled at us again " sit down! stop moving around! rub their butt or whatever" That last encounter was the final straw and we couldn't just sit idle and not say anything so we waited until we got home so that way we can make sure we were composed before we brought it up to her attention. She ignored us for almost 24hrs and felt like at that point that we can not work with her any longer. PART 1 DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE! Earlier this year, we had acquired a puppy and were looking forward to finding an affordable, friendly, and efficient trainer to assist us in training our puppy to be the best he could be. We signed up for the puppy class and we were eager to start. The first class went alright, we sat down, the trainer started off nice. (Started off..) We learned a few basic teaching methods and exercises such as push ups, zen, name recognition, and settle. To Barbara: Do not attempt to write this review off by putting "Hello Folks, we have searched our customer records and have not found a Daniel Z. within them." I know what you do to try to improve your public image, and I want to make it clear to any of you customers out there, that I am a genuine customer who attended BadDogs and their training facility at specifically, building 109. During the first puppy class, everything was normal to start with. We went through the exercises, and the trainer announced for us to release our puppies so that they could get social interaction and a short play-time. We did so. The larger dogs immediately began to jump on, scratch, and poke their head towards the back of our puppy. In which, the owners were of 'white' ethnicity. (This will come into play later, mind you we are of Asian ethnicity). And to anyone reading this from BadDogs, I understand you will instantly jump to the conclusion that the behavior was completely appropriate, and that nothing was of the matter. However, just read till the end, alright? Mind you, the trainer did absolutely nothing in this encounter but say it was completely appropriate. After this, the rest of the class was pretty standard and uneventful. Towards the end, we were quite curious and asked the Trainer to give us some tips and tricks on how to take care of our puppy when he is in an extremely pumped up mood. As, at home he is quite bitey, and likes to jump around and run towards you in a very energetic fashion, sometimes uncontrollably. When approached with this question, the Trainer specifically said, "I cannot tell you this information here, however if you sign up for the Annual Class today, I'll be glad to share this information with you." This sort of, "I cannot tell you, but if you purchase something" saying will soon become a common trend that we saw. At the time we thought nothing too much of it. The second lesson was, not our favorite, to say the least. We arrived and our puppy was doing absolutely fine. However the Trainer instructed us that our treats, which were absolutely his favorites at the time, were of 'too low value' and that we should try meats like chicken. Along with this, whenever we would do an exercise just as instructed, the trainer would always cherry pick on us, calling us out on, "Too slouchy posture" "Not a high enough pitched voice" "Rewarding our puppy too much" "Not rewarding him enough". There was always some form of criticism that aroused towards us. To the other class adult participants, who were NOT of Asian ethnicity, but were doing the EXACT SAME THING we were doing, the trainer said nothing but compliments. "Oh I love your dog!" "Is that a pitbull? He's so cute!!" "You guys are using great treats!" (They were using store-bought treats that were from the EXACT SAME company we brought in this session, but the trainer had nothing to say to them.) After this, the class followed the same sort of *only calling us out* pattern until the end. At the end of this lesson, we asked the Trainer what toys she would recommend for our puppy, as he was getting bored of the toys we had at home. She recommended buying a 30 foot long leash, going to the park, and rolling around a ball for him to chase and exercise with us. We did so. At the next few meetings, we brought in chicken, which was what was recommended to us at the prior session. Once again, as if it couldn't have been predicted, omg.. the trainer picked on us every time and stated that our treats were not high value enough, she recommended that we purchase cheeses such as parmesan and cheddar. WHICH WE DID, go figure! During the 5th class, our dog was extremely energetic and started to jump around and actively participate with the other dogs in the class. Our puppy was engaging in activities exactly similar to that of the dogs the first class. The Trainer who was the exact same lady from our first class, told us to 'call' our puppy, and she put a leash on him. She then instructed that we were not giving him proper treats (We were using the stupid cheeses she instructed us to buy, god damnit. Apologies for the language, I could be cursing right now in this review, but this is an improper forum for that, I hope you can see my frustration), mistraining him on multiple exercises, and threatened that she was not afraid to ban us from the puppy class immediately if