I need to talk about my husband and Backyard Taco. This man doesn't eat Backyard Taco... he blackouts for it. We don't "order food", we trigger a ritual. The second it shows up on delivery, it's like someone rang a dinner bell for a very large, very determined farm animal with WiFi. He sees the bag and something changes. Eyes lock in. Shoulders drop. The room gets quiet. Not in a peaceful way, more like "this is about to get weird..." Then the container opens and it's game over. There is no small bite. No appreciation phase. Just immediate, aggressive commitment. It's like watching a raccoon that just discovered a full buffet and a deadline. I've seen him go from "normal human conversation" to "hunched over the table, guarding the food like it owes him money" in under five seconds. If Backyard Taco ever sponsored a documentary, I would simply submit footage of him and call it: Man vs. Taco. The taco wins. The speed is concerning. The focus is worse. I'll say something like, "Hey, did you have a good day?" and he'll respond mid-bite with a grunt that I can only assume translates to, "I have transcended this plane of existence and now live here permanently." Backyard Taco does a lot of things well. This location is very spacious and well lit inside. The tables are spaced out so there's plenty of room to move about and not hear conversations all around you. Their food is cooked/grilled/prepared fresh and is well seasoned. The employees have always been friendly and the food comes out relatively quick. I've had the tacos, burritos and quesadillas here before...but each of these taste similar. The pollo, al pastor and birria are all excellent. I haven't tried the carne asada so I cannot comment on that at this time. Cheese is an extra charge on the tacos but I think it's worth it. They have a well-stocked salsa bar that also includes peppers, radish and more. This is a great way for people to help make their order unique with some additional spice and flavor. The patio is large and plenty of seating. They have space warmers for the colder days. Unfortunately the patio faces the parking lot and commercial building to the west so there's not much to look at. One drawback for me is their chips and salsa. The chips sometimes are oily/greasy and you can get a super-chip (about 10 stuck together) that takes up half the basket. While the chips are bottomless...they aren't very good. Their standard salsa is also very bland...tastes like eating tomato paste. The medium and hot salsas from the salsa bar are better. Backyard Tacos really hits the spot when I am craving tacos. My go-to is the Al Pastor tacos. You can choose between flour or corn tortillas. They're small like street taco sized tortillas. Each taco comes with two tortillas - just one is not a strong enough structure to hold up all of the meat. Al Pastor is topped with chopped onions and cilantro. So if you don't like either of those toppings, make sure to tell them when you're ordering at the counter. There is a condiment station where you can grab a variety of different sauces. I love their Jalapeño sauce - in this recent trip the sauce was extra spicy! Sometimes my family will order a Papa Loca with Al Pastor. It means "crazy potato", and it's not at all crazy - just delicious! It's loaded with meat, butter, sour cream, and cheese. The price depends on what meat you choose. On a separate occasion, I've tried a Bueno Bowl with Al Pastor, which comes with Mexican rice and whole pinto beans. It was good, but I find myself wanting the tacos more. The restaurant is clean with plenty of tables inside and on the patio. The food comes out pretty quickly, and everything always tastes fresh. We arrived a little before 7 p.m. The drive-thru line was long, but there was no wait inside. I usually order the Al Pastor tacos, but tonight I decided to try the tostada with Al Pastor. I'm used to tostadas with just beans and cheese, but this one was loaded with meat (no beans)! The food was fresh and made to order. Next time I will try the tostada with just beans and cheese. I've only visited through the drive thru. I always receive fast and friendly service. Our orders have always been correct. I love the Papa Loca with carne asada. It's my guilty pleasure. It's a baked potato with meat of your choice, lots of melty, delicious cheese and, I think, bacon, chives and crema. It's a large portion and normally takes me two settings to finish. My only complaints are that ingredients stick to the foil it's packed in and I wish it was in a bowl instead of a cup. I've also tried the tostadas and ice cream and have no complaints. My son says the taco plate is very good and he also likes the quesadillas. While this isn't the most authentic Mexican option, it's good quality for fast food and prices are fairly reasonable. My family and I visited Backyard Taco for a late dinner on a Friday in January. It was one of the few places still open after 9 pm. This Backyard Taco is located near Agritopia and offers ample parking, but it might be challenging during peak hours. The restaurant is large and spacious. The patio is also large and equipped with heaters, which was nice during our visit. We were greeted right way. The staff behind the counter was very helpful as we asked many questions. My guys ordered burritos and chips and beans without cheese. I had already eaten dinner, so I only sampled the beans and chips. The beans were tasty, although I would have preferred them with cheese, despite our choice to exclude it. I look forward to returning to explore more of their menu offerings! read more

