I was excited to visit and had a $10 gift card from completing my Backyard Habitat certification. The store itself is very nice and has a lot of interesting items to browse. However, I was a little disappointed by the atmosphere. There was only one other customer in the store, and no one seemed particularly welcoming or engaged as I looked around. It felt a bit awkward, which surprised me because I expected a specialty shop like this to feel warm and inviting. You'll find products and information for all of your backyard wildlife: squirrels, bees, bats, and even backyard gardening. Beautiful wind chimes, mailbox wraps, garden flags, rain gauges, thermometers, jewelry and garden art too. The staff are all bird experts and passionate about all things birds. If you can't find what you need here, it probably doesn't exist. Fantastic Portland chain with several stores throughout the area. When I first moved to Portland, I discovered Backyard Bird Shop from a friend. I was fascinated that a store existed that was dedicated to all things for bird watchers but quickly realized it's so much more than that. Yes, they have bird feeds of every type and size, the kind designed to keep away those pesky but let's face it, brilliant squirrels. They come in a variety of colors and styles. For my previous home, I bought three of different sizes with copper roofs that turned a beautiful patina over time. They lasted the 17 years I lived in my house and stayed behind when I moved so the new owners could continue to feed and watch the birds. And yes, if you want to feed the squirrels they have feeders designed for them, too! And seeds and suet for all. They also have an array of hummingbird feeders which everyone should have. Hummingbirds are absolutely magical and it's so much fun to watch them. Put one outside your window and in no time, they will find it! My hummingbird feeder came with me and even on my balcony, those little magical birds have found it. This store is way more than just bird feeders, they have books on the PNW; wind-chimes in every size, style and sound; rain chains, which add such interest to a home; whimsical yard art, a must for every patio or yard; bird baths and water features. One of my favorite shops which happens to be a franchise yet really does support local artists and businesses. We are always in awe as to how the shop seems like a completely different place each time you visit with new things to drool all over yet I know where to find my hummingbird supplies, bird food and suet. There is something for everyone there truly...just wow on earrings, candles, soaps....even artwork. We even found some art from a gentleman in Gresham who we also say at a coast gallery. Just wow... Pretty shop, great selection of prices and food, prices a little higher than non-specialty shops, decent seasonal sales. I've come maybe 10 times over the years and in every instance have found some of the staff to carry a put-upon attitude when you ask questions, or ask for the advertised and phone checked sale price . They must not need the business. I always wondered is that their family business or what. This past time the "I don't dive a darn, tough luck" attitude on a price discrepancy was so prevalent by the young fellow who said he is manager it prompted me to seek a different location next time. We shall see if it is this particular location issue, the business, or if it is simply they have a sort of monopoly on bird supplies in the area. To me it looks like unhappy workers and perhaps management or ownership. Disappointing. Visiting there is a pleasant look, there is an undertone of grrrrrrrrrrr. Amazon, Comcast all the other big outfits have them beat by a mile on employee helpfulness and demeanor. It must've been fate. I was driving back to downtown Portland after a day of shooting in Hillsboro and turned the wrong way for the on-ramp of the 84. So to get back to where I needed to be I had to take a short-cut through this shopping plaza. Low and behold, like a beacon shining in the night, there was Backyard Bird Shop. Dozens of wind chimes hanging in the floor-to-ceiling windows. Fate, I do love you sometimes. Now you are asking why I am so happy to find a wind chime selection? My mother has asked for one for Christmas and what mother wants ---- mother gets. But I have been hard pressed to find something other than the lame-o leftovers at Target so this was a blessing -- choices upon choices! I wandered through the store which also has a great selection of seed for your various birds and backyard animals, bird feeders,(including hummingbird) as well as a few other gift-y items. I found a great Tibetan bell chime at a very reasonable price as well as a little travel gift for the sis. The sales ladies were attentive without hounding me and the store was well stocked with good variety -- I had to hold myself back from buying a few different items since I like to pretend I am Snow White and feed all the birds on my back porch. It's difficult to buy birthday gifts for GF. I was looking around for those rain gutter chains and saw a cool set hanging in the window of Backyard Bird Shop. GF has also been wanting a quality birdbath--something unique. When I went inside to check out the rain gutter chain, I saw a number of cool birdbaths scattered around the store. I went back and forth trying to decide. I finally got the birdbath. She hated it. JOKE. She was very happy with her gift. She just started re-designing our garden and the birdbath will look great once the plants are in. The store has a great selection of cool bird houses, bat houses and wind chimes. The Backyard Bird Shop was the perfect place to shop for a Mother's Day gift for my mom. She loves birds, which meant that this was the right place to be in! To be completely honest though, I was initially drawn to the shop by the Chinook Book coupon ($5 off a $20 purchase). I browsed around for about 10 minutes. I was once asked if I was finding everything alright and was then left along to look at things, which is how I like it. There were so many gifts that would be great for bird-lovers here! I loved that they feature handcrafted art from local artists. And usable art too! Bird-baths, hummingbird feeders, hand-crafted coasters, etc. I was very happy to see they carry one of my favorite lines of kitchen utensils - Talisman Designs. I decided it was time to replace my plastic measuring spoons with handcrafted, wooden ones with bee designs on them. I also picked up a Hum-button for my mom that lets you feed hummingbirds from your hand! And...I spotted some beautiful hummingbird coasters I'd like to come back and buy for her at some point. Like it has been mentioned in a prior comment, the service can be hit or miss~ However, the last time we were there, a young lady (a new employee) welcomed us and spoke with us for a few minutes and answered my questions about our bird seed sample I brought in to have 'analyzed'. Normally, when we are on a 'mission', we don't have a (mailed) coupon and inevitably we will receive one in the mail within the next day or two...the clerks do not ever tell us one has been mailed out and offer the discount, which is kind of discouraging, but we love the variety of quality goods they carry and so we keep going back (I think I just love to ring the huge chimes! ;)!! ) read more

And you know, you really do deserve the best -- especially when it is this reasonably priced! Place is nice and has good stuff. I really don't like the lady that is always working there and it's costing them a star. She is always rude. I've tried to be super nice and nope rude as hell. Can not stand her. I have been going there for 4 years, she recognizes me because I just walk in and she'll say oh stuff you want isn't out yet I'll get someone to grab it. For Christmas from her she sold me an expensive bird house for my mom. She rang me up. Mom open it and it's broken, we go in together and she gives me crap about how she knows I got it here. Like I bought it 6 days ago you rang me up and wrapped it. Then pulled out receipt still gave crap we broke it they don't sell bad stuff. After much arguing they don't have another bird house like that to exchange so she goes just this one time I'll give you store credit. WTF?!?! I will drive further to another one I dislike her so much. I usually buy huge bags of seeds and jugs of mixed stuff for the birds. I've bought multiple humming bird feeders and accessories there. I purchased humming bird feeder a few months ago and each week the sugar water would get moldy - so replaced it a couple if times and no humming birds would come to feed. Went the local hardware store and replaced it and have already had lots of birds return to feed in less than 24 hours. Took back the feeder for a refund with the original box - but receipt was long gone and they wouldn't refund my money - only store credit ! Not happy with customer service read more

For years I've picked up supplies for birds in my garden at the Audubon Society's shop but this time I stopped in here. So much better! I will pay yearly dues to Audubon (a good organization dedicated to birds) but for heaven's sake, this shop has the same (or better) knowledgable staff plus a vast array of feeders, brackets, poles, baths, books, cards, posters ... everything. In addition they are very helpful AND not seemingly busy on phone calls or in rapt discussions with browsers while you, an actual paying customer, wait for 20 minutes. Super customer service.