we could not change his behavior. This is based on just my first meeting with Barbara and her interactions with our dogs, Max and Maddie. We met for an introduction to see what exactly could be done with issues between the dogs. Nothing major was wrong she explained and put my mind at ease right away. The dogs really seemed interested in her and while there was no hands-on "training" going on, she was watching and commenting on every move they made. She KNEW her stuff! My boyfriend and I have tried almost every dog training available, but nothing was addressing our Australian Cattle Dog's underlying fear and anxiety, she has a history of being terrified of strangers, growling and trembling when anyone who she wasn't familiar with was around. It was truly heartbreaking because our dog is "perfect" with just the two of us: affectionate, attentive listener, loves to please, great at tricks, and really just an all around goofball and joy. Needless to say we came to Barbara in desperate times because we had tried everything else, but I really wish that we started with her! Its been about 5 lessons now and the improvement we see in our dog's confidence is astronomical, some friends (who are strangers to our dog) came over to our house the other day and our dog was so friendly, snuggly, and just happy to be with them! I have top show dogs and Barbara has always started working with them at around 12 weeks. They start with their puppy CGC (Canine Good Citizen) and then to their adult qualification. They are also service dogs and therapy dogs thanks to Barbara. Teaching dogs from a young age makes a huge difference starting their show life. They are well socialized because of her mixed puppy classes which are great. The facility couldn't be more perfect. She has private classrooms and an extra large communal class that has plenty of room to do agility and show training. I keep going back to Bad Dogs as the dogs are happy and couldn't be more excited when they arrive and when they see Barbara they go crazy kissing her. When we are in the area we will stop by to say hello as my girl still loves to join in one of the classes. This is an honest review. Its not a good experience to bring your dog here. We brought our "shih tzu" with an issue of anxiety/ snapping. First 2 sessions, Barbara just sit and let the dog wonder around the room for an hr. Gave a recommendation for a drug to make the dog dizzy. We paid a lot just for this? Without the effects of meds, the dog attitude remains the same. He still snaps and was not even corrected. She never reached out to us as a "customer" on how's the dog doing. Barbara is a brilliant dog behaviorist. I consulted her when an adult Labrador I had adopted from a shelter consistently behaved aggressively toward me. When he bit me on the arm I had the very good luck to be referred to her by the animal shelter. Barbara came to my house, immediately figured out the problem, and within an hour had my dog happy and fully understanding that the food belonged to me, not him. He never jumped on me again, and 11 years later he is an old (for a Lab) sweetheart, gentle and respectful of everyone. What I learned, besides how to interact with my dog, was that there is a whole different kind of dog trainer out there - the highly knowledgeable behaviorists who understand how dogs think. I'm so grateful that I found BADDogs, to get the help that I needed for my dog. When my husband and I adopted our dog, he was incredibly fearful, had "stranger danger", couldn't be handled by humans and had a bite history. As a "foster fail", he pretty much chose us, as he kept running away from or biting other adopters over a period of 13 months. I love that BADDogs taught *me* how to train and help my dog through these things. I had to learn a lot, work hard to modify my own behavior, and put a lot of management tools in place in order to help my dog succeed. I went to the training class for the CGC Canine Good Citizen. It's a decent class, but I've attended and participated with so much training that the class was too basic for us... ...and I REALLY clashed with the trainer! Personality clash overload. She's really attached to her ideas about training and person to person interactions. If you disagree with her ideas, beware. One class was enough for me...and the CGC testing isn't very often. You have to wait and wait and wait...which really sucks when one testing date is available because if you're busy you wait some more. read more