The food was pretty okay and the serving sizes were nice but I as super disappointed in the quesadilla. There was little no cheese. The food here was amazing. I haven't had great tacos in a while and these hit the spot. We ordered a family pack of barbacoa and al pastor tacos. The barbacoa meat was great and flavorful. The al pastor meat was on another level. It was so tender and juicy and seasoned so well. There were chunks of pineapple in the meat for a hint of sweet and sour with the meat. The meat was chopped up super small too which I like for these style of tacos. The flour tortillas were grilled on both sides and fluffy. The searing area has an indoor and outdoor section. We sat outdoors in the winter but they heat it up for you. A lot of seats so it's not too crowded. Service is self-service. They make the tacos for you but you grab your own condiments. This is one of the many places on my #yelpbucketlist that I'd been wanting to try...and finally did! I cannot get enough tacos, or Mexican food in general! I have to be careful because many places serve limes and lemons with their Mexican food and since I am allergic to citrus, I let them know upon ordering. They made sure to find out what I can and cannot have from their menu and I thought that was very respectable and thoughtful of them so that earned big kudos from me, along with the fact they have Coke Zero on their soda fountain! Was in the mood for a nice good juicy fat burrito. What I was met wit was a small dry bad burrito. I ordered a carne asada burrito. The meat had no flavor and was dry. I've also never heard of having to pay for cheese to be in a burrito.... Shouldn't it come wit cheese? I'm from Cali and any burrito has cheese so I'm just confused. Not the best experience.... I will elaborate Long line to wait to start with Very noisy as there were several 6 - 9 year olds running around unsupervised. Also the loud bullhorn speaker they announced your number order was so loud and deafening. Placed our order and asked for all beans no rice on our taco plates. We have had to go back in to fix our order every single time. I was visiting nearby and looking for a place to try something new and backyard taco came up in search results. I tried the steak burrito, the chicken burrito and ordered two cheese quesadillas (glad I ordered two but more on that in a moment). As my order was through DoorDash, I cannot speak to the interior of this establishment such as ambiance or service in person but the order was prepared and ready in under ten minutes so service does seem to be pretty fast. Food was hot when it arrived so no issues there. Now for the real reason you're here; to read about the food. I went by what others liked on the DoorDash app since this was my first time here. The steak burrito was okay, not horrible but not spectacular either. To me the taste of it was kind of strange. Not sure if this was the steak, the sauce or if there is/was cilantro in the burrito or if it's just that the ingredients didn't work together but it was not my favorite. Overall, it just didn't taste that great. It was the highest rated aside from the chicken burrito to which I have to disagree. Also where Mexican food is concerned, cabbage may work for 'some' kinds of tacos but it doesn't really work in a burro. This is the first place I've ate at that puts cabbage in their burritos. It could be that this was what was causing the strange taste perhaps? The problem with this also is this; if you were to order a few burros and save one to eat as a leftover, the cabbage would get soggy and wilted by the time you reheat it. Sorry, but to me it just doesn't work, much less belong in there. With fish tacos it works but it's not well executed being in a burrito but then that's my opinion based on having had burritos at many other places over the years. Have never seen that before so this would be a first. In my opinion between the two, the chicken burrito was better and you could taste the guacamole salsa they used. I will ask this though; Why not just use guacamole as it is? Why 'salsify' it? That just makes it more runny. It tasted good but still. Moving on, the chicken also seemed to be marinated. All the flavors worked together on this one, though if I had it again I would probably see if I could get it with rice. It was a little on the runny side but taste was good, so glad I had a tray under it since it got a little messy. It had the right balance of ingredients unlike the steak burrito where something in it was funny tasting or overpowering but I could not place what it was exactly. Others may love it, I didn't. I will say I was happy that, for once, I got to try a place that doesn't flood their burritos with refried beans for most of the filling. I hate it when places do that to cut costs. Backyard Taco does actually use a generous balance of meat on both the carne and chicken. For the price of both burritos, I felt that the pricing was fair and the size generous. You certainly won't leave hungry as they are pretty good size. The third thing I ordered was the cheese quesadilla. And as I stated in the beginning, I'm glad I got two. The taste was good but the size for the price doesn't seem right. The quesadilla was on the smaller size (shells like what you would use for a small taco). Someone in another review compared it to what you would give a child and they're right. I have been to other establishments that use larger size tortillas but as you can see from the picture I took, they are small here. Worth $4.50 a piece? Meh...I don't think so. Two of these make up for what the size of one would be anywhere else. I would actually pay a little more for one that was larger. If I could make a suggestion, maybe change the option on the menu for the size to be standard or large so the customer can choose. Cheese quesadillas are sorta hard to get wrong but as a first experience, this might be a shocker to some so just a suggestion as well as a heads up to anyone who may be eating here for the first time. Conclusion; based on what I tried, would I order from here again? I'm not sure. There are other places around that I still haven't tried yet. There are also better places and I'm not in the area very often. I probably would order from here again for the chicken burrito but I would definitely try something else for the cost in place