this was my first time here! it's very spacious in here and there is outdoor seating with shade and sun options. we ordered the island bowl to share. the regular size was perfect and worth the price to split with another person. the bowl was a great combination of crunchy, smooth, and sweet. i normally don't like any added sugar, but to get the full experience i did not ask them to remove the pineapple juice. it was not overwhelming sweet like most açaí bowls i've tried (: totally recommend trying this out! read more

Supposedly healthy veg in a bowl place. The yoga pants crowd that hangs out here negates the health aspect by loading up on sugars through fruit and makes their meal disgustingly sweet with agave syrup, which is sugar. Might as well plow through a bowl of Cap'n Crunch and get the same sugar load. They also have smoothies, which I opted for instead of the bowel bowls. I had the ginger smoothie which was supposed to contain uh, ginger, plus banana and cashew milk. I asked if there was much ginger in the smoothie and the answer was no. I was asked if I wanted extra and I said hell yes, you can't have too much ginger. Ginger isn't sweet, not full of sugars and is actually truly healthy for you. When I received my smoothie, it was basically puréed banana. No hint of ginger. Why puréed banana you ask? To make it sickeningly sweet for the phony yoga pant crowd. Gross and totally bland, like the posers that eat this junk. The best part was the signage on the front window. First there is the claim to offering healthy food, next the sign for the next trendy juice of a magic berry, last the State of California warning that cancer causing materials are used at the establishment. As far as I'm concerned, it's just healthy. Very healthy. My go-to order at Backyard Bowls over the last few years has been their Berry Bowl, topped with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, goji berries, granola, and honey. Fruit here is always fresh and plentiful. The goji berries are probably one of the most expensive items on your breakfast/snack, so eat up! Their bowls are made with apple juice, coconut milk, or hemp milk here, which is a delight as someone who is lactose intolerant and often forgets her lactase pills. Not once has one of my orders been messed up here. I can make it through a small bowl without stopping, but the large is definitely something to share with a friend or date. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can get the Behemoth Bowl, which the management says "serves 2-4 normal humans, or 1 beast." It's all a little expensive, though, coming in at $8-9 for a small and $10-11 for a large. Anyone lacking nutrients, though, might find this to be an appropriate price to pay. The decor is homey and comforting. On the walls are a series of canvases by a local artist, which you can purchase if you so choose. They use wooden building blocks and spheres as order numbers. And in keeping with Santa Barbara tradition, there is plentiful outdoor seating for a view of...Calle Real? Backyard Bowls is a delight to go to -- I only wish there was one in Isla Vista, so I could stop craving the soupy 'smoothie' bowls that other coffee and juice shops in the area offer. read more

I give this location a one star for one reason only : timing. I got to this location around 11 or so, and I had wanted to see if this location would be a bit better in taste and flavor. Other locations haven't been as good taste wise, and their biggest factor is time. I've been to three locations in slow times, and they still tend to pull 10-15 mins. I ordered the island bowl (with pure açaí because I'm caffeine sensitive so no guaraná) I'll give them a discount because there were three people before me, but it shouldn't take almost 20 mins to make an açaí bowl. Pros is the açaí bowl was the best one I've had in a long time. Unfortunately, I thought about canceling my order because it was taking a while. read more

Absolutely love this place and love that it's SB's secret. Part of me wants this company to go national, but I also don't want the quality to suffer. I crave Acai all the time because of this place! I either prefer the Acai smoothie or the Berry bowl, which had the Acai smoothie as the base with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and granola on top. Definitely have to add the honey as well! I don't get the goji berries because I'm not a fan. You are free to substitute it with something else. They make the smoothie right EVERY TIME that I order it. I have even tried to find another place that has an Acai smoothie as good as this place, but I've had no luck. It's just annoying the place closes at 5pm. I would love an Acai smoothie as a dessert! I like the Island Bowl personally because pineapple and coconut are bomb. They top your acai bowl with strawberries, blueberries, banana, granola, honey and shreds of coconut. I don't normally like coconut shreds but it compliments the bowl with texture. I highly recommend getting this and sitting on the tables outside on a nice sunny day. Your run-of-the-mill, "healthy" blender bar. Think Blenders or Jamba, but instead of focusing on smoothies, their claim to fame is: surprise surprise, the bowls. I shared a Berry Bowl with a friend. The good: really fresh ingredients. The strawberries were juicy and ripe without being mushy, as are the bananas. I liked how goji berries are added as a topping. It gives each bite a delicate, distinct sweetness without overpowering everything. The acai blend was pretty thick and substantial, not a watery mess that some other places have. The bowl was made within 5 minutes, which is great for impatient people :P The bad: considering how we went in when it wasn't busy at all, the tables were quite dirty. The Berry Bowl we got had very, very little honey... maybe a little less than a teaspoon. When I asked for more, I was told that it's usually a 50 cent charge and another delicate drizzle of honey was added. Considering how these bowls aren't cheap, I would expect that workers can be a bit more generous with something as trivial as honey. Backyard Bowls makes good tasting acai bowls, great for those who have a sweet craving but are conscious about their health. With that said, be ready to drop a good chunk of cash for what you get, and watch where you rest your elbows! read more

I do not understand this place. I wanted a healthy breakfast, I ordered the yogurt bowl and expected just fruit and a little honey. What I got was slimy strawberries coated in what they called honey and 4 blueberries and the grossest granola I've ever tasted. The berry bowl is very good and refreshing, perfect for a hot summer day. They LOAD IT UP with them fruits!! The island bowl is a tad bit sweeter than the berry due to the difference in the base liquid that they use. I stay full for hours after eating one of the bowls here. After the outrageous halloween night in isla vista, the boyfriend and I headed to backyard bowls to regain some nutrition. The place is in a cute little plaza, not that hard to miss but its a great place to stop by for a snack or quick breakfast. We got the island bowl to go because I didnt think I would finish it, but the boyfriend who claimed he only wanted a bite ended up eating half (does this happen to anyone else?!) thus we ended up scraping the bowl clean at the end of 5 minutes. Loved the coconut on top and the acai smoothie on the bottom was so refreshing and all of it carried me over till lunch. It was great. I wouldn't imagine it makes great leftovers and as others have said it is a bit pricey for one, but I thought it was the perfect portion to share making it at least a little more affordable. The employee put them horizontally in the bag carefully. Then she proceeded to turn the entire bag vertically so she could staple it shut!! I tipped the bag back horizontally and texted my client what happened. I am not allowed to open the bags or I could have confirmed the state of the order.
