I will not use Backyard Depot again and recommend that you do not make the mistake of patronizing this business. We paid to have a half-cord of seasoned firewood delivered and were severely disappointed. Perhaps the folks at Backyard Depot did not realize that I spent years in and around the logging industry and am therefore qualified to judge the quality and measure the quantity of the wood delivered. Mayhap they expected to take advantage of someone who just wanted a romantic weekend fire in the fireplace. The wood delivered was fairly green- I suspect the term "seasoned" referred to a three month actual season, not that it was left to dry, as is customary in the business when calling wood "seasoned" More frustrating, however, was that when all was said and done, only about 2/3 of the wood we paid for was delivered. Uniformity of length wasn't horrible, but what was outrageous was the amount of scraps, splinters, greasy dirt, gravel, and broken glass. I hope for the sake of my neighbor's garden that the oily dirt wasn't too toxic! After the wood was loosely stacked and measured, I spent about an hour and a half digging through this detritus to salvage approximately two thirty gallon drums of splinters and kindling-like wood. I swallowed my pride and counted this towards the cubic feet required to make up a half cord. When done with that, I shoveled the dirt and garbage into a few heaping wheelbarrow loads. When the delivery man was dumping the load, and was bouncing the dump body to get out one last log, I had to tell him to stop, I didn't need all that dirt that was coming with it. Of course I hadn't seen all the garbage concealed in the rest of the load. After my experience, I read a couple other reviews of backyard depot mentioning fake 5-star reviews so I looked into them: yup, reviews from people whose only review is a 5-star for this company, and another from a guy who lives in California who got wood delivered (must have been quite a yummy delivery fee!). As for fearing that I'll be sued for my truthful review and opinion? Of course there's nothing wrong with that- and at the first hint of a lawsuit, a sample of that greasy dirt goes straight to the EPA... read more

DON'T GET RIPPED OFF - SAYS NEW MANAGEMENT, BUT SEEMS AS THOUGH NOTHING HAS CHANGED. We ordered a cord of seasoned firewood from this place. None of the firewood would light and it was unusually heavy, so before calling I bought a moisture meter to be sure of the moisture content, and after testing roughly 20 pieces of firewood they ranged from 25% - 35% moisture, which means it was not seasoned firewood, even though it was passed off as seasoned firewood. When I called and spoke to Chris, who is listed here as the new owner and made a reasonable offer for him to either come pick up the wood or just charge us for greenwood (which we'd have to wait until next season to use) the guy basically called me a liar and said if I wrote any online reviews exposing him he'd sue me for defamation and I'd have massive legal bills. Based on this go-to response it seems he's had this conversation many times as he wasn't concerned at all with making things right, but immediately accused me of being dishonest and threatened to sue. I wonder how many people have not written reviews because of bogus legal threats? Now we're stuck with firewood we can't use and have to pay for another cord from someplace else. read more

Placed an order for loam and arranged for a Saturday delivery on short notice. Rainy weather delayed delivery. I mentioned that I was having sod delivered on Monday so I needed the loam before then. Chris said he would try to fit in a delivery on Sunday, even though they were fully booked for other work that day. He later called and made arrangements for a delivery later on Saturday rather than risk running into problems with a Sunday delivery. My 5 star review is owing to the amazing work of one employee, who not only delivered a truckload of loam on short notice but, on realizing that it was impossible to dump into the narrow space needed, he spent 1/2 hour shoveling it into the space for me. The job would have taken me 3 times as long, at least. It was an incredibly hot day and he didn't complain for a minute. Rather, he was pleasant and cordial throughout. When I offered to tip him, he refused to accept. This business quoted us $295 for a cord of "super-seasoned" hardwood. When it was delivered, we were charged $334. When I called to question the difference, the guy apologized, said he thought he had told me about the delivery charge the day before (he had not). He promised to get back to me about our delivery refund, never called back, ignored an email we sent, and then, when my fiancee called to follow-up with him 3 weeks later, he was verbally abusive to her, basically had a temper tantrum, and hung up the phone when she asked him to give her his name. Also, the wood is not super-seasoned. Most of it is green. I am filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, who I see (by