of the steak burrito and quesadillas. They are better than some other chains around here but I wouldn't say it's anything out of this world or to write home about. First visit and unsure about eat in process. Normally do drive thru. You order and they call your number when food is ready - about 12 minutes and retrieve tray yourself. We had expected tacos like Del Taco or Taco Bell but these were small street tacos with 2 small soft shell corn tortillas and chopped pieces of meat. Ordered 2 taco plate but easily could have eaten 4 since they were so small. Rice and refried beans were flavorless- skip those and get more tacos. There was a cart of salsas and pico which were also for chips. Salsas were tasty and the flavor for tacos since there was no lettuce, cheese or tomatoes on the tacos. Not my fav service aspect with open air serve yourself items. People don't respect the space and children are there alone and don't care about stepping in front of you to get whatever they want. Same with Self serve drinks. Had to go back to order area and get a cup for water, napkins and utensils. Do guidance offered for anything when food was ordered. . Location of utensils and napkins seemed counter intuitive. Expected to find near soft drink area. Had to keep going back to the counter to ask for where things were. This place is great and has great value IF you order properly and approach each bite with creativity. Having tried most of the menu and considering Taco Tuesday, the only item worth ordering is the chicken burrito or chicken tacos. And that's not a bad thing! They use a wood fired grill and this is the closest thing to smoked chicken Mexican food. This place is clean eating compared to most fast and sit down places in the valley that are over processed or simply bar food. The chicken is smoky but many reviews are right in that it is bland. It needs more salt or seasoning but for those looking to eat healthy and want rich flavor their is a fix for that -their salsa bar. Their pico is fresh made. Their tomatoes are flavorful unlike the California variety and semi sweet. I mix up a topping of pico, Baja salsa, a dash of hot salsa and a dash of avocado salsa. This combination with the smoky chicken hits the spot. The burrito I believe has more volume of meat than ordering 3 taco Tuesday tacos and is under $10 for mostly protein - no rice and bean filler. I like that. You will be full for $10. Now what could they improve from an objective point of view? Their salsa could be better honestly for general public who don't have the creativity to make something tasty. This place emphasizes tasting the natural flavors of the vegetables or meat and they succeed in that regard. I think most of the poor reviews are from people not appreciating that and wanting something over salted and seasoned like other joints. More salt and maybe lime in their salsas could improve things. To cater to people who like even more flavor, maybe offer a cream based chipotle based sauce. The asada is dry and because it's red meat, doesn't take on the smoke as well as the chicken so is less special in that regard. The al pastor is an odd version of a light teriyaki chicken flavor... Only slightly sweet, but nothing exciting. This place gets 5 stars from me based on a chicken burrito and salsa bar selection that when dissected into their individual parts screams quality, great raw flavor and freshness. As I walked in the door that was adorned with all manner of stickers saying Backyard Taco was the best Mexican restaurant of the universe since 2015, my expectations really shot up.... only to be shot down. When my number was called in both English and Spanish (odd), I walked over expecting nearly $15 worth of food to be waiting for me. What I got....was two small tacos.... a spoonful of Mexican rice... and a spoonful of refried beans topped with Jack cheese. I could barely believe my eyes. At the salsa bar, I used the hottest (extra hot according to them) salsa and took my seat. While the Carne asada was hot and tasted pretty good, I guarandamntee you the salsa was medium at best. Gilbert people.... if you think THAT is hot....or EXTRA hot as the sticker yelled....Y'all need to toughen up. Why am I so critical?? Value for standard Mexican food is NON EXISTANT. After a couple of bad encounters we had some good, and my spouse fell in love with their family pack so that's what we've been mainly getting. Tonight we were craving them, so I drove 20 minutes out of my way after putting an online order for a family pack, 1/2 al pastor and 1/2 steak. Would covid-19 going on I went in and picked up my food instead of going through the drive-thru since there was hardly anyone inside and the drive-thru was packed. Drove all the way home to Queen Creek to find that my al pastor was chicken instead. We find the chicken to be extremely dry so we didn't want to just say oh well and eat it. Called the store to let them know, talk to the manager and she said that they could have it delivered to us if I wanted, but I could definitely sense the hesitation in her voice. I said it was okay, and I will just pick it up because our address is so new that it doesn't even show up on Google and half of our deliveries end up at someone else's doorstep. She said that she was so sorry and that they will have it ready by the time I got there. I arrived 20 minutes later to find out that they weren't even aware of me coming to pick up their mistake, so I'm trying to explain to the drive-through person about my order, and she asked me well what am I missing so they can make it for me really quick. The cashier was incredible but the female manager got on the phone and was extremely defiant and argumentative. They lost our order and our son was picking up the order and tried to blame him. The cashier admitted to losing the order but the manager but very rude and defiant. The cashier was more than happy to offer help but clearly stated he had no authority to do so.