I'm not completely certain what corner of the Internet this unfavorability is cropping from and why it's being directed at Barbara, but I can say with some confidence that it's pretty well unwarranted. I understand that there are some philosophical rifts between different dog training methodologies -- for example, I'm aware that some people think Cesar Millan is the Canine Antichrist. Whatever. I'll leave my personal experience here, take it for what you will. Who Am I: Full disclosure, I've never had a dog before my wife brought home an 8 week old stray puppy. My engineering student brain immediately began devouring all sorts of dog training literature, dog nutrition, "how to raise a puppy" sites, forum pages, and youtube videos. Both my wife and I are educators in our own ways, her as a tenured middle school teacher (herding animals after its own fashion) and I as a former military technical instructor. I don't know anything about training a puppy or dog. Intuitively, I know that puppies are most "malleable" before 14 weeks. Petco's dog training program wouldn't take little Tommy -- they wanted him to get rabies first, which would have been after 14 weeks per the vet's direction. Good thing too; Barbara's program was much cheaper (I imagine by virtue of co-locating with the shelter) and more inclusive. Pay a couple hundred bucks to Petco, get a couple months of training. at BADDogs, they'll handle your dog out to five or six months old, situation depending (she's stated she likes keeping model dogs around to serve as examples). She requires that the vaccinations have at least started, which is in line with ASPCA guidance I've read -- unsocialized animals are at a higher risk of being put down for biting someone or what have you than dying of Parvo. Upon arrival at the Riverside County Animal Shelter, the training rooms are off to the right of the building and seperate from the shelter proper, so you're not exposing your dog to any sort of nastiness or whatever you might be fearful of coming across in there. Barbara's a wonderful, even-tempered, patient instructor. I entered without any bias to training methodologies. I prefer positive reenforcement / operant conditioning techniques, which is what she seems to advance. Great. I'm a blank slate, and shortly after we arrived another pair of owners bring in two adolescent Lab mixes just all kinds of full of energy. By the end of the session, using some pretty common sense techniques reenforced by food treats, she had the lunging, pulling animals lying quietly under the leash. My own dog took to her techniques pretty quickly, and we had a "sit" and "lie down" behavior worked in inside of an hour, and were making good progress towards "shake." We also drilled impulse control very heavily. Not bad for 9 1/2 weeks. At home, the puppy has been doing sprinting laps around the house just before bedtime. Using some of the calming techniques she taught us our first session, we were able to get Tommy settled back down and -- most importantly -- responsive to instructions again. It was pretty wonderful how simple and effective the techniques are, and while I suppose I can learn it from a YouTube video or a book I'd much prefer someone be there to give a little correction to the owner and not just the puppy. I was extremely happy with my session with Barbara, and my wife and I look forward to the coming weeks with her. read more

I agree with Andrea B. We worked with the trainer for 4 sessions plus the initial consultation. She is a nice woman and truly has dogs' best interests in mind. But the bottom line....she is not a very good teacher. In behavior modification for dogs, it is just as important that the owner learn an entirely new approach. This was the problem that we had. We felt that she frequently contradicted herself as we asked questions about changing our approach. As Andrea B. pointed out, she is very attached to her ideas and if you question her, she is quite unclear when explaining. There were many parts of these behavior modification sessions that were VERY UNCLEAR to us. We only hope that we can take some of what we learned to help our dog. If you are considering BADDogs for behavior modification with your fearful or anxious dog, save yourself $700. Everything she had to offer us was in a book that she recommended. Go purchase "Help for Your Fearful Dog: A Step-by-Step Guide to Helping Your Dog Conquer His Fears" by Nicole Wilde. This book was the most helpful! read more

Barbara is an absolute miracle worker. We started one-on-one training with her a few months after adopting a sweet but wild year-old terrier mix. At that time I could barely control him, even with miles of walking each day and as much playtime as I could manage. Within a few sessions, Barbara had absolutely transformed him. She quickly identified that our pup is highly intelligent but has some impulse control issues, so we've focused on giving him tasks that challenge and focus his mind. I first met Barbara from Bad Dogs Inc. 11 years ago when I got Gigi, my affenpinscher. Gigi was 7 months old when I got her. Seriously under socialized and very fearful. I paid Barbara to come for a consult. She is the only certified dog behaviorist in the Inland Empire and she knows her stuff. The patience she showed with me and Gigi along with her expert advise helped my shy puppy blossom into the great dog she is. The consult was for a set number of hours but when we went over, she didn't stop the consult or ask for more money even when I offered. After that experience I didn't hesitate to take other classes with Barbara as I got other dogs. Slacker's Club for improving loose leash walking, clicker training, and most recently puppy class and level 1 obedience. Don't get me wrong, like any training class you get out of it what you put into it. The more you work with your pupsters every day, the faster they will progress. I took advantage of her annual membership - you pay a flat fee for one year and attend as many training classes as you wish.