their website) has already given his business an F rating (for five unanswered BBB complaints). Later, the guy called me after our incident pretending to be "the manager". Same guy. Same voice. Same accent. Same sliminess. I told him "are you kidding? You're the same guy -- I recognize your voice!!". He hung up. Later, another guy (ACTUALLY different guy this time) called and tried to bribe me with sports bar furniture/equipment if I would let my grievance go. Amazing. Similar to the other review: we paid extra for "super-seasoned" firewood, and when we got it, it was so green the sap was literally dripping off it. I called because I assumed (naively) that there had been a mistake. The owner told me I was "lying" and said, "If there was a problem with the wood, why didn't your husband call me?" Excuse me??!! When I called to cancelled, he had to cut me short over the phone and made excuses that he had a lot of customers. I asked for my return the same day and he said he already did it. I waited for a week and called again and he said he has the recoded that it was refund. So I contacted my company to file a claim. My credit card returned me back my money. Not the company. He was talking bad about his coworkers as well when I told him to check out the firewood and I wanted to order some. I guess I've been lucky in my dealings with Backyard Depot. I purchased a cord of dry firewood late last fall, and it was delivered the next day, despite the early snow making our driveway slippery -- the driver was polite and persistent, maneuvering the truck to dump the load where I'd asked. The driver did express concern about what his boss would say/do because he was taking too long. I've also purchased a few small "box" loads, again receiving dry hardwood that burned quite well (though a bit overpriced). Run! Seriously, think twice before shopping here. You might seriously regret it. We bought a wood stove, with a flue liner kit and installation. I don't if the owner is always like he was with us these last six weeks, but what should have been easy turned very melodramatic and stressful. I thought we would end up in small claims court. There were many dates set up to do the install, and then no call and no one showed. A phone call would have gone a long way. To get blown off repeatedly makes you feel something bad is going on. The excuses are many with him. I understand that people have rough patches, but at the least you still have to communicate and not just blow people off over and over. He ultimately got his buddy to come install the stove, and only because my boyfriend is a general contractor who was around to be present and make sure it was done to our satisfaction was I able to trust them. Previously, the owner had sent a guy who ruined the liner but would have likely left it there and not said anything. That one had to be removed. We are finally done with the drama, and are now happy with the end result, but the stress was so high, and the owner of the company said some unforgivable things over the week which will stay with us. If you do buy from this business, outline everything clearly, as he is a salesman to the core. In the end, as things grew tense and bitter, I found myself frustrated that he wrote our receipt in a flat amount instead of breaking it down. I wanted to know how he was breaking it down and he would not do it for us when we repeatedly asked. I ultimately filed complaints with the BBB and my credit card disputed the charges, and suddenly it was resolved. It should not have come to that. Do yourself a MASSIVE favor and pay heed to all of the one star reviews on this place. You'll notice there's a pattern. It's been a couple years since my experience but it still drives me insane that this man is still operating, ripping people off, and most worryingly- threatening them. Like so many others, I too ordered firewood from him. He assured me it was seasoned, which it is not. He also assured me it would be delivered, which it was not. We set a delivery date for the day after I placed the order because a storm was on the way and I wanted to ensure that I had the wood before it got here. I asked if there was a delivery charge, and he told me there was not because I live so close to the location. I also made sure that he had both my landline and mobile numbers so that he could contact me if there were any issues with the delivery. The next day, I stayed home the entire day because he could not provide me with a delivery time frame. No one ever showed. I called multiple times and received no answer. Needless to say, I was very upset and continued calling until I finally reached someone the day after the scheduled delivery date. The man I spoke with over the phone had the SAME VOICE but claimed to be a different person. He first told me that the delivery person had come but I wasn't home. When I stated that I had in fact been home and that they also had both my contact numbers, he said that there had been an unexpected funeral they'd had to attend and had been