Backyard Works installed our fence in 2021 and didn't fill in the posts properly so its sinking. We called 3 times to talk to the owner and were told every time we would get a call back. Now Ryan (the owner) has taken to insulting me on social media instead dealing with the issue like a respectful business owner. Wish I never heard of them. I paid for them to get a permit and they never did. They did the work and I went to the town to get the permit and I was denied the permit. The town said the work was not compliant! They do not return my calls - my mistake hiring this outfit! And to add misery to injury, they refuse to return the $75 I paid them to the permit. I've got to say, Ryan's reply below (business owner) is exactly the problem. To echo other reviews below, the biggest problem with this company was the communication. I'd like to say that was the only problem with them but it's not. Their build quality leaves a lot to be desired too... On the communication front, we were told 16-18 weeks from deposit would be our install date. 19 weeks later, I still hadn't gotten an update. Delays are fine if they're communicated about, which they weren't. It was pulling teeth trying to get an update from these guys. When I finally got an updated install date from them that date slipped too...and you guessed it, took several emails and several calls over more than several days to get an update. Anyway the install finally happened and there were a number of quality issues (that by the way, were exacerbated by communication issues). First the fence was blown apart by a good stiff wind. In their defense, we get some serious wind at our place and it's a solid fence - no gaps for the air to go through. Given that, I'd expect a company with some fencing experience would've noted that and either said "no, we can't install that fence here" or installed it with a bit more rigidity. So several calls later I get someone to come out and they put in a few screws and leave ignoring half of the fence that actually had the issue. So I reached back out to see when they were coming back to finish the job...and it took a threat to call a lawyer to get them to come back and finish up. So they finally came back and secured the rest of the fence. That's it right? Well several days ago I stop by to see that the fence gate had blown past the latch and was now on the wrong side of the fence and thus wouldn't shut. The cause? That initial issue they claimed to have resolved the first time. Still waiting for them to send someone out to fix it... Summary: the saying goes you can have something done right, on time or for the right price but never all three. With these guys I'm not sure you can even have one. Edit 5/13/22 after Ryan replied to me. The defensiveness here is really something. Ryan, to your reply I was referring to the warranty repairs after it was initially installed back in february. I'm tempted to screenshot this slew of emails and phone calls I sent to try to get this fixed. But I'm certain that Ryan would have another excuse for their poor service. Yes I did post this after a recent warranty request because the issue was supposed to have been fixed back in February, your team assured me of it. Quality issues like this have me concerned that the day my warranty runs out there's going to be another nor'easter that you guys apparently didn't plan for and then I'm going to be up the creek to try to repair this thing. So yes I'm a little frustrated that the issue persists. Looking forward to have your team come by and fix it. read more

I requested someone come out and give me a quote on modifying an existing fence. The company gave me every indication they could do the job. I heard NO response. I called several time to get a response. It took 2 week, to only find out they chose to decline the job. Stating they can't get the style fence I have. That's a lie. I have the most basic black aluminum fence as they come. Beyond unprofessional. I'd suggest going elsewhere. read more

In Sep 2022 I contracted to have a gate installed in the fence around our pool. After six months of waiting and repeated calls, most of which were not returned, the company realized they had not ordered the gate. It was finally installed in June 2023. There are two problems, which after repeated calls in the last five months, have not been resolved. You cannot unlock the gate from inside the pool area because you cannot see the lock to insert the key. It needs a different type of lock, similar to the one we have on an existing gate. They did send someone once to replace the lock, but he brought the exact same lock that was already there. The gate also does not close automatically which is required by law for a gate into a pool area. The hinges need to be replaced. I have left numerous messages, several for the owner, Ryan, that have not been returned. We paid $1,390 for this gate. I definitely would not recommend Backyard Works. read more

We hired Backyard Works based upon recommendations from other homeowners in Lewes Crossing. They build a timber tech decking new landing and wider staircase. That part came out nice despite the fact that it took 3 weeks of on again/off again work and happened 2 months later than quoted. NOW we need our backyard to be re-sodded and graded. BACKYARD WORKS left a mess - piles of sod and dirt, they left large gaps at the bottom of the wood... and then he had the gall to recommend a company to finish the job they did not finish. read more

