The Backyard Brewery & Kitchen is now open, which took over The Yard Restaurant on Tuesday night. The back portion of the former Yard Restaurant was redone, which features a bar area and dining room with wooden floors and an enclosed brewery with tanks behind glass windows (similar to the New England Taphouse), love the glowing blue lights! There is also an outside patio in the back. The front entrance of the building (The Yard) is now closed. The Backyard Brewery entrance is now in the back of the building (patio area) north facing the big parking lot.
The menu is new which offers pub fare including appetizers, salads, chowder, sandwiches, burgers, flatbreads, and entrees such as meatloaf, fish & chips, salmon, prime rib, baby back ribs, steak, mac & cheese, stir fry, and beer chicken. The prices are moderate, appetizers ($7-$12), sandwiches with chips, fries or slaw ($11-$15), and most entrees $14-$24.
The full bar offers a list of cocktails, wine, and house brewed beers (they have 6 to choose from now, with more offered soon).
My buddy and I stopped here for dinner and decided to sit outside on the patio, since the bar area inside was very packed and the dining room was noisy. For beers, we decided to get the Flight of 4x 4oz Samples ($7) choosing the Lazy Daze IPA, MONKee Bars, Backhoe Blonde, & Smokin'. The beers were pretty good and we ordered a second round of the same.
For a starter, the Pulled Mussels ($12) consisted of a bowl of PEI Mussels cooked with braised pork, pale ale, green coconut herb sauce/pineapple salsa. These mussels were interesting to eat, but those mussels could've been served with bread or toast points to soak up the broth.
For salads, we ordered the Pear Naked ($9) and The Drunk Cobbler ($10). The Pear Naked was very good, which had a mix of spinach, walnuts, bleu cheese, pears, and a sweet vinaigrette dressing. The Drunk Cobbler had a mix of greens, bleu cheese, eggs, bacon, tomato, shredded cheddar, but the bleu cheese dressing was missing. I had to ask the server for dressing.
For dinners, were ordered the 10 oz Slow Roasted Prime Rib ($24) au jus served with mashed potatoes and the Any Fin Goes ($14) - fried haddock sandwich with fries. The Prime Rib was served rare as requested and actually very good. The mashed potatoes were dense. The Haddock Sandwich was very good too, which the fresh haddock was deep fried in house pale ale batter over spicy pickle slaw on a toasted bulkie bun, served with fresh cut fries (not greasy).
The food we had was enjoyable on this first night of business for the Backyard Brewery. The service here is on a learning curve (not figured into the rating). There were some hiccups with the service here on the first night (ie extra plates, condiments were not initially served with the food items and delayed after we requested those things). The food and drink took a while to come out since the place was very busy inside (not busy on the patio-muggy night).
Overall, the Backyard Brewery is a fresh start/new beginning with a solid good food menu, compared to the outdated Yard Restaurant, which most of the food I've had there was just pretty average. We hope return here soon once the initial learning curve phase takes its course, to try out other menu items such as the Maple Salmon and the Brewer's Drunken Mac N Cheese! read more