unavailable the whole day. ????????????????? Having read reviews about the place at this point and realized that this is their M.O., I stated that I wanted a full refund. First he said it wasn't an issue because they hadn't processed the payment. Then it turned out they had in fact charged my card, FOR MORE THAN THE AGREED UPON AMOUNT. When I questioned the discrepancy, he said there was a delivery fee- completely contradictory to what I'd been told when placing the order. After a number of phone calls, I sent him the following email: "Per our several previous phone conversations, I was charged $286 for a delivery of firewood which was never delivered. Not only was this transaction processed without my approval, as I was told by you over the phone that my card had not yet been run, but this amount was not the agreed upon price. I have alerted my bank that this transaction was not approved and will be filing a charge dispute form. Also as per our conversation, you stated that you had refunded my card the amount in full as of 11:10am on January 22, 2015. I will expect to see this reflected on my account by tomorrow, January 23rd, or I will be taking further action." This email came back as undeliverable. I sent it again as certified mail and received a phone call, threatening to release my credit card info on the internet if I posted any reviews on social media. As I have since replaced that credit card, this is no longer a threat. I ordered seasoned firewood for our fire-pit from Backyard Depot in late May. I had it stored in my garage to keep it dry and had several fires with it that didn't go as expected as the wood was damp. Based on reviews here, I was hesitant to even call and wasn't expecting much help. Come to find out that Chris bought Backyard Depot last year from the previous owner (who received the bad reviews) and couldn't be more helpful. He offered me a partial refund and additional wood that he would show me is well under 20% moisture rating. When I went with my SUV to see Chris and get the new wood and partial refund, he was very pleasant and courteous. He was about to help me fill up the back of my SUV with the new wood and then offered to deliver it for free instead so I didn't have to mess up the back of the SUV. Within an hour the new wood was at my house, nearly matching the size of my original purchase. We tried the wood last night and it burns great! I work in sales and know there will always be issues and what's most important is how people respond to those issues. Based on Chris' response, he has a customer for life. I couldn't be happier with the way I was treated and if you had a bad experience with Backyard prior to Chris becoming the owner, would recommend you give him a try. read more

I honestly do not know what Laine C's problem is with doing the correct thing. I went in for what I thought would be a pleasant experience in helping out a local small business owner. My friends bought a pellet stove from him a year ago and I figured everything went well....little did I know. Firstly, I paid for my pellet stove in Mid-September - I agreed to have it installed in two weeks - because he said he would be tied up with the Topsfield fair. I figured that after the fair I would be receiving a phone call from Laine C. of Backyard Depot (and many other fraudulent businesses) as soon as the Topsfield fair was over. Four days after the fair was over I had to call Laine C. and remind him of my purchase, "oh yeah, yeah - you're number one on the list, we'll be there tomorrow -Friday" Tomorrow came, but my pellet stove did not. This was now Mid-October and we happened to get a freak snow storm - this was convenient for him. Monday came and I asked when i would have my pellet stove installed, "Oh today I'm doing yesterday's customers because of the snow storm, so you'll be tomorrow" I thought I was the day before yesterday's customer - huh? It went on like this for a month and a half and then one miraculous day my pellet stove came - or so I thought. My wife called me to inform me that the installers told her that what we were receiving was a floor model - wait, what? Now I have no problems buying floor models - but not at new prices and not when I expect and paid for a new unit. My wife sent it back to the store. I promptly took time out of my work schedule and told Laine C. of Backyard depot (and many other fraudulent businesses) that enough was enough and I wanted my money back - I'm a calm guy and I spoke calmly as did he - but the camels back had been broken one too many times. He said he could not refund my money today because he had just switched banks, that it would wipe him out - he said I would have my money next Thursday. I went home and promptly received a call from Laine C. asking me to reconsider and allow him to "make it right" and the he "didn't want to lose a customer." He promised he "make it right" by giving me this and that and throwing in extra pellets - I told him I simply want what I paid for and I felt bad and told him to bring a