Our experience with Backyard Works was terrific. The entire team - Sean, Bobbi, Heather, Mike & Brandon made the process from start to finish the best. Our fence looks amazing! We had several estimates, however I am glad we went with Backyard Works and I suggest you do the same. I highly recommend them If possible, ask for Mike and Brandon for the fence install. We contracted in July 2020 for deck extension and pergola for new home. Expected construction to be complete BEFORE Christmas 2020. Late start due to so called unavailable materials and then lies about ability to complete with materials specified in contract. Finally finished in mid February and now refuse to return and fix small hole left in vinyl railing. Unprofessional in communication and Owner will not abide to change guaranteed by his sales manager in writing. Legal cost to recover greater than fixing it myself. Would NEVER EVER USE THEM AGAIN! If I could make it no stars I would! The owner, Ryan, is rude and disrespectful! No one ever returns calls. I'm sure he will respond rudely here as he has done in a previous review. We gave them a lot of money and we deserve respect. This hole in the railing was NOT our fault and he insisted it was our problem! What the heck??? He needs a class in customer service! read more

We searched local contractors to replace the lattice under our deck. Most said it was "too small a job". (Nothing small about it to us and we were willing to pay!). Backyard Works were the only company who agreed to do the work. We were replacing standard lattice with a vertical lattice so it did require a fair amount of framing, trimming and cutting. We signed a contract in July 2021 and were told due to COVID impacts, work backlog, materials shortage, etc., we shouldn't expect the work to be done until October, which was fine with us. I called mid-October and was told they were trying to fit us in in the next few weeks. I never actually heard back again and then the following Friday a foreman showed up at our house to take photo's and finalize measurements. The workers came the following Monday and Tuesday and completed the work. The new lattice looks fantastic. The workers was friendly, courteous and professional. In reading the negative reviews I can only assume it depends on who these folks dealt with. Except for the lack of a phone call keeping us updated on the schedule, we were very satisfied with Backyard Works and would use them again. read more

The guys at Backyard works are great. They did a wonderful job and did everything they promised, and really over delivered. My fence looks amazing, and I can't say enough about the whole process. From the time I got my estimate, to the time the job was completed it was top notch. I will consider using them for future projects as my wife and I plan to do a deck in the future. read more

Do not use this company. They do not stand by quotes, architectural drawings. Communication is terrible. 5 months of hassle only to have room measurements off by a ft+half. Concrete pad not poured properly. Will not return deposit. They promise the moon but don't live up to promises. Slick sales people. Be sure you get what you contract for! read more

What a sh*t show. We started out talking to Backyard Works in June of 2019 about a garbage enclosure and small deck on our second home. Rob was personable and responsive at first, and we were happy with our decision to work with them. Over time, though, things sure changed. We were told our garbage enclosure would be installed within a few weeks -- it was installed more than two months later. Then our deck was expected to be built at the end of summer. By that time, Rob was gone, and we were passed on to Sean. There were limited records of our conversations with Rob and no real concept of what we wanted. It was like starting over. Work finally started in October, with a lumber delivery, then the subsequent building of the deck. Overall, we are happy with the outcome (looks great from a distance, but workmanship is definitely lacking when you look up close, with ill-fitted parts, jagged edges, and a failure to even erase pencil marks. The last straw, however, was this week -- February 2020 -- a few months after the deck was finished. This being our second home, we hadn't been to the house in a few weeks. We arrived over the weekend to find a notice taped to our front door that the lumber company intended to put a lien on our house for non-payment of the lumber. This is problematic on several fronts, as 1) Backyard Works was responsible for payment of the lumber and 2) the "lien notice" served as a signal to outsiders that no one was in the house for an extended period of time. I am beyond angry about this. While the issue has now been sorted, the issues we've had are far beyond anything we've experienced with reputable companies before, and we will NEVER use or recommend Backyard Works going forward. read more