new stove. Finally after two months (60+ days) I got a new pellet stove. As nice as his installers were, they did not put the exhaust system together correctly. I had smoke and exhaust in my home for the first week, So I had to take the exhaust system apart myself and install it correctly. As long as it is, the story is not yet yet over - My stove came without the one ton of pellets promised in my invoice. His men came with 2 bags of pellets. So my saga with Laine C. of Backyard Depot (and various other fraudulent businesses) continued for another two months (60+ days) of calling to get my pellets delivered, that never happened, instead I had to call and call and call and go and go and go to his business to pick up my pellets piece-meal. Ten bags here, 20 bags there and then the last 20 bags picked up on my gas and time. I am glad I never have to deal with Laine C. of Backyard Depot (and various other fraudulent businesses) ever again. My friends that bought their stove from Laine originally are still chasing (no pun intended) him for two tons of pellets he owes them from over a year ago. Let me be your friend and advise you to stay clear of Laine C., Back Yard depot and any of his other businesses - whether it's snow baords/skis, Gazebos, hot tubs, pool tables, grills, playgrounds, firewood, mulch, stone etc. If you go into any shop that sells these types of items, find out if Laine C. has anything to do with them - if he does, do yourself a favor and simply walk out and save yourself months/years of headache. There are plenty of honest small business people that will treat you like a customer - aka the person who pays the bills. read more

Running low on seasoned wood, I stopped here to check prices. I had had a bad experience there before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out it is under new management, and the change couldn't be more stark. When I asked about how seasoned it was, He said 18 months and showed me with a moisture reader how dry it was. When I asked about delivery, he said he could have it as early as today. When he dropped it, he made a point of getting in a good spot for stacking. He was quick, courteous and professional. I went in today looking for concrete tree rings to build a budget friendly fire pit I found on Pinterest. Since I am in the process of upgrading my entire yard I don't want to spend too much right now on something I'm going to tear down next summer and totally rebuild so I thought this $50 project would be a perfect temp solution. When the guy that came out to answer my questions heard "cheap" he got really snotty and refused to answer my questions about other things or give me prices on the more then one of the sample fire rings he had on display. If I could give negative stars I would. Lane sold us a broken gas stove, with missing parts, and neither him nor his installers were skilled or knowledgeable. It took months to get the stove installed with many no-shows, delays, and excuses (they never actually finished). Then we had to order parts ourselves from a knowledgeable and friendly parts dealer in Rhode Island. We tried to get other companies to finish the work but none would take this on and went on to tell us that they receive complaints frequently about Backyard Depot and other businesses run/owned by Lane. Parts dealers in the area reported that they would not sell to Lane because of his poor business practices. When discussing these reports and concerns with Lane, he made inappropriate and offensive comments about other dealers' sexual preferences, etc. When questioned about no shows and delays, he insulted and blamed his own installers when he had not informed them of the dates/times. He also blamed us. We hated going to the Depot and talking to Lane over the phone or in person. It always felt like we were being strung along, misled, insulted, and we were always disappointed. In the end, my husband had to finish the installation himself and then re-do the parts done by Lane's guys. I would recommend not doing any business with The Backyard Depot or any other business this guy runs (and he'll tell you there are many.) It took us almost 4 months to get our stove installed and again, we had to finish it ourselves. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I bought a cord of firewood from backyard depot recently. I had the manager load my utility trailer. This was my first time loading firewood in my trailer so I was not sure how much to load. I thought I could split it and take a half cord per load. After I stacked the wood I realized that it was closer to 2/3 of a cord. I called and basically got accused of lying and trying to cheat the business for more wood. All unwanted was what I paid for. After a tense conversation and an offer to come pick up the wood for a refund, the manager reluctantly gave me another trailer full of firewood. Which when stacked still did not equal a full cord. Not to mention the 1/4 of a trailer of splitters and bark pieces that was leftover. Needless to say I will not go back for firewood next year. Although slightly more expensive, Northeast Nursery in Peabody is worth the extra drive. Hand picked wood loaded into 1/4 cord bins for a consistent load. Love the furniture provided by Backyard Depot. I had purchased 5 pieces from them. However, my last experience will ensure that I will NEVER purchase anything from them again. On Aug 10 I purchased a 76" bench which was to be delivered by Aug 15. Each weekly phone call, I was told that the item was not in stock, as originally thought, and was to be delivered that day. Finally, on Sep 5 I went to the store where I was given a refund on my credit card. It is now Sep 20, and that refund has not appeared. I just have to reiterate what others have said about Backyard Depot of the owner. I purchased stone for a wall which was basically a kit - different sized stones, and accompanying top stones. When we got the delivery, we got about 2/3rd the stones we paid for, and he said not to worry, he'd have the rest of the stones for us in a few days. Over a month later, after a series of calls that escalated in unprofessionalism, to the point where he was blaming me for being so petty as to ask for the rest of my stones, which we'd already paid for completely, i finally said we wanted our money back for the stones he didn't deliver. He said fine, went went, he cut a check, we left, ordered the remaining stones from a stone and brick place in Beverly (can't remember the name right now) and had it the next day. Backyard depot damaged our fence during a delivery in April. We called the day of the accident and the store manager stated that he would call his insurance to take care of it. Several weeks later we followed up with his insurance directly to find he had not reported the damage at all. The owner has been super shady about everything and we are still trying to get them to cover the cost of the damage and it is now Sept. We are filling with Better Business and the Attorney General's Office on Monday. read more

I bought four items here. Two of the chairs broke within a month. Called the owner three different times and he stated that he would make this right by getting replacements from his other location. I called two times to confirm pick-up and he had a different excuse every time. When I went to pick up the chairs he didn't have the chairs after he said he would. I asked for a refund as he had the old chairs for over a week. He issued me what he said was a refund and when I checked my credit card statement, low and behold no credit was even issued. This guy is the biggest crook in the business. He has a mountain of wood piled up outside and it is supposed to "seasoned". It is not, it is wet just cut wood and will NOT BURN. So I ordered 1/2 a cord of his KILN dried wood which he told me was from their "warehouse where they kiln dry their wood". LIE #1 - The delivery took a week - They delivered wood from their big pile of WET Wood - NOT KILN DRIED THAT I PAID EXTRA FOR. I was not home when he delivered it or else I would have rejected it before they even dumped it on my driveway. - When I returned from my trip and looked at the wood, it was obvious that it was NOT KILN DRIED. I called him immediately and complained and he said that it was definitely KILN DRIED. LIE #2 - Then he said he had even used some in his own fireplace the night before. LIE #3 - I demanded that he pickup the wood and refund my money. He said he would send someone over right away to "look at the wood" to make sure it was not a mistake. LIE #4 - It took a week. for someone to show up and when they did they had a truck full of MORE WET WOOD and said they would dump it and not bother taking back the other pile. Before they dumped it, I checked several pieces of this "NEW KILN DRIED wood and it was the same as the first pile. You can easily tell if wood is wet because it is VERY heavy, feels wet and the bark is firmly attached to the wood. If you take two pieces and bang them together, wet wood will make a thumping sound. Real KILN DRIED WOOD will make a hollow knocking sound, will have the bark loose and the ends of the wood will be somewhat cracked showing the drying out of the wood. I told the driver (the owners son) that it was not kiln dried, I did not want it and to take the first pile back and refund my money. The driver said he would call the owner to find out what to do and got back in the truck. After about 2 minutes he started the truck and drove away without even telling me what was to be done. LIE #5 - I immediately called the owner and he started a shouting match and told me that he had already credited my credit card the full amount and I should just keep the wood. LIE #6 - He never credited my card and when I called back again he just yelled and hung up on me. - I tried to light a fire the same day just to see what would happen and as expected the wood would not light. I could actually see the water foaming out of the ends of the wood as it heated up from all the paper I tried using to get it started